This revised page was built from the existing Class 9 Physics library chapter (chapter-1-complete-guide-book.html) in the same series. No official Class 9 Physics book copy was on disk for a fresh page-by-page check, so no book page numbers are claimed and the exercise is carried over from the master chapter as given, not newly verified against the book. Answers follow the master chapter. Section C Question 1.3 is figure-based in the master (micrometer reading); the master’s own note explaining this is kept with the exercise, and no figure value has been invented.
Measurement is comparing an unknown quantity with a widely accepted standard quantity. Every measurement has two parts: a number and a unit — a measurement without a unit is meaningless.
Physical quantities can be measured with instruments: length (ruler), time (clock), temperature (thermometer), mass, volume, density. Non-physical quantities — love, affection, fear, wisdom, beauty, colour as a feeling — cannot be measured with tools; they belong to the perception of the observer.
Base quantities are independent: length (metre, m), mass (kilogram, kg), time (second, s), temperature (kelvin, K), electric current (ampere, A), luminous intensity (candela, cd), amount of substance (mole, mol). These seven SI base units are the foundation of all measurement.
Derived quantities are combinations of base quantities: speed (m s−1), force — newton (kg m s−2), pressure — pascal (kg m−1 s−2), density (kg m−3), volume (m3). A standard unit is needed so that a measurement means the same thing everywhere — for trade, science and industry.
Very large and very small numbers are written with prefixes or scientific notation (one digit before the decimal point × a power of 10). Multiples: kilo (103, k), mega (106, M), giga (109, G). Sub-multiples: milli (10−3, m), micro (10−6, μ), nano (10−9, n), pico (10−12, p), femto (10−15, f).
Examples: 5 pm = 5 × 10−12 m; 15 ns = 15 × 10−9 s; 6 μm = 6 × 10−6 m; 5 fs = 5 × 10−15 s. One day = 86,400 s = 86.4 ks = 8.64 × 104 s. One light year = speed of light × one year ≈ 9.46 × 1015 m.
