ENGLISH

The periodic table is called the “Symbol of Chemistry”. The modern table holds 118 elements, arranged in tabular form by atomic number. Many elements — gold, silver, iron, phosphorus, sulfur, zinc and arsenic — were known since prehistoric times, but the first real classification came in the 18th century.

  • Antoine Lavoisier attempted to classify the known elements into metals and nonmetals.
  • Döbereiner (1829) grouped elements into triads — groups of three with similar properties — noting that the atomic weight of the middle element was roughly the average of the other two. Example: lithium, sodium, potassium (7Li, 23Na, 39K).
  • John Newlands (1864) was the first to observe periodicity: arranging the 62 known elements in increasing order of atomic masses, he found that every eighth element resembled the first in properties.
  • Lothar Meyer plotted atomic weight against atomic volumes in the same year; the curves also showed periodicity.
  • Dmitri Mendeleev (1869), the father of the Periodic Table, arranged 63 elements by increasing atomic mass, aligning similar properties into groups — and left gaps for undiscovered elements, predicting their masses and properties accurately. When those elements were found, his predictions proved correct.
  • Moseley (1913) determined exact atomic numbers using X-ray emission and removed the flaws of Mendeleev's table by arranging elements by atomic number instead of atomic mass. The Periodic Law was modified to: “the properties of elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers.”

1.2 — Modern Periodic Table: Main Features۱.
🏷 Tags: 118 elements, periods, groups, valence electrons, atomic number, gradual change
ENGLISH

The modern periodic table makes the properties of elements easier to understand. Its main features are:

  • 118 elements are grouped in ascending order of atomic number.
  • There are seven horizontal rows called periods and eighteen vertical columns called groups. (In older versions there were eight vertical groups, divided into A-Groups and B-Groups.)
  • Elements in the same group show similar chemical properties because they have the same number of valence electrons. Their physical properties, however, change gradually from top to bottom in a group.
  • Elements in a period show a gradual change in properties moving from left to right.
  • Other ways of grouping — blocks, families and categories — give further understanding of the elements.

Remember the rule of thumb: down a group = similar chemistry, slowly changing physics; across a period = gradual change in everything.

🏷 Tags: metals lose electrons, nonmetals gain electrons, metalloids, stair-step line, boron, polonium, hydrogen exception
ENGLISH

Elements are broadly classified into three kinds:

  • Metals tend to lose electrons to form positive ions. Examples: iron, copper, gold, silver.
  • Nonmetals tend to gain electrons to form negative ions. Examples: chlorine, sulfur, phosphorus.
  • Metalloids separate the metals from the nonmetals and show some properties of metals and some of nonmetals.

Most periodic tables show a “stair-step line”. The line begins at boron (B) and extends down to polonium (Po), including Si, Ge, As, Sb and Te. Elements to the left of the line are metals; elements just to the right of the line show properties of both metals and nonmetals and are called metalloids or semimetals; elements far to the right are nonmetals. The exception is hydrogen, the first element on the table.

ENGLISH

Elements can be classified by the subshell containing their valence electrons:

  • The valence electrons of the elements in the first two groups are in the “s” subshell — these are s-block elements.
  • Transition elements belong to the d-block.
  • The elements in the two series at the bottom of the table — the Lanthanides and Actinides — are f-block elements.
  • The remaining elements, in groups 13 to 18 including the inert gases in the last group, belong to the p-block.

Knowing the block an element belongs to tells us about its characteristics, chemical reactivity, oxidation states, electronegativity, ionization energy and electron filling.

