Pakistan's climate is shaped by latitude (mostly subtropical), altitude (cold north, hot south), distance from the sea (coastal Karachi is mild, inland Lahore swings widely) and the monsoon winds that bring summer rain.
These four factors are the whole answer to almost any 'why is this place's climate like this?' question, so learn them as a checklist. Latitude: Pakistan lies mostly in the subtropics, so the sun is high and summers are hot. Altitude: climb higher and the air gets colder, which is why the north is cold even though it is on the same latitude as warm places — roughly, every 165 metres up feels about one degree cooler. Distance from the sea: the sea warms and cools slowly, so coastal Karachi stays mild, while inland Lahore swings between hot summers and cold winters. Monsoon winds: in summer, moist winds from the sea bring the rains that farming depends on.
Pakistan has four main seasons: winter (Dec–Feb, cold north, mild south), spring (Mar–Apr), summer (May–Jul, very hot in plains), and monsoon/autumn (Jul–Sep rains, then cooling). Farmers plan sowing and harvest around these seasons.
Pakistan's seasons are not just weather — they are the farmer's calendar. Winter (December to February) is cold in the north, with snow in the mountains, and mild in the south. Spring (March to April) is short and pleasant, with flowers and the wheat harvest approaching. Summer (May to July) is fiercely hot in the plains, with temperatures that make outdoor work dangerous at midday. Then the monsoon (July to September) breaks the heat with rain, and autumn cooling follows. If you remember the months, you can answer any season question: just say which months, what the weather is like, and what farmers are doing.
The summer monsoon blows moist air from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal over Pakistan (July–September), watering kharif crops like rice and cotton. Too little monsoon means drought; too much means floods — so the monsoon is both a blessing and a risk.
The monsoon deserves its own section because so much of Pakistan depends on it. In summer, the land heats up faster than the sea, air rises over the hot land, and moist air rushes in from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. That moist air brings the July-to-September rains that water kharif crops — rice and cotton above all. The blessing is obvious: without it, summer crops fail. The risk is equally obvious: too little rain means drought and empty canals, too much means floods that wash away the very crops the rain was meant to water. That is why the monsoon is both prayed for and feared.
Climate shapes houses (thick walls in hot plains, sloped roofs in snowy north), clothes (light cotton in summer, wool in winter), food and work. Climate change is now shifting rains and heating summers, so water saving and tree planting matter more than ever.
Climate is not an abstract chapter — it is your house, your clothes and your food. In the hot plains, thick walls keep the day's heat out and the night's coolness in, and flat roofs are used for sleeping on summer nights. In the snowy north, sloped roofs shed snow before its weight can break them. Clothes follow the same logic: light cotton in summer lets sweat dry, wool in winter traps warmth. Food follows the seasons too — summer brings mangoes and melons, winter brings oranges and dry fruits. And now climate change is shifting the old patterns: rains come later or heavier, summers get hotter, so saving water and planting trees are no longer slogans but daily necessities.

Chapter list follows the PCTB Geography VI–VIII curriculum for Grade VIII. PECTAA has listed a revised Geography-8 for 2026–27; if your school book reorders or renames chapters, follow your school book and treat this page order as a guide.
Answer: Subtropical.
Answer: Coastal.
Answer: Jul–Sep.
Answer: Rice and cotton.
Answer: Altitude.
Answer: Latitude, altitude, distance from sea, monsoon winds. The four-factor checklist is latitude, altitude, distance from sea, monsoon winds — write the four words first, then one line on each, and the question is structured before you even start explaining.
Answer: Winter Dec–Feb, spring Mar–Apr, summer May–Jul, monsoon/autumn Jul–Sep. Seasons with months earn more marks than seasons without: winter Dec–Feb, spring Mar–Apr, summer May–Jul, monsoon/autumn Jul–Sep — months turn a vague answer into a precise one.
Answer: It waters crops, but too little gives drought and too much gives floods. Both sides in one sentence: the monsoon waters crops, but too little gives drought and too much gives floods — blessing and risk are the same rain, in different amounts.
Answer: Thick walls in hot plains; sloped roofs in snowy north. Pair house with climate: thick walls in hot plains keep heat out, sloped roofs in the snowy north shed snow — each house is the climate, built in bricks.
Answer: Karachi: sea-level, coastal → mild, small range. Murree: high altitude, inland → cold winters, snow, larger range. Sea moderates Karachi; height cools Murree. Karachi is sea-level and coastal, so the sea moderates it: mild temperatures and a small range between summer and winter. Murree is high and inland, so altitude cools it: cold winters, snow, and a larger range. Sea moderates Karachi, height cools Murree — two factors, two cities, one clear contrast.
Answer: Rice: kharif, summer monsoon water and heat. Wheat: rabi, winter cool season, harvested in spring. Seasons decide the crop. Rice is kharif: it needs summer monsoon water and heat, so it is sown with the rains. Wheat is rabi: it needs the cool winter season and is harvested in spring. Tell the farmer the season decides the crop, not preference — sow rice in summer, wheat in winter.
This chapter explained Pakistan's climate with four factors — latitude (mostly subtropical), altitude (cold north, hot south), distance from the sea (mild Karachi, wide-swinging Lahore) and the monsoon winds. Four seasons organise the year (winter, spring, summer, monsoon/autumn) and the farmer's calendar with them. The monsoon itself is both blessing and risk, watering kharif rice and cotton while threatening drought when weak and floods when strong, and climate shapes houses, clothes, food and work — with water saving and tree planting now more urgent than ever.
Revision guidance: Revise with two tools: the four-factor checklist (use it on Karachi vs Murree) and the four-season month table (write months + weather + farmer's work for each). Then answer the rice-vs-wheat question in your own words: summer monsoon water and heat for rice, cool winter season for wheat — seasons decide the crop.
