  1. 1. 🔄 Reversible and Irreversible Changes —
SOURCE NOTE

This chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 9 Chemistry. No official Class 9 Chemistry book was on disk for this build, so no book page numbers are claimed. The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.

ENGLISH

An irreversible reaction goes to completion in the forward direction only. Example: NaCl + AgNO3 → AgCl↓ + NaNO3 — with stoichiometric amounts, no reactant is left at the end.

A reversible reaction moves in both directions under the same conditions: reactants give products, and products react back to reactants. It is shown by the symbol ⇌ (two half-arrowheads). Example: N2 + 3H2 ⇌ 2NH3 (Haber process, Fe catalyst, 400 °C, 200 atm).

Why the difference? A reaction is reversible when the forward and backward activation energies are comparable, so both directions can happen. Combustion is generally irreversible because its products (CO2, H2O) escape as gases and the reverse reaction has an enormous barrier.

Irreversible vs reversibleIrreversible: A + B → C + D (only forward)Reversible: A + B ⇌ C + D (both ways)⇌ means the reaction can go forward and backward
