SOURCE NOTE

This chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 9 Chemistry. No official Class 9 Chemistry book was on disk for this build, so no book page numbers are claimed. The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.

1. 🍋 What are Acids and Bases?
🏷 Tags: acids, bases, litmus, hydroxonium, pH
ENGLISH

Acids are compounds with a sour taste that turn blue litmus red and give hydroxonium ions (H3O+ / H+) when dissolved in water. Familiar acids: citric acid (citrus), tartaric acid (tamarind, grapes), ascorbic acid (vitamin C), lactic acid (sour milk), oxalic acid (tomato).

Bases (alkalis) are bitter in taste, feel slippery, and turn red litmus blue; they form hydroxide ions (OH−) in water. Formic acid (from ants) is not used as food.

Acids have been known for centuries from sour foods — curd, tamarind, lemon and lime all taste sour because they contain acids.

Acid or base? Litmus tells youACIDblue litmus → red • sourBASE / ALKALIred litmus → blue • slipperyAcids give H⁺ in water • Bases give OH⁻ in water
2. 🔁 Arrhenius and Brønsted–Lowry Concepts
🏷 Tags: Arrhenius, Brønsted-Lowry, proton, acid, base
ENGLISH

Arrhenius concept: an acid gives H+ ions in water; a base gives OH− ions in water. Arrhenius acids among HF, NH3, H2SO4, SO2, H2S, H2O are HF, H2SO4 and H2S (NH3 is a base; SO2 is an acidic oxide, not itself an acid; water is amphoteric).

Brønsted–Lowry concept (broader): an acid is a proton donor, a base is a proton acceptor — it works even without water. Example: HSO4− is a Brønsted–Lowry acid because it donates a proton (HSO4− → SO42− + H+).

Conjugate pairs: when an acid donates a proton it becomes its conjugate base (differs by one H+). In CH3COOH + H2O ⇌ CH3COO− + H3O+, CH3COO− is the conjugate base of CH3COOH. Strong acids/bases dissociate completely in water (HCl, H2SO4, HNO3); weak ones dissociate partially (ethanoic acid). Strong ≠ concentrated: strong means fully dissociated, concentrated means a large amount per volume.

3. 🧱 Bases and Alkalis
🏷 Tags: bases, alkalis, metal oxides, hydroxides
ENGLISH

Bases are oxides or hydroxides of metals (e.g. MgO, NaOH, Ca(OH)2). Alkalis are the water-soluble bases (e.g. NaOH, KOH, Ca(OH)2 partly). So every alkali is a base, but not every base is an alkali.

Ca(OH)2 releases 2 hydroxide ions per formula unit in water: Ca(OH)2 → Ca2+ + 2OH−.

Na2CO3 behaves like a base in water because the carbonate ion hydrolyses: CO32− + H2O ⇌ HCO3− + OH− — it produces hydroxide ions. NaHCO3 is amphoteric but its solution is basic: HCO3− mainly accepts a proton (acting as a base), giving an alkaline solution.

Bases vs alkalis — all alkalis are basesBASESALKALISAlkalis = water-soluble bases (NaOH, KOH)
4. ⚗️ Reactions of Acids and Bases
🏷 Tags: acid reactions, metal, carbonate, salt, hydrogen
ENGLISH

Acid + metal → salt + hydrogen gas. The metal dissolves, a salt forms, and H2 is evolved — all three characteristics are true. Example: calcium with dilute H2SO4 gives calcium sulphate + hydrogen: Ca + H2SO4 → CaSO4 + H2.

Acid + base → salt + water (neutralisation). Example: H3PO4 + 3KOH → K3PO4 + 3H2O — three KOH molecules neutralise one H3PO4. Acid + metal carbonate → salt + carbon dioxide + water: HCl + BaCO3 gives barium chloride (BaCl2) + CO2 + H2O.

Base + non-metallic oxide → salt + water. This shows non-metallic oxides are acidic in nature (e.g. SO2 + water → H2SO3, sulphurous acid). Alkali + ammonium salt → salt + water + ammonia gas — ammonia turns red litmus blue, which identifies this reaction.