1.5 — Families in the Periodic Table۱.
🏷 Tags: alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, chalcogens, halogens, noble gases, variable oxidation states
ENGLISH

An element family is a set of elements sharing common properties. There are five famous families:

  • i) Alkali metals — Group 1 (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr): they produce alkalis when they react with water, have one valence electron, and are the most reactive metals.
  • ii) Alkaline earth metals — Group 2 (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra): metals found mainly in the earth, forming alkalis; they have two valence-shell electrons and are less reactive than alkali metals.
  • iii) Transition metals: the largest family, in the middle of the table — four series of d-block elements plus the lanthanides and actinides below. Examples: Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn. They show variable oxidation states and mostly form coloured compounds.
  • iv) Chalcogens — Group 16 (O, S, Se, Te, Po, Lv): named because most copper ores (Greek chalkos) are oxides or sulfides. Oxygen and sulfur are nonmetals, Se, Te and Po are metalloids, and livermorium is a metal.
  • v) Halogens — Group 17 (F, Cl, Br, I, At, Ts): “salt-formers” — they react easily with alkali and alkaline earth metals to form salts. They are highly reactive nonmetals with high electron affinities and need only one electron to complete their outermost shell.
  • vi) Noble gases — Group 18 (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn, Og): unreactive elements at the extreme right. Due to their complete outermost shells, they are almost entirely unreactive under normal conditions and rarely form compounds.

📌 Keep ان Mind (کتاب کا note): Although noble gases are unreactive, they have some compounds — for example, xenon hexafluoroplatinate (XePtF6). That is why the old word “inert gases” was changed to “noble gases”.

1.6 — Periodic Arrangement and Electronic Configuration۱.
🏷 Tags: period number, shell number, group number, valence electrons, magnesium, aluminium, configuration from position
ENGLISH

An element's position tells us its electronic structure:

  • Period number = shell number (n) — the number of electron shells around the nucleus. For example, an element X in the 3rd period has three electron shells, with its valence electrons in the 3rd shell. Which subshell holds them depends on the element's block: if X in the 3rd period is in the s-block, its valence electrons are in the 3s subshell.
  • Group number = number of valence electrons. For example, an element X in the 3rd period and group 2 has two valence electrons in its outermost shell. So X (3rd period, group 2, s-block) has two valence electrons in the 3s subshell — that is magnesium (Mg).
  • Another example: X belongs to group 13 and period 3 — it has 3 valence electrons and 3 shells. Its configuration is: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p1 — aluminium (Al).

So the table works both ways: from position you can deduce configuration, and from configuration you can find the position.

MgShell 1: 2 e⁻Shell 2: 8 e⁻Shell 3: 2 e⁻ (3s²)Period 3, Group 2
Mg samjho: period 3 = 3 shells, group 2 = 2 valence electrons — 2, 8, 2.
1.7.1 — Atomic Radius۱.۷. (Atomic Radius)
🏷 Tags: atomic radius, picometer, angstrom, nuclear charge, shielding, across a period, down a group
ENGLISH

The atomic radius measures the size of an atom: it is half the distance between two identical atoms bonded together. It can vary with the type of bond (covalent, metallic, van der Waals) and the state of the atom, and is typically measured in picometer (pm) or Angstrom (Å).

Factors affecting atomic radius: number of shells, effective nuclear charge, and the shielding effect of inner electrons.

Periodic trends:

  • Across a period (left → right), atomic radius decreases because increasing nuclear charge pulls the electron cloud closer.
  • Down a group (top → bottom), atomic radius increases because additional electron shells are added, so more shielding makes the atom larger despite the increase in nuclear charge (which is outweighed).

Across a period → radius DECREASESDown a group ↓ radius INCREASES (more shells)
1.7.2 — Ionic Radius۱.۷. (Ionic Radius)
🏷 Tags: ionic radius, cation smaller, anion larger, electron repulsion, crystal lattice, isoelectronic
ENGLISH

The ionic radius measures the size of an ion in a crystal lattice: the distance from the nucleus of an ion to its outermost electron shell, measured in pm or Å.

  • When an atom loses electrons to become a positive ion (cation), it generally becomes smaller than the neutral atom — the loss of an electronic shell and stronger pull of the nucleus on the remaining electrons.
  • When an atom gains electrons to become a negative ion (anion), it generally becomes larger than the neutral atom — added electrons increase electron repulsion, so the electron cloud expands.

