Patriotism means love and devotion to one's motherland. The word patriot comes from the Latin patriota, meaning a countryman. For a patriot, the sovereignty, integrity and honour of the country are supreme values on which no compromise can be made.
The lesson presents Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who secured a separate homeland so that Muslims could protect their values, culture and identity, and honours the soldiers who laid down their lives in the wars of 1965, 1971 and Kargil (1999) — many of them awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan's highest military award. It ends by asking students what patriotism means in daily life: honesty, duty and service, not slogans alone.

Theme: Patriotism — practising patriotism, not merely professing it. The lesson distinguishes fact from opinion and asks students to judge claims about their country with evidence.
Message: A patriot serves the country daily: by obeying the law, by honesty in work, by protecting public property, and by putting the nation's honour above personal gain. Soldiers defend the borders; students defend the future by studying hard and serving society. As S. W. Scott's quoted line warns, a man devoid of patriotic spirit is poor indeed, however rich he may be.
Grammar — tenses, gerunds, infinitives and participles: a gerund is a verb + -ing used as a noun (Swimming is healthy); an infinitive is to + verb (to swim); a participle is a verb form used as an adjective or in tenses (a broken window; she is swimming). Some verbs change meaning with gerund or infinitive: I remember meeting him (past event) vs Remember to meet him (future duty); He stopped smoking (gave up) vs He stopped to smoke (paused in order to smoke).
Writing — paragraph and informative essay: use a K-W-L chart (what I Know, what I Want to know, what I Learned), arrange ideas by cause and effect, and debate the topic — the unit's debate motion is 'The Role of Youth in Nation-Building'.
گرامر — زمانے، اسم مصدر (gerund)، مصدر (infinitive) اور اسم فاعل/مفعول (participle): gerund فعل + ing ہے جو اسم کا کام کرتا ہے (Swimming is healthy)؛ infinitive to + فعل ہے (to swim)؛ participle فعل کی وہ صورت ہے جو صفت یا زمانوں میں استعمال ہوتی ہے۔ بعض افعال کے معنی gerund یا infinitive سے بدل جاتے ہیں، جیسے I remember meeting him (ماضی کا واقعہ) بمقابلہ Remember to meet him (مستقبل کا کام)۔
تحریر — پیراگراف اور معلوماتی مضمون: K-W-L چارٹ استعمال کریں (جو میں جانتا ہوں، جو جاننا چاہتا ہوں، جو سیکھا)، خیالات کو سبب و نتیجہ کی ترتیب دیں، اور مباحثے میں حصہ لیں — یونٹ کا مباحثہ 'قوم سازی میں نوجوانوں کا کردار' ہے۔
The book names no single author for this prose lesson; its heroes are historical. Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah led the struggle for a separate homeland so Muslims could live by their own values and identity. The Nishan-e-Haider recipients of 1965, 1971 and Kargil (1999) are presented as the practical model of patriotism: men who gave their lives for the sovereignty, integrity and honour named in the lesson.
Exam tip: memorise the Latin root patriota, the three supreme values, and the three wars — all three are asked every year.
Exercise Questions — with Answers (from the library masters). The English textbook prints no answer keys, so these answers are the masters' model answers, not official keys, and are kept as written in the masters. Only the Reading and Critical Thinking questions from the masters are reproduced here as Q&A; vocabulary drills, oral communication and other writing tasks are not reproduced as separate Q&A — this unit's grammar point and writing skill are explained in Section 4 and its glossary in Section 2.
Patriotism is loving your country and proving that love by duty: obeying the law, keeping your surroundings clean, helping neighbours, and working honestly. Example: students who keep their school clean, respect teachers and help flood victims are practising patriotism, even without slogans.
حب الوطنی وطن سے محبت اور فرض کی ادائیگی ہے: قانون کی پابندی، صفائی، پڑوسیوں کی مدد اور ایمانداری سے کام۔
A commendable quality is one deserving praise — in this lesson, selfless devotion to the country: putting the nation's sovereignty, integrity and honour above personal comfort and gain, as the martyrs did.
قابل تعریف خوبی وہ ہے جو تعریف کی مستحق ہو — اس سبق میں ملک کے لیے بے لوث لگن، یعنی ذاتی فائدے پر قومی عزت کو ترجیح دینا۔
Because he gave the Muslims a clear constitutional and political case: a separate homeland where they could protect their religion, culture, values and identity, instead of living as a permanent minority. His leadership united the Muslims of the subcontinent behind one demand, which led to Pakistan in 1947.
کیونکہ انہوں نے مسلمانوں کو واضح سیاسی موقف دیا: ایک الگ وطن جہاں وہ اپنے مذہب، ثقافت اور شناخت کی حفاظت کر سکیں۔
The sovereignty, integrity and honour of the country. A patriot makes no compromise on these three: the country's freedom to decide for itself, its wholeness and safety, and its good name.
ملک کی خودمختاری، سالمیت اور عزت — ایک محب وطن ان تینوں پر کوئی سمجھوتہ نہیں کرتا۔
In the wars of 1965 and 1971 against India, and in the Kargil War of 1999. Many of those who embraced martyrdom in these wars were awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan's highest military award.
1965 اور 1971 کی جنگوں اور کارگل 1999 کی جنگ میں۔ ان میں سے کئی شہدا کو نشان حیدر دیا گیا۔
It is awarded to members of the armed forces who show extraordinary bravery and sacrifice in war, usually by giving their lives. They show courage, selflessness, discipline and total devotion to the country's honour.
نشان حیدر ان فوجیوں کو دیا جاتا ہے جو جنگ میں غیر معمولی بہادری اور قربانی دکھائیں، عام طور پر جان قربان کر کے۔
Schools can teach it through the national history, flag ceremonies, debates (like 'The Role of Youth in Nation-Building'), community service and honest daily conduct. It matters because students are the future citizens: if they learn duty and honesty young, the nation becomes strong and united.
اسکول قومی تاریخ، مباحثوں، سماجی خدمت اور روزمرہ ایمانداری سے حب الوطنی سکھا سکتے ہیں؛ کیونکہ طلبہ ہی مستقبل کے شہری ہیں۔
That patriotism is not feeling alone but action: love of the motherland expressed through duty, sacrifice and service — from the Quaid's political struggle to a soldier's martyrdom to a student's honest work. A country is honoured by citizens who serve it, not merely praise it.
This chapter defines patriotism as love and devotion to the motherland — from Latin patriota, countryman — with the sovereignty, integrity and honour of the country as supreme values. It covers the glossary, the theme of practising (not merely professing) patriotism and judging claims with evidence, tenses, gerunds, infinitives and participles, and the lesson's heroes: Quaid-e-Azam and the Nishan-e-Haider recipients. The exercise is Reading and Critical Thinking questions with answers.
Revision guidance: Learn your own definition of patriotism with one example from your life or community — the first exercise question asks exactly that. Then fix the gerund/infinitive/participle difference with one example each; that distinction is the grammar mark in this unit.
