A molecular formula shows the actual number and type of atoms in one molecule, e.g. C6H12O6. An empirical formula shows the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms, e.g. CH2O for glucose. All ionic compounds and some covalent compounds are written with empirical formulas.
Binary ionic compounds are made from a metal cation and a non-metal anion. Balance the charges to zero: Ca2+ with P3− gives Ca3P2 (calcium phosphide); Ba2+ with N3− gives Ba3N2 (barium nitride).
To get a molecular formula from an empirical formula: molecular formula = n × empirical formula, where n = molar mass ÷ empirical formula mass.
A mole is the amount of substance containing Avogadro's number of particles: 6.022 × 1023. The mass of one mole is the molar mass (g/mol). Key relation: amount (mol) = mass ÷ molar mass; also number of particles = moles × 6.022 × 1023.
Examples: 25 g H2SO4 (M = 98) = 25 ÷ 98 = 0.255 mol. 6 g diamond (carbon, M = 12) = 0.5 mol = 0.5 × 6.022 × 1023 = 3.01 × 1023 atoms. 1 g H2O = (1 ÷ 18) mol × 3 atoms × NA ≈ 1.002 × 1023 atoms.
Mole vs Avogadro's number: the mole is a unit of amount (like a dozen); Avogadro's number is the count in one mole. Its immense importance: it links the invisible atomic world to masses we can weigh.
A chemical equation must be balanced (same atoms each side — law of conservation of mass: matter is neither created nor destroyed) and show correct formulas and state symbols: (s) solid, (l) liquid, (g) gas, (aq) aqueous.
Example: CH4(g) + 2O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2H2O(g). Copper with sulphuric acid: Cu + 2H2SO4 → CuSO4 + SO2 + 2H2O.
Before writing an equation, you must know: the correct formulas of reactants and products, the state of each substance, and that atoms balance. An equation also tells the mole ratio between reactants and products.
Stoichiometry calculates the amounts of reactants and products from a balanced equation. The stoichiometric coefficients give the mole ratio, and the mole ratio gives the mass ratio. Method: (1) balance the equation, (2) convert known mass to moles, (3) use the mole ratio, (4) convert back to mass.
Worked examples: 10 g CH4 (16 g/mol = 0.625 mol) with excess O2 gives 0.625 mol CO2 = 0.625 × 44 = 27.5 g CO2. For 3C + O2 + H2O → H2 + 3CO, making 10 mol CO needs 10 mol coal (C) (3:3 ratio). For 2H2S + SO2 → 2H2O + 3S, 10 mol S needs 10 ÷ 3 mol SO2 = 3.33 mol × 64 = 213.3 g SO2.
Percentage composition: % of element = (mass of element ÷ total mass) × 100. For a compound of 8.657 g giving 5.217 g C, 0.962 g H, 2.478 g O: C = 60.3%, H = 11.1%, O = 28.6%.
Industry uses stoichiometry to work out exactly how much raw material is needed for a desired amount of product — no waste, no shortage. Example: urea fertiliser, 2NH3 + CO2 → CO(NH2)2 + H2O. To make 1 kg (1000 g) urea (M = 60): 1000 ÷ 60 = 16.67 mol urea, needing 2 × 16.67 = 33.33 mol NH3 = 33.33 × 17 = 566.7 g ammonia.
Purity matters: 50 cm3 of 0.5 M HCl contains 0.025 mol HCl. Neutralising needs 0.0125 mol CaCO3 = 1.25 g pure; with 95% pure CaCO3, mass needed = 1.25 ÷ 0.95 = 1.32 g.
Everyday counting: 8 glasses of water × 400 cm3 = 3200 cm3 ≈ 3200 g ≈ 3200 ÷ 18 = 177.8 mol of water per adult per day.
Not every formula means a discrete molecule. Sand is SiO2, but it does not exist as separate SiO2 molecules like H2O. It is a giant covalent network: each Si is bonded to 4 O atoms, each O is shared between 2 Si atoms — so the overall ratio is Si:O = 1:2.
The formula SiO2 is therefore the simplest ratio in the network (like an empirical formula), determined from the structure, not from a single molecule. The same logic applies to ionic compounds and diamond (C).
Reversible reactions: product masses are calculated from the amount that actually reacts (the equilibrium amount), using the balanced equation's mole ratio — not from the starting amounts alone, since a reversible reaction does not go to completion.

The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.
1. How many atoms are present in one gram of H2O?
Answer: (a) 1.002 × 1023 atoms — 1 g H2O = 1/18 mol of molecules = 0.334 × 1023 molecules; × 3 atoms per molecule ≈ 1.002 × 1023 atoms.