Acid reactions at a glanceAcid + metal → salt + H₂Acid + base → salt + H₂OAcid + carbonate → salt + CO₂ + H₂OBaking: CO₂ from carbonate + acid raises bread and makes it soft
5. 🧼 Neutralisation, Salts and Soap
🏷 Tags: neutralisation, salt, soap, saponification
ENGLISH

Neutralisation is acid + base → salt + water. The salt formed depends on the acid and base: HCl + BaCO3 gives barium chloride; H2SO4 with MgO gives magnesium sulphate + water; with MgCO3 it gives magnesium sulphate + CO2 + water; with NH4Cl or NH4NO3 it displaces the volatile acid (HCl or HNO3).

Soap is chemically a sodium (or potassium) salt of a fatty acid — e.g. sodium stearate (from stearic acid). That is why stearic acid, not tartaric, citric or oxalic acid, is the acid used in soap preparation.

Water is both an acid and a base (amphoteric): in H2O ⇌ H+ + OH−, one water molecule donates a proton (acting as an acid) and another accepts it (acting as a base). Stomach HCl is dilute and the stomach wall is protected by mucus — that is why it digests food safely, while laboratory HCl is corrosive and not edible.

Soap = sodium salt of a fatty acidStearic acid+ NaOH →Sodium stearate+ H₂O — a neutralisation reactionThe soap molecule cleans because one end loves water, the other loves grease

Section 2: Questions for Short Answers

1. Choose Arrhenius acids among the following compounds: HF, NH3, H2SO4, SO2, H2S, H2O.

Answer / جواب

Answer: HF, H2SO4, H2S — they give H+ in water. NH3 is a base, SO2 is an acidic oxide (it forms an acid with water but is not itself an Arrhenius acid), and H2O is amphoteric.

2. How does calcium metal react with dilute H2SO4?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Ca + H2SO4 → CaSO4 + H2 — calcium sulphate and hydrogen gas are formed. (In practice the sparingly soluble CaSO4 can coat the metal and slow the reaction.)

3. Which salt is formed when HCl reacts with BaCO3?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Barium chloride, BaCl2 (with CO2 and water): BaCO3 + 2HCl → BaCl2 + CO2 + H2O.

4. How will you justify that HSO4− is a Brønsted–Lowry acid?

Answer / جواب

Answer: A Brønsted–Lowry acid donates a proton, and HSO4− does exactly that: HSO4− → SO42− + H+.

5. Why is HCl not edible although it is present in the stomach and responsible for digestion of food?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Stomach HCl is very dilute (about 0.1 M) and the stomach wall is protected by a mucus layer; it works in tiny, controlled amounts. Laboratory/concentrated HCl is far stronger, corrosive to mouth, throat and stomach tissue, and unsafe to drink. Edible acids (citric, tartaric, ascorbic) are weak acids used in small food amounts.

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions

1. What chemical name will you give to soap as a compound?

Answer / جواب

Answer: A sodium (or potassium) salt of a long-chain fatty acid — commonly sodium stearate (sodium octadecanoate), made from stearic acid.

2. In the presence of a drop of an acid, water is known to ionize as follows: H2O ⇌ H+ + OH−. In your opinion, which name will be suitable for water: an acid, a base or both?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Both — water is amphoteric. One water molecule donates a proton (acting as an acid) and another accepts a proton (acting as a base); the pair H2O/H3O+ and H2O/OH− shows both roles.

3. Why does Na2CO3 behave like a base in water?

Answer / جواب

Answer: The carbonate ion hydrolyses in water: CO32− + H2O ⇌ HCO3− + OH−. The hydroxide ions produced make the solution alkaline, so sodium carbonate behaves like a base.

4. Is NaHCO3 a base or an acid? Justify your answer.

Answer / جواب

Answer: NaHCO3 is amphoteric, but its solution behaves as a base. HCO3− can donate a proton (acting as an acid, → CO32−) or accept a proton (acting as a base, → H2CO3); in water the base behaviour dominates, so the solution is alkaline (pH > 7).