Trends: Moving across a period left to right, the ionic radius of cations decreases (increasing nuclear charge pulls electrons closer) and anions also decrease across a period for the same reason. Moving down a group, both cations and anions increase in size because the shell number (n) increases, so the distance between nucleus and outermost electrons grows, outweighing the increased nuclear charge. Book values include: Li+ 60 pm (atom 152), Na+ 95 (186), K+ 133 (231), Mg2+ 65 (160), Ca2+ 99 (197), Al3+ 50 (143), F− 136 (64), Cl− 181 (99), O2− 140 (66), S2− 184 (104).

1.7.3 — Ionization Energy۱.۷.
🏷 Tags: ionization energy, first second third, nuclear charge, atomic size, half-filled, shielding, spin-pair repulsion, noble gases highest, alkali metals lowest
ENGLISH

First ionization energy (ΔHi1) is “the energy needed to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of atoms of the element in the gaseous state to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions.”

Na(g) → Na+(g) + e−   ΔHi1 = 494 kJ mol−1
Ca(g) → Ca+(g) + e−   ΔHi1 = 590 kJ mol−1
Ca+(g) → Ca2+(g) + e−   ΔHi2 = 1150 kJ mol−1
Ca2+(g) → Ca3+(g) + e−   ΔHi3 = 4940 kJ mol−1

An element can have as many ionization energies as its atomic number. Factors affecting ionization energy:

  • i) Nuclear charge: greater effective nuclear charge → stronger attraction → harder to remove an electron → higher ionization energy.
  • ii) Size of atom or ion: in bigger atoms the attraction between nucleus and outermost electrons is weaker → ionization energy decreases as size increases.
  • iii) Electronic arrangement: half-filled and completely-filled orbitals are stable, so ionization energy is higher when the electron is removed from a fully-filled or half-filled subshell. (a) Noble gases have the highest ionization energies in their periods due to highly stable fully-filled shells (ns2 np6). (b) Oxygen has lower ionization energy than nitrogen due to the half-filled subshell of nitrogen: 7N = 1s2 2s2 2px1 2py1 2pz1 (more stable), ΔHi1 = 1403 kJ mol−1; 8O = 1s2 2s2 2px2 2py1 2pz1 (less stable), ΔHi1 = 1365 kJ mol−1.
  • iv) Shielding effect: greater shielding → easier to remove valence electrons → lower ionization energy.
  • v) Spin-pair repulsion: when electrons are spin-paired in the same orbital, repulsion makes removal slightly easier. Manganese (Mn) has two spin-paired electrons in its 4s orbital, so its ionization energy is relatively lower; chromium (Cr) has one unpaired electron in 4s, so removing it needs more energy (no spin-pairing repulsion). 24Cr = [Ar] 3d54s1 (more stable); 25Mn = [Ar] 3d54s2 (less stable).

Periodic trends: Going down a group, ionization energy decreases (atomic size and shielding increase). In Group 1: Li > Na > K > Rb > Cs. Moving across a period left to right, ionization energy increases (shells unchanged, effective nuclear charge increases). Noble gases have the highest values in a period and alkali metals the lowest.

Na(g) → Na+(g) + e−   ΔHi1 = 494 kJ mol−1
Ca(g) → Ca+(g) + e−   ΔHi1 = 590 kJ mol−1
Ca+(g) → Ca2+(g) + e−   ΔHi2 = 1150 kJ mol−1
Ca2+(g) → Ca3+(g) + e−   ΔHi3 = 4940 kJ mol−1

Ne (peak)Li (low) → across period → noble gas (high)Ar (peak)

ENGLISH

First electron affinity (ΔHoea1) is the enthalpy change when 1 mole of electrons is added to 1 mole of gaseous atoms to form 1 mole of gaseous uni-negative ions under standard conditions.

Cl(g) + e− → Cl−(g)   ΔHoea1 = −348.8 kJ mol−1. Energy is released, so the first electron affinity carries a negative sign.

Second electron affinity (ΔHoea2) is the energy required to add electrons to 1 mole of uni-negative gaseous ions to form 1 mole of gaseous −2 ions. For oxygen, the first addition releases energy (ΔHoea1 = −142 kJ mol−1), but adding a second electron to the negative O− ion needs 844 kJ mol−1 because the negatively charged ion repels the incoming electron: O−(g) + e− → O2−(g), ΔHoea2 = +844 kJ mol−1.

