This chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 9 Chemistry. No official Class 9 Chemistry book was on disk for this build, so no book page numbers are claimed. The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.
Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the properties, composition and structure of substances, and the physical and chemical changes in matter and the laws that govern these changes.
Composition means finding the percentages of elements and compounds in a sample. Structure means how atoms are arranged in matter. Changes in matter may absorb or give out energy.
"Chemistry is the study of matter, its properties, composition, and interactions with other matter and energy."
Chemistry is divided into many branches so scientists can focus on one area and make breakthroughs. Main branches: Physical, Organic, Inorganic, Analytical, Biochemistry, Environmental, Nuclear, Medicinal, Polymer, Geochemistry and Astrochemistry.
An element is made of only one kind of atom and cannot be broken down by chemical means (e.g. iron, oxygen). A compound is two or more elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio (e.g. water H2O). A mixture is substances combined physically, in no fixed ratio, and separable by physical means.
Mixtures can be homogeneous (same throughout, e.g. salt solution) or heterogeneous (not uniform, e.g. concrete mixture). Solutions are homogeneous mixtures. Colloids have tiny particles dispersed through a medium (e.g. milk). Suspensions have visible particles that settle (e.g. muddy water, mixture of AgCl in water).
Colloids scatter light but true solutions do not. Milk is a colloid; a solution of calcium hydroxide or potassium nitrate in water is a true solution; hot chocolate and concrete are heterogeneous mixtures.
