ENGLISH

An earthquake is a sudden shaking when rocks break underground; its centre below ground is the focus, the point above it the epicentre. A volcano erupts when molten rock, ash and gas escape through the crust. Pakistan lies near active plate boundaries, so quakes are a real risk.

The focus and epicentre confuse many students, so fix them with a picture. The focus is deep underground, where the rock actually breaks — it is the true centre of the earthquake. The epicentre is the point on the surface directly above the focus, like the point on the ceiling directly above a lamp on the floor. Damage is usually worst near the epicentre, which is why news reports name the epicentre town. A volcano is a different kind of breaking-out: molten rock, ash and gas push up through a crack in the crust. Pakistan sits near the meeting place of moving plates, so the ground here is restless and earthquakes are a real, regular risk, not a rare story.

2. Floods and Droughts

ENGLISH

Floods happen when rivers overflow after heavy rain or snowmelt — Pakistan's 2010 and 2022 floods show their scale. Drought is the opposite: long lack of rain dries crops, wells and pastures. Both are worsened by deforestation and poor drainage.

Floods and droughts are opposites, but both ruin the same things: crops, homes and drinking water. A flood happens when a river gets more water than its channel can hold — after very heavy rain, or when spring snow melts fast in the mountains. Pakistan's floods of 2010 and 2022 showed how whole districts can go under water in days. A drought is the slow version: month after month with too little rain, until crops fail, wells run low and animals go thirsty. Both get worse when forests are cut, because bare slopes shed water fast instead of soaking it up, and when drains are blocked with rubbish.

Floods & droughtsToo much water→Too little waterFloods & droughts

ENGLISH

Cyclones are spinning storms over warm seas, bringing destructive wind, rain and storm surge to coasts — Sindh's coast is exposed. Landslides follow heavy rain on steep, bare slopes; heatwaves and cold waves harm health, crops and livestock.

A cyclone is born over warm sea water, where hot, moist air rises and starts to spin — the warmer the sea, the stronger the storm can grow. When it hits land it brings three dangers at once: winds strong enough to tear roofs, rain heavy enough to flood, and a storm surge, a wall of sea water pushed ashore that can drown low coastal land. Sindh's coast faces this risk. Landslides are a hillside danger: after heavy rain, a steep slope with no tree roots to hold it can slide down in minutes, burying roads and houses. Heatwaves and cold waves are quieter hazards, but they still kill — old people, small children, crops and animals suffer first.

4. Preparedness and Safety

ENGLISH

Disasters cannot always be prevented, but losses can be cut: build safely, keep drains clear, plant trees on slopes, heed warnings, and know evacuation routes. During a quake: drop, cover, hold. During a flood: move to high ground, never drive through floodwater.

Preparedness is mostly boring work done before anything happens — and that is exactly why it saves lives. Before: build houses safely, keep drains clear so rainwater has somewhere to go, plant trees on slopes to hold the soil, and make sure everyone in the family knows the evacuation route and the safe high ground. During an earthquake, remember three words: drop, cover, hold — drop to the ground, cover your head under something strong, and hold on until the shaking stops; never run for a lift or stand under a fan. During a flood, move early to high ground and never, ever drive or walk through floodwater — even shallow-looking water can knock you down or hide a broken road.

Be preparedDrop, cover, hold→High ground→Heed warningsBe prepared

4.1 An earthquake's point above the focus is the

Answer: Epicentre.

4.2 Floods in Pakistan in 2022 were caused mainly by

Answer: Very heavy rain.

4.3 Cyclones form over

Answer: Warm seas.

4.4 During an earthquake you should

Answer: Drop, cover, hold.

4.5 Drought means

Answer: Long lack of rain.

Short Answer Questions
4.1 Define focus and epicentre.

Answer: Focus: break point underground. Epicentre: point above it on the surface. Say it as a pair and you will never mix them: focus is underground where the break happens, epicentre is on the surface above it.

4.2 Why is Pakistan at earthquake risk?

Answer: It lies near active plate boundaries. Pakistan's risk is not bad luck — it is position: the country sits near active plate boundaries, where plates push and rocks break, so quakes keep happening here.

4.3 Name two flood causes and two flood protections.

Answer: Causes: heavy rain, snowmelt. Protections: clear drains, safe building, warnings. Causes and protections pair up neatly: heavy rain and snowmelt cause floods, while clear drains, safe building on high ground and early warnings protect against them.

4.4 What should you never do in a flood?

Answer: Drive or walk through floodwater. Floodwater is dangerous even when it looks shallow: it can knock an adult down, hide a washed-out road, and carry sewage — so the rule is absolute, never enter it.

Long Answer Questions
4.1 Compare an earthquake and a flood as hazards: cause, warning time, and the safest immediate action for each.

Answer: Earthquake: sudden rock break, almost no warning → drop, cover, hold. Flood: rain/snowmelt, often hours of warning → move to high ground early. The comparison that earns marks is warning time: an earthquake gives almost no warning, so the only safe action is instant (drop, cover, hold), while a flood usually gives hours of warning, so the safe action is early movement to high ground. Same danger, opposite timing, opposite action.

4.2 Make a preparedness plan for a school in a flood-prone area, covering before, during and after a flood.

Answer: Before: drains, warnings, routes, drills. During: high ground, no floodwater, headcount. After: clean water, health checks, damage report. A school plan must cover three times: before (clear drains, warning system, marked routes, drills so children do not panic), during (move to high ground in order, never through floodwater, headcount at the safe point), and after (clean drinking water, health checks, and a damage report before reopening).

ENGLISH

This chapter faced natural disasters head-on: earthquakes (focus below, epicentre above) and volcanoes, floods and droughts as opposite water disasters, cyclones born over warm seas, landslides on steep bare slopes, and heatwaves and cold waves. The hopeful message is preparedness: safe building, clear drains, trees on slopes, heeded warnings and known evacuation routes cut losses — with drop, cover, hold for earthquakes and early high ground, never floodwater, for floods.

Revision guidance: Revise by hazard table: for earthquake, flood, cyclone and drought, write cause, warning time and safest action in one row each — this table answers most exam questions. Then rehearse the two action phrases out loud (drop, cover, hold; high ground, never floodwater) and the school flood plan in before/during/after order.
