ENGLISH

Stanley Houghton's one-act play is set in a single Edwardian living room. It opens with Mrs. Amelia Slater preparing for her sister Elizabeth Jordan's arrival after their father, Abel Merryweather, is believed to have died upstairs.

Before the Jordans arrive, Amelia and her husband Henry carry down the old man's bureau and clock, sending a shabby chest of drawers up in their place — Amelia has long wanted the bureau. The sisters then squabble over mourning clothes, a newspaper notice, a gold watch and an unpaid insurance premium. Victoria, the innocent granddaughter, bluntly wonders whether the family is stealing her grandfather's things.

Then Abel walks in alive. He announces that on Monday he will go to the lawyer to alter his will, pay his overdue insurance premium, and get married at St. Philip's Church to Mrs. John Shorrocks, who keeps the 'Ring-o'-Bells'. The play ends in comedy: the greedy plans collapse in one stroke.

3. Theme and Messageمرکزی خیال اور پیغام
🏷 Tags: theme, grief or greed, self-interest, appearances, inheritance, satire
ENGLISH

Theme: Literature and poetry — human relationships. Beneath the comedy lies satire: the play exposes greed disguised as grief. Both sisters are driven by self-interest rather than sorrow — competing over mourning clothes, the bureau, the clock, the gold watch and the insurance money — while their concern is appearances and inheritance, not their father.

Message: Hypocrisy is revealed by actions, not words. Victoria, the child, is the moral centre: innocent and blunt, she says what adults hide — she wonders whether the family is stealing, remembers her grandfather had been drinking, and is simply glad he is alive. The confined single room forces the characters together and makes their true motives impossible to hide.

Mourningclothes→Bureau &clock→Gold watch→Insurancemoney
Gham ya lalach samjho: زبانوں پر غم, ہاتھوں میں furniture — mourning کپڑے, bureau, گھڑی اور insurance money پر مقابلہ دکھاتے ہے کہ اصل محرک غم نہیں, لالچ ہے.

4. Grammar Point + Writing Skillگرامر + تحریری مہارت
🏷 Tags: grammar, direct narration, indirect narration, tense change, pronoun change
ENGLISH

Grammar — direct and indirect narration: direct speech repeats exact words in quotation marks (Abel said, 'I am alive'); indirect speech reports them with tense and pronoun changes (Abel said that he was alive). The unit practises converting the play's dialogues — questions, orders, exclamations — into indirect speech, plus antonyms and root words, and dictionary/thesaurus work (choosing the correct option).

Writing — scenes with dialogue and director's notes: write a short scene (15–20 lines) with characters' names in bold or capitals before their lines, director's notes in brackets for actions, movements and emotions, and punctuation for pauses and emphasis. The unit also asks students to identify the mechanics of playwriting: structure, dialogue, punctuation and stage directions.

اردو

گرامر — براہ راست اور بالواسطہ روایت: براہ راست کلام میں الفاظ واوین میں دہرائے جاتے ہیں (Abel said, 'I am alive')؛ بالواسطہ روایت میں زمانے اور ضمیر بدل کر رپورٹ کیا جاتا ہے (Abel said that he was alive)۔ یونٹ میں ڈرامے کے مکالموں کو بالواسطہ میں بدلنے کی مشق ہے، ساتھ متضاد الفاظ اور ماخذ الفاظ کی مشق بھی۔

تحریر — مکالموں اور ہدایت کار کے نوٹس والے مناظر: ایک مختصر منظر (15 تا 20 سطریں) لکھیں جس میں کرداروں کے نام موٹے یا بڑے حروف میں ان کی سطروں سے پہلے ہوں، ہدایت کار کے نوٹس بریکٹ میں اعمال و جذبات کے لیے ہوں، اور رموز اوقاف توقف و زور کے لیے ہوں۔

Direct: 'I amalive'→Indirect: hewas alive→Tense changes→Pronounchanges
Barah-e-rast se balwasta samjho: Direct میں exact الفاظ quotation marks میں (Abel said, 'I am alive'), indirect میں tense اور pronoun بدل جاتے ہیں (Abel said that he was alive) — drama کے dialogues اسی سے practise کرو.

ENGLISH

William Stanley Houghton (1881–1913) was an English playwright of the Manchester School, known for realistic domestic dramas of Edwardian middle-class life. The Dear Departed (written 1908, first performed in London) is his most famous one-act play: one room, one evening, and a family undone by its own greed — a comedy that works because every character behaves exactly as selfish people do.

Exam tip: learn the three announcements of Abel (new will, insurance premium, marriage to Mrs. John Shorrocks) and Victoria's role as the truth-teller — both are asked as long and short questions.

📝 Exercise with Answersایکسرسائز مع جوابات

Exercise Questions — with Answers (from the library masters). The English textbook prints no answer keys, so these answers are the masters' model answers, not official keys, and are kept as written in the masters. Only the Reading and Critical Thinking questions from the masters are reproduced here as Q&A; vocabulary drills, oral communication and other writing tasks are not reproduced as separate Q&A — this unit's grammar point and writing skill are explained in Section 4 and its glossary in Section 2.

