This chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 9 Chemistry. No official Class 9 Chemistry book was on disk for this build, so no book page numbers are claimed. The exercise questions and answers below are the library chapter's own; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.
Group 1 elements (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) are called alkali metals: relatively soft metals that form alkaline (basic) solutions with water. Each has one electron in its outer shell, which it loses easily to form a +1 ion — that is why they are so reactive.
Trends down the group: atomic size increases, so the outer electron is held more loosely — it becomes easier to lose and chemical reactivity increases down the group (Cs reacts more violently than Li). At the same time, interatomic attraction decreases as atoms get bigger, so the metals become softer (easier to cut: Cs cuts more easily than Li) and their melting points decrease down the group. Because atoms get bigger and heavier, density increases down the group.
Predicting properties: given data about one alkali metal, you can predict the others — e.g. potassium reacts with halogens more vigorously than sodium but less violently than rubidium, because it sits between them in the group.
Group 17 elements (F, Cl, Br, I, At) are called halogens — "salt formers". They are diatomic non-metals (F2, Cl2, Br2, I2) with seven outer electrons, needing just one more to complete the octet — hence their high reactivity, and their most reactive member is fluorine, the least reactive is iodine.
Appearance at room temperature: fluorine is a pale-yellow gas; chlorine a yellow-green gas; bromine a red-brown liquid; iodine a grey-black solid. The change from gas to liquid to solid down the group happens because molecular size grows and intermolecular forces strengthen.
Trends down the group: density increases; reactivity and oxidising power decrease (the outer shell gets farther from the nucleus, so gaining an electron becomes harder). Halogens react vigorously with alkali and alkaline-earth metals, forming salts (e.g. NaCl, CaCl2).
Displacement reactions: a more reactive halogen displaces a less reactive halogen from its salt solution, because halogens are oxidising agents — they take electrons from halide ions. Example: Cl2 + 2NaBr → 2NaCl + Br2 — chlorine is the oxidising agent (it gains electrons) and bromide (Br−) is the reducing agent (it loses electrons). A mixture of chlorine water and sodium iodide turns dark because brown iodine is liberated; bromine cannot displace chlorine or fluorine, so Br2 + NaCl or Br2 + NaF shows no reaction.
Hydrogen halides: HF, HCl, HBr, HI. The H–X bond gets weaker down the group (the halogen atom gets bigger, so the bond is longer and weaker), so thermal stability decreases down the group: HF is the most stable, HI the least — HI is unstable at room temperature and decomposes easily. That is also why HBr is thermally less stable than HCl: the H–Br bond is weaker than the H–Cl bond.
As reducing agents, halide ions act in the reverse order: I− is the strongest reducing agent (loses its electron most easily), F− the weakest.
Transition elements are the d-block metals. They are all metals, often hard, with high densities and high melting points — much harder and denser than group 1 metals. That is why they differ from "normal" elements: their d subshell is being filled, so they show variable oxidation numbers (iron is +2 and +3, copper +1 and +2) instead of one fixed valency.
They form coloured compounds: NiCl2 is green, CuSO4 blue, KMnO4 purple — while compounds of group 1/2 metals (KCl, BaCl2, AlCl3) are colourless. The colour comes from d-electron transitions in the metal ion.
They and their compounds act as catalysts in important industrial reactions: iron in the Haber process (ammonia), vanadium(V) oxide (V2O5) in the Contact process (sulphuric acid), platinum/rhodium in catalytic converters, and nickel in the hydrogenation of oils to make margarine (Ni provides a surface where H2 and oil molecules meet and add across double bonds).
Group 18 elements (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn) are called noble gases: unreactive, monatomic gases. They are unreactive because their outermost shells are complete (helium 2, the rest 8) — they neither need to gain, lose, nor share electrons, so they do not form compounds under normal conditions.
A monatomic gas (X) therefore does not burn in air, is colourless, and is unreactive — and it will not displace iodine from its compounds. Boiling points increase down the group as atoms get bigger (stronger van der Waals forces), so the lowest boiling point belongs to helium, the smallest noble gas.
Noble gases are used where inertness matters: argon fills light bulbs and welding shields, helium fills balloons (light and non-flammable) and cools superconducting magnets, neon fills advertising signs.
1. Which halogen will have the least reactivity with alkaline earth metals?
Answer: (b) Iodine — halogen reactivity decreases down the group (F > Cl > Br > I), so iodine is the least reactive.
2. Which compound do you expect to be coloured?
Answer: (d) NiCl2 — nickel is a transition metal, so its compounds are coloured (green); KCl, BaCl2 and AlCl3 are colourless.
3. In which element there exists the strongest forces of attraction between atoms?
Answer: (b) Ca — calcium has the highest melting point of the four (842 °C, vs Mg 649 °C, Sr 777 °C, Ba 727 °C), showing the strongest interatomic attraction in its lattice.
