Support and movement are fundamental aspects of human biology, enabling us to perform a wide range of activities from basic locomotion to complex tasks. This chapter delves into the structure of bones and cartilage, which provide the necessary support framework for the body. We will explore the various types of joints, and examine the unique features of the three types of muscles — skeletal, smooth, and cardiac — that drive motions. The sliding filament model will be discussed to understand muscle contraction at a molecular level. Additionally, we will look at common disorders affecting the skeletal and muscular systems, highlighting their impact on human health and mobility.
12.1- Bones and Cartilage: Bones, cartilage, and other connective tissues make an internal framework called the skeleton that provides structural support, protects vital organs, and produces movement and locomotion.
Structure of Bone: Bones are made of connective tissue reinforced with calcium and specialized bone cells. The bone's surface is covered by a tough membrane called the periosteum. The thick layer under the periosteum is made of hard material and is called compact bone. It makes up the majority of the bone tissue. The basic structural units of compact bone are called Haversian systems. A Haversian system is made of:
In addition to these structures, there are small channels that run perpendicular to the Haversian canals and connect them with each other and with the periosteum. They also contain blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels. Collagen fibres anchor the periosteum to the underlying bone tissue, providing additional strength and stability to the bone.
Beneath the compact bone there is spongy bone. It has a latticework structure consisting of bony spikes that make it light and strong.
📌 Note: The broad ends of a bone are called epiphysis while the middle part along the length of bone is called diaphysis or shaft.
Bone Marrow: Many bones also contain a soft tissue called bone marrow, which can be either red or yellow. Red bone marrow is found in spongy bone, the ends of long bones, ribs, vertebrae, the sternum, and the pelvis. It produces red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells. Yellow bone marrow fills the shafts of long bones. It consists mostly of fat cells and serves as an energy reserve. It can also be converted to red bone marrow and produce blood cells when severe blood loss occurs.
📌 Note: Despite their number and size, bones make up less than 20% of the body's mass. Bones are not dry, rigid structures, as they appear. They are moist, living tissues.
Types of Bone Cells: There are three types of cells, i.e. osteoblasts, osteocytes, and osteoclasts, involved in the development, growth and remodelling of bones.
Bone Development: The process of bone formation is also called osteogenesis. It begins during embryonic development and continues throughout life, playing a vital role in growth, maintenance, and repair of bones. There are two primary pathways of osteogenesis.
📌 Note: Even after bones have fully formed, osteogenesis continues in the form of bone remodelling. This ongoing process involves the breakdown of old bone by osteoclasts and the formation of new bone by osteoblasts.
Structure of Cartilage: As described in the previous paragraph, most of the cartilage of the foetus is replaced by bone. However, some cartilage remains throughout life and provides flexibility. For example, at the areas between bones, at the end of nose, in the outer ear, and along the inside of the trachea.
A layer of connective tissue called perichondrium surrounds the cartilage. It contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves that supply the cartilage tissue. Inside perichondrium is the cartilage matrix which is composed of collagen, elastin, proteoglycans, and other fibres. It gives the tissue its strength, flexibility, and resistance to compression. Unlike other connective tissues, there are no blood vessels inside cartilage matrix. The cells of cartilage are supplied by diffusion. Because of this, it heals very slowly.
The cartilage cells, called chondrocytes, are present within small spaces called lacunae, which are embedded in cartilage matrix. Chondrocytes are responsible for synthesizing and maintaining the matrix of cartilage.
Cartilage Types: Cartilage can be classified into three types. Hyaline cartilage is the most common type and is found in the nose, trachea, and the articulating surfaces of bones in joints. Fibrocartilage is found in areas of the body that experience high stress and tension, such as the intervertebral discs and the pubic symphysis. Elastic cartilage is found in the external ear and epiglottis.
Comparison between Bone and Cartilage: External covering — bone: periosteum; cartilage: perichondrium. Cell types — bone: osteoblast, osteocytes and osteoclasts; cartilage: chondrocytes. Extracellular matrix — bone: contains calcium crystals and collagen fibres; cartilage: contains collagen and other fibres. Blood vessels — bone: present; cartilage: absent. Growth & repair — bone: has the ability to grow and repair itself throughout life; cartilage: has limited ability to repair itself, as it has no direct blood supply.
Arrangement of Bones in Skeleton: The human skeletal system consists of 206 bones. The skeleton has two main divisions, i.e. the axial skeleton and appendicular skeleton.
Axial Skeleton: The axial skeleton forms the axis of the body. Its bones support and protect the organs of the head, neck, and chest. It consists of skull, ribs, spine, and sternum.
a- Skull: It consists of the following 22 bones.
b- Middle ear: There are 6 bones (3 pairs) in middle ears. These are called ossicles and include malleus, incus and stapes.
c- Neck bone: The hyoid bone is a small single bone which lies at the base of skull below the tongue. It does not articulate with any other bone of head.
d- Vertebral column: It consists of 33 bones called vertebrae. The vertebrae make five groups:
e- Rib Cage & Chest bone: The rib cage consists of 24 bones (12 pairs) called ribs and a sternum. The sternum (chest bone) is a long flat bone located in the central part of the chest. The ribs articulate posteriorly with the thoracic vertebrae. On anterior side, 7 pairs of ribs attach directly with the sternum by means of separate costal cartilages. These are called true ribs. The 8th, 9th and 10th pairs attach to the sternum by means of a common costal cartilage and are called false ribs. The last 2 pairs of ribs (11th and 12th) are known as floating ribs, because they do not attach to the sternum.
Appendicular skeleton: The appendicular skeleton includes the bones present in appendages (arms and legs). These are pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, forelimbs and hindlimbs.
a- Pectoral girdle: It consists of 2 pairs, i.e. a pair of clavicles (collar bones) and a pair of scapulae (shoulder bones). One end of each clavicle articulates with the sternum. The other end articulates with the scapula.
b- Forelimbs: Each forelimb (arm, wrist, hand, fingers) consists of the following 30 bones.
c- Pelvic girdle: It is made up of two hip bones. Each hip bone contains 3 bones, i.e. ilium, ischium and pubis. In each hip bone, there is a bony socket, called acetabulum, that is composed of the fusion of three bones. The two hip bones are joined at the front by the pubic symphysis (a cartilaginous joint that connects the pubic bones at the midline of the body).
d- Hindlimbs: Each hindlimb (leg, ankle, foot, toes) consists of 30 bones.
