ENGLISH

The Linnaean system (after Carolus Linnaeus) arranges organisms in a hierarchy of seven ranks, from largest to smallest: Kingdom → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species. Each lower rank contains fewer, more similar organisms.

Example: the lion is Panthera leo — Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Class Mammalia, Order Carnivora, Family Felidae, Genus Panthera, Species leo. Corn (maize) is Zea mays — Kingdom Plantae. Remember the order with: 'King Philip Came Over For Good Soup'.

4. 🧬 Three Domains of Living Organisms
🏷 Tags: three domains, Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya, Archaea vs Bacteria
ENGLISH

All life is divided into three domains: (1) Bacteria — true bacteria, prokaryotic, cell wall of peptidoglycan; (2) Archaea — prokaryotic like bacteria but genetically different, often living in extreme places (hot springs, salty water); (3) Eukarya — all eukaryotes (protists, fungi, plants, animals), whose cells have a nucleus.

Archaea vs Bacteria: both lack a nucleus, but their cell walls differ (archaea lack peptidoglycan) and their genes are different. Bacteria include Escherichia coli; yeast belongs to Eukarya (kingdom Fungi).

5. 🍄 Four Kingdoms of Eukarya + Status of Viruses
🏷 Tags: four kingdoms, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia
ENGLISH

Domain Eukarya has four kingdoms: Protista (mostly unicellular eukaryotes), Fungi (heterotrophic, absorb nutrients, cell wall of chitin, reproduce by spores), Plantae (multicellular, photosynthetic) and Animalia (multicellular, heterotrophic, no cell wall — e.g. lion).

Viruses cannot be placed in any kingdom because they lack cellular structure and organelles, cannot carry out life processes alone, and are not made of cells. They are on the borderline between living and non-living — they only reproduce inside a host cell. That is why classification of viruses remains a challenge.

6. ✍️ Binomial Nomenclature — Rules of Scientific Names
🏷 Tags: Binomial nomenclature, Genus + species, genus and species
ENGLISH

Binomial nomenclature (Linnaeus) gives every species a two-part scientific name: Genus + species, e.g. humans are Homo sapiens. Rules: the genus name starts with a capital letter, the species name is small; the whole name is written in italics (or underlined when handwritten); the name is usually Latin or Latinised.

Advantage: one scientific name is understood by scientists in every language — no confusion from local names. From a scientific name you can tell the genus and species of the organism (e.g. Homo sapiens → genus Homo, species sapiens).

Section B: Short Questions
1. What is the term used to describe the variety of organisms in ecosystems?

Answer: Biodiversity — the variety of organisms in a particular area or ecosystem.

2. How is biodiversity crucial for humans and for the planet Earth?

Answer: It provides food, medicine and clean air, keeps ecosystems balanced and healthy, and supports the web of life on which humans depend.

3. What are the seven taxonomic ranks used in the Linnaean system?

Answer: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.

4. Write the taxonomic ranks of lion and corn.

Answer: Lion (Panthera leo): Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Class Mammalia, Order Carnivora, Family Felidae, Genus Panthera, Species leo. Corn (Zea mays): Kingdom Plantae, Phylum Anthophyta, Class Monocotyledonae, Order Poales, Family Poaceae, Genus Zea, Species mays.

5. What are the basic differences between archaea and bacteria?

Answer: Both are prokaryotes without a nucleus, but archaea lack peptidoglycan in their cell walls, have different genes, and often live in extreme environments (hot springs, salty water).

6. What are the shortcomings of the three-kingdom classification system?

Answer: It could not properly place unicellular eukaryotes, bacteria and some other groups — e.g. it mixed prokaryotes and eukaryotes and had no place for organisms that did not fit plants, animals or protists clearly.

7. Which kingdom includes organisms that are multicellular and heterotrophic, and lack cell walls?

Answer: Kingdom Animalia — multicellular animals, heterotrophic, without cell walls.

8. Enlist the distinguishing characteristics of fungi.

Answer: Eukaryotic, heterotrophic (absorb nutrients), cell wall of chitin, reproduce by spores, mostly multicellular (yeast is unicellular).

9. List the three domains that encompass all living things.

Answer: Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya.

10. Why cannot we classify viruses in any kingdom?

Answer: Viruses lack cellular structure and organelles, cannot carry out life processes on their own, and are not made of cells — they reproduce only inside a host cell, so they fit no kingdom.

11. How does binomial nomenclature facilitate learning about organisms across different languages?

Answer: One scientific name (Genus + species, in Latin) is the same everywhere, so scientists of all languages identify the same organism without confusion from local names.

Section C: Long Questions
1. Discuss biodiversity and its significance in maintaining the health of ecosystems.

Answer: Biodiversity is the variety of organisms in an area. It keeps ecosystems healthy: different species pollinate crops, recycle nutrients, control pests, purify air and water, and provide food and medicine. Losing species weakens these services and makes ecosystems fragile.

2. Explain the importance of classification in biology and how it helps us understand the relationships between different organisms.

Answer: Classification organises the huge variety of life into groups by similarities, making study possible. It shows evolutionary relationships — organisms in the same group share ancestors and features — and helps identify, name and conserve organisms.

3. Describe the Linnaean system of classification in detail, stating the seven taxonomic ranks and their relationships.

Answer: The Linnaean system arranges organisms in a hierarchy: Kingdom (largest) → Phylum → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species (smallest). Each rank contains fewer, more similar organisms; species in the same genus are most closely related, while the kingdom holds the widest variety.

4. Compare and contrast Archaea and Bacteria, focusing on their key characteristics.

Answer: Similarities: both are prokaryotes, unicellular, without a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles. Differences: bacterial walls contain peptidoglycan, archaeal walls do not; their genes differ; archaea often live in extreme environments (hot, salty, acidic), while bacteria live almost everywhere.

5. Describe the distinguishing characteristics of the four kingdoms within the domain Eukarya.

Answer: Protista: mostly unicellular eukaryotes. Fungi: heterotrophic, absorb food, chitin walls, spores. Plantae: multicellular, photosynthetic, cellulose walls. Animalia: multicellular, heterotrophic, ingest food, no cell walls, can move (at least in some stage).

6. Discuss the challenges of classifying viruses within the traditional three domains of life.

Answer: Viruses fit none of the three domains because they are not cells: they have no cytoplasm, organelles or independent metabolism, and they reproduce only inside host cells. They sit between living and non-living, so traditional classification (based on cells) cannot place them.

7. Explain the rules and guidelines for suggesting scientific names to organisms.

Answer: A scientific name has two parts: genus (capital first letter) + species (small letters), written in italics (underlined if handwritten), usually in Latin. The name must be unique, and the genus name is shared by related species.

Section D: Inquisitive Questions
1. How might placing an organism in the incorrect taxonomic group affect conservation or scientific studies?

Answer: A wrong group misleads research: its relatives, habits and needs are guessed wrongly, so conservation plans protect the wrong habitat or miss real threats, and medicines or studies based on its supposed relatives may fail.

2. Imagine you discover a new organism. What steps would you take to classify and name it according to the principles of binomial nomenclature?

Answer: Observe and describe its features; compare with known groups to place it in domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family and genus; check it is truly new; then give it a two-part Latin name (Genus + species) with genus capitalised and species in small letters, in italics.
