🏷 Tags: cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum
ENGLISH

A generalised cell has: cell membrane (controls what enters/leaves), cytoplasm (jelly where organelles sit), nucleus (DNA, controls the cell), mitochondria (release energy — powerhouse), ribosomes (make proteins), endoplasmic reticulum (transport + making), Golgi body (packing), lysosomes (digestion/clean-up) and vacuole (storage).

Plant cells also have a cell wall (support), chloroplasts (photosynthesis) and a large central vacuole. Animal cells do not have these three. The nucleus holds DNA in chromosomes and directs all cell activities.

4. 🧠 Cell Specialisation — Different Cells, Different Jobs
🏷 Tags: specialised, mesophyll cells, epidermal cells, neurons, muscle cells, red blood cells
ENGLISH

In multicellular bodies, cells become specialised for one job — their shape fits their function. Examples from the book: mesophyll cells (leaf, packed with chloroplasts for photosynthesis), epidermal cells (outer covering/protection), neurons (long fibres to carry messages), muscle cells (contract to move), red blood cells (disc-shaped, carry oxygen, no nucleus in mammals) and liver cells (many chemical jobs).

Specialisation is efficient: instead of every cell doing everything badly, each cell type does one job well, and together they run the whole body.

5. 🌱 Stem Cells — Unspecialised Cells
🏷 Tags: Stem cells, unspecialised, differentiate
ENGLISH

Stem cells are unspecialised cells: they have not yet taken a special job. They can divide and produce new cells, and under the right signals they can differentiate into specialised cells (e.g. blood, muscle or nerve cells).

That is why stem cells matter for growth, repair and medicine: they can replace damaged cells. In the body they act as a reserve of fresh, uncommitted cells.

Section B: Short Questions
1. What are the major functions of the cell membrane?

Answer: It encloses the cell, controls what enters and leaves (selective permeability), protects the cell, and helps in cell recognition and communication.

2. What key role does the Golgi apparatus play in eukaryotic cells?

Answer: It receives proteins from the ER, modifies, packs and sends them to their destinations inside or outside the cell.

3. How do lysosomes contribute to the cell's functioning?

Answer: Lysosomes digest worn-out organelles, food particles and invaders with their enzymes — the cell's clean-up and recycling system.

4. Which organelle detoxifies harmful substances and breaks down lipids?

Answer: The smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) — it detoxifies drugs/poisons and synthesises lipids.

5. What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum responsible for?

Answer: Synthesis of lipids, detoxification of harmful substances, and (in muscle cells) storage of calcium ions.

6. How do the vacuoles in plant cells differ from vacuoles in animal cells?

Answer: Plant cells have one large central vacuole (stores water, keeps the cell turgid); animal cells have small, temporary vacuoles.

7. What could happen if lysosomal enzymes stop working properly?

Answer: Waste and worn-out material would pile up inside the cell, damaging it and possibly killing it — as in lysosomal storage diseases.

8. Why are the cristae important for cellular respiration?

Answer: Cristae are folds of the inner mitochondrial membrane that greatly increase its surface area, so more energy-releasing reactions (ATP production) can happen.

9. How are chromatin and chromosomes related?

Answer: Chromatin is the loose DNA-plus-protein material in the nucleus; when the cell divides, chromatin condenses and coils into visible chromosomes.

10. Which type of cell is responsible for sending nerve signals?

Answer: Neurons (nerve cells) — with long fibres they carry messages through the body.

11. What do mesophyll cells do in plant leaves?

Answer: They contain many chloroplasts and are the main site of photosynthesis — they make glucose for the plant.

12. How would you define a stem cell?

Answer: A stem cell is an unspecialised cell that can divide and, under the right signals, differentiate into specialised cell types.

13. Name the chemical compounds that make up: a. Cell membrane b. Fungal cell wall c. Plant cell wall d. Bacterial cell wall e. Ribosomes f. Chromosomes.

Answer: a. Lipids (phospholipid bilayer) + proteins. b. Chitin. c. Cellulose. d. Peptidoglycan (murein). e. RNA + protein. f. DNA + proteins (histones).

14. Label the parts of the cell diagrams given in the book.

Answer: A typical animal cell diagram is labelled: cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, nucleolus, mitochondria, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum (rough/smooth), Golgi apparatus, lysosomes and vacuoles. A plant cell diagram additionally labels: cell wall, chloroplasts and the large central vacuole.

Section D: Inquisitive Questions
1. What impact might mitochondrial dysfunction or absence have on other organelles' ability to operate in a cell?

Answer: Without working mitochondria, ATP supply collapses, so energy-hungry jobs stop: active transport at the membrane fails, the ER and Golgi cannot process and pack proteins, and the cell cannot maintain its internal balance — eventually the cell dies.

2. What may happen if the coordination between the ribosomes and the nucleus were to fail, and why is it so important?

Answer: The nucleus sends instructions (mRNA) that ribosomes read to make proteins. If coordination fails, wrong, missing or no proteins are made — enzymes, membranes and structures cannot be built or repaired, so the cell stops working and dies.
