SOURCE NOTE

This chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 9 Chemistry. No official Class 9 Chemistry book was on disk for this build, so no book page numbers are claimed. The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.

1. 📅 The Modern Periodic Table
🏷 Tags: periodic table, atomic number, modern table
ENGLISH

The modern periodic table arranges elements in ascending order of atomic number (proton number). That is why atomic number — not atomic mass — was chosen: properties repeat periodically with atomic number, while mass order has anomalies (and isotopes share one place).

Horizontal rows are periods (7 periods); vertical columns are groups (18 groups). Each period starts with an alkali metal and ends at a noble gas, and a period represents the completion of a shell. Elements are divided into s, p, d and f blocks: s- and p-block elements are called normal (main-group) elements; d- and f-block elements are transition elements.

"Periodic" means properties repeat at regular intervals: when elements are listed by atomic number, similar properties recur after fixed gaps — that is why the table works.

2. 👥 Groups and Electronic Configuration
🏷 Tags: groups, electronic configuration, outer shell
ENGLISH

All elements in a group show similar chemical properties because they have the same number of electrons in their outermost shell. That is why a group has the same outer-electron count from top to bottom — each new element in the group just adds a new inner shell.

The group number also predicts the charge of ions formed: Group 1 elements lose 1 electron → +1 ions; Group 2 → +2; Group 16 elements gain 2 electrons → −2 ions; Group 17 → −1 ions. Transition metals have outer shells of the form (n−1)dxns2 — their outermost shell involves d and s subshells, which is why they show variable valency.

To place an element: the number of shells = its period; the number of outer-shell electrons = its group (for main-group elements); the subshell being filled = its block. Example: silicon (2, 8, 4) is in period 3, group 14 — the element used in solar cells.

3. 📏 Periods and Atomic Size
🏷 Tags: periods, atomic size, trends
ENGLISH

Period sizes: period 1 has 2 elements; periods 2 and 3 have 8 each; periods 4 and 5 have 18 each; period 6 has 32. Periods 2 and 3 have equal numbers because both fill only s and p subshells (2 + 6 = 8) — the d subshell starts filling only in period 4, which is why later periods hold more elements.

Atomic radius is found as half the distance between the nuclei of two bonded atoms of the same element (measured by X-ray methods). Across a period, atomic radius decreases left to right: nuclear charge increases while electrons are added to the same shell, pulling the shell closer. Down a group it increases: each step adds a new shell.

The size of a period (its length in the table) grows down the table because higher periods fill more subshells (d, then f). In period 3, the largest radius is sodium (first element) and the smallest is chlorine (last non-noble element).

Atomic radius across period 3 — shrinkingNaMgAlSiPClLeft → right: more nuclear charge, same shell → smaller atoms
4. ⚡ Ionization Energy, Electron Affinity, Electronegativity
🏷 Tags: ionization energy, electron affinity, electronegativity
ENGLISH

Ionization energy (IE) is the energy needed to remove the most loosely held electron from an isolated gaseous atom. It increases across a period (stronger nuclear hold) and decreases down a group (outer electron farther, more shielded). Magnesium's first IE is less than its second: after one electron is removed, Mg+ has a stable full shell and the remaining electrons feel a higher effective nuclear charge, so the second electron is harder to remove.

Electron affinity (EA) is the energy released when a gaseous atom gains an electron; electronegativity (EN) is an atom's power to attract shared electrons in a bond. Both increase across a period and decrease down a group. The most electronegative elements sit in groups 16–17 (old groups VI–VII), near a complete outer shell — fluorine has the highest electronegativity of all, and the least IE / least EA elements belong to group 1.

Boron (radius 88 pm) vs aluminium (125 pm): aluminium's outer electron is farther from the nucleus and more shielded, so aluminium loses electrons more easily (lower IE).

Trends across a period (left → right)Atomic radius ↓Ionization energy ↑Electron affinity ↑ • Electronegativity ↑Down a group, all three trends reverse
6. 👨‍👩‍👧 Families, Anomalies and Predictions
🏷 Tags: families, alkali metals, halogens, noble gases, anomalies
ENGLISH

Families: alkali metals (group 1, soft, reactive), alkaline earth metals (group 2), halogens (group 17, reactive non-metals), noble gases (group 18, inert, full shells), transition metals (d-block, coloured compounds, variable valency), lanthanides and actinides (f-block, placed below the table).