Joints: A joint is a place where two bones or bone and cartilage come together. Three major kinds of joints are found in the human body, i.e. fibrous (immoveable) joints, cartilaginous (slightly moveable) joints and synovial (freely moveable) joints.
1- Fibrous Joints: In fibrous joints, the bones are directly connected to each other by fibrous connective tissue consisting mainly of collagen. These joints permit no movement of bones. Examples of fibrous joints include: sutures that occur only between the immovable bones of the skull; joints between the tibia and fibula bones in the lower leg; joints between teeth and their sockets in the jawbone.
2- Cartilaginous Joints: In these joints, the bones are connected by a layer of cartilage. Cartilaginous joints allow little movement of the bones. There are two main types of cartilaginous joints: in some cartilaginous joints, the bones are connected by hyaline cartilage — for example, the joint between the first rib and sternum; in some cartilaginous joints, the bones are connected by fibrocartilage — for example, pubic symphysis in the pelvic girdle and intervertebral discs.
3- Synovial Joints: Synovial joints are the most common type of joint in the human body, and they allow a wide range of movement. A smooth, tough, and elastic hyaline cartilage, called articular cartilage, covers the ends of the bones in the joint. It provides a smooth and frictionless surface for movement. A fibrous capsule surrounds the synovial joint and helps to hold the bones together. The fibrous capsule is composed of an outer layer of ligaments and an inner lining of synovial membrane, which secretes synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint. Strong bands of connective tissue that connect the bones in the joint are called ligaments.
There are six main types of synovial joints based on the range of motion.
📌 Note (Joint Transplantation): It is a surgical procedure in which a damaged joint is replaced with a healthy natural joint (from donor) or an artificial joint. The most common types of joint transplantation are: Total joint replacement: in this procedure, the entire damaged joint is replaced with an artificial joint made of metal, plastic, or ceramic. Partial joint replacement: in this procedure, only the damaged part of the joint is replaced with an artificial component. This is often used in the knee joint. Allograft transplantation: in this procedure, a healthy joint from a donor is transplanted to replace the damaged joint. This technique is often used in the ankle and knee joints. Chondrocyte implantation: in this procedure, chondrocytes from the patient's own joint are implanted into the damaged joint. This technique is often used in the knee joint.
Human Skeleton & Musculature helps in Bipedal Posture: The bipedal posture of humans is linked to skeleton and musculature in several ways.
Problems due to Improper Posture: Improper posture can negatively affect bones and joints, causing:
12.2- Disorders of Skeletal System: The human skeletal system is susceptible to a wide range of disorders which can affect the structure and function of bones, joints and connective tissues.
Disorders of the Skeleton:
1- Disc Slip: Intervertebral discs are found between vertebrae and act as shock absorbers and help in movement of the vertebral column. A herniated or slipped disc occurs when the outer layer of intervertebral disc tears or ruptures, causing the inner gel-like substance to leak out and press against nearby nerves or spinal cord. This may be due to trauma, degenerative changes due to aging, and repetitive strain on vertebral column. The symptoms of disc slip include pain, numbness and tingling in the affected area, weakness or loss of muscle function, and in severe cases, bowel or bladder dysfunction.
2- Spondylosis: It is the degeneration of the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, ligaments or cartilage of the vertebral column. This may result in the narrowing and fusion of intervertebral disc and the development of bone outgrowths. It puts pressure on nerves or the spinal cord. Spondylosis is most common in the lower back (lumbar) and neck (cervical) regions. The most common cause of spondylosis is the natural degeneration of intervertebral discs. It occurs with aging, genetic factors, trauma, prolonged poor posture and obesity. Symptoms include back or neck pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.
3- Sciatica: It is the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve starts from the lower back and goes down through the buttocks and into each leg. It is often caused by a herniated or bulging disc pressing on the sciatic nerve. Other causes include trauma, infection, inflammation and spondylosis. The symptoms of sciatica are pain and discomfort in lower back, buttocks, legs and feet, tingling and numbness in legs and feet, and weakness or difficulty in moving legs and feet.
4- Arthritis: Arthritis includes different inflammatory conditions that affect joints. Symptoms of all types of arthritis include joint pain and stiffness. Other symptoms of arthritis include redness, warmth and swelling in affected joints. Types of arthritis are:
5- Osteoporosis: It is a condition in which bones become weakened and more prone to fractures and breaks. It occurs when bone density decreases, making bones fragile and porous. The causes of osteoporosis are:
Injuries to Joints: Injuries to joints include pain, swelling and reduced motion.
1- Dislocations: In a dislocation, the bones of a joint are forced out of their normal positions due to a sudden impact or trauma. A severe dislocation can tear muscles, ligaments and tendons. The symptoms of dislocation include swelling, intense pain and immobility of the affected joint. Rheumatoid arthritis can also cause dislocation. A dislocated joint can only be successfully corrected by a physiotherapist. Surgery may be needed to repair or tighten stretched ligaments.
2- Sprain: A sprain is an injury to the ligaments that connect bones in a joint. The most commonly injured ligaments are in the ankle, knee and wrist. A sprain happens when a joint is forced beyond its normal range of motion, causing ligaments to stretch or tear. Sprains are usually treated with physical therapy. Dressings are used to immobilize the sprain and provide support.
First aid Treatment for Dislocation and Sprain: If someone is injured by a dislocation or sprain, first aid treatment involves the following steps.
12.3- Muscles: A muscle is a tissue that can contract in a coordinated way to produce movements of body parts or the whole body. The individual muscle cells are called muscle fibres or myofibres.
📌 Note: The ability of muscles to contract and relax not only enables body movement but also provides the force needed to push substances such as blood and food through the body.
📌 Note: Essentially all animals employ muscles. For example, the wings of a mosquito are moved rapidly through the air by quickly contracting flight muscles; an earthworm burrows into the soil driven by strong muscles pushing the body past the surrounding soil.
Types of Muscles: There are three types of muscles, i.e. skeletal muscles, smooth muscles, and cardiac muscles.
1- Skeletal Muscles: These muscles are responsible for moving body parts such as limbs, trunk and face. The fibres of these muscles are elongated cells with striations. The contractions of skeletal muscles are usually consciously controlled; hence, these are also called voluntary muscles.