Factors affecting electron affinity: (i) Size of atom — smaller atom → stronger nuclear attraction for the incoming electron → greater electron affinity. (ii) Nuclear charge — greater nuclear charge → stronger attraction → greater electron affinity. (iii) Electronic configuration — electron affinity is low when the electron is added to a half-filled subshell rather than a partially filled one. The values for nitrogen and phosphorus (group 15) are very low because of their half-filled “np” subshells in the valence shell (N = 2s2 2p3, P = 3s2 3p3); these very stable half-filled p-subshells have very little tendency to accept an extra electron.

Periodic trends: As atomic size increases down a group, the incoming electron feels less attraction, so electron affinity generally decreases down the group — observed in halogens (At < I < Br < Cl < F). Electron affinities become more negative as we move left to right in a period, firstly due to increased nuclear charge and secondly due to decreasing atomic radius.

At < I < Br < Cl < F۔ پیریڈ میں بائیں سے دائیں زیادہ منفی ہوتی ہے (نیوکلیئر چارج بڑھتا ہے، رداس گھٹتا ہے)۔ کتاب کی جدول 1.1: گروپ 17 — F −328.0، Cl −349.0، Br −324.0، I −295.0، At −270.1؛ گروپ 1 — Li −60.0، Na −53.0، K −48.0، Rb −47.0، Cs −46.0 kJ mol−1۔

1.7.5 — Electronegativity۱.۷.
🏷 Tags: electronegativity, Pauling scale, fluorine 4.0, alkali metals minimum, metals electropositive, nonmetals electronegative
ENGLISH

Electronegativity is the power of an atom to attract the shared pair of electrons toward itself in a molecule. Linus Pauling developed a scale of dimensionless electronegativity values. On this scale, alkali metals have minimum electronegativity (0.8) and halogens have maximum values (F = 4.0).

Factors affecting electronegativity: (i) Atomic size — a larger atomic size gives a lower electronegativity, because electrons far from the nucleus feel a weaker force of attraction. (ii) Effective nuclear charge — a higher effective nuclear charge gives a greater electronegativity, because increased nuclear charge attracts bonded electrons more strongly. This is why electronegativity increases across a period from left to right: Li in period 2 is 1.0 and F is 4.0.

Periodic trends: Moving left to right along a period, electronegativity increases (increasing nuclear charge, decreasing size). In groups it decreases from top to bottom (increasing size and shielding). For example, in the halogen group, electronegativity decreases from fluorine (4.0) to iodine (2.5).

Normally, metals on the left side of the table have lower electronegativity values than nonmetals. Hence, metals are electropositive and nonmetals are electronegative, relatively.

📌 Did You Know (کتاب کا note): Linus Pauling is the only person to have received two unshared Nobel Prizes — one for chemistry in 1954 for his work on the nature of the chemical bond, and one for peace in 1962 for his opposition to weapons of mass destruction.

1.7.6 — Variation in Metallic Character۱.۷.
🏷 Tags: metallic character, lose electrons, nonmetallic character, cesium most reactive, valence shell configuration
ENGLISH

The metallic character of elements is typically their tendency to lose electrons. Elements on the left side of the table have a greater tendency to lose their outermost electrons to achieve noble gas configuration. Elements on the right side tend to gain electrons. So the metallic character of an element depends largely on its valence shell electronic configuration.

Consequently, metallic character decreases across a period from left to right: increasing nuclear charge pulls the electron cloud closer to the nucleus, making it more difficult to lose electrons; also, across the period the nuclear charge increases while atomic size decreases, strengthening attraction to valence electrons. Contrarily, metallic character increases down a group because atomic size and shielding increase, reducing nuclear attraction on valence electrons. The increase in metallic character (ease of losing electrons) makes the element more reactive — hence cesium is far more reactive and electropositive than sodium or lithium.

1.8.1 With Water: Sodium is more reactive than magnesium towards water. Na reacts vigorously with water to form sodium hydroxide and hydrogen, while Mg reacts more slowly to form magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen. However, magnesium reacts with steam more vigorously to make magnesium oxide and hydrogen gas.

