1. 🧬 What are Biomolecules?
🏷 Tags: Biomolecules, nucleic acids, water
ENGLISH

Biomolecules are the molecules made by living things — the chemicals of life. The main types are carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, plus water, which is the most abundant molecule in cells. They are built mostly from carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen (and sulphur/phosphorus in some).

Small units join to make big molecules: sugars → polysaccharides, amino acids → proteins, fatty acids + glycerol → lipids, nucleotides → nucleic acids. This chapter studies each type and its job.

2. 🍞 Carbohydrates — Energy Food
🏷 Tags: Carbohydrates, energy, Monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides
ENGLISH

Carbohydrates are made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, and are the main energy source. Monosaccharides (single sugars: glucose, fructose) are the simplest; disaccharides (sucrose, lactose) are two sugars joined; polysaccharides (starch in plants, glycogen in animals, cellulose in plant walls) are many sugars joined.

Glucose is the cell's favourite fuel — it is broken down in respiration to release energy. Starch stores energy in plants; glycogen stores it in animals (liver and muscles).

3. 🥩 Proteins — Built from Amino Acids
🏷 Tags: Proteins, amino acids, enzymes, structural, transport, defence
ENGLISH

Proteins are made of amino acids (about 20 types) joined in chains. The order of amino acids decides the protein's shape, and its shape decides its job. Jobs include: enzymes (speed up reactions), structural proteins (hair, nails, collagen), transport (haemoglobin carries oxygen), defence (antibodies) and hormones (insulin).

Proteins are the working molecules of the cell — a cell's proteins decide what it can do.

4. 🫒 Lipids — Fats, Oils and Membranes
🏷 Tags: Lipids, glycerol + fatty acids, energy store, insulation, protection, membranes
ENGLISH

Lipids (fats and oils) are made of glycerol + fatty acids. They do not dissolve in water. Jobs: energy store (more energy per gram than carbohydrates), insulation (fat under skin keeps warmth), protection (around organs) and membranes — the cell membrane is a lipid bilayer.

Saturated fats (usually solid, animal fats) differ from unsaturated fats (usually liquid oils, plant oils). Too much fat in diet is linked with heart disease, but some fat is essential.

5. 🧬 Nucleic Acids — DNA and RNA at Workنیوکلک ایسڈز — ڈی این اے اور آر این اے کا کام
🏷 Tags: Nucleic acids, nucleotides, DNA, RNA
ENGLISH

Nucleic acids are made of nucleotides (sugar + phosphate + base). DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is double-stranded and stores hereditary information — the instructions for making proteins. Its bases pair A–T and C–G. RNA (ribonucleic acid) is single-stranded and helps carry out those instructions (mRNA carries the message, tRNA brings amino acids, rRNA builds ribosomes).

Working together: DNA (in the nucleus) → mRNA copy → ribosome reads it → protein is made. This flow (DNA → RNA → protein) runs every cell.

Section C: Long Questions
1. Write a comprehensive note on the structures and roles of the three classes of carbohydrates.

Answer: Monosaccharides (single sugars, e.g. glucose, fructose): quick energy, building units. Disaccharides (two sugars, e.g. sucrose = glucose + fructose, lactose, maltose): transport/storage sugars, sweet. Polysaccharides (many sugars): starch (plant energy store), glycogen (animal energy store), cellulose (plant wall structure, fibre).

2. Discuss the functions of proteins.

Answer: Enzymes (speed reactions), structural (collagen, keratin), transport (haemoglobin carries oxygen), defence (antibodies), movement (myosin in muscles), hormones (insulin regulates sugar), storage and signalling. Proteins do most of the cell's work.

3. What are fatty acids? Explain their types.

Answer: Fatty acids are long hydrocarbon chains with a carboxyl group, the building units of lipids. Saturated fatty acids have no double bonds (straight chains, solid fats, mostly animal). Unsaturated fatty acids have one or more double bonds (bent chains, liquid oils, mostly plant).

4. Describe the basic structure of fats and oils. Explain how lipids play a role in energy storage.

Answer: A fat/oil molecule (triglyceride) is one glycerol joined to three fatty acids. Fats are solid at room temperature (saturated), oils liquid (unsaturated). Lipids store more energy per gram than carbohydrates; adipose tissue stores them long-term, releasing fatty acids for respiration when needed, and they also insulate and protect organs.

5. Explain the double helical structure of DNA, and discuss the base pairing in this structure.

Answer: DNA is a double helix: two strands of nucleotides twisted together, sugar-phosphate backbones outside, bases inside. Bases pair by hydrogen bonds: adenine (A) always with thymine (T), cytosine (C) always with guanine (G). This complementary pairing lets DNA copy itself accurately.

6. Explain how information in DNA is converted to RNA and then to proteins.

Answer: Transcription: a DNA sequence is copied into messenger RNA (mRNA) in the nucleus. Translation: mRNA moves to a ribosome, where tRNA brings amino acids in the mRNA's order and rRNA helps join them into a protein chain, which then folds into a working protein.

Section D: Inquisitive Questions
1. Evaluate the importance of water in the functioning of biomolecules.

Answer: Water is the medium of life: it dissolves biomolecules and carries them, enables reactions (hydrolysis), keeps cells turgid, regulates temperature, and forms the environment in which enzymes and membranes work. Without water, biomolecules cannot function.

2. Find the amount/percentage of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and water in the following food products and compare them with each other: Roti (40gm), Burger, Cucumber, Egg, Rice (100gm), Potato fries (100gm), Carrot.

Answer: Typical values (per 100 g unless stated): Roti (40 g) — mostly carbohydrates (~20 g) with some protein and little fat, low water. Burger — high fat and protein, moderate carbohydrates, moderate water. Cucumber — about 95% water, very low carbohydrates, protein and fat. Egg — about 75% water, ~13% protein, ~11% fat, almost no carbohydrate. Rice (100 g, cooked) — mostly carbohydrates (~28 g) with little protein and fat, ~70% water. Potato fries (100 g) — high carbohydrates (~35 g) and fat (~15 g) from frying, some protein. Carrot — about 88% water, ~10% carbohydrates, little protein and fat. Comparison: cucumber and carrot are water-rich and low-energy; roti and rice are carbohydrate-rich; egg and burger are protein/fat-rich; fries are the most energy-dense because of added fat.
