ENGLISH SUMMARY

Pakistan's creation in the subcontinent was a historic event of the 20th century, and a strong ideology made it possible. The word ideology is used for the Urdu word Nazaria (نظریہ).

  • The idea, thought and sketch that emerges in mind to bring existence into being is called ideology.
  • An outline of thoughts designed to achieve any purpose is called ideology.
  • Collective thinking of a nation on a single agenda for a specific purpose is also called ideology.
  • Something that unites people and persuades them to try to achieve it, is called ideology.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

The sources of an ideology are:

  1. Common Religion: Religion is not merely a set of prayers; it affects the entire social life of a nation. In the 19th century, Hindu movements like Arya Samaj and Brahmo Samaj aimed to propagate Hinduism and bring down Muslims; the Congress Government (1937–39) reinforced this, and it became difficult for Muslims to maintain their religious identity in a united India.
  2. Common Political Objectives: With the arrival of the British, democracy emerged, but Muslims were a minority, so their share in government was small. Muslim identity started to emerge from the consciousness given by the new political system.
  3. Common Educational Objectives: The British system gave English the central position; many Muslim scholars declared learning English against Islam and rejected the new system — all on the basis of the ideology of Islam.
  4. Common Economic Objectives: After the War of Independence 1857, the British attitude became harsh towards Muslims, who continued to be economically oppressed and ignored; their business and trade opportunities diminished, but they did not abandon their ideology.
  5. Common Cultural Objectives: Urdu was the official language when the British occupied India. Hindus tried to replace Urdu with Hindi (written in Devanagari script, while Urdu is in Arabic script). Muslims feared they would no longer maintain their identity in a united India.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Ideology reflects people's thinking. Because of it, nations seem alive. It explains the national rights and duties of human beings together, keeps the nation united, and provides the power to face all kinds of difficulties to achieve objectives.

Ideology creates the spirit of struggle, and ensures the achievement of objectives. It gives rise to revolution and new ways emerge because of it.

No theory comes into being immediately unless some events are at work behind it. Ideology is usually created to eliminate deprivation in the backward people of society. Difficult situations and social pressures give rise to vision, and the troubled people of society become its strength. Prolonged deprivation of basic human rights gave rise to a vision of equal rights — similarly, when the Muslims of the subcontinent began to struggle for their social and political rights, it was because of the cruel attitude of the British and the Hindus, which created a wave of freedom within the Muslims. The ideology of a separate homeland came into being. Behind every ideology there are elements like history, traditions, customs, temperament, psychology and religion.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

The Ideology of Pakistan is based on Islam. Its basic values come from the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah, and from the socio-cultural life of the Muslims of the subcontinent: their religion, history, traditions and customs are different from those of the Hindus.

Muslims believe in the unity of Allah (Tawheed), the finality of the Prophethood (Aqeeda-e-Risalat), and a complete code of life given by Islam — covering worship, morality, law, society and government. That is why Muslims felt they could not live their collective life freely under a system in which they were a permanent minority, and they demanded a separate homeland where they could live according to their religion and beliefs.

The elements of the Ideology of Pakistan, as the chapter presents them, are therefore: Islamic faith and values, the distinct Muslim identity and culture of the subcontinent, the Two-Nation Theory, and the struggle for a separate state where Islamic principles and social justice could guide national life.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

The Two-Nation Theory says that Muslims and Hindus are two separate nations. Its roots grew out of the Muslims' experience after 1857: economic deprivation, the loss of political power, and the fear that in a united India their religion, language and culture would not survive.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was the first to see this clearly. In 1867, during the Urdu–Hindi controversy, he declared that Muslims and Hindus were separate nations. He founded the M.A.O. School and College (later Aligarh Muslim University) and the Muhammadan Educational Conference, so that Muslims could gain modern education and protect their identity.

Other milestones followed: the Congress Ministries of 1937–39 convinced many Muslims that Hindu-majority rule would not protect them; and in January 1933 Chaudhry Rahmat Ali issued the pamphlet “Now or Never”, giving the demand for a separate Muslim state its name — Pakistan.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Allama Muhammad Iqbal gave the idea of a separate Muslim state its philosophical shape. In his Allahabad address of 1930, he said that Islam is a complete code of life and that the Muslims of the north-west needed a state of their own where they could live by it.

Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah turned the idea into a political movement. He said that Hindus and Muslims belong to two different religions based on totally different beliefs, with different heroes, epics and ideologies, and that the union of two nations was fatal for the subcontinent because it was not based on equality but on numerical minority and majority.

In his address in Ahmadabad on 29th December 1940, he said Pakistan had existed for centuries and the North West had remained the homeland of Muslims; independent states of Muslims should be established in these areas so they could live according to the teachings of Islam. On 11th October 1947, addressing government officers, he said the mission was a state where people could live like free people in their own socio-cultural set-up for the promotion of social justice and Islamic ideology. While inaugurating the State Bank on 1st July 1948, he said the economic system of the West was creating unsolvable problems and had failed to do justice; Pakistan should present an economic system based on the true concepts of Islam and social justice.

Long 3. Explain the Ideology of Pakistan in the light of Allama Muhammad Iqbal's pronouncements.

Answer / جواب

In his 1930 Allahabad address, Iqbal said Islam is a complete code of life, not merely a religion of private worship, and that the Muslims of the north-west of the subcontinent needed a state of their own. He argued that a separate Muslim state was the only way for Muslims to live by Islamic law, culture and identity — this gave the Pakistan demand its philosophical foundation.

Long 4. Highlight the Ideology of Pakistan in the light of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's pronouncements.

Answer / جواب

The Quaid said Hindus and Muslims are two different nations with different beliefs, heroes and epics, and their union was fatal because it rested on majority-minority numbers, not equality. In Ahmadabad (29 December 1940) he said Pakistan had existed for centuries and the North West was the Muslims' homeland. On 11 October 1947 he described the mission as a state of free people living in their own socio-cultural set-up for social justice and Islamic ideology; on 1 July 1948 he called for an economic system based on the true concepts of Islam and social justice.

Long 5. Explain the Ideology of Pakistan with reference to the basic values of Islam and socio-cultural aspects of Muslims in the subcontinent.

Answer / جواب

Islam's basic values — Tawheed, Risalat, equality of human beings, justice and a complete code of life — shaped Muslim society. Socio-culturally, the Muslims of the subcontinent had their own religion, language (Urdu), heroes, traditions, laws and way of life, different from the Hindus. When Hindu revivalist movements and Congress rule (1937–39) threatened this identity, Muslims concluded that only a separate homeland could protect their faith and culture — that conclusion is the Ideology of Pakistan.

Long 6. Explain the Two-Nation Theory.

Answer / جواب

The Two-Nation Theory holds that Muslims and Hindus are two separate nations, not one. They differ in religion, beliefs, heroes, epics, laws, culture and social customs. Sir Syed declared this in 1867; Iqbal gave it philosophical form in 1930; the Quaid made it the political basis of the Pakistan Movement. Because the two nations could not live together as one nation under majority rule, a separate homeland — Pakistan — was demanded and created in 1947.