2Na(s) + 2H2O(l) → 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g)
Mg(s) + 2H2O(l) → Mg(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)
Mg(s) + 2H2O(g) → MgO(s) + 2H2(g)

1.8.2 With Oxygen: Sodium burns in oxygen with a golden yellow flame to produce a white solid mixture of sodium oxide and sodium peroxide. Sodium is kept under kerosene oil to prevent its reaction with air. It reacts vigorously with oxygen in open air to form peroxide: 2Na(s) + O2(g) → Na2O2(s). Under special conditions like limited O2 or high temperature, sodium oxide is formed: 4Na(s) + O2(g) → 2Na2O(s). Magnesium burns in oxygen with an intense white flame to give white solid magnesium oxide: 2Mg(s) + O2(g) → 2MgO(s).

1.8.3 With Chlorine: Chlorine reacts with both metals to give soluble salts. It reacts exothermically with sodium, with a golden yellow flame, to give white solid sodium chloride; magnesium also reacts with chlorine to give white solid magnesium chloride.

🏷 Tags: period 3 oxides, ionic character, covalent character, basic oxides, acidic oxides, amphoteric oxides, aluminium oxide
ENGLISH

1.9 Trends in bonding: Oxides of groups 1, 2 and 3 (e.g. Na2O) have more ionic character — they exist as giant ionic lattices with strong electrostatic forces between oppositely charged ions. Oxides of groups 4, 5, 6 and 7 (e.g. SO2) are more covalent — they exist as covalent molecules with weak intermolecular forces. This transition is a result of increasing electronegativity and decreasing ionic character. Similarly, chlorides of groups 1, 2 and 3 (e.g. NaCl) are predominantly ionic, while chlorides of groups 4, 5, 6 and 7 (e.g. PCl3) are covalent; covalent character increases due to decrease in electronegativity difference between the halogen and the other atom.

1.9.1 Classification of oxides: Oxides are binary compounds formed by the reaction of oxygen with other elements, classified as neutral, amphoteric, basic or acidic by their characteristics.

  • i) Basic oxides: an oxide that when combined with water gives off an alkali. Metals react with oxygen to give basic oxides, usually ionic. Group 1 and 2 form basic oxides when they react with oxygen. Examples: Na2O, CaO, BaO. Group 2 hydroxides' solubility increases down the group, so alkalinity also increases down the group.
    Na2O(s) + H2O(l) → 2NaOH(aq)
    CaO(s) + H2O(l) → Ca(OH)2(aq)
  • ii) Acidic oxides: an oxide that when combined with water gives an acid. Nonmetals react with oxygen to form acidic oxides held together by covalent bonds. Silicon dioxide is an acidic oxide as it can react with bases. Examples in period 3: P2O3, P2O5, SO3, SO2.
    P2O5(s) + H2O(l) → H3PO4(aq)
    SO2(g) + H2O(l) → H2SO3(aq)
    Reactions with bases: SiO2(s) + 2NaOH(aq) → Na2SiO3(aq) + H2O(l); P2O5(s) + 6NaOH(aq) → 2Na3PO4(aq) + 3H2O(l); SO2(g) + 2NaOH(aq) → Na2SO3(aq) + H2O(l)
  • iii) Amphoteric oxides: oxides that can react with both acids and bases — they can behave as either an acid or a base depending on conditions. Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) is insoluble in water but reacts with hydrochloric acid to form aluminium chloride and water, and with sodium hydroxide to form sodium aluminate and water.
    Al2O3(s) + 6HCl(aq) → 2AlCl3(s) + 3H2O(l)
    Al2O3(s) + 2NaOH(aq) → 2NaAlO2(s) + H2O(l)

    Al2O3 + 6HCl → 2AlCl3 + 3H2O؛ Al2O3 + 2NaOH → 2NaAlO2 + H2O

1.9.2 Classification of chlorides: Chlorine forms compounds with other elements known as chlorides. These show characteristic behaviour when added to water, resulting in solutions that can be acidic or neutral.