2- Smooth Muscles: These muscles are present in the walls of the stomach, intestines, blood vessels and other internal organs. Their fibres are spindle-shaped cells, each with a single nucleus and lack of striations, surrounded by connective tissue. Since most of the movements of smooth muscles cannot be consciously controlled, these are involuntary muscles.
3- Cardiac Muscles: These muscles are found only in the walls of the heart. Their fibres branch extensively. They are striated like skeletal muscle, but each cell usually contains one nucleus located near its centre.
Comparison of Three Muscle Types: Appearance — skeletal: regular striped; smooth: un-striped; cardiac: irregular striped. Cell shape — skeletal: spindle or cylindrical; smooth: spindle; cardiac: branched. Number of nuclei — skeletal: many nuclei per cell; smooth: one nucleus per cell; cardiac: one nucleus per cell. Voluntary control — skeletal: usually voluntary; smooth: usually no voluntary control; cardiac: no voluntary control. Function — skeletal: to move the skeleton; smooth: to move substances through hollow organs; cardiac: to pump blood.
Structure of Skeletal Muscles: Skeletal muscles are made of groups of cells (muscle fibres) arranged in bundles enclosed by collagen fibres and connective tissue. At the ends of the muscles, collagen fibres and connective tissue form tendons, which attach the muscles to bones.
Ultrastructure of Skeletal Muscles: Each skeletal muscle cell is a cylindrical, multinucleated cell enclosed by a plasma membrane called sarcolemma. The cytoplasm of the muscle cell is called sarcoplasm, which contains sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). The sarcolemma penetrates deep into the cell and forms hollow, elongated tubes called transverse tubules (T-tubules). The T-tubules reach the ends of the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
Each muscle fibre contains a bundle of 4 to 20 elongated threadlike structures called myofibrils. The myofibrils are made of two types of filaments: thick filaments made of myosin and thin filaments made of actin. The thick filaments create the dark bands, called A-bands, while the thin filaments create the light bands, called I-bands. The alternating dark and light bands give the muscle its striped (striated) appearance.
The thin (actin) filaments are attached to protein discs called Z-lines. The section between two Z-lines is called a sarcomere, the smallest unit of muscle contraction. Within a sarcomere, the thin filaments extend from the Z-line toward the centre, where they overlap the thick filaments. The overlap of thick and thin filaments creates the A-band. The A-band has a lighter central region called the H-band, where no overlap occurs. During contraction, the thin filaments slide deeper into the A-band, causing the H-band and I-band to narrow. This causes the A-bands to be pulled closer together, shortening the muscle. The centre of the H-band may have a dark line called the M line, which stabilizes the thick filaments.
📌 Note (Summary): The skeletal muscle is made of groups of cells called muscle fibres. Each muscle fibre contains bundles of myofibrils in its cytoplasm. Each myofibril is made of 2 types of myofilaments, i.e. myosin and actin.
Biochemistry of Myofilaments: Thick myofilaments are about 16 nm in diameter and are made of many myosin proteins. Each myosin protein consists of two intertwined polypeptide chains that end in a globular "head". The heads of the myosin proteins extend from the thick filaments and connect to the actin filaments during contraction.
Thin myofilaments are 7–8 nm in diameter and are made of three proteins. (i) The core of the thin filament is made of two twisted strands of actin. (ii) Two strands of tropomyosin wrap about the actin core and stiffen it. In a relaxed muscle fibre, tropomyosin blocks the myosin binding sites on actin. (iii) Troponin is present at regular intervals on the thin myofilaments. It consists of three polypeptides — one is inhibitory and binds to actin, the second binds to tropomyosin and keeps it in place, and the third binds to calcium ions.
Mechanism of Muscle Contraction (Sliding Filament Model): A muscle contracts when thin myofilaments slide past the thick myofilaments so that they overlap to a greater degree. The steps of the sliding filament model are:
Step 1- Sarcomeres at Relaxed State: In a relaxed state, sarcomeres are at their normal length. Myosin heads are not bound to actin because the binding sites are blocked by tropomyosin. Troponin is attached to tropomyosin. Myosin heads have hydrolysed ATP into ADP and Pi.
📌 Note: When a nerve impulse reaches the sarcolemma, the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is released by the motor neuron at the synapse. It stimulates the sarcolemma to produce its own electrochemical impulses, which are carried into the fibre to the T-tubules.
Step 2- Arrival of Nerve Impulse: The nerve impulse travels along the sarcolemma to the T-tubules and then to the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The sarcoplasmic reticulum releases calcium ions into the cytosol. Calcium ions bind to troponin, causing it to shift tropomyosin away from the myosin-binding sites on actin.
Step 3- Cross-bridges and Power-stroke: As the binding sites are exposed, myosin heads bind to actin to form cross-bridges. The myosin heads release ADP and Pi and undergo a conformational change. They bend toward the centre of the sarcomere, pulling the actin filaments with them. This is called the power stroke. It shortens the sarcomere by bringing the Z-lines closer together and the H-zone disappears. This process occurs simultaneously in all sarcomeres, causing muscle contraction. The adjacent A-bands come closer but do not shorten.
Step 4- Separation of Myosin Heads from Actin: After pulling, the myosin head receives a new ATP molecule. This allows the myosin head to detach from the actin. The splitting of this ATP into ADP and Pi puts the myosin head into its original conformation, allowing the cross-bridge cycle to begin again.
📌 Note: After death, cells can no longer produce ATP, so cross-bridges cannot be broken. This causes the stiffness of death called rigor mortis. In a living cell, there is always enough ATP to allow the detachment of myosin heads from actin.
Arrangement of Skeletal Muscles at Moveable Joints: Skeletal muscles are attached to bones by tough connective tissues called tendons. Typically, a muscle has two attachment points on different bones. The end of the muscle that is attached to the stationary bone during contraction is called the origin, while the end attached to the bone that moves is called the insertion. The middle part of the muscle is called the belly.
For movement of bones at a joint in two directions, muscles work in pairs that produce opposing actions. This is called an antagonistic arrangement. When one muscle, called a flexor, contracts, it bends a bone at a joint. When the opposing muscle, called an extensor, contracts, it straightens the bone at the joint. During antagonistic action, when the flexor contracts, the extensor is relaxed, and vice versa.
