This revised page was built from the existing Class 9 Physics library chapter (chapter-8-complete-guide-book.html) in the same series. No official Class 9 Physics book copy was on disk for a fresh page-by-page check, so no book page numbers are claimed and the exercise is carried over from the master chapter as given, not newly verified against the book. Answers follow the master chapter. The master exercise for this chapter has Sections A–D only (no numerical section); it is carried over as-is and no numerical section has been invented. Section A Questions 8.6 and 8.7 are figure/diagram-based: the master gives answer letters but the options themselves are diagrams, so no option text has been invented and both are shown unmarked with their descriptive answers.

1. 🧲 Magnetic Materials and Poles

ENGLISH

Magnetism is a force acting at a distance. Magnetic materials — iron, nickel, cobalt (and alloys like steel and alnico) — are attracted by magnets. Non-magnetic materials — brass, copper, wood, glass, plastic, aluminium — are not attracted (aluminium is the book's example of a non-magnetic material).

Every magnet has two poles: north (N) and south (S). Like poles repel, unlike poles attract. Repulsion is the sure test of a magnet: attraction alone proves nothing, because a magnet attracts both a magnet and an unmagnetised magnetic material. Isolated poles cannot exist: breaking a magnet always gives new complete magnets, each with its own N and S poles.

2. 🧭 Magnetic Field and Lines of Force

ENGLISH

A magnetic field is the region around a magnet in which another magnetic object experiences a force. Its direction at a point is the direction in which the N-pole of a compass needle settles there. The field at a point has both magnitude and direction.

Magnetic lines of force show the field: outside a magnet they leave the north pole and enter the south pole; inside, they run south to north, forming closed loops. They never cross each other. The strength of the field is proportional to the number of lines passing through unit area placed perpendicular to the lines (crowded lines = strong field). Where lines are far apart, the field is weak; neutral points are places where the field cancels to zero.

3. 🔄 Induced Magnetism — Temporary and Permanent Magnets
🏷 Tags: induced, magnetism, temporary, permanent, magnets
ENGLISH

Induced magnetism: a magnetic material placed near (or touching) a magnet becomes a magnet itself for a while — it is magnetised by induction. When the inducing magnet is removed, soft iron loses its magnetism quickly, while steel keeps it.

Temporary magnets (usually soft iron, and electromagnets) act as magnets only while in a magnetic field or while current flows. Permanent magnets (steel, cobalt, alnico, neodymium, ferrite) retain their magnetism. So permanent magnets cannot be made from soft iron — soft iron is for temporary magnets and cores. Identifying a magnet: bring one end near each pole of a suspended bar magnet in turn — if it is attracted by both poles it is only a magnetic material; if one pole repels it, it is a magnet (repulsion is the real test).

QUESTIONS + ANSWERS
8.1 Two bar magnets are stored in a wooden box. Label the poles of the magnets and identify P and Q objects.

Answer: The magnets are stored with unlike poles facing each other (N opposite S) so they attract and stay stable. P (top) and Q (bottom) are soft-iron keepers placed across the poles: they complete the magnetic circuit through the keepers instead of through air, which prevents the magnets from demagnetising each other in storage.

8.2 A steel bar has to be magnetised by placing it inside a solenoid such that end A of a bar becomes N-pole and end B becomes S-pole. Draw circuit diagram of solenoid showing steel bar inside it.

Answer: Wind the solenoid and connect it to a cell through a switch so that, viewed from end A, the current flows anticlockwise (right-hand grip rule: fingers curl with current, thumb points to the N-pole at A). The steel bar sits inside the coil as the core; when the switch is closed, A becomes N and B becomes S. Reversing the battery reverses the poles.

8.3 Two bar magnets are lying as shown in the figure. A compass is placed at the middle of the gap. Its needle settles in the north-south direction. Label N and S poles of the magnets. Justify your answer by drawing fields lines.

Answer: The needle settles along the north–south line because the field across the gap is straight: the facing ends must be unlike poles (one N, one S), so field lines run straight from the N-facing end across the gap into the S-facing end, and the compass needle aligns with them. If the facing ends were like poles, the field at the middle would push the needle sideways, not along the gap.

8.4 Electric current or motion of electrons produce magnetic field. Is the reverse process true, that is the magnetic field gives rise to electric current? If yes, give an example and describe it briefly.

Answer: Yes — electromagnetic induction: when a magnet moves in or out of a coil (or a coil moves in a magnetic field), the changing magnetic flux induces a current in the coil. Example: a generator/dynamo — rotating a coil between magnet poles produces alternating current; moving a bar magnet through a coil makes a galvanometer needle deflect.

8.5 Four similar solenoids are placed in a circle as shown in the figure. The magnitude of current in all of them is the same. Show by diagram, the direction of current in each solenoid such that when current in anyone solenoid is switched OFF, the net magnetic field at the centre O is directed towards that solenoid. Explain your answer.

Answer: Arrange each solenoid so its N-pole faces the centre O (currents by the right-hand grip rule, anticlockwise viewed from O). Then each solenoid's field at O points away from itself, toward and past the centre; the four fields cancel at O. Switch one off (say A on the left): the remaining fields no longer cancel — the opposite solenoid's field (pointing left) is now unbalanced, so the net field at O points toward the switched-off solenoid A. The same holds for any solenoid switched off.
