The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.

1. 🌍 The Atmosphere and Clean Air
🏷 Tags: atmosphere, layers, clean air, composition
ENGLISH

Earth is covered with a blanket of air called the atmosphere, made up of several layers of gases. Clean, dry air is approximately 78% nitrogen (N2), 21% oxygen (O2), and the remainder (about 1%) a mixture of noble gases (mainly argon, about 0.9%) and carbon dioxide (about 0.04%), plus traces of other gases and water vapour.

A pollutant is any substance in the air which has an adverse effect on human health, quality of life, and the natural functioning of the ecosystem. The main air pollutants are oxides of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur, along with methane and particulate matter.

Major sources of pollutants are human activities — especially the burning of fossil fuels in vehicles, factories and power plants. Pollutants harm not only human beings but the whole ecosystem.

5. 🌧️ Acid Rain, Smog and Photochemical Smog
🏷 Tags: acid rain, smog, photochemical smog
ENGLISH

Acid rain forms when oxides of nitrogen and sulphur mix with moisture in the atmosphere: SO2 + water → sulphurous/sulphuric acid; NO2 + water → nitric/nitrous acid. The acids fall as rain (or snow), damaging forests (acid rain strips nutrients from soil and damages leaves), killing aquatic life in lakes, corroding buildings and statues, and harming crops. Acid rain is most likely around industrial areas and big cities, where SO2 and NOx emissions are highest.

Smog is smoke + fog: in winter, smoke particles mix with fog and hang over cities, cutting visibility and irritating lungs. Smog is not felt in summer mainly because fog is not present in summer — and rising warm air carries smoke upward and away.

Photochemical smog needs three ingredients: nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and sunlight. Sunlight drives reactions that produce ground-level ozone and other irritants, giving a brownish haze that stings the eyes and lungs even on bright days.

Section 5: Investigative Questions

1. Major Pakistani cities experience a very high AQI in winter which renders them the most polluted cities in the world. Point out some of the major causes of high AQI in these cities.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Winter temperature inversion traps cold, polluted air near the ground; fog mixes with smoke to form smog; crop-residue (stubble) burning adds smoke; brick kilns, factories, vehicles and open waste burning add particulates, CO, SO2 and NOx; low wind speeds prevent dispersal; and dust from construction and dry land adds more particles. Together these push AQI to hazardous levels, especially in Lahore, Karachi and other large cities.

2. Why does AQI not rise in Pakistan in hot days of summer?

Answer / جواب

Answer: In hot summer, the ground heats strongly, warm air rises and carries pollutants upward and away; winds are stronger and disperse emissions; there is no fog to mix with smoke into smog; and crop-residue burning and brick-kiln activity are lower than in winter. Strong sunlight also breaks down some pollutants. The result is better dispersion and lower AQI despite continued emissions.

3. How has climate change affected Pakistan during the last five years?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Pakistan has faced devastating floods (notably the 2022 floods that submerged large areas, displaced millions and damaged crops and infrastructure), record-breaking heatwaves (temperatures above 50 °C in parts of Sindh and Punjab), changing and more erratic monsoon rainfall, faster glacier melt in the north feeding flood risk, and worsening droughts in some regions — damaging agriculture, water supplies, health and the economy.