  • i) Neutral chlorides: salts that, when dissolved in water, produce a neutral solution with a pH close to 7. At the start of period 3, sodium and magnesium chlorides do not react with water. The solutions contain positive metal ions and negative chloride ions surrounded by water molecules — now known as hydrated ions; this process is hydration.
    NaCl(s) → Na+(aq) + Cl−(aq)   (pH = 7)
    MgCl2(s) → Mg2+(aq) + 2Cl−(aq)   (pH = 6.5)
Group 1 and group 2 chlorides are also neutral, with few exceptions.
  • ii) Acidic chlorides: If we move in period 3, from aluminium to sulfur, all chlorides react with water to make an acidic solution with pH less than 7 — this process is called hydrolysis. When AlCl3 is added to water, aluminium and chloride ions are in solution. Al3+ ion is hydrated and causes a water molecule to lose an H+ ion, making the solution acidic.
    AlCl3(s) + 3H2O(l) → Al(OH)3(s) + 3HCl(aq)
    Other examples: SiCl4(l) + 2H2O(l) → SiO2(s) + 4HCl(aq); PCl3(l) + 3H2O(l) → H3PO3(s) + 3HCl(aq)

1.10 Variation in oxidation number in oxides and chlorides: The oxidation number of an atom is the formal charge on that atom in a molecule or ion (also called oxidation state). In ionic compounds, an atom's oxidation number is the charge it appears to have. The oxidation number of an element of the 3rd period in its oxide or chloride corresponds to the number of electrons used for bonding and is always positive, because oxygen and chlorine are more electronegative than any of these elements. It matches the group number, reflecting the total number of valence electrons.

Book Table 1.2 — oxides: Na in Na2O +1, Mg in MgO +2, Al in Al2O3 +3, Si in SiO2 +4, P in P4O10/P2O5 +5/+3, S in SO3 +6, S in SO2 +4; chlorides: Na in NaCl +1, Mg in MgCl2 +2, Al in AlCl3 +3, Si in SiCl4 +4, P in PCl5 +5, P in PCl3 +3, S in SCl2 +2. In oxides the oxidation number increases from +1 in Na to +6 in S; in chlorides it increases from +1 in Na to +5 in P. Phosphorus and sulfur exhibit several oxidation numbers because they can expand their octet by exciting electrons into empty 3d orbitals — for instance, in SO2 sulfur has +4 because only four electrons are used for bonding, while in SO3 sulfur has +6 because all six electrons are used for bonding.

    AlCl3 + 3H2O → Al(OH)3 + 3HCl؛ SiCl4 + 2H2O → SiO2 + 4HCl؛ PCl3 + 3H2O → H3PO3 + 3HCl

  • (b) L. Meyer
  • (c) J. W. Döbereiner
  • (d) D. I. Mendeleev
Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) J. Newlands — In 1864 Newlands, arranging the 62 known elements in increasing order of atomic masses, first observed that every eighth element resembled the first in properties.

II. Recognize the element if it has 3 electron shells, belongs to “s” block and has 2 electrons in its outer most shell.

  • (a) Calcium
  • (b) Sodium
  • (c) Magnesium ✓
  • (d) Potassium
Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Magnesium — 3 shells = period 3; s-block with 2 outer electrons = group 2; period 3, group 2 is magnesium (2, 8, 2). Calcium is period 4, sodium and potassium have only 1 outer electron.

III. Which one do you think is correct about metallic character?

  • (a) It decreases from top to bottom in a group.
  • (b) It increases from top to bottom in a group. ✓
  • (c) It remains constant from left to right in a period.
  • (d) It increases from left to right in a period.
Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) It increases from top to bottom in a group. — Down a group, size and shielding increase, so losing electrons gets easier; across a period metallic character decreases from left to right.

IV. Which property increases as you go down a group in the periodic table?

  • (a) Atomic radius ✓
  • (b) Electron Affinity
  • (c) Electronegativity
  • (d) Ionization energy
Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) Atomic radius — Down a group new shells are added, so the atom gets larger; electron affinity, electronegativity and ionization energy all generally decrease down a group.