3. How many atomic mass units (amu) are there in one gram?
Answer: (c) 6.022 × 1023 amu — 1 amu = 1/12 of a carbon-12 atom, and one gram contains Avogadro's number of amu.
4. Structural formula of 2-hexene is CH3–CH=CH–(CH2)2–CH3. What will be its empirical formula?
Answer: (d) CH2 — molecular formula is C6H12, simplest ratio 1:2.
5. How many moles are there in 25 g of H2SO4?

6. A necklace has 6 g of diamonds in it. What are the number of carbon atoms in it?
Answer: (d) 3.01 × 1023 — 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 mol × 6.022 × 1023 = 3.01 × 1023.
7. What is the mass of Al in 204 g of aluminium oxide, Al2O3?
Answer: (d) 108 g — 204 ÷ 102 = 2 mol Al2O3 → 4 mol Al × 27 = 108 g.
8. Which one of the following compounds will have the highest percentage of the mass of nitrogen?
Answer: (b) N2H4 — N mass %: urea 28/60 = 46.7%, hydrazine 28/32 = 87.5%, ammonia 14/17 = 82.4%, NH4OH 14/35 = 40%.
9. When one mole of each of the following compounds is reacted with oxygen, which will produce the maximum amount of CO2?
Answer: (c) Ethane — one mole of ethane gives 2 mol CO2; carbon, diamond and methane each give only 1 mol.
10. What mass of 95% CaCO3 will be required to neutralize 50 cm3 of 0.5 M HCl solution?
Answer: (c) 1.32 g — HCl moles = 0.05 × 0.5 = 0.025; CaCO3 needed = 0.0125 mol = 1.25 g pure; at 95% purity: 1.25 ÷ 0.95 = 1.32 g.
1. Write down the chemical formula of barium nitride.
Answer: Ba3N2 — Ba2+ and N3− balance as 3 × (+2) + 2 × (−3) = 0.
2. Find out the molecular formula of a compound whose empirical formula is CH2O and its molar mass is 180.
Answer: Empirical mass = 12 + 2 + 16 = 30. n = 180 ÷ 30 = 6. Molecular formula = 6 × CH2O = C6H12O6.
3. How many molecules are present in 1.5 g H2O?
Answer: Moles = 1.5 ÷ 18 = 0.0833 mol. Molecules = 0.0833 × 6.022 × 1023 ≈ 5.02 × 1022 molecules.
4. What is the difference between a mole and Avogadro's number?
Answer: A mole is a unit of amount of substance; Avogadro's number (6.022 × 1023) is the number of particles in one mole. One is the unit, the other is the count it stands for.
5. Write down the chemical equation of the following reaction: Copper + Sulphuric acid → Copper sulphate + Sulphur dioxide + Water.
Answer: Cu + 2H2SO4 → CuSO4 + SO2 + 2H2O. جواب: Cu + 2H2SO4 → CuSO4 + SO2 + 2H2O۔
1. Different compounds will never have the same molecular formula but they can have the same empirical formula. Explain.
Answer: A molecular formula gives the actual atoms in one molecule, so two compounds of different composition cannot share it. An empirical formula gives only the simplest ratio, which many different compounds share: e.g. acetylene C2H2 and benzene C6H6 both reduce to CH; formaldehyde CH2O and glucose C6H12O6 both reduce to CH2O.
2. Write down the chemical formulas of the following compounds: Calcium phosphate, Aluminium nitride, Sodium acetate, Ammonium carbonate and Bismuth sulphate.
Answer: Calcium phosphate = Ca3(PO4)2; Aluminium nitride = AlN; Sodium acetate = CH3COONa; Ammonium carbonate = (NH4)2CO3; Bismuth sulphate = Bi2(SO4)3.
3. Why does Avogadro's number have an immense importance in chemistry?
Answer: Atoms and molecules are too small to count one by one. Avogadro's number lets chemists count particles by weighing: one mole (6.022 × 1023 particles) has a weighable mass (the molar mass), so balanced equations can be turned into grams in the laboratory and in industry.
4. When 8.657 g of a compound were converted into elements, it gave 5.217 g of carbon, 0.962 g of hydrogen and 2.478 g of oxygen. Calculate the percentage of each element present in this compound.
