  2. 4. ➡️ Coordinate Covalent Bond —
SOURCE NOTE

This chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 9 Chemistry. No official Class 9 Chemistry book was on disk for this build, so no book page numbers are claimed. The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.

1. 🤝 Why do Atoms Form Bonds?
🏷 Tags: bonding, octet rule, duplet rule, noble gas configuration
ENGLISH

Atoms form bonds to stabilise themselves by gaining a noble-gas electronic configuration, following the duplet rule (2 electrons, like helium) and the octet rule (8 electrons in the outer shell). The force of attraction that keeps atoms together is a chemical bond.

Metals are electropositive: they lose their outer electrons easily and form positive ions (cations), e.g. Na → Na+. Non-metals are electronegative: they gain electrons easily and form negative ions (anions), e.g. Cl → Cl−.

Predicting behaviour: an element's position and outer-shell electrons tell us whether it will lose, gain or share electrons — and therefore which bond it will form.

Octet rule — 8 electrons in the outer shellAtom8 outer electrons = stable, noble-gas configuration
4. ➡️ Coordinate Covalent Bond
🏷 Tags: coordinate bond, dative bond, lone pair, ammonium
ENGLISH

A coordinate (dative) covalent bond forms when the shared electron pair is provided by only one of the two atoms. Once formed, it is just as strong as an ordinary covalent bond.

Examples: in the ammonium ion (NH4+), nitrogen donates its lone pair to H+. In the hydronium ion (H3O+), oxygen donates a lone pair to H+. That is why NH4Cl contains both covalent bonds (inside NH4+) and an ionic bond (between NH4+ and Cl−).

AlCl3 vapour exists as the dimer Al2Cl6: two AlCl3 units are held together by coordinate bonds, as a chlorine lone pair on one unit donates to the aluminium of the other.

Coordinate bond — one atom donates both electronsNH₃ + H⁺→[NH₄]⁺Nitrogen donates its lone pair to H⁺ — arrow shows the donated pair