Movement at Knee Joint: The knee joint is between the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia and fibula (lower leg bones). Flexion or bending of the lower leg is carried out by the hamstrings, a group of three muscles located at the back of the thigh. They originate at the pelvic girdle and top of the femur, and their insertions are at the upper fibula and tibia. Extension or straightening of the lower leg is carried out by the quadriceps, a group of four muscles located at the front of the thigh. They originate at the ilium (part of the pelvic girdle) and femur, and their insertions are at the patella (kneecap) and tibia. When the hamstrings contract, the lower leg bends and the quadriceps relax. When the quadriceps contract, the lower leg straightens and the hamstrings relax.
Muscle Disorders:
1- Muscle Fatigue: Muscle fatigue is a decline in muscle performance after prolonged or intense physical activity, or due to disease. Symptoms include pain, decreased muscle strength, and reduced endurance. Contributing factors are: during exercise, muscles use ATP to contract, and when the ATP supply is depleted, the muscle is no longer able to contract; as muscles work, they produce metabolic wastes such as lactate, hydrogen ions and reactive oxygen species, which contribute to fatigue; when muscle fibres are repeatedly activated, they are not able to effectively handle calcium ions, impairing muscle function; prolonged or intense exercise can cause small damage to muscle fibres, leading to inflammation and reduced function. Muscle fatigue typically improves with rest. If severe, it requires medical attention.
2- Muscle Cramps: Muscle cramps are sudden, involuntary, often painful contractions of a muscle or group of muscles. They usually last from a few seconds to several minutes and most commonly occur in legs and feet. Common causes include dehydration, salt imbalance, overuse or injury of the muscle, certain medications (like diuretics), and medical conditions such as diabetes, liver disease and nerve damage. Relief includes gently stretching and massaging the affected muscle, applying heat or cold, and pain-relieving medications can also help.
3- Tetany: Tetany is a condition of involuntary muscle contractions or spasms due to increased muscle tone and hyperexcitability of nerves. It can occur in the hands, feet, face and larynx. The most common cause is hypocalcaemia (low blood calcium), possibly due to vitamin D deficiency, renal failure, or thyroid disorders. It can also be caused by other salt imbalances, such as low magnesium in blood. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. If caused by salt imbalances, treatment may involve calcium or magnesium supplements or intravenous fluids to restore electrolyte balance.
Difference between Tetany and Tetanus: These are often confused because of similar names. (1) Tetany is increased muscle tone and overactive nerves causing involuntary contractions or spasms; tetanus is a severe bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani producing a toxin that affects the nervous system and leads to muscle stiffness and spasms. (2) Tetany can affect various body parts (hands, feet, face, larynx); tetanus mainly affects jaw and neck muscles. (3) Tetany can result from electrolyte imbalance or nerve problems; tetanus is caused by a specific bacterial infection. (4) Tetanus is more serious and potentially life-threatening compared to tetany.
📌 Note (Muscles pull but do not push): Muscle fibres are designed to contract and shorten, pulling on tendons and moving bones. When a muscle contracts, it pulls a bone via a tendon. When it relaxes, the bone moves back to its original position. Muscles cannot push because they only generate force by pulling. If a muscle were to push, it would need to be attached to bones at both ends and make both ends move closer together, which is not possible in the body. Muscles are usually attached to a bone at only one end.
📌 Note (Skeleton is a system of rods and levers): The skeleton works like rods and levers. Bones act as rods, giving structure and support and protecting internal organs. Joints serve as fulcrums (pivot points) for levers, allowing movement. Muscles generate effort or force, while the weight or resistance being moved is the load. For example, when lifting a weight, the bicep muscle in the upper arm acts as a lever, the elbow joint is the fulcrum, the bicep provides the effort, and the weight is the load.
These are the book's own exercise questions from printed pages 277–279 of the official FSc Part 1 Biology textbook, with answers written from the chapter. Read each question, try it yourself, then open the answer to check.
1. Which structures are part of the appendicular skeleton?
Answer: (d) Humerus bone — The humerus is a forelimb bone, and the appendicular skeleton is made of the appendages (arms and legs) plus their girdles. The ethmoid bone is a cranial (axial) bone, floating ribs and lumbar vertebrae are axial too.
2. The term muscle fibre or myofibre refers to;
Answer: (b) A cell — The individual muscle cells are called muscle fibres or myofibres.
3. Which of these extends the entire length of a muscle fibre?
Answer: (b) Myofibril — Each muscle fibre contains bundles of 4 to 20 elongated threadlike myofibrils running its length; a sarcomere is only the section between two Z-lines, and the filaments are the parts inside the myofibrils.
4. Actin filaments are made of proteins;
Answer: (d) Actin, tropomyosin and troponin — Thin myofilaments are made of three proteins: the actin core (two twisted strands), tropomyosin wrapping about it, and troponin at regular intervals. Myosin is the thick filament protein, not part of actin filaments.
5. In a muscle, the Z-line are the proteins for the attachment of the ends of;
Answer: (a) Actin filaments — The thin (actin) filaments are attached to the protein discs called Z-lines; myosin filaments sit in the middle of the sarcomere, not attached to Z-lines.
6. Sarcomere is a part between;
Answer: (c) Two Z-lines — The section between two Z-lines is called a sarcomere, the smallest unit of muscle contraction.
7. Which part of muscle fibre releases calcium ions which trigger contraction?
Answer: (d) Sarcoplasmic reticulum — The nerve impulse travels along the sarcolemma to the T-tubules and then to the sarcoplasmic reticulum, which releases calcium ions into the cytosol; calcium then binds troponin and starts contraction.
8. Which statement is correct to describe sliding filament model of muscle contraction?
Answer: (b) Myosin filaments pull on actin filaments so that sarcomere is shortened. — In the sliding filament model the thin actin filaments slide past the thick myosin filaments and overlap more; the filaments themselves do not shorten, but the sarcomere does as the Z-lines are pulled closer.
9. When a muscle fibre shortens, which of the following also shortens?
Answer: (c) Sarcomere — During contraction the thin filaments slide deeper into the A-band, the H-band and I-band narrow, and the sarcomere shortens; the actin and myosin filaments keep their own lengths.
10. Which statement correctly describes an event of muscle contraction?
Answer: (c) ATP is used to detach the myosin head from actin. — After the power stroke, the myosin head receives a new ATP molecule, which lets it detach from actin; the splitting of that ATP then resets the head. Myosin heads bind actin (not troponin), and it is tropomyosin — not troponin — that blocks the binding sites in a relaxed fibre.
11. Tendons connect bone and;
Answer: (c) Muscle — At the ends of muscles, collagen fibres and connective tissue form tendons, which attach the muscles to bones. (Ligaments, by contrast, connect bone to bone in a joint.)
