ENGLISH

Biology is the scientific study of life. The word comes from two Greek words: bios (life) and logos (study). It studies living things — their structure, function, growth, origin and evolution.

The three major fields are: Botany (study of plants), Zoology (study of animals) and Microbiology (study of microorganisms). Many smaller sub-fields also exist, e.g. Cytology (cells), Genetics (heredity), Ecology (organisms and environment), Physiology (functions) and Anatomy (structure).

4. 🧪 The Scientific Method — Hypothesis, Theory and Law

ENGLISH

The scientific method is the organised way scientists solve problems: (1) Observation — noticing a problem; (2) Hypothesis — a testable proposed explanation; (3) Deduction — the logical result ('if… then…'); (4) Experiment — testing the deduction; (5) Result and conclusion.

A hypothesis is a suggested answer that can be tested. When a hypothesis survives many experiments it becomes a theory (e.g. the theory of evolution). A theory tested again and again becomes a law or principle — a uniform fact of nature, e.g. Mendel's laws of inheritance and the Hardy–Weinberg law. Note: a hypothesis is not always correct — experiments often disprove it, and that is also progress.

Section D: Inquisitive Questions
1. Why is it important to classify biology into different branches such as botany, zoology, and microbiology? How does specialization benefit scientific research?

Answer: Classification into branches lets researchers study one area deeply instead of everything superficially. Specialists develop better tools, methods and knowledge for their field (e.g. a microbiologist's lab techniques), and different branches together give a complete picture of life.

2. How can a scientist apply the scientific method to confirm an observation that a certain plant species grows more quickly in shady places than in direct sunlight?

Answer: Observation: the plant grows faster in shade. Hypothesis: shade (less direct light) increases its growth. Deduction: if so, plants grown in shade will be taller than identical plants in direct sunlight. Experiment: grow two identical groups (one in shade, one in sun, same water/soil) and measure growth. Conclusion from the comparison.