1. What do the actions of Mrs. Slater and Mrs. Jordan reveal about their true motivations?

Answer / جواب

Both sisters are driven by greed and self-interest rather than grief, competing over mourning clothes, the bureau, the clock, the gold watch and the insurance money. Their concern is appearances and inheritance, not their father — they prepare for a funeral as if it were a business negotiation.

دونوں بہنیں غم کے بجائے لالچ اور خود غرضی سے چل رہی ہیں — ماتمی کپڑوں، بیورو، گھڑی، سونے کی گھڑی اور بیمہ کی رقم پر مقابلہ؛ ان کی فکر ظاہر اور وراثت ہے، نہ کہ والد۔

2. Why do Mrs. Slater and Henry move the bureau and the clock downstairs before the Jordans arrive?

Answer / جواب

Mrs. Slater has long wanted the bureau and knows Elizabeth would bargain hard for it, so she has it brought down while a shabby chest of drawers is sent up in its place. She takes the clock too because theirs is worthless. The move is theft presented as housekeeping.

محترمہ سلیٹر عرصے سے بیورو چاہتی تھیں اور جانتی تھیں کہ الزبتھ اس پر سخت سودے بازی کرے گی، اس لیے انہوں نے اسے نیچے منگوا لیا اور اس کی جگہ پرانا صندوق اوپر بھیج دیا۔

3. How does Victoria's character differ from the adults around her?

Answer / جواب

Victoria is innocent and blunt: she openly wonders whether the family is stealing her grandfather's things, remembers he had been drinking, and is simply glad he is alive — which exposes the adults' hypocrisy. Where adults speak in euphemisms, the child speaks the truth.

وکٹوریا معصوم اور صاف گو ہے: وہ کھلے عام سوچتی ہے کہ کیا خاندان چوری کر رہا ہے، اور دادا کے زندہ ہونے پر صرف خوش ہے — اس سے بڑوں کی منافقت بے نقاب ہوتی ہے۔

4. What three things does Abel Merryweather announce he will do on Monday?

Answer / جواب

(1) He will go to the lawyer to alter his will. (2) He will pay his overdue insurance premium. (3) He will get married at St. Philip's Church to Mrs. John Shorrocks, who keeps the 'Ring-o'-Bells'. Each announcement strikes directly at the daughters' plans: the will, the money and the household itself.

(1) وکیل کے پاس جا کر وصیت بدلے گا۔ (2) واجب الادا بیمہ قسط ادا کرے گا۔ (3) سینٹ فلپ چرچ میں محترمہ جان شوراکس سے شادی کرے گا۔

5. How does Stanley Houghton use satire in The Dear Departed?

Answer / جواب

Through irony and understatement: a funeral that is really a property division, grief that is really greed, and a 'dead' man who returns to judge the living. The satire works because nobody states it — the audience sees the gap between what characters say (sorrow) and what they do (grabbing furniture).

ستم ظریفی اور کم گوئی سے: ایک جنازہ جو دراصل جائیداد کی تقسیم ہے، غم جو دراصل لالچ ہے، اور ایک 'مرحوم' جو زندوں کا فیصلہ کرنے واپس آتا ہے۔

6. What role does the clock on the mantelpiece play in the story?

Answer / جواب

The clock is the second stolen object and the proof of greed: the Slaters take Abel's good clock and leave their worthless one. When Abel returns and notices his clock downstairs, it becomes evidence of what has been going on — a small object that exposes a large moral failure.

گھڑی دوسری چرائی گئی چیز اور لالچ کا ثبوت ہے: سلیٹر ایبل کی اچھی گھڑی لے لیتے ہیں اور اپنی بے قیمت گھڑی چھوڑ دیتے ہیں؛ ایبل کی واپسی پر یہی گھڑی سب کچھ بے نقاب کرتی ہے۔

7. How do the characters display hypocrisy throughout the play? Give examples where their words contradict their actions.

Answer / جواب

They speak of grief while dividing property: Amelia weeps for her father while carrying off his bureau; the sisters quarrel about who mourns 'properly' while competing for the gold watch; they discuss the newspaper announcement's wording while planning who gets what. Words say sorrow; actions say inheritance.

ENGLISH

This chapter is Stanley Houghton's one-act play, set in a single Edwardian living room: Mrs. Amelia Slater prepares for her sister Elizabeth Jordan's arrival after their father, Abel Merryweather, is believed to have died upstairs. Beneath the comedy lies satire — both sisters are driven by self-interest rather than sorrow, competing over mourning clothes, the bureau, the clock, the gold watch and the insurance money. It covers the glossary, that grief-versus-greed theme, direct and indirect narration, and Houghton himself. The exercise is Reading and Critical Thinking questions with answers — a play, so its status as a play is stated in the sections, not in the title.

Revision guidance: For every character question, separate what they say from what they do: sorrow in words, grabbing furniture in deeds — that gap is the satire, and the first exercise question asks what their actions reveal about their true motivations. For narration, change tense and pronouns together, never one alone.