12. What is true about antagonistic pair of muscles?
Answer: (c) It allows muscles to produce opposing movements — Muscles work in pairs producing opposing actions (flexor bends, extensor straightens) so a joint can move in two directions; muscles only pull, they never push, so (b) is wrong.
Osteoblasts are bone-forming cells that synthesize and secrete unmineralized ground substance; once surrounded by matrix they become osteocytes. Osteocytes are mature bone cells that maintain healthy bone tissue by secreting enzymes and bone mineral content, and regulate calcium release from bone to blood. Osteoclasts develop from macrophages and carry out bone resorption — breaking down bone and releasing calcium and phosphate into blood — which is important for growth and repair.
Eight cranial bones form the cranium (brain box): 2 paired — parietal bones and temporal bones; 4 unpaired — frontal bone, occipital bone, ethmoid bone, and sphenoid bone.
Seven cervical vertebrae (neck; first = atlas, second = axis), twelve thoracic vertebrae (rib-carrying, chest region), five lumbar vertebrae (abdominal region), five sacral vertebrae (fused, forming the sacrum), and four coccygeal vertebrae or coccyx (fused in adults). Sacral + coccygeal together are called pelvic vertebrae. Total = 33 vertebrae.
The rib cage consists of 24 bones (12 pairs) called ribs and a sternum. The sternum is a long flat bone in the central part of the chest; the ribs articulate posteriorly with the thoracic vertebrae.
Pectoral girdle: 2 pairs — a pair of clavicles (collar bones) and a pair of scapulae (shoulder bones); each clavicle articulates with the sternum at one end and the scapula at the other. Pelvic girdle: two hip bones, each containing 3 bones — ilium, ischium and pubis — fused around the acetabulum socket; the two hip bones are joined at the front by the pubic symphysis.
Each forelimb = 30 bones: 1 humerus, 1 ulna, 1 radius, 8 carpals, 5 metacarpals, 14 phalanges (3 per finger, 2 in the thumb). Each hindlimb = 30 bones: 1 femur, 1 patella (kneecap), 1 tibia, 1 fibula, 7 tarsals, 5 metatarsals, 14 phalanges (3 per toe, 2 in the big toe).
In fibrous joints the bones are directly connected by fibrous connective tissue consisting mainly of collagen, and these joints permit no movement. Examples: sutures between the immovable bones of the skull; joints between the tibia and fibula in the lower leg; joints between teeth and their sockets in the jawbone.
⚠️ Honest note: the chapter does not give a separate step-by-step "bone repair" passage. What the book does describe is the mechanism by which bone is rebuilt, and it is this mechanism that repair follows: (1) blood vessels reach the damaged area — as in osteogenesis, blood vessels penetrate the cartilage/bone area and introduce osteoblasts and osteoclasts; (2) osteoclasts break down the damaged/calcified tissue, making room for new bone; (3) osteoblasts build new bone tissue, replacing what was lost (ossification — replacement by mineral deposition); (4) some osteoblasts become trapped in the new tissue and turn into osteocytes, which maintain the repaired bone; (5) remodelling continues afterwards — osteoclasts breaking down old bone and osteoblasts forming new bone — until the bone is restored. The book's first-aid passage for joint injuries (immobilize, ice, elevate, seek medical attention, call 1122) is about dislocation and sprain, not bone repair, so it is not presented here as a repair step.
In osteoarthritis the articular cartilage at the ends of bones in joints gradually softens and disintegrates. It affects the knee, hip and intervertebral joints. (So the structure affected is the articular cartilage of those joints — the joint itself, not the whole bone.)
A skeletal muscle fibre (a cylindrical, multinucleated cell) has: the plasma membrane sarcolemma; the cytoplasm sarcoplasm; the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) inside the sarcoplasm; transverse tubules (T-tubules) formed by the sarcolemma penetrating deep into the cell and reaching the ends of the SR; and bundles of 4 to 20 myofibrils, each made of thick (myosin) and thin (actin) filaments arranged as A-bands, I-bands, Z-lines and sarcomeres.
I-band: the light band created by the thin (actin) filaments. A-band: the dark band created by the thick (myosin) filaments, including the region where thick and thin filaments overlap. H-band (H-zone): the lighter central region of the A-band where no overlap of thick and thin filaments occurs; during contraction the thin filaments slide deeper into the A-band, so the H-band and I-band narrow and the H-zone disappears as the sarcomere shortens.
For movement of bones at a joint in two directions, muscles work in pairs producing opposing actions — an antagonistic arrangement. When one muscle (flexor) contracts it bends a bone at a joint; when the opposing muscle (extensor) contracts it straightens the bone at the joint. During antagonistic action, when the flexor contracts the extensor is relaxed, and vice versa. Example at the knee: hamstrings contract to bend the lower leg while quadriceps relax; quadriceps contract to straighten it while hamstrings relax.
Ligaments are the strong bands of connective tissue that connect bones in a joint and are part of the fibrous capsule holding the joint together — they must give a little while still holding the bones, so they are built to stretch and recoil (elastic). Tendons, by contrast, are the collagen-fibre connective tissue at the ends of muscles that attach muscle to bone; they must transmit the full pulling force of a contracting muscle to the bone without stretching, so they are hard and tough rather than elastic. (This follows the book's own descriptions: ligaments as the joint's connective bands, tendons as collagen-fibre attachments.)
In this guide-book format the diagram is the labelled sarcomere figure in section 12.10 (relaxed vs contracted sarcomere). Its labelled parts are: two Z-lines (protein discs) at the ends — the section between them is one sarcomere; thin actin filaments attached to the Z-lines and extending toward the centre (forming the light I-bands at the ends); thick myosin filaments in the middle (forming the dark A-band); the region where thick and thin filaments overlap (the A-band); the lighter central region of the A-band where no overlap occurs — the H-band (H-zone), with the M line at its centre stabilizing the thick filaments. During contraction the actin filaments slide deeper into the A-band, the H-band and I-band narrow, the Z-lines come closer, and the sarcomere shortens — the filaments themselves do not shorten.
Compact vs spongy bone: Compact bone is the hard thick layer under the periosteum making up most bone tissue, built of Haversian systems; spongy bone lies beneath it as a latticework of bony spikes, light and strong, and houses red marrow.