Answer: C = 5.217 ÷ 8.657 × 100 = 60.3%; H = 0.962 ÷ 8.657 × 100 = 11.1%; O = 2.478 ÷ 8.657 × 100 = 28.6%. (Sum = 100%.) جواب: C = 60.3%، H = 11.1%، O = 28.6%۔
5. How can you calculate the masses of the products formed in a reversible reaction?
Answer: Use the balanced equation's mole ratio, but apply it to the amount that actually reacts — the equilibrium amount — not the starting amount. If the conversion or equilibrium position is known, convert the reacted moles of reactant to moles of product, then to mass. Assuming 100% conversion would overstate the products.
1. Which conditions must be fulfilled before writing a chemical equation for a reaction?
Answer: (1) The correct chemical formulas of all reactants and products must be known. (2) The equation must be balanced — equal numbers of each atom on both sides (conservation of mass). (3) State symbols (s, l, g, aq) should be shown, and reaction conditions noted where needed.
2. Explain the concepts of Avogadro's number and mole.
Answer: Avogadro's number, 6.022 × 1023, is the number of particles in one mole of any substance. A mole is the amount of substance containing that many particles; its mass in grams equals the substance's relative atomic/molecular/formula mass (molar mass). So moles link the particle world to the weighing world: amount = mass ÷ molar mass.
3. How many grams of CO2 will be produced when we react 10 g of CH4 with excess of O2 according to: CH4(g) + 2O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2H2O(g)?
Answer: Moles CH4 = 10 ÷ 16 = 0.625 mol. Mole ratio CH4:CO2 = 1:1, so CO2 = 0.625 mol. Mass = 0.625 × 44 = 27.5 g.
4. How many moles of coal are needed to produce 10 moles of CO according to: 3C(s) + O2(g) + H2O(l) → H2(g) + 3CO(g)?
Answer: Ratio C:CO = 3:3 = 1:1, so 10 mol CO needs 10 mol of coal (carbon).
5. How much SO2 is needed in grams to produce 10 moles of sulphur? 2H2S(g) + SO2(g) → 2H2O(l) + 3S(s).
Answer: Ratio SO2:S = 1:3, so SO2 = 10 ÷ 3 = 3.333 mol. Mass = 3.333 × 64 = 213.3 g.
6. How much ammonia is needed in grams to produce 1 kg of urea fertilizer? 2NH3(aq) + CO2(aq) → CO(NH2)2(aq) + H2O(l).
Answer: Moles urea = 1000 ÷ 60 = 16.67 mol. Ratio NH3:urea = 2:1, so NH3 = 33.33 mol. Mass = 33.33 × 17 = 566.7 g.
7. Calculate the number of atoms in the following: (a) 3 g of H2 (b) 3.4 moles of N2 (c) 10 g of C6H12O6.
Answer: (a) 3 g H2 = 1.5 mol molecules = 3 mol atoms = 3 × 6.022 × 1023 = 1.81 × 1024 atoms. (b) 3.4 mol N2 = 6.8 mol atoms = 4.09 × 1024 atoms. (c) 10 g C6H12O6 = 10 ÷ 180 = 0.0556 mol molecules; each molecule has 24 atoms → 1.333 mol atoms = 8.03 × 1023 atoms.
1. It is generally believed that drinking eight glasses of water every day is required to keep oneself hydrated especially in the summer. If a glass occupies 400 cm3 of water on the average, how many moles of water are needed for a single adult?
Answer: Volume = 8 × 400 = 3200 cm3. Mass ≈ 3200 g (density of water ≈ 1 g/cm3). Moles = 3200 ÷ 18 = 177.8 mol of water per day.
2. The chemical formula for sand is SiO2 but the sand does not exist in the form of discrete molecules like H2O. How has its formula been determined keeping in view its structure?
Answer: From its giant covalent structure: X-ray analysis shows each silicon atom bonded to four oxygen atoms, and each oxygen atom shared between two silicon atoms. Counting the sharing gives an overall Si:O ratio of 1:2, so the formula is written as SiO2 — the ratio in the network, not a separate molecule.
Stoichiometry — A molecular formula shows the actual number and type of atoms in one molecule, e.g. A mole is the amount of substance containing Avogadro's number of particles: 6.022 × 1023. A chemical equation must be balanced (same atoms each side — law of conservation of mass: matter is neither created nor destroyed) and show correct formulas and state symbols: (s) solid, (l) liquid, (g) gas, (aq) aqueous.Example: CH4(g) + 2O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2H2O(g). Stoichiometry calculates the amounts of reactants and products from a balanced equation. Industry uses stoichiometry to work out exactly how much raw material is needed for a desired amount of product — no waste, no shortage. Not every formula means a discrete molecule.