4. Elements of which group are all coloured? (a) Second group (b) Sixth group (c) Fourth group (d) Fifth group
Answer — book-question note: As printed, none of groups 2, 4, 5 or 6 consists of elements that are all coloured as elements (they are silvery metals). The family in this chapter whose elements are all coloured is the halogens, group 17: F pale yellow, Cl yellow-green, Br red-brown, I grey-black. If the question intends coloured compounds, the transition-metal groups (4, 5, 6) all form coloured compounds.
5. Which halogen acid is unstable at room temperature?
Answer: (b) HI — the H–I bond is the weakest of the hydrogen halides, so HI decomposes most easily.
6. Which oxide is the most basic oxide?
Answer: (a) Na2O — sodium is the most electropositive metal of the four, so its oxide is the most basic; CO2 is acidic, MgO is less basic than the alkali-metal oxides.
7. Which group elements are the most reactive elements?
Answer: (b) First group — the alkali metals are the most reactive metals, losing their single outer electron most readily.
8. The following solutions of a halogen and a sodium halide are mixed together. Which solution will turn dark because of a reaction?
Answer: (d) Cl2 and NaI — chlorine displaces iodine from NaI, and the liberated iodine colours the solution dark brown. In (a)–(c) no displacement is possible (bromine cannot displace Cl or F; chlorine cannot displace F).
9. X is a monoatomic gas, which statement about this is correct?
Answer: (c) X is unreactive — a monatomic gas is a noble gas with a complete outer shell: colourless, unreactive, and unable to displace anything.
10. Which property is correct for group 1 elements?
Answer: (a) Low catalytic activity — group 1 metals are not catalysts (that role belongs to transition metals). The other options are all false for alkali metals: they have low density, high electrical conductivity and low melting points.
1. Why does it become easier to cut an alkali metal when we move from top to bottom in a group 1?
Answer: Atoms get bigger down the group, so interatomic attraction weakens and metallic bonding becomes weaker — the metal becomes softer and easier to cut (Cs cuts more easily than Li).
2. Predict the reactivity of potassium towards halogens.
Answer: Potassium reacts vigorously with halogens (e.g. with chlorine to give KCl), more vigorously than sodium but less violently than rubidium, because it lies between them in group 1 and loses its outer electron more easily than sodium.
3. In the following reaction, chlorine acts as an oxidising agent. Which is the reducing agent? Cl2 + 2NaBr → 2NaCl + Br2
Answer: Bromide ion (Br−) — it loses electrons (is oxidised) to form Br2, while chlorine gains those electrons (is reduced). The species oxidised is the reducing agent.
4. Why does iodine exist in the solid state at room temperature?
Answer: Iodine molecules (I2) are large, so the van der Waals forces between them are strong enough to hold them in a solid lattice at room temperature, unlike the smaller F2 and Cl2 molecules, which are gases.
5. How does Ni catalyse the reaction involving hydrogenation of oil?
Answer: Nickel provides a surface that adsorbs H2 molecules and unsaturated oil molecules, weakens the H–H bond and the C=C double bonds, and brings them together so hydrogen adds across the double bonds, converting liquid oil into solid fat (margarine). The nickel itself is unchanged at the end.
1. Explain the role of sodium as heat transfer agent in the atomic nuclear power plant. Which property of sodium is utilized in this role?
Answer: Liquid sodium is circulated through the reactor core to carry heat away to the steam generators. The properties used are: it is a liquid over a wide temperature range (melting point 98 °C, boiling point 883 °C), it has high thermal conductivity and high heat capacity, so it transfers large amounts of heat efficiently without needing high pressure — ideal for cooling a fast reactor. (Sodium must be kept away from water and air, as it reacts violently with both.)
2. Why and how does lithium behave differently from the rest of the alkali metals?
Answer: Lithium is the smallest alkali metal, so its charge density is very high and its polarising power is large. Its compounds therefore show significant covalent character (e.g. LiCl is partly covalent and soluble in organic solvents), its carbonate and nitrate decompose differently (Li2CO3 → Li2O + CO2 on heating, unlike other alkali carbonates), it forms a nitride (Li3N) directly with nitrogen, and it resembles magnesium (diagonal relationship) more than the other alkali metals in several properties.
3. Why aluminum metal is used in the manufacture of cooking utensils whereas magnesium is not considered useful for this purpose?
Answer: Aluminium is used because it is a good conductor of heat, light, strong, corrosion-resistant (a thin protective Al2O3 layer forms on its surface), and does not react with food or water under normal cooking conditions. Magnesium is unsuitable because it is more reactive (it reacts with hot water/steam and with acids in food), it is more flammable (burns with a brilliant white flame), and it is softer and less durable for daily utensil use.