V. Which set of the following conditions results in higher ionization energy?

  • (a) Smaller atom and greater nuclear charge. ✓
  • (b) Smaller atom and smaller nuclear charge
  • (c) larger atom and greater nuclear charge
  • (d) larger atom and the smaller nuclear charge
Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) Smaller atom and greater nuclear charge. — A small atom holds its outer electrons close, and a greater nuclear charge pulls them harder, so removing an electron needs more energy.

VI. Which of the following atoms show more than one (variable) oxidation states?

  • (a) Sodium
  • (b) Magnesium
  • (c) Aluminum
  • (d) Phosphorous ✓
Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) Phosphorous — Book Table 1.2 gives phosphorus +5 (PCl5) and +3 (PCl3), while Na is +1, Mg +2 and Al +3 only; phosphorus can expand its octet into empty 3d orbitals.

VII. Which is the correct general trend in the variation of electron affinity in a group?

  • (a) It becomes less negative from top to bottom. ✓
  • (b) It becomes more negative from top to bottom.
  • (c) It remains the same.
  • (d) It has no definite trend and changes irregularly.
Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) It becomes less negative from top to bottom. — Down a group the atom gets bigger, so the incoming electron feels less nuclear attraction; e.g. halogens F −328 → At −270 kJ mol−1.

VIII. What is the oxidation state of sulfur in the sulfate ion (SO42−)?

  • (a) + 4
  • (b) + 2
  • (c) + 6 ✓
  • (d) 0
Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) +6 — Note: the book's own table gives sulfur +6 in SO3 but has no dedicated passage for the sulfate ion itself; this answer uses the chapter's own oxidation-number rule: oxygen is −2 each (4 × −2 = −8), and the ion total is −2, so sulfur must be +6 (−8 + 6 = −2).

IX. Which is the correct trend in variation of electronegativity along a period of the periodic table?

  • (a) It decreases from left to right across a period.
  • (b) It increases from left to right across a period. ✓
  • (c) It remains constant.
  • (d) It has no definite trend.
Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) It increases from left to right across a period. — Nuclear charge increases and size decreases across a period, so attraction for shared electrons grows (e.g. period 2: Li 1.0 → F 4.0).

X. The atomic radius generally……… across a period in the periodic table.

  • (a) Increases
  • (b) Decreases ✓
  • (c) Remains constant
  • (d) First increases then decreases
Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) Decreases — Across a period, increasing nuclear charge pulls the electron cloud closer to the nucleus.

XI. Which one of the following elements has the highest ionization energy?

  • (a) Sodium (Na)
  • (b) Magnesium (Mg)
  • (c) Aluminium (Al)
  • (d) Argon (Ar) ✓
Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) Argon (Ar) — Noble gases have the highest ionization energies in their periods because of their highly stable fully-filled shells (ns2 np6); Na, Mg and Al are all before argon in period 3.

Section 2 — Short Answer Questions
SHORT + ANSWERS

Q.2 Attempt the following short-answer questions:

a) What is 1st ionization energy? Give an example.

First ionization energy (ΔHi1) is the energy needed to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of atoms of the element in the gaseous state to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions. Example: Na(g) → Na+(g) + e−, ΔHi1 = 494 kJ mol−1 (book also gives Ca: 590 kJ mol−1).

b) Explain why sulfur has a lower first ionization energy than phosphorus.

Phosphorus has the stable half-filled configuration 3s2 3p3, while sulfur is 3s2 3p4 — its fourth p electron is spin-paired in an already occupied orbital, and spin-pair repulsion makes it easier to remove. Note: the book's explicit worked comparison is nitrogen vs oxygen (N 1403, O 1365 kJ mol−1, same half-filled vs paired reasoning); the sulfur/phosphorus case follows the chapter's own half-filled-stability and spin-pair-repulsion mechanisms.

c) Why the elements in Group 13 to 17 are called p-block elements?

Because their valence electrons are in the “p” subshell — elements are classified into blocks by the subshell containing their valence electrons, and groups 13 to 18 (including the inert gases) belong to the p-block.

d) What are the factors that affect electronegativity?

