Source note / ذریعہ نوٹ: This revised page is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for this unit (the masters call it “Unit 7”). The official Class 9 English textbook was not on disk for this build, so no official-book page coverage is claimed here and no official-book page numbers are given; no official status is claimed for the questions below, which are from the library masters, with the masters' model answers (the English textbook prints no answer keys). Urdu headings and the Urdu line on the banner are supplied translations for study help — the English textbook prints no Urdu subtitle.

ENGLISH

'If' is a father's counsel to his son. If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you; if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, yet make allowance for their doubting too; if you can dream — and not make dreams your master; if you can think — and not make thoughts your aim…

…if you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same; if you can bear to hear the truth you have spoken twisted by knaves; if you can watch the things you gave your life to broken, and stoop and build them up with worn-out tools; if you can force your heart and nerve and sinew to serve your turn long after they are gone, and hold on when there is nothing in you except the Will which says 'Hold on!' — then, the poem says, you will be a Man, and the Earth and everything in it will be yours.

3. Theme and Message
🏷 Tags: theme, bravery, freedom, nature, character, self-control, courage
ENGLISH

Theme: Literature and poetry — bravery, freedom, nature. More deeply: character. The poem lists the virtues that make a person, not a position: self-control, humility, patience, courage, honesty and balance.

Message: Manhood is not age or strength but steadiness: neither success nor failure should master you; neither dreams nor thoughts should rule you; neither crowds nor kings should change your values. The famous final bargain — fill 'the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds' worth of distance run' — means: use every minute fully, without wasting it or fearing it.

Self-control→Humility→Patience→Courage

4. Grammar Point + Writing Skill
🏷 Tags: grammar, if-clauses, subordinating conjunctions, correlative, transitions
ENGLISH

Grammar — subordinating and correlative conjunctions and transitional devices: subordinating conjunctions (if, when, because, although) join a dependent clause to a main clause — the whole poem is built on if. Correlative pairs work in pairs: both/and, either/or, neither/nor, not only/but also. Transitional devices (however, therefore, meanwhile, furthermore) guide the reader from one idea to the next.

Writing — paraphrasing and summary: paraphrase the second and third stanzas of 'If' using the steps (read several times, use synonyms, change word forms, rearrange words), then write a summary of the poem. The unit's model summary is of Robert Frost's 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening'.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening کا ہے۔

If you cankeep→If you candream→If you canmeet→Then you area Man
If-jumle samjho: پوری نظم 'if' پر کھڑی ہے — subordinating conjunction dependent clause جوڑتا ہے, اور correlative جوڑے (both/and, neither/nor) شرط کو مکمل کرتے ہیں.

5. About the Poet
🏷 Tags: poet, Kipling, 1865-1936, Bombay, Jungle Book, Kim, Nobel 1907
ENGLISH

Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) was an English writer born in Bombay (Mumbai), India. He is the author of The Jungle Book and Kim, and in 1907 became the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. 'If' (written around 1895, published 1910) is written as a father's advice — traditionally read as advice to his son John.

Exam tip: the Triumph/Disaster 'impostors' line and the 'unforgiving minute' line are the two most quoted; practise the stanza explanation of stanzas 2 and 3, which the book sets as paraphrase tasks.

📝 Exercise with Answers

Exercise Questions — with Answers (from the library masters). The English textbook prints no answer keys, so these answers are the masters' model answers, not official keys, and are kept as written in the masters. Only the Reading and Critical Thinking questions from the masters are reproduced here as Q&A; vocabulary drills, oral communication and other writing tasks are not reproduced as separate Q&A — this unit's grammar point and writing skill are explained in Section 4 and its glossary in Section 2.

1. According to the poet, how should one respond to criticism and blame?

Answer / جواب

Keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you. Do not answer anger with anger or panic: stay calm, think clearly, and accept fair criticism without losing self-control. Calmness under blame is the first test of character in the poem.

2. What quality does the poem emphasize in handling doubt and self-trust?

Answer / جواب

Balanced self-trust: trust yourself when all men doubt you, but still make allowance for their doubting. True confidence is not stubbornness — it listens, weighs the doubt, and still decides for itself.

3. What message does the poem give about dreams and aspirations?

Answer / جواب

Dreams are valuable but must not become your master, and thoughts must not become your aim. The unit explains this as staying grounded and realistic while pursuing goals: dream and plan, but do not let dreaming replace doing, and do not let thinking replace living.

4. How should a person handle twisted truths and personal losses?

Answer / جواب

Bear to hear the truth you have spoken twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, without losing your temper or your honesty. And if you watch the things you gave your life to broken, stoop and build them up with worn-out tools — rebuild patiently instead of complaining or giving up.

5. How should one treat Triumph and Disaster?

Answer / جواب

Treat those two impostors just the same. Triumph (success) and Disaster (failure) are both temporary and both deceptive: success can breed pride, failure can breed despair. A steady person neither boasts in victory nor breaks in defeat.

6. According to the poem, how should one persist in difficult times?

Answer / جواب

Force your heart, nerve and sinew to serve your turn long after they are gone, and hold on when there is nothing in you except the Will which says 'Hold on!' Persistence, for Kipling, is not feeling strong — it is continuing when strength is gone, on willpower alone.

7. What is the message of the poem regarding integrity and humility in life?

Answer / جواب

Walk with kings without losing the common touch, and never lose honesty for applause: if all men count with you but none too much, and you fill every minute with honest effort, you will be a Man. Integrity means the same values in success and failure, with crowds and with kings.

ENGLISH

This chapter is Kipling's poem 'If': a father's counsel to his son — keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, trust yourself yet make allowance for doubting, dream without making dreams your master, and treat Triumph and Disaster just the same. It covers the glossary, the theme of character (self-control, humility, patience, courage, honesty, balance), if-clauses and correlative conjunctions, and Kipling himself. The exercise is Reading and Critical Thinking questions with answers — a poem, so its status as a poem is stated in the sections, not in the title.

Revision guidance: Learn the poem as conditions, not as separate lines: each 'if' is one virtue, and the closing line ('you'll be a Man, my son') is the reward for all of them together. The first exercise question — responding to criticism and blame — is answered from the opening lines: stay calm, do not answer anger with anger.
