This chapter is built from the official PCTB textbook Computer Science and Entrepreneurship, Class 9 (based on the Revised National Curriculum of Pakistan 2023, approved by the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board, Lahore). The exercise questions below are the book's own exercise questions; the answers are model answers written for this guide.
Chapter titles and exercise questions are taken from the official book's contents and exercise pages. No page numbers are claimed for individual questions.
Entrepreneurship is the process of starting a new business or organisation: spotting a need in the market, creating an idea to meet it, and taking the risk to bring it to life. Entrepreneurs are innovators, risk-takers and problem-solvers.
Key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs are innovation (doing something new or better), willingness to take calculated risks, persistence, and good decision-making. Types include startup founders, social entrepreneurs (who solve social problems) and intrapreneurs (who innovate inside an existing company). Pakistan has one of the world's largest freelancing communities, which shows this spirit in action.
Market needs are found with surveys and questionnaires, market research and observation of what people actually do. Brainstorming is useful for generating ideas, but it is not itself a technique for identifying market needs — that distinction is the point of the exercise question.
Design thinking solves problems in five steps, and the first step is Empathising — understanding the user's life and problems deeply — before defining the problem, ideating, prototyping and testing. A product built without empathy usually solves the wrong problem.
A business plan is primarily written to outline strategies for growth — what the business will sell, to whom, how it will earn, and how it will grow; it also helps attract investors, but the plan itself is the growth roadmap. Its parts include market analysis, revenue model and marketing strategy.
Market analysis means researching competitors and understanding customer needs — who buys, what they want, what they can pay. Digital tools multiply a small business: market research tools find the audience, online marketing tools reach them, and e-commerce platforms sell to them; together they let a small Pakistani business sell across the country, even the world.
Ethical business means honest advertising, fair prices, paying suppliers on time, and protecting customer data. Sustainable business adds care for the environment and the community, so profit does not come at the cost of health or nature.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) give businesses a shared checklist: for example SDG 7 is Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 5 is gender equality, SDG 12 responsible consumption, SDG 17 partnerships). A local business can align with an SDG — for instance a solar lamp shop supports SDG 7 — and saying so honestly wins customer trust.

6. The primary purpose of creating a business plan is:
Answer: (b) — A business plan primarily outlines strategies for growth (it also helps attract investors).
7. What does market analysis involve?
Answer: (b) — Market analysis involves researching competitors and understanding customer needs.
8. Which Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) focuses on affordable and clean energy?
Answer: (b) — SDG 7 focuses on affordable and clean energy.
Answer: An entrepreneur is a person who starts and runs a new business, taking the risk in order to turn an idea into a product or service.
Answer: Digital technologies — websites, social media, mobile apps and e-commerce platforms — let a small business advertise, sell and deliver to customers anywhere in the world at low cost, without needing shops in every city.
Answer: An e-commerce platform is a website or app where goods and services are bought and sold online, handling product listings, payments and orders (for example Daraz or an online store).
Answer: Identifying market needs first means the business solves a real problem people will pay for; without it, even a good product may find no customers.
Answer: Design thinking puts the user first: it helps solve the right problem creatively by understanding users, defining their real need, and testing solutions with them before committing money.
Answer: Market analysis in a business plan shows who the customers are, what competitors offer, and what the business must do differently — it proves the idea has a real market and guides pricing and marketing.
Answer: Businesses can support the SDGs by using clean energy (SDG 7), reducing waste and packaging (SDG 12), treating workers fairly (SDG 8), and selling sustainable products — for example a shop using solar power and paper bags.
Answer: Entrepreneurship drives economic growth by creating jobs, new products and services, and competition that improves quality and lowers prices. It drives innovation because entrepreneurs try new ideas that established firms avoid: mobile apps, online shops and new services often start as small ventures. It also spreads opportunity — freelancing and small digital businesses let people in small towns earn from customers worldwide — and tax revenue from growing businesses funds public services.
Answer: The three tool types work as a chain: market research tools (surveys, search trends, competitor analysis) find who the customers are and what they want; online marketing tools (social media, search advertising, email) reach those customers cheaply and measurably; e-commerce platforms (online stores, payment systems) turn interest into sales and deliver beyond the local area. Together, a small business can research on Monday, advertise on Tuesday, and sell across Pakistan — or the world — by Friday, with data from sales feeding back into the next round of research.
Answer: Example: a small solar-lamp shop in Lahore. It aligns with SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by selling solar lamps that replace kerosene; with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption) by using recyclable packaging and repairing lamps instead of discarding them; and with SDG 8 (Decent Work) by training and employing local youth as installers. It can show this honestly in its shop and online — 'every lamp replaces a kerosene lamp' — which also wins customers who care about clean energy.
Answer: Digital entrepreneurship means starting and running a business mainly through digital channels: selling online, marketing on social media, delivering digital products or services, or using apps and platforms as the shopfront. Principles of ethics in business: honesty in advertising and pricing; fairness to customers, workers and suppliers; respect for the law, including tax and copyright; protection of customer data and privacy; care for the environment and community; and honouring promises and contracts. An ethical digital business does not sell fake reviews, copy others' content, or misuse customer data.
Answer: Components of a business plan: (1) Executive summary — the idea in brief. (2) Business description — what the business sells and why. (3) Market analysis — customers, competitors and demand. (4) Organisation and management — who runs it. (5) Products or services — what is offered and its advantage. (6) Marketing and sales strategy — how customers will be reached. (7) Revenue model and financial plan — prices, costs, expected income and funding needs. (8) Risk analysis — what could go wrong and how it will be handled.
Entrepreneurship turns a spotted need into a business through innovation and calculated risk; market research and empathising design thinking find real needs; a business plan maps growth, market analysis and revenue; and ethical, sustainable businesses that respect an SDG earn lasting trust.
