This page is built from the PunjabTest library master for Class 8 Geography, Chapter 8. No official Class 8 Geography textbook was on disk when it was built, so no official-book page numbers are claimed here. The exercise below is the SLO-based practice exercise from the library master, not the official textbook exercise — use your school book for the official exercise. Chapter order follows the PCTB Geography VI–VIII curriculum for Grade VIII; PECTAA has listed a revised Geography-8 for 2026–27, so if your school book reorders or renames chapters, follow your school book.
Pakistan borders China (north), India (east), Afghanistan (north-west) and Iran (west), with the Arabian Sea to the south. Each neighbour differs in size, population, language and economy — geography makes Pakistan a crossroads of South, Central and West Asia.
Draw Pakistan's neighbours on a blank map and the word 'crossroads' explains itself. To the north is China, to the east India, to the north-west Afghanistan, to the west Iran, and to the south the Arabian Sea. That position puts Pakistan at the meeting point of South Asia, Central Asia (reached through Afghanistan) and West Asia (through Iran), with East Asia (China) just over the mountains. A crossroads is a place where roads meet — and here the roads are trade routes, languages, foods and peoples, all passing through or around Pakistan. That is an opportunity for trade and a responsibility for good relations at the same time.
China, a huge economy, links to Pakistan through the Karakoram Highway over the Khunjerab Pass — one of the highest paved roads on Earth. Trade and projects under CPEC use this mountain gateway.
The Karakoram Highway is famous for a reason: it climbs through some of the highest mountains on Earth to cross the Khunjerab Pass into China, and building it cost enormous effort and many lives. It matters because mountains usually block trade, and this road cuts a door through them. Under CPEC — the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor — that door is being widened into a whole network of roads, energy projects and the port at Gwadar, so goods can travel between western China and the Arabian Sea without the long sea journey around South Asia. For an exam answer, remember three words: highway, Khunjerab, corridor.
Correction to the library master (flagged, not hidden): the master text called China “the world’s most populous country”. Since 2023, United Nations estimates put India ahead of China in population, so that wording has been corrected here. China remains one of the world’s largest economies and Pakistan’s northern neighbour.
India is a vast, diverse neighbour with a long shared history and a disputed Kashmir frontier. Afghanistan, landlocked and mountainous, trades through Pakistan's ports and shares deep cultural and refugee ties. Iran, oil-rich and mountainous, shares Balochistan's border and a long history of trade.
Each of these three neighbours needs a different sentence in your answer, because each relationship is different. India is the vast eastern neighbour, sharing a long history, similar foods and languages, and a disputed Kashmir frontier that has kept relations tense. Afghanistan is landlocked and mountainous: with no sea coast of its own, its trade must pass through neighbours, and Pakistan's ports — especially Karachi — are its natural outlet, alongside deep cultural ties and a large refugee history. Iran is oil-rich and mountainous, sharing Balochistan's border and a long history of trade, with its own language and culture. One border, three stories — never lump them together.
Neighbours trade goods, energy and ideas — and also dispute borders and water. Regional bodies (like SAARC and ECO) try to turn geography into cooperation: shared roads, pipelines, markets and disaster help benefit all sides more than isolation does.
Neighbours cannot choose each other, so they have two choices: let geography become quarrels, or turn it into cooperation. Regional bodies exist for the second choice. SAARC brings South Asian countries together, and ECO links Pakistan with Iran, Turkey and Central Asian states. Their practical work is unglamorous but real: shared roads so trucks cross borders faster, pipelines and power lines so energy is shared, markets where farmers and factories sell more, and help after disasters, when a flood or earthquake in one country gets a response from neighbours. Isolation, by contrast, helps nobody — a landlocked neighbour with no trade stays poor, and a coastal country with no customers stays idle.

Chapter list follows the PCTB Geography VI–VIII curriculum for Grade VIII. PECTAA has listed a revised Geography-8 for 2026–27; if your school book reorders or renames chapters, follow your school book and treat this page order as a guide.
Answer: China.
Answer: Khunjerab Pass.
Answer: Iran.
Answer: Landlocked.
Answer: China.
Answer: China (N), India (E), Afghanistan (NW), Iran (W). Directions are the marks: China (north), India (east), Afghanistan (north-west), Iran (west) — a neighbour named without its direction is only half an answer.
Answer: A high mountain road linking Pakistan and China via Khunjerab. Three words carry this answer: a high mountain road, linking Pakistan and China, via the Khunjerab Pass — road, countries, pass.
Answer: It is landlocked, so its trade must pass through neighbours. Landlocked is the whole explanation: with no coast of its own, Afghanistan's trade must pass through neighbours, so Pakistan's ports are its natural outlet.
Answer: SAARC or ECO. Either body earns the mark — SAARC for South Asia or ECO for the wider region — but name one and say what it does (roads, markets, disaster help), not just its letters.
Answer: It touches South Asia (India), Central Asia (via Afghanistan), West Asia (Iran) and East Asia (China), with a sea coast and passes like Khunjerab linking them. Pakistan touches South Asia through India, Central Asia through Afghanistan, West Asia through Iran and East Asia through China, with a sea coast and passes like Khunjerab linking them — that is why 'crossroads' is not a fancy word but a map fact.
Answer: Benefit: trade and cultural exchange (CPEC, Afghan transit). Problem: border disputes and security pressures (Kashmir, frontier instability). Benefit and problem must both have examples: benefit — trade and cultural exchange, like CPEC and Afghan transit trade; problem — border disputes and security pressures, like Kashmir and frontier instability. One benefit without an example is a claim, not an answer.
This chapter placed Pakistan on the map of its neighbourhood: China to the north, India to the east, Afghanistan to the north-west, Iran to the west, and the Arabian Sea to the south — a crossroads of South, Central and West Asia. The Karakoram Highway over the Khunjerab Pass links Pakistan with China and carries CPEC trade; India, Afghanistan and Iran each bring a different history, from the disputed Kashmir frontier to Afghanistan's need for Pakistan's ports and Iran's Balochistan border. Regional bodies like SAARC and ECO try to turn this shared geography into roads, markets and disaster help instead of disputes.
Revision guidance: Revise by drawing the neighbour map from memory — four neighbours with directions, plus the sea — then adding one fact per neighbour (Khunjerab for China, Kashmir for India, landlocked ports for Afghanistan, Balochistan border for Iran). Finish with one benefit and one problem of having four different neighbours, each with an example.