Axial vs appendicular skeleton: Axial forms the body axis — skull, ribs, spine, sternum — supporting and protecting head, neck and chest organs; appendicular is the appendages — pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, forelimbs, hindlimbs.
True vs false vs floating ribs: True ribs (pairs 1–7) attach directly to the sternum by separate costal cartilages; false ribs (8–10) attach by a common costal cartilage; floating ribs (11–12) do not attach to the sternum at all.
Rheumatoid arthritis vs osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is the commonest type — articular cartilage at bone ends gradually softens and disintegrates (knee, hip, intervertebral joints); rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder in which the synovial membrane becomes inflamed (most commonly wrist and hands).
Fibrous vs cartilaginous joints: Fibrous joints connect bones directly by fibrous connective tissue (mainly collagen) and permit no movement (skull sutures, tibia–fibula, teeth–sockets); cartilaginous joints connect bones by a layer of cartilage and allow little movement (first rib–sternum by hyaline cartilage; pubic symphysis and intervertebral discs by fibrocartilage).
Cartilaginous vs synovial joints: Cartilaginous joints allow only little movement and have no joint cavity; synovial joints are the commonest, freely moveable type — articular cartilage covers the bone ends, a fibrous capsule (outer ligaments + inner synovial membrane secreting lubricating synovial fluid) surrounds them, and they come in six types (ball-and-socket, hinge, pivot, ellipsoidal, saddle, gliding).
Osteoblasts vs osteocytes: Osteoblasts are bone-forming cells synthesizing and secreting unmineralized ground substance; once surrounded by matrix they become osteocytes — mature bone cells that maintain healthy tissue and regulate calcium release to blood.
Tropomyosin vs troponin: Tropomyosin is two strands wrapping about the actin core, stiffening it and blocking myosin binding sites in a relaxed fibre; troponin sits at regular intervals on the thin filament in three parts — one inhibitory binding actin, one binding tropomyosin keeping it in place, one binding calcium ions (calcium binding shifts tropomyosin away and starts contraction).
Ligament vs tendon: Ligaments are strong connective-tissue bands connecting bones in a joint (and forming the outer layer of the fibrous capsule); tendons are collagen-fibre connective tissue at muscle ends attaching muscle to bone.
Tetany vs tetanus: Tetany is increased muscle tone and overactive nerves causing involuntary contractions/spasms (hands, feet, face, larynx), most commonly from hypocalcaemia (low blood calcium); tetanus is a severe bacterial infection by Clostridium tetani whose toxin affects the nervous system causing muscle stiffness and spasms, mainly of jaw and neck, and is more serious and potentially life-threatening.
Bones are connective tissue reinforced with calcium and specialized bone cells. The surface is covered by the tough periosteum membrane. Beneath it lies thick, hard compact bone, making up most bone tissue, whose basic units are Haversian systems: concentric lamellae of mineralized matrix (collagen fibres + needle-shaped calcium phosphate crystals — crystals rigid but brittle, collagen flexible but weak, so bone is both strong and flexible); lacunae between lamellae housing mature osteocytes, connected to each other and to the Haversian canal by canaliculi; and the central Haversian canal containing blood vessels, nerves and lymphatic vessels, with perpendicular channels connecting canals to each other and to the periosteum. Collagen fibres anchor the periosteum to the bone. Beneath compact bone is spongy bone — a light, strong latticework of bony spikes. The broad ends of a bone are the epiphysis and the middle shaft is the diaphysis. Many bones contain marrow: red marrow (spongy bone, ends of long bones, ribs, vertebrae, sternum, pelvis) producing red blood cells, platelets and white blood cells; yellow marrow (long-bone shafts) mostly fat, an energy reserve convertible to red marrow after severe blood loss. Bones are moist, living tissues, under 20% of body mass.
Cartilage is surrounded by perichondrium — a connective-tissue layer containing blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves supplying the tissue. Inside is the cartilage matrix of collagen, elastin, proteoglycans and other fibres, giving strength, flexibility and compression resistance. Unlike other connective tissues there are no blood vessels inside the matrix, so cartilage cells are supplied by diffusion and cartilage heals very slowly. Its cells, chondrocytes, sit in small spaces (lacunae) in the matrix and synthesize and maintain it. The three types are: hyaline cartilage — the commonest, in the nose, trachea and articulating surfaces of bones in joints; fibrocartilage — in high-stress, high-tension areas such as intervertebral discs and the pubic symphysis; elastic cartilage — in the external ear and epiglottis.
Dislocation: Cause — bones of a joint forced out of normal positions by sudden impact or trauma (rheumatoid arthritis can also cause it); a severe dislocation can tear muscles, ligaments and tendons. Symptoms — swelling, intense pain, immobility of the affected joint.
Spondylosis: Cause — degeneration of vertebrae, intervertebral discs, ligaments or cartilage of the vertebral column, most commonly natural degeneration of intervertebral discs; also aging, genetic factors, trauma, prolonged poor posture and obesity; it narrows and fuses discs and grows bone outgrowths pressing on nerves or spinal cord. Symptoms — back or neck pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion; commonest in lumbar (lower back) and cervical (neck) regions.
Sciatica: Cause — compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve (lower back → buttocks → each leg), often by a herniated or bulging disc pressing on it; also trauma, infection, inflammation and spondylosis. Symptoms — pain and discomfort in lower back, buttocks, legs and feet; tingling and numbness in legs and feet; weakness or difficulty moving legs and feet.
Arthritis covers different inflammatory conditions of joints; all types share joint pain and stiffness, plus redness, warmth and swelling in affected joints. Osteoarthritis (commonest): the articular cartilage at bone ends in joints gradually softens and disintegrates; it affects knee, hip and intervertebral joints. Rheumatoid arthritis: an autoimmune disorder in which the synovial membrane becomes inflamed; most commonly wrist and hands are involved. Gouty arthritis (gout): build-up of uric acid in blood forming crystals in joints and causing inflammation; the big toe joint is commonest, with knees, wrists and fingers also affected.
⚠️ Honest note on "treatments": the book gives causes and symptoms for these three types but no specific arthritis treatment passage, so no treatment is invented here. The book's treatment passages in this chapter are for joint injuries (dislocation/sprain first aid: immobilize, ice, elevate, seek medical attention, call 1122) and for muscle disorders (fatigue improves with rest; cramps relieved by gentle stretching, massage, heat or cold, pain-relieving medicines; tetany treated according to the underlying cause, e.g. calcium or magnesium supplements or intravenous fluids for salt imbalances).
