This revised page was built from the existing Class 9 Mathematics library chapter (chapter-13-complete-guide-book.html) in the same series. No official Class 9 Mathematics book copy was on disk for a fresh page-by-page check (the books are with the user), so no book page numbers are claimed and the exercise below is carried over from the master chapter as given — selected solved questions plus SLO-based practice MCQs — not newly verified against the book and not presented as the official exercise. Answers follow the master chapter. All section figures on this page are self-made diagrams (no book pictures).
Probability is the chance of an event occurring, written as a number between 0 and 1: P(E) = (favourable outcomes) / (total possible outcomes). P = 0 means impossible; P = 1 means certain. The book's word comes from Latin 'probity'; Girolamo Cardano is known as the father of probability.
Examples: P(rolling a 6 on a fair die) = 1/6. P(drawing a red card from a pack) = 26/52 = 1/2. Every probability problem starts the same way: count the total outcomes, count the favourable ones, divide.
If E is an event, 'not E' (written E′ or Ē) is its complement: P(not E) = 1 − P(E). This is often the easier route: P(not rolling a 6) = 1 − 1/6 = 5/6.
Use it for warranties and guarantees too: if a company knows 2% of products fail within warranty, then P(a product survives the warranty) = 1 − 0.02 = 0.98. Always check: P(E) + P(not E) must equal 1.
When outcomes cannot be counted in advance (a cricket team's win, a product's failure), estimate probability from experiments: relative frequency = (times the event happened) / (total trials). The more trials, the better the estimate.
Example: a team won 12 of its last 20 matches → estimated P(win next match) = 12/20 = 0.6 = 3/5. This is how the book's examples judge chances from previous performances — including whether a team will win its next cricket match.