Predicting an unknown element: from its physical/chemical properties and electronic configuration you can deduce its group (outer electrons), period (shells), block, and likely properties — and a brand-new element is placed by its atomic number and outer-electron arrangement. A new element's position is never guessed: its proton number fixes its place.

Anomalies: lithium and beryllium behave differently from the rest of their groups because they are very small with high charge density — their high polarising power gives their compounds partial covalent character, and they resemble the diagonal neighbours (Li like Mg, Be like Al). Oxygen cannot form an O3− ion like nitrogen forms N3−: oxygen already has 6 outer electrons, and adding 3 would exceed the octet (8) limit of its shell, while nitrogen (5 outer) reaches exactly 8.

The periodic table predicts — even for new elementsAtomic number → positionOuter electrons → group → propertiesShells → period • Subshell → blockThat is why the table is called a remarkable achievement of chemists
Section 2: Questions for Short Answers

1. Why was atomic number chosen to arrange the elements in the periodic table?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Because properties repeat periodically with atomic number (proton number), while arranging by atomic mass creates anomalies and splits isotopes; atomic number also fixes an element's electronic configuration and identity.

2. What is the significance of the word periodic?

Answer / جواب

Answer: "Periodic" means recurring at regular intervals: when elements are ordered by atomic number, elements with similar properties appear again after fixed gaps (periods), so the pattern repeats.

3. Why does the size of a period increase as we move down the periodic table?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Higher periods fill more subshells: period 1 fills only s (2 elements); periods 2–3 fill s + p (8); periods 4–5 add d (18); period 6 adds f (32). More subshells mean more elements per period.

4. In a group, the elements have the same number of electrons in the outermost shell. Why is it so?

Answer / جواب

Answer: A group is defined by the outer-shell electron count: going down a group, each new element adds a complete inner shell while the outer shell keeps the same number of electrons, so the group's chemistry repeats.

5. Do you expect calcium to be more reactive than sodium? Give the reason of your answer.

Answer / جواب

Answer: No — sodium is more reactive. Sodium (group 1) needs to lose only one outer electron to reach a stable octet, and its ionization energy is lower; calcium (group 2) must lose two electrons, so it reacts less vigorously.

6. Which element has the maximum atomic radius and which element has the minimum atomic radius in third period?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Maximum: sodium (Na), the first element of the period. Minimum: chlorine (Cl), the last element before the noble gas argon (argon's filled shell makes its measured radius slightly larger in the usual comparison).

7. Why are the most electronegative elements present in sixth and seventh groups?

Answer / جواب

Answer: The book's "sixth and seventh groups" are modern groups 16 and 17. Their atoms are one or two electrons short of a complete octet, with high effective nuclear charge, so they attract shared electrons most strongly — fluorine (group 17) most of all.

8. The first ionization energy value of magnesium is less than the second one. Give reason.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Removing the first electron from Mg (2, 8, 2) leaves Mg+ (2, 8), a stable full shell. Removing a second electron must break that stable shell against a higher effective nuclear charge, so it needs much more energy.

9. Is it possible for two metals or two non-metals to form an ionic bond?

Answer / جواب

Answer: No. An ionic bond needs electron transfer from a metal (donor) to a non-metal (acceptor). Two metals share a sea of electrons (metallic bond); two non-metals share electron pairs (covalent bond).

10. Which element has the least value of ionization energy and which element has the highest value of electronegativity?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Least ionization energy: the bottom group-1 metals, caesium (and francium, which is rare and radioactive) — they lose their outer electron most easily. Highest electronegativity: fluorine.

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions

1. Suppose a new element is discovered. Where would you like to accommodate this element in the periodic table?

Answer / جواب

Answer: By its atomic number (proton number) in sequence, and by its electronic configuration: the number of shells gives its period, the outer-shell electrons give its group, and the subshell being filled gives its block. Its position is fixed by measurement, not by guesswork.

2. What is the first element of the periodic table? Will it lose an electron or gain it?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Hydrogen (atomic number 1). It can do both: lose its one electron to form H+ (like a metal, reaching an empty shell) or gain one electron to form H− (completing its duplet, like a halogen) — which is why hydrogen sits in a special position.

