This revised page was built from the existing Class 9 Mathematics library chapter (chapter-12-complete-guide-book.html) in the same series. No official Class 9 Mathematics book copy was on disk for a fresh page-by-page check (the books are with the user), so no book page numbers are claimed and the exercise below is carried over from the master chapter as given — selected solved questions plus SLO-based practice MCQs — not newly verified against the book and not presented as the official exercise. Answers follow the master chapter. All section figures on this page are self-made diagrams (no book pictures).
Raw numbers are not data until they mean something: the book notes that '85, 96, 70, 80…' are just numbers until we know they are students' marks. Data handling (a term first used by Sir Ronald Fisher) organises information so it can be read at a glance.
A grouped frequency table sorts data into class intervals (e.g. marks 0–9, 10–19, …) and counts how many values fall in each class — the frequency. Choose intervals that cover all data without gaps or overlaps, and keep the number of classes reasonable (about 5–15).
A histogram draws a bar for each class, with widths equal to the class intervals and heights equal to the frequencies — bars touch, because the data is continuous. With unequal class intervals, the bar's area (not just its height) must represent frequency, so height = frequency ÷ class width (frequency density).
A frequency polygon joins the midpoints of the tops of the histogram bars with straight lines (extended to the axis at both ends). It shows the shape of the distribution — where data clusters and where it tails off — at a glance.
For grouped data use class midpoints (x) as representatives: mean = Σ(fx) / Σf. The modal class is the class with the highest frequency. The median is the middle value: find the class containing the (n/2)th value (the median class), then interpolate within it — the book teaches the grouped median by cumulative frequency.
Example: classes 0–9 (f=2), 10–19 (f=5), 20–29 (f=8): Σf = 15, midpoints 4.5, 14.5, 24.5; Σfx = 9 + 72.5 + 196 = 277.5; mean = 277.5/15 = 18.5. Modal class = 20–29.
