SOURCE NOTE

This chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 9 Chemistry. No official Class 9 Chemistry book was on disk for this build, so no book page numbers are claimed. The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.

1. 🔬 Discovery of Subatomic Particlesذیلی ایٹمی ذرات کی دریافت
🏷 Tags: subatomic particles, electron, proton, neutron, discharge tube
ENGLISH

John Dalton gave evidence for atoms, but discharge-tube experiments showed atoms are not the smallest particles. They are made of still smaller particles: electrons and protons; the neutron was discovered separately.

Electrons come from cathode rays in a discharge tube (negative particles). Protons come from canal rays (positive particles). The same electrons and protons are found in all elements, whatever gas or metal is used — proved because their charge-to-mass ratio never changes.

Because protons and neutrons are ~1836 times heavier than electrons, almost all the mass of an atom is in its nucleus.

2. 🪐 Rutherford and Bohr Modelsردرفورڈ اور بوہر ماڈل
🏷 Tags: Rutherford model, Bohr model, nucleus, shells
ENGLISH

Rutherford discovered that every atom has a central part, the nucleus. Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus; electrons revolve around it. A neutral atom has equal numbers of electrons and protons.

Bohr's model says the electron revolves in definite circular paths called orbits or shells. While it stays in one orbit its energy remains fixed. An electron farther from the nucleus has more energy — so energy increases from the first shell to the second and beyond.

Shell capacities: 1st shell holds at most 2, 2nd holds 8, 3rd holds 18 electrons. The model is an aid to understand the atom — a simplified picture, not a photograph.

3. 🌊 The Quantum Electronکوانٹم الیکٹران

ENGLISH

Modern theory changed the classical picture. Electrons are quantum particles with probabilistic paths — their exact path and location cannot be mapped (uncertainty principle). We can only speak of the probability of finding an electron in a region.

The old classical concept was a tiny solid ball circling the nucleus like a planet around the Sun. The new concept is wave-like: the electron behaves like a wave and a particle, spread as a probability cloud.

In a uniform electric field, a positively charged particle bends toward the negative plate and a negatively charged particle toward the positive plate — this deflection is how scientists study charged particles.

4. 🔢 Atomic Number and Mass Numberایٹمی نمبر اور کمیت نمبر
🏷 Tags: atomic number, mass number, proton number, Z, A
ENGLISH

Proton number / atomic number (Z) = number of protons in the nucleus. It is unique to each element and is used to arrange elements in the periodic table. Changing it changes the element's identity.

Nucleon number / mass number (A) = protons + neutrons in the nucleus. So neutrons = A − Z.

Worked example: 21083Bi has Z = 83 protons and A = 210, so neutrons = 210 − 83 = 127.

An atom absorbs energy when an electron jumps to a higher shell, and gives out (evolves) energy — often as light — when the electron falls back to a lower shell.

Z aur A samjho: Z = protons کی تعداد (element کی پہچان), A = protons + neutrons; neutral atom میں electrons protons کے برابر ہوتے ہیں.
Section 5: Investigative Questionsحصہ 5: تحقیقی سوالات

1. How can scientists synthesize elements in the laboratory?

Answer / جواب

Answer: By nuclear reactions: light nuclei are fused, or a heavy target nucleus is bombarded with high-speed particles (protons, neutrons, alpha particles or other nuclei) in a particle accelerator. The new, heavier nucleus formed is a new — often short-lived, synthetic — element, identified by its radiation. جواب: نیوکلیائی رد عمل سے: ہلکے مرکزے ملائے جاتے ہیں یا بھاری ہدف مرکزے پر تیز ذرات کی بمباری کی جاتی ہے؛ بننے والا نیا بھاری مرکزہ نیا مصنوعی عنصر ہوتا ہے۔

2. A system just like our solar system exists in an atom. Comment on this statement.

Answer / جواب

Answer: The statement is only partly true. It fits Bohr's model — a central nucleus like the Sun with electrons like planets. But it breaks down in quantum theory: electrons do not follow fixed planetary orbits; they exist as probability clouds, their paths cannot be mapped, and they show wave behaviour. The solar-system picture is a useful analogy, not a true picture. جواب: یہ بیان صرف جزوی طور پر درست ہے۔ بوہر ماڈل میں یہ مشابہت ہے — مرکزہ سورج کی طرح اور الیکٹران سیاروں کی طرح۔ مگر کوانٹم نظریے میں الیکٹران مقررہ مداروں میں نہیں بلکہ احتمالی بادلوں میں ہوتے ہیں؛ یہ صرف ایک مفید مشابہت ہے، حقیقی تصویر نہیں۔
