This chapter is built from the official PCTB textbook Computer Science and Entrepreneurship, Class 9 (based on the Revised National Curriculum of Pakistan 2023, approved by the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board, Lahore). The exercise questions below are the book's own exercise questions; the answers are model answers written for this guide.
Chapter titles and exercise questions are taken from the official book's contents and exercise pages. No page numbers are claimed for individual questions.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human thinking and learning in computer systems — machines that can perceive, decide and improve with experience. Its main subfields are Machine Learning (systems that learn patterns from data), Natural Language Processing (understanding human language), Computer Vision (understanding images and video), and Robotics (machines that act in the physical world). DBMS (database management) is not a subfield of AI.
In AI models, techniques are used to improve accuracy, make decisions more interpretable, and reduce computational complexity — all three at once. An explainable (white-box) model lets us understand how it reached a decision; a black-box model gives answers we cannot easily explain.
In healthcare, AI supports personalised drug development, automated diagnosis from scans and test results, and remote patient monitoring — all three, which is why 'all of the above' is the right answer in the exercise. In education, AI gives personalised practice, automatic marking of objective work, and early warnings when a student is falling behind.
In daily life AI recommends films and products, powers voice assistants and translation, manages traffic, and helps farmers predict weather and crop disease. The pattern is the same everywhere: AI is strongest where there is lots of data and a clear goal.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of everyday devices — lights, watches, fridges, tractors, cars — that sense, connect and share data over the internet. An IoT system has four parts: sensors (collect data), devices (act on it), networks (carry it), and data analysis (turn it into decisions).
In transportation, IoT gives smart traffic management, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, and predictive maintenance that warns before a part fails. In smart homes it adjusts heating and lighting; in healthcare, wearables watch heart rate and alert doctors.
IoT security concerns include device vulnerability (cheap devices with weak passwords), data privacy (sensors in homes and on bodies collect sensitive data), and lack of standardisation (devices from different makers do not follow the same rules) — all of the above, together.
AI brings its own risks: algorithmic bias (a model trained on unfair data makes unfair decisions), privacy loss, and over-trust in automated answers. The response is practical: strong passwords and updates for devices, check what data an app collects, and always verify an AI answer that matters before acting on it.
1. Which of the following is not a subfield of AI?
Answer: (d) — DBMS is not a subfield of AI; machine learning, NLP and computer vision are.
2. Which of these is a security concern in IoT deployments?
Answer: (d) — IoT security concerns include device vulnerability, data privacy and lack of standardisation — all of the above.
3. Which of the following is an application of AI in healthcare?
Answer: (d) — AI in healthcare covers personalised drug development, automated diagnosis and remote monitoring — all of the above.
4. What is the primary purpose of using AI techniques in machine learning models?
Answer: (d) — AI techniques in ML models aim to improve accuracy, enhance interpretability and reduce complexity — all of the above.
5. What is the key difference between explainable (whitebox) and unexplainable (blackbox) AI models?
Answer: (b) — The key difference is the ability to understand the decision-making process.
6. Which of the following is an application of IoT in the transportation domain?
Answer: (d) — IoT in transportation covers smart traffic management, V2V communication and predictive maintenance — all of the above.
Answer: Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human thinking and learning in computer systems — machines that perceive, reason, learn from data and act.
Answer: Two healthcare examples: automated diagnosis from medical scans, and remote patient monitoring with wearable devices (a third is personalised drug development).
Answer: AI techniques improve machine learning models by increasing their accuracy, making their decisions more interpretable, and reducing the computation they need.
Answer: The Internet of Things is the network of everyday devices — appliances, vehicles, wearables — that sense, connect and share data over the internet.
Answer: IoT matters because it connects devices into systems: sensors collect real-world data, networks carry it, and analysis turns it into automatic action, from smart homes to city traffic.
Answer: In transportation, IoT gives smart traffic management, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and predictive maintenance that warns before a vehicle part fails.
Answer: In education, AI gives personalised learning: systems adapt exercises to each student's level and pace, and give instant feedback. It automates marking of objective tests and administrative work, freeing teachers for teaching. It analyses student performance to warn early when a student is falling behind. It powers tutoring chatbots, language practice and translation, and makes learning accessible — for example speech-to-text for students with hearing difficulties. Used well, it supports teachers; it does not replace them.
Answer: An IoT system has four components: (1) Sensors — collect data from the world (temperature, motion, heart rate). (2) Devices — the things themselves (lights, watches, machines) that can act on commands. (3) Networks — carry data between devices and servers (Wi-Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth). (4) Data analysis — software and often cloud services that turn raw data into information and decisions, such as switching on heating when a room gets cold. Security runs across all four parts.
Answer: Subfields of AI: Machine Learning — systems that learn patterns from data and improve with experience, used in recommendations and predictions. Natural Language Processing — understanding and generating human language, used in translation and chatbots. Computer Vision — understanding images and video, used in face recognition and medical scans. Robotics — building machines that sense and act in the physical world, from factory arms to delivery robots. Related areas include expert systems and planning. DBMS (database management) is not an AI subfield.
AI simulates human thinking through machine learning, language processing, computer vision and robotics; it already serves healthcare, education and transport; IoT connects everyday devices through sensors, networks and data analysis; and both raise security, privacy and bias questions that must be handled.