Skeletal muscles move body parts (limbs, trunk, face); their fibres are elongated cells with striations, and their contractions are usually consciously controlled — voluntary muscles. Smooth muscles are in the walls of the stomach, intestines, blood vessels and other internal organs; their fibres are spindle-shaped, single-nucleus, unstriated cells surrounded by connective tissue, and most of their movements cannot be consciously controlled — involuntary muscles. Cardiac muscles are found only in the heart walls; their fibres branch extensively, are striated like skeletal muscle, but each cell usually has one nucleus near its centre, and they are involuntary. Summary table: appearance — regular striped / un-striped / irregular striped; cell shape — spindle or cylindrical / spindle / branched; nuclei — many / one / one; control — usually voluntary / usually none / none; function — move the skeleton / move substances through hollow organs / pump blood.
Skeletal muscles are groups of muscle-fibre cells in bundles enclosed by collagen fibres and connective tissue, ending in tendons that attach muscle to bone. Each fibre is a cylindrical, multinucleated cell enclosed by the sarcolemma (plasma membrane); its cytoplasm is the sarcoplasm, containing the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). The sarcolemma penetrates deep into the cell as transverse tubules (T-tubules) reaching the ends of the SR. Each fibre contains bundles of 4 to 20 elongated threadlike myofibrils, made of thick myosin filaments (dark A-bands) and thin actin filaments (light I-bands); alternating bands give the striated appearance. Thin actin filaments attach to protein discs, the Z-lines; the section between two Z-lines is a sarcomere, the smallest unit of contraction. Within it, thin filaments extend from the Z-line toward the centre and overlap the thick filaments (the overlap creates the A-band); the A-band's lighter central region with no overlap is the H-band, whose centre may carry the M line stabilizing thick filaments. During contraction thin filaments slide deeper into the A-band, the H-band and I-band narrow, A-bands are pulled closer, and the muscle shortens.
A muscle contracts when thin myofilaments slide past thick myofilaments so they overlap more. Step 1 — Relaxed state: sarcomeres are at normal length; myosin heads are not bound to actin because tropomyosin blocks the binding sites; troponin is attached to tropomyosin; myosin heads have hydrolysed ATP into ADP + Pi. (When a nerve impulse reaches the sarcolemma, acetylcholine released by the motor neuron at the synapse stimulates the sarcolemma to produce electrochemical impulses carried into the fibre to the T-tubules.) Step 2 — Arrival of nerve impulse: the impulse travels along the sarcolemma to the T-tubules and then to the SR, which releases calcium ions into the cytosol; calcium binds troponin, shifting tropomyosin away from the myosin-binding sites on actin. Step 3 — Cross-bridges and power stroke: exposed sites let myosin heads bind actin, forming cross-bridges; heads release ADP + Pi, change shape and bend toward the sarcomere centre, pulling actin with them — the power stroke — shortening the sarcomere as Z-lines come closer and the H-zone disappears; this happens simultaneously in all sarcomeres, and adjacent A-bands come closer but do not shorten. Step 4 — Separation: the myosin head receives a new ATP molecule and detaches from actin; splitting that ATP into ADP + Pi resets the head, and the cross-bridge cycle can begin again. After death cells cannot produce ATP, so cross-bridges cannot be broken — the stiffness of death, rigor mortis; a living cell always has enough ATP for detachment. The filaments: thick myofilaments (~16 nm) are many myosin proteins, each two intertwined chains ending in a globular head that connects to actin during contraction; thin myofilaments (7–8 nm) are an actin core of two twisted strands, wrapped by two tropomyosin strands (stiffening it, blocking sites when relaxed), with troponin at regular intervals (three parts: actin-binding inhibitory, tropomyosin-binding, calcium-binding).
The knee joint is between the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia and fibula (lower leg bones). Flexion (bending) of the lower leg is carried out by the hamstrings — three muscles at the back of the thigh, originating at the pelvic girdle and top of the femur, inserting at the upper fibula and tibia. Extension (straightening) is carried out by the quadriceps — four muscles at the front of the thigh, originating at the ilium (part of the pelvic girdle) and femur, inserting at the patella (kneecap) and tibia. When the hamstrings contract, the lower leg bends and the quadriceps relax; when the quadriceps contract, the lower leg straightens and the hamstrings relax. This is the antagonistic arrangement: muscles work in pairs producing opposing actions, one contracting while the other relaxes, because a muscle can only pull, never push.
In this guide-book format the diagram is the labelled sarcomere figure in section 12.10 (relaxed vs contracted sarcomere), and the same description as Short Q14 applies: two Z-lines (protein discs) at the ends — the section between them is one sarcomere, the smallest unit of contraction; thin actin filaments attached to the Z-lines extending toward the centre, forming the light I-bands at the ends; thick myosin filaments in the middle, forming the dark A-band; the overlap region of thick and thin filaments (the A-band); the lighter central region of the A-band with no overlap — the H-band (H-zone) — with the M line at its centre stabilizing the thick filaments. During contraction the actin filaments slide deeper into the A-band, the H-band and I-band narrow, the Z-lines come closer and the sarcomere shortens, while the filaments themselves do not shorten.
Muscle fatigue — a decline in muscle performance after prolonged or intense activity or due to disease. Causes: ATP supply depleted during exercise so the muscle can no longer contract; metabolic wastes produced as muscles work (lactate, hydrogen ions, reactive oxygen species); repeatedly activated fibres unable to handle calcium ions effectively; small damage to muscle fibres from prolonged or intense exercise causing inflammation and reduced function. Symptoms: pain, decreased muscle strength, reduced endurance; typically improves with rest, and severe cases require medical attention.
Muscle cramps — sudden, involuntary, often painful contractions of a muscle or group of muscles, lasting seconds to several minutes, most commonly in legs and feet. Causes: dehydration, salt imbalance, overuse or injury of the muscle, certain medications (like diuretics), and medical conditions such as diabetes, liver disease and nerve damage. Relief: gently stretching and massaging the affected muscle, applying heat or cold, and pain-relieving medications can help.
Tetany — involuntary muscle contractions or spasms due to increased muscle tone and hyperexcitability of nerves, occurring in hands, feet, face and larynx. Most common cause: hypocalcaemia (low blood calcium), possibly from vitamin D deficiency, renal failure or thyroid disorders; also other salt imbalances such as low magnesium in blood. Treatment depends on the underlying cause; for salt imbalances it may involve calcium or magnesium supplements or intravenous fluids to restore electrolyte balance.