3. Atomic radii of boron and aluminium are 88 pm and 125 pm respectively. Which element is expected to lose electron or electrons easily?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Aluminium — its larger radius means its outer electrons are farther from the nucleus and more shielded by inner shells, so they are held less tightly and lost more easily (lower ionization energy) than boron's.

4. How would you find the atomic radius of an atom?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Measure the distance between the nuclei of two bonded atoms of the same element (e.g. by X-ray diffraction) and halve it — for a covalent molecule, half the bond length; for a metal, half the distance between neighbouring atoms in the lattice.

5. Why is it not possible for oxygen atom to accept three electrons to form O3− ion like nitrogen which can accept electrons to form N3−?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Nitrogen has 5 outer electrons, so gaining 3 completes its octet (8) — allowed. Oxygen already has 6 outer electrons; gaining 3 would give 9 electrons in its second shell, exceeding the octet capacity of 8, which the shell cannot hold. Oxygen therefore stops at O2− (8 electrons).

Section 4: Descriptive Questions

1. Which information is needed to locate the elements in the periodic table if you do not know its atomic number? Is atomic mass helpful for this purpose?

Answer / جواب

Answer: The element's electronic configuration: shells → period, outer electrons → group, subshell → block; plus its chemical/physical properties to confirm. Atomic mass is not reliable for locating elements: isotopes of one element share a place, and mass order has inversions (e.g. argon before potassium, cobalt before nickel) that atomic number resolves.

2. How many blocks of elements are present in the periodic table? Are these blocks helpful in studying the properties of elements?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Four blocks: s, p, d and f, named after the subshell being filled. Yes, they are very helpful: elements in the same block have similar outer configurations and therefore similar chemistry — e.g. s-block = reactive metals, p-block = mostly non-metals and metalloids, d-block = transition metals with variable valency and coloured compounds, f-block = lanthanides/actinides.

3. Explain the variation in the following properties in the periods giving reasons: (a) Atomic radius (b) Ionization energy.

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) Atomic radius decreases left to right across a period: protons are added to the nucleus while electrons enter the same shell, so the growing nuclear charge pulls the shell closer. (b) Ionization energy increases left to right: the same stronger nuclear hold on the same shell makes it harder to remove an electron; additionally, the atom gets closer to a stable octet, which it does not want to disturb.

4. Which physical properties of elements may lead us to know what type of bond it will form?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Metallic lustre, electrical/thermal conductivity and malleability point to a metal (metallic or ionic bonding with non-metals); brittleness, dullness and non-conductivity point to a non-metal (covalent bonding); high melting/boiling points with hardness suggest giant structures (ionic or giant covalent); low melting/boiling points suggest small covalent molecules with weak intermolecular forces.

5. Write down the names of four non-metals which exist in solid state at normal temperature.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Carbon, sulphur, phosphorus and iodine (also silicon and boron, which are metalloids, and selenium).

6. Why do second and third periods have equal number of elements while all other periods contain different number of elements?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Periods 2 and 3 both fill only the s and p subshells (2 + 6 = 8 elements each). Other periods differ because different subshell sets fill: period 1 fills only s (2); periods 4–5 add d (2 + 6 + 10 = 18); period 6 adds f (2 + 6 + 10 + 14 = 32); period 7 is still incomplete.

1. Arrangement of the elements in the form of a periodic table is a remarkable achievement of chemists. Comment on this statement citing the benefits of this table.

Answer / جواب

Answer: The table organises over 110 elements into one pattern: it predicts properties of unknown elements from their position, explains why elements in a group behave alike, guided the discovery of new elements (gaps in the table were filled as predicted), helps choose materials and reactions, and makes the whole of chemistry learnable as trends rather than isolated facts.

2. Both lithium and beryllium show behaviour different from rest of the alkali and alkaline earth metals respectively. Can you think of the possible reasons for this difference?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Lithium and beryllium are the smallest atoms of their groups, so their charge density is very high and their polarising power is large. This gives their compounds significant covalent character (unlike the ionic compounds of the heavier members), makes their salts less soluble and their carbonates/nitrates decompose differently, and creates diagonal relationships (Li resembles Mg; Be resembles Al).
