ENGLISH

The word Quran means the book that is recited most of all. The Quran was revealed over about 23 years. In the lifetime of the Holy Prophet ﷺ it was preserved in two ways: the Companions memorised it, and the scribes of revelation (Kuttab-e-Wahi) wrote it down.

After the Prophet ﷺ, in the caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq, many Huffaz were martyred in the Battle of Yamama. On the advice of Hazrat Umar Farooq, Hazrat Abu Bakr ordered the Quran to be collected in one volume. Hazrat Zaid bin Sabit led this work, and the collected copy (Mus'haf) stayed first with Hazrat Abu Bakr, then with Hazrat Umar, and then with Hazrat Hafsa.

In the caliphate of Hazrat Usman Ghani, differences of recitation appeared among Muslims. On the pointing out of Hazrat Huzaifa bin Yaman, Hazrat Usman united all Muslims on one recitation, prepared the standard Mus'haf-e-Usmani, and sent copies to the main centres. This is how the Quran reached us complete and protected.

ENGLISH

Hadith means the sayings, actions and approvals of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. A saying is called Hadith Qawli, an action Hadith Fi'li, and a silent approval Hadith Taqreeri. The Quran itself commands us to obey the Prophet ﷺ: whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, keep away from it (Surah Al-Hashr, 7).

In the Prophet's ﷺ own time, Hadith was preserved by memorisation and practice; the Companions also wrote some of it down with permission. In the time of the Tabi'een, Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz ordered the official collection (tadween) of Hadith at government level. Later the great books were compiled, including the Sahah Sitta — six authentic books, among them Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

ENGLISH

The chapter closes with 40 of the Asma-ul-Husna with their meanings, for example: Al-Hayy (the Ever-Living), Al-Qayyum (the Sustainer of all), Al-Wahid (the One), Al-Ahad (the Unique), As-Samad (the One free of all need), Al-Qadir (the All-Powerful), Al-Awwal (the First) and Al-Akhir (the Last), Az-Zahir (the Manifest) and Al-Batin (the Hidden), At-Tawwab (the Accepter of repentance) and Al-Afuww (the Pardoner).

Learning these names is not only memorisation: each name tells us something about Allah and how a believer should live — trusting the Sustainer, fearing the All-Powerful, and turning back to the Accepter of repentance. The full list of 40 names with meanings is given in this chapter.