The skeleton works like rods and levers. Bones act as rods: they give structure and support and protect the internal organs. Joints serve as fulcrums (pivot points) for levers, allowing movement. Muscles generate the effort or force, while the weight or resistance being moved is the load. Example: when lifting a weight, the bicep muscle in the upper arm acts as a lever, the elbow joint is the fulcrum, the bicep provides the effort, and the weight is the load. So the skeleton's functions — support, protection and movement — are exactly the functions of a rod-and-lever system: rigid rods held at pivot points and moved by applied effort against a load.
Muscle fibres are designed to contract and shorten, pulling on tendons and moving bones. When a muscle contracts, it pulls a bone via a tendon; when it relaxes, the bone moves back to its original position. Muscles cannot push because they only generate force by pulling. If a muscle were to push, it would need to be attached to bones at both ends and make both ends move closer together, which is not possible in the body; muscles are usually attached to a bone at only one end. That is also why muscles must work in antagonistic pairs: one muscle pulls a bone one way, and its partner pulls it back the other way.
In bones, calcium is the mineral reinforcement: compact bone's lamellae are mineralized matrix containing small needle-shaped crystals of calcium phosphate, and it is those crystals — rigid but brittle, balanced by flexible collagen — that give bone its great strength. The bone cells themselves regulate calcium: osteocytes regulate calcium release from bone tissue to blood, and osteoclasts break down bone releasing calcium and phosphate into blood. In muscle contraction, calcium is the trigger: the nerve impulse reaches the sarcoplasmic reticulum, which releases calcium ions into the cytosol; calcium binds troponin, shifting tropomyosin away from the myosin-binding sites on actin, so cross-bridges can form and the power stroke can happen. That is why low blood calcium (hypocalcaemia) causes tetany — nerves become hyperexcitable and muscles spasm involuntarily. So the same mineral builds the skeleton's strength and switches contraction on.
A single solid structure could support and protect, but it could not move — and the chapter shows the skeleton must do both. Rigid bones give the framework: structure, support, protection of vital organs, and levers for muscles to pull on (rods and levers). Flexible joints between them make movement possible in controlled amounts: freely moveable synovial joints (ball-and-socket, hinge, pivot, ellipsoidal, saddle, gliding) give the wide range of motion, slightly moveable cartilaginous joints give a little give (intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis), and immoveable fibrous joints lock parts that must not move (skull sutures). The bipedal adaptations show the same balance: the S-shaped vertebral curve, the longitudinal foot arch and the angled femur all combine rigidity with controlled flexibility so weight is distributed, shock absorbed and balance kept. A single solid skeleton would be unable to walk, bend, grip or absorb shock at all.
Because muscles can only pull, never push. A muscle fibre contracts and shortens, pulling a bone via its tendon; when it relaxes, the bone simply moves back — but to move a bone actively in the opposite direction, another muscle must pull it the other way. That is the antagonistic arrangement: at a joint, one muscle (flexor) contracts to bend the bone while its partner (extensor) relaxes, and then the extensor contracts to straighten it while the flexor relaxes. The knee shows it exactly: hamstrings contract to bend the lower leg while quadriceps relax; quadriceps contract to straighten it while hamstrings relax. A single muscle alone could only ever pull a joint one way and could never return it under its own power.
Both follow from the book's mechanisms of use and remodelling. Bones are maintained by continuous remodelling — osteoclasts breaking down old bone and osteoblasts forming new bone — and bone health depends on weight-bearing exercise: the chapter lists lack of weight-bearing exercise among the causes of osteoporosis, because without loading, bone mass falls and bones become fragile and porous. Muscles likewise depend on use: they contract using ATP, and their performance depends on repeated activation, calcium handling and intact fibres; prolonged inactivity removes the stimulus that keeps fibres strong, so performance declines — the same decline the chapter calls muscle fatigue when it follows prolonged or intense activity, but here from disuse rather than overuse. In space travel there is no weight to bear at all, so both systems lose their loading stimulus at once: bones weaken (like osteoporosis) and muscles shrink and weaken (atrophy) together.
This chapter is in two halves: the skeleton (bones, cartilage, joints and their disorders) and the muscles (three types, the ultrastructure of skeletal muscle, and the sliding filament model of contraction). The skeleton's 206 bones divide into the axial skeleton (skull 22, middle-ear ossicles 6, hyoid 1, vertebral column 33, rib cage 24 + sternum) and the appendicular skeleton (pectoral girdle, forelimbs 30 each, pelvic girdle, hindlimbs 30 each). Bone is built by osteoblasts, maintained by osteocytes and resorbed by osteoclasts; its Haversian systems (lamellae + lacunae + central canal) and spongy bone make it strong yet flexible, while cartilage — fed only by diffusion, with no blood vessels inside — heals very slowly. Joints run from immoveable (fibrous) through slightly moveable (cartilaginous) to freely moveable (synovial, six types), and their disorders (disc slip, spondylosis, sciatica, arthritis, osteoporosis) and injuries (dislocation, sprain, first aid) are all about what happens when that design fails. Then muscles: skeletal (voluntary, striated), smooth (involuntary, unstriated) and cardiac (involuntary, striated, heart only); the sarcomere between two Z-lines is the unit of contraction, and the sliding filament model — calcium from the SR, troponin shifting tropomyosin, cross-bridges, power stroke, ATP detachment — explains how it shortens, with antagonistic pairs (hamstrings vs quadriceps at the knee) doing the actual moving, because muscles pull but never push.
Topics in this chapter:
Revision guidance: Memorize the counts first — 206 bones, 33 vertebrae (7+12+5+5+4), rib types (1–7 true, 8–10 false, 11–12 floating), forelimb/hindlimb 30 each, six synovial joint types with one example each, and the three muscle types' table (striation, nuclei, control). Then master the two mechanisms that carry the most marks: the sliding filament model in four steps (relaxed → calcium → cross-bridge/power stroke → ATP detachment) and the antagonistic knee pair. Finally, practise the differentiate questions — compact vs spongy, axial vs appendicular, the three arthritis types, tetany vs tetanus — because they are the chapter's favourite exam format. Do the official exercise (12 MCQs, 15 short, 12 long, 4 inquisitive) without looking at the answers first.
