Air pollution comes from smoke, vehicles, factories and burning waste; it causes smog, breathing illness and acid rain. Water pollution comes from sewage, factory waste and farm chemicals; it poisons rivers, fish and drinking water.
Pollution is easiest to understand by following it to your own body. Smoke from vehicles, factories and burning waste fills the air; breathed in day after day, it irritates lungs and makes breathing illnesses worse, and on still winter days it mixes with fog to make smog, the grey blanket that stings your eyes in Lahore and other cities. Some of that smoke also rises and falls back as acid rain, which damages crops and buildings. Water pollution follows the same path: sewage, factory waste and farm chemicals run into rivers, and from rivers into fish and into drinking water. The source is different, but the lesson is the same — what we throw away does not disappear.
Deforestation — cutting trees faster than they regrow — removes wildlife homes, dries springs and speeds soil erosion: rain washes bare soil away, silting rivers and cutting farm yields. Pakistan's forest cover is already low, so every loss matters.
Tree roots are like hands holding the soil together. Cut the trees faster than they can regrow, and three things happen in a chain. First, wildlife loses its homes and springs dry up, because forests store and release water slowly. Second, rain hits bare soil directly and washes it away — that is soil erosion, and the washed soil is the farmer's best topsoil, gone in one storm. Third, the washed soil silts up rivers, making them shallower, so they overflow more easily in the next flood. Pakistan already has low forest cover, so every patch of forest cut is a bigger loss here than in a country covered with trees.
Burning coal, oil and gas adds greenhouse gases (CO₂, methane) that trap heat — global warming. Results: hotter summers, melting glaciers, shifting rains, rising seas. Pakistan, though a small emitter, faces floods, heatwaves and glacier melt.
The greenhouse effect is not magic; it works like a blanket. Sunlight comes in and warms the Earth, and the Earth sends heat back up. Greenhouse gases — mainly carbon dioxide from burning coal, oil and gas, and methane from animals and waste — catch some of that outgoing heat and hold it, like a blanket getting thicker. A thicker blanket means hotter summers, melting glaciers, rains that come at the wrong time, and seas that rise. Pakistan burns relatively little fuel compared with big industrial countries, yet it faces floods, heatwaves and melting glaciers — that unfairness is worth stating plainly in an exam answer, because it shows you understand the topic, not just the definition.
Solutions start at home: reduce waste and energy, reuse bags and bottles, recycle paper, plastic and metal. Beyond home: plant trees, treat factory waste, use solar energy, and enforce pollution laws. Every citizen's small acts add up.
The 3Rs work best in order, and the order matters. Reduce comes first: use less plastic, less electricity, less waste, because the cleanest rubbish is the rubbish never made. Reuse comes second: a cloth bag, a refillable bottle, a repaired school bag — used again and again before anything is thrown away. Recycle comes third: paper, plastic and metal collected and made into new things, which still costs energy, so it is better than dumping but worse than reducing. Beyond the home, the same logic scales up: plant trees, treat factory waste before it reaches rivers, use solar energy where the sun is strong — and in Pakistan it is strong — and enforce the pollution laws that already exist.

Chapter list follows the PCTB Geography VI–VIII curriculum for Grade VIII. PECTAA has listed a revised Geography-8 for 2026–27; if your school book reorders or renames chapters, follow your school book and treat this page order as a guide.
Answer: Smoke + fog/pollution.
Answer: Soil erosion.
Answer: Greenhouse gases.
Answer: Reduce, reuse, recycle.
Answer: Air pollution.
Answer: Air: vehicles, factories. Water: sewage, factory waste. Pair them in your answer — air: vehicles and factories; water: sewage and factory waste — because the question asks for two of each, and a paired answer cannot lose a mark to vagueness.
Answer: Without roots and cover, rain washes bare soil away. Roots are the key word: with roots and plant cover, rain soaks in gently; without them, the same rain runs off fast and takes the soil with it.
Answer: Gases like CO₂ and methane that trap heat. Name the gases and the trap: carbon dioxide and methane trap outgoing heat like a blanket, and a thicker blanket means a warmer world.
Answer: Reduce: less plastic. Reuse: cloth bags. Recycle: paper. Use your own home for the examples — less plastic bags (reduce), a cloth bag used again (reuse), old newspapers collected for recycling (recycle) — because real examples are remembered under exam pressure.
Answer: Trees cut → roots gone → rain washes soil → rivers silt and overflow → fields flooded, topsoil lost → yields fall. The chain is the answer, so write it as arrows: trees cut → roots gone → rain washes bare soil → rivers silt up and overflow → fields flooded and topsoil lost → yields fall. Each arrow is one mark's worth of explanation, so do not skip a step.
Answer: Emissions come mostly from rich industrial countries, but Pakistan's glaciers, rivers and coasts face the effects. Actions: plant trees, save energy, cut plastic and waste. The unfairness is the point to state plainly: most emissions come from rich industrial countries, but Pakistan's glaciers, rivers and coasts suffer the effects. Then give actions a citizen can really take — plant trees, save energy, cut plastic and waste — because actions, not complaints, complete the answer.
This chapter traced the major environmental problems to their sources: air pollution from smoke, vehicles and factories (smog, breathing illness, acid rain) and water pollution from sewage, factory waste and farm chemicals. Deforestation removes the roots that hold soil, so rain erodes fields and silts rivers. Greenhouse gases from burning coal, oil and gas trap heat, warming the world and threatening Pakistan with floods, heatwaves and glacier melt — while the 3Rs, tree planting, waste treatment, solar energy and enforced laws offer real, household-level answers.
Revision guidance: Revise as chains, because examiners ask 'how does X cause Y?': deforestation → erosion → silt → flood → crop loss; burning fuel → greenhouse gases → warming → glacier melt and sea rise. Then give one example each of reduce, reuse and recycle from your own home — personal examples are easier to remember than textbook ones.
