1. The Lahore Resolution 1940

ENGLISH

On 23 March 1940, at Lahore, the Muslim League passed a resolution that changed Indian history. It demanded independent states for Muslims in the north-western and eastern zones of India, where Muslims were in a majority. Read those words carefully: not more safeguards inside someone else's India, but states of their own, in the areas where Muslims already lived as a majority. That single change of words — from protection to homeland — is the whole turning point.

Why did the League take this step in 1940 and not earlier? Because everything in the previous chapters had pointed the same way. Sir Syed had taught Muslims to think of themselves as a separate voice. The League had tried safeguards for years — separate electorates, provincial autonomy, guarantees — and the search for a settlement in the 1930s had failed. Congress rule in the provinces in 1937–39 had alarmed many Muslims, and the reorganised League now had the organisation to make a big demand and mean it. The Resolution was not a sudden idea; it was the conclusion of a long argument.

The Resolution is often called the Pakistan Resolution, because the homeland it demanded soon came to be known as Pakistan. But note what it actually said: ‘independent states’ in the plural, in two zones. The details would be negotiated later, and the final shape — one Pakistan in the west and, at first, one in the east — came through the negotiations of 1946–47. What mattered in 1940 was the principle, stated in public, before the whole country: Muslims wanted a homeland of their own.

2. Quaid-e-Azam's Leadership

ENGLISH

A demand needs a leader who can carry it, and the League found one in Muhammad Ali Jinnah, known as Quaid-e-Azam — the Great Leader. Jinnah led with three qualities that matched the moment exactly. First, constitutional skill: he argued from law, agreements and elections, not from force, so the British and the Congress had to answer him in the language of politics, not of war. Second, discipline: he held one organisation together and stopped it from splitting into rival groups. Third, clarity: one demand, repeated without confusion, so that every Muslim village and every British office knew exactly what the League wanted.

His method can be summed up as one organisation, one demand, no violence as policy. That last part mattered enormously. By refusing violence as a method, Jinnah kept the League's case clean: it was a people asking, through votes and negotiations, for a homeland the majority of them wanted. It also kept the League united, because a movement built on violence usually splits over who controls the guns, while a movement built on votes stays together as long as it keeps winning them.

The result was a transformation. Jinnah took a scattered community — divided by province, language and class — and turned it into a negotiating nation: a people who could speak with one voice at a conference table and prove, at the ballot box, that the voice was real. That is why the title Quaid-e-Azam fits him: not because he shouted loudest, but because he made a whole people audible.

ENGLISH

After 1940, the League had to prove what it claimed: that it really spoke for the Muslims of India. The test came in the elections of 1945–46, held after the Second World War. The League won Muslim seats overwhelmingly — not just a few, but almost all of them. That victory answered the one question the British and the Congress kept asking: does the League speak for Muslims, or only for itself? After 1945–46, no honest observer could say it spoke only for itself.

Negotiations then tried, in order, unity and then partition. The Cabinet Mission of 1946 came from London with a plan to keep India united under a loose federation; it failed because the Congress and the League could not agree on how loose that federation would be and who would control what. The Mountbatten Plan of 1947 accepted the reality the Mission had failed to change: India would be partitioned, with a new state, Pakistan, for the Muslim-majority zones. Plans do not make history by themselves, but these two plans show the order of events clearly — unity was tried first, and partition came only when unity could not be agreed.

The final months were darkened by communal violence in 1946–47. As partition drew near, fear spread faster than any plan, and neighbours who had lived side by side turned on each other in many places. A good history answer never hides this: Pakistan was born through negotiation and election, but also amid violence and suffering that scarred both new countries. Remembering both halves — the achievement and the cost — is part of telling the story honestly.

4. Creation of Pakistan, 14 August 1947
🏷 Tags: 14 August 1947, creation of Pakistan, Governor-General, refugees, unity faith discipline
ENGLISH

On 14 August 1947, Pakistan came into being as an independent state, with Jinnah as its first Governor-General. The date is worth fixing carefully: 14 August is Pakistan's day, while India became independent on 15 August. Two neighbours, two days, two flags — and a border drawn in weeks that would take lifetimes to understand. For the exam, never swap the two dates.

The birth was joyful and terrible at once. Millions of people migrated across the new border amid violence and hardship, leaving homes, fields and family graves behind. The new state faced refugees who needed food and shelter, treasuries that were almost empty, and assets — offices, stores, army equipment, railway workshops — that had to be divided between two countries that were still learning to be countries. There were almost no trained administrators to spare, and the capital itself had to be built up from very little.

Pakistan began, in Jinnah's own words, with a message of unity, faith and discipline. Unity, because a new country of many provinces and languages could only survive if its people stood together. Faith, because the struggle had been carried by belief in a cause larger than any one person. Discipline, because freedom without discipline becomes disorder, and a newborn state cannot afford disorder. Those three words are still Pakistan's motto, and they are also a good summary of how the whole struggle, from 1857 to 1947, had been won: together, with belief, and in order.

Refugees and empty/divided resources (also administration, assets). Millions migrated; treasuries were empty and assets had to be divided.

Long Answer Questions /

Click a question to see its answer.

5.1 Explain how the demand changed from safeguards (1929) to a homeland (1940): what happened in between?

Settlement talks failed, Congress rule (1937–39) alarmed Muslims, and the League reorganised and won support — so safeguards no longer seemed enough, and a separate homeland became the demand.

5.2 Assess Jinnah's role: why is he called Quaid-e-Azam? Support your answer with three points from the chapter.

He united Muslims under one organisation, won the electoral mandate of 1945–46, and negotiated independence constitutionally, then led the new state.

On 23 March 1940 the Muslim League at Lahore demanded independent states for Muslims in the Muslim-majority zones of north-western and eastern India — turning the old demand for safeguards into a demand for a homeland, Pakistan. Under Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's constitutional, disciplined leadership, the League proved its claim in the elections of 1945–46, negotiated through the Cabinet Mission (1946) and the Mountbatten Plan (1947), and on 14 August 1947 Pakistan came into being, with Jinnah as its first Governor-General. The new state began amid migration, refugees and divided resources, with Jinnah's message of unity, faith and discipline.

Revision guidance: Tell this chapter as four steps in order: 1940 Resolution → Jinnah's leadership → 1945–46 election victory → 1947 independence. Keep the two great dates apart: 23 March 1940 is the demand, 14 August 1947 is the fulfilment. Any answer that mixes them loses marks.

Key dates to remember: 23 March 1940 — Lahore Resolution; 1945–46 — elections; 1946 — Cabinet Mission; 1947 — Mountbatten Plan; 14 August 1947 — creation of Pakistan.
