ENGLISH

Plants transport materials through vascular tissues: xylem carries water and dissolved salts upwards from roots to leaves; phloem carries food (sugars) both ways — from leaves to all parts (this is translocation). Together they form vascular bundles.

Water moves up mainly by transpiration pull (see next section) plus root pressure and cohesion of water molecules.

3. 💧 Transpiration and Transport of Water and Salts
🏷 Tags: Transpiration, stomata, osmosis
ENGLISH

Transpiration is the loss of water vapour from leaves, mainly through stomata (tiny pores, guarded by guard cells). It pulls water up the xylem like a suction pump (transpiration pull), cools the plant, and helps salts move up too. Factors increasing it: heat, wind, low humidity, light (stomata open).

Water enters roots by osmosis (root hairs have a large surface area), and salts enter by diffusion/active transport. Water then moves cell to cell into the xylem.

ENGLISH

Translocation is food transport in phloem: sugars made in leaves move to roots, fruits, growing tips and storage organs. It needs energy (living phloem cells) and goes from source (leaf) to sink (where food is used/stored).

Gaseous exchange in plants happens through stomata (leaves) and lenticels (stems): CO₂ in for photosynthesis, O₂ out; at night O₂ in for respiration, CO₂ out. Excretion in plants: waste gases leave via stomata, excess water via transpiration/guttation, and solid wastes are stored in dead tissues, bark or falling leaves; some plants excrete as latex (rubber plant) or resins.

The pressure-flow mechanism explains translocation: sugars are actively loaded into phloem sieve tubes at the source; the high sugar concentration draws water from xylem into phloem by osmosis, raising pressure; at the sink, sugars are removed, pressure falls and water returns to xylem — so food flows in bulk from source to sink. In most plants food is transported as sucrose.

5. 🧂 Osmotic Adjustments in Plants
🏷 Tags: Osmotic adjustment, mesophytes, hydrophytes, xerophytes, halophytes
ENGLISH

Osmotic adjustment is how plant cells keep the right water balance. When soil water is scarce (drought) or salty, plant cells accumulate solutes (sugars, salts, amino acids) so water still enters by osmosis instead of leaving. Guard cells do this daily: they gain solutes → take in water → become turgid → stomata open; losing solutes/water → flaccid → stomata close.

Halophytes (salt-tolerant plants) are experts at this: they store salts in vacuoles or excrete them through salt glands, so their cytoplasm stays safe. By water availability (habitat) plants are of four types: mesophytes (normal water), hydrophytes (water plants), xerophytes (dry places — with succulent water-storing organs, thick cuticle, deep roots) and halophytes (salty places). Each adjusts osmotically to its own habitat.

Is diagram ko samjho: How osmotic adjustment opens and closes stomata.
Section C: Long Questions
1. Describe the events involved in the opening and closing of stomata.

Answer: Opening: guard cells actively take in potassium ions (K+) and solutes, water follows by osmosis, guard cells become turgid and bow outward, opening the pore. Closing: potassium and solutes leave, water leaves, guard cells become flaccid and close the pore. Light, CO₂ level and water availability control this.

2. Explain the internal structure of root and describe the uptake of salt and water by root.

Answer: A root has epidermis with root hairs (huge surface area), cortex, endodermis and vascular cylinder (xylem, phloem). Water enters root hairs by osmosis (soil water higher than cell sap), then moves cell to cell into xylem. Salts enter by diffusion (if concentrated outside) and active transport (using energy, against the gradient), then move into xylem for upward transport.

3. Describe the effects of wind and humidity as factors affecting the rate of transpiration.

Answer: Wind removes water vapour from around the leaf, keeping the diffusion gradient steep, so transpiration rises (calm air lets vapour gather and slows it). High humidity means air already holds much vapour, so the gradient is small and transpiration falls; low humidity raises it.

4. Describe the mechanism of transport of water and salt in plants.

Answer: Water enters root hairs by osmosis and salts by diffusion/active transport; both reach the xylem. Water rises as a continuous column by transpiration pull (suction from leaf evaporation), helped by cohesion (water molecules sticking together) and adhesion (sticking to xylem walls), plus root pressure. Salts travel dissolved in this water stream to leaves.

5. Explain the mechanism of food translocation by Pressure Flow Mechanism.

Answer: At the source (leaf), sugars are actively loaded into phloem sieve tubes; water follows from xylem by osmosis, raising pressure. At the sink (roots, fruits), sugars are unloaded, water leaves phloem back to xylem, pressure falls. The pressure difference drives bulk flow of food solution from source to sink. In most plants the transported sugar is sucrose.

6. How do the plants excrete extra water and salts from their bodies?

Answer: Extra water leaves by transpiration (vapour through stomata/lenticels) and guttation (liquid drops through hydathodes). Extra salts are stored in vacuoles, shed with falling leaves/bark, or excreted through salt glands (halophytes) or as latex/gum in some plants.

7. Describe the process of gaseous exchange in plants.

Answer: Leaves exchange gases through stomata: CO₂ diffuses in for photosynthesis and O₂ diffuses out during the day; at night O₂ diffuses in for respiration and CO₂ out. Stems exchange through lenticels; roots exchange with air in soil spaces. Guard cells regulate stomatal opening to balance gas exchange with water loss.

8. Describe the mechanisms/adaptations in plants for excretion of wastes.

Answer: Plants excrete waste gases (O₂, CO₂) through stomata and lenticels; excess water through transpiration and guttation; and solid/chemical wastes by storing them in vacuoles, dead tissues, bark, or falling leaves, or by secreting latex (rubber), gums and resins (Acacia, pine). They have no special excretory organs like animals.

9. Explain osmotic adjustments in hydrophytes, xerophytes and halophytes.

Answer: Hydrophytes (water plants) have plenty of water, so they need little adjustment — thin cuticles, large air spaces, and stomata often on upper leaf surfaces. Xerophytes (dry places) conserve water: thick cuticle, sunken stomata, succulent water-storing organs, deep roots, and cells that accumulate solutes to keep water. Halophytes (salty places) accumulate solutes to draw water in against salt, store salt in vacuoles, or excrete it through salt glands, protecting the cytoplasm.

Section D: Inquisitive Questions
1. Why do plants transpire more on a windy day compared to a humid one?

Answer: Wind sweeps water vapour away from the leaf surface, keeping the air around it dry, so the diffusion gradient stays steep and vapour keeps leaving fast. On a humid day the air is already full of vapour, so the gradient is small and transpiration slows down.