5. What is the difference between a strong acid and a concentrated acid?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Strong describes how completely an acid dissociates in water (strong = fully dissociated, e.g. HCl). Concentrated describes how much acid is present per volume of solution. A concentrated acid can be weak (e.g. concentrated ethanoic acid), and a strong acid can be dilute (e.g. dilute HCl).

Section 4: Descriptive Questions

1. Explain Arrhenius concept of acids and bases.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Arrhenius (water-based) concept: an acid is a substance that gives hydrogen ions (H+/H3O+) when dissolved in water (e.g. HCl → H+ + Cl−); a base gives hydroxide ions (OH−) in water (e.g. NaOH → Na+ + OH−). Neutralisation is H+ + OH− → H2O. Its limitation: it only works in water.

2. Compare Arrhenius and Brønsted–Lowry concepts of acids and bases.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Arrhenius: acid = H+ producer in water; base = OH− producer in water — water-only. Brønsted–Lowry: acid = proton donor; base = proton acceptor — works in any solvent and even without solvent (e.g. NH3 is a base because it accepts a proton, though it has no OH−; NH4+ is an acid). Brønsted–Lowry also explains conjugate acid–base pairs and amphoteric substances like water and HCO3−.

3. How does sulphuric acid react with the following compounds? NH4Cl, NH4NO3, MgO, MgCO3.

Answer / جواب

Answer: With NH4Cl: H2SO4 + NH4Cl → NH4HSO4 + HCl↑ (volatile acid displaced). With NH4NO3: H2SO4 + NH4NO3 → NH4HSO4 + HNO3↑. With MgO (base): H2SO4 + MgO → MgSO4 + H2O. With MgCO3 (carbonate): H2SO4 + MgCO3 → MgSO4 + CO2 + H2O.

4. What happens when a base reacts with a non-metallic oxide? What do you infer about the nature of non-metallic oxide?

Answer / جواب

Answer: A base + non-metallic oxide gives a salt + water (e.g. 2NaOH + CO2 → Na2CO3 + H2O; Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O). Since non-metallic oxides behave like acids toward bases, we infer they are acidic oxides.

5. State the reason for showing acidic character by both dry HCl gas and HCl solution in water.

Answer / جواب

Answer: HCl is a proton donor (Brønsted–Lowry acid) in both forms. In water it ionises completely to H3O+ + Cl−, giving all classic acidic properties (sour, litmus, reactions). Dry HCl gas donates its proton to bases directly — e.g. with ammonia gas it gives white fumes of NH4Cl — showing acidic character without water. (Note: dry HCl gas alone does not change dry litmus paper; moisture is needed for the litmus test, because the ions form in water.)

6. Differentiate between an acid and its conjugate base.

Answer / جواب

Answer: An acid donates a proton; its conjugate base is the species left after that donation — they differ by exactly one H+ (and one unit of charge). Example: acid CH3COOH → conjugate base CH3COO−; acid H3O+ → conjugate base H2O; acid NH4+ → conjugate base NH3. A strong acid has a weak conjugate base, and vice versa.

Section 5: Investigative Questions

1. Acids play significant roles within human body. Comment on this statement.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Stomach hydrochloric acid digests proteins and kills germs in food. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, enzymes and hormones. Fatty acids store energy and build cell membranes. Lactic acid is produced in muscles during vigorous exercise. Carbonic acid (from CO2 + water) buffers blood pH. Nucleic acids (DNA, RNA) store and transmit genetic information. Without acids, digestion, energy and heredity would all fail.

2. What is observed when CO2 is passed through lime water (i) for a short duration (ii) for a long duration?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (i) Short duration: limewater turns milky — insoluble calcium carbonate forms: Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3↓ (white) + H2O. (ii) Long duration: the milkiness disappears and the solution becomes clear again — excess CO2 converts CaCO3 to soluble calcium hydrogencarbonate: CaCO3 + CO2 + H2O → Ca(HCO3)2 (soluble).