The book lists two factors: (i) atomic size — a larger atomic size gives a lower electronegativity, because electrons far from the nucleus feel a weaker attraction; (ii) effective nuclear charge — a higher effective nuclear charge gives a greater electronegativity, because increased nuclear charge attracts bonded electrons more strongly.

e) What factors are responsible for the increasing reactivity of alkali metals as we move down the group?

Down Group 1, atomic size increases and shielding by inner electrons increases, so the single outer electron is held less tightly and ionization energy decreases (Li > Na > K > Rb > Cs). Losing that electron — the basis of alkali-metal reactivity and metallic character — therefore gets easier, so reactivity increases; the book notes cesium is far more reactive and electropositive than sodium or lithium.

f) Why some of the elements show variable oxidation numbers while others do not?

The oxidation number of a 3rd-period element in its oxide or chloride corresponds to the number of electrons used for bonding and matches its group number. Elements like Na, Mg and Al use only their valence electrons, so they show one fixed number (+1, +2, +3). Phosphorus and sulfur can expand their octet by exciting electrons into empty 3d orbitals, so they use different numbers of electrons for bonding — e.g. P +5/+3, S +6 in SO3 but +4 in SO2.

g) Identify the element which is in period 5 and group 15?

Antimony (Sb). Note: the book does not name this element in a dedicated passage; it is identified by the chapter's own rules — period 5 means 5 electron shells, group 15 means 5 valence electrons (5s2 5p3), which is the group-15 element of period 5, antimony (atomic number 51).

h) Why oxides of sodium and magnesium are more ionic than the oxides of nitrogen and phosphorus?

Oxides of groups 1, 2 and 3 (e.g. Na2O) have more ionic character and exist as giant ionic lattices, while oxides of groups 4–7 (e.g. SO2, and by the same trend the oxides of N and P) are more covalent molecules. Across a period, electronegativity increases and ionic character decreases, so the left-side oxides (Na, Mg) are far more ionic than the right-side oxides (N, P).

i) Give reason for the different chemical reactivities of Na and Mg toward oxygen and chlorine.

Sodium has one valence electron and a lower ionization energy (494 kJ mol−1) than the group-2 pattern shown in the book (Ca first ionization energy 590 kJ mol−1); magnesium, with two valence electrons held by a larger effective nuclear charge, likewise holds its electrons more tightly than sodium. Sodium is therefore more metallic and more reactive: it burns in oxygen with a golden yellow flame and reacts vigorously, even in open air to form peroxide, and reacts exothermically with chlorine; magnesium burns with an intense white flame to MgO and also gives MgCl2, but reacts more slowly (e.g. slowly with cold water, vigorously only with steam). The difference is the chapter's metallic-character trend: reactivity falls as ionization energy rises across a period.

j) Why the ionization energy of lithium is much lower than that of helium despite the fact that the nuclear charge of lithium is +3 and that of helium is +2?

Helium has the complete, highly stable 1s2 shell in a very small atom, so its single shell's electrons are held extremely tightly — noble gases have the highest ionization energies in their periods. Lithium's outer electron is in the 2nd shell, farther from the nucleus and shielded by the inner 1s2 electrons, so despite the +3 nuclear charge it is much easier to remove. Size, shielding and the complete-shell stability — the chapter's own factors — outweigh the bare nuclear charge here.

k) The ionization energy of Be (atomic no. 4) is higher than that of B (atomic no. 5), despite the fact that the nuclear charge of Be is +4 and that of B is +5.

Beryllium is 1s2 2s2 — its outer subshell is completely filled and therefore extra stable, so removing an electron costs more energy. Boron is 1s2 2s2 2p1 — its single 2p electron is in a higher-energy, partially filled subshell and is easier to remove. This is the book's own Quick Check 1.4(i) case: the fully-filled-subshell stability outweighs boron's larger nuclear charge.

l) What is common in Na+, Mg2+, Al3+, Ne and F−? Arrange them in increasing order of sizes.

All five are isoelectronic: each has 10 electrons with the configuration 1s2 2s2 2p6 (the neon configuration). Increasing order of size: Al3+ < Mg2+ < Na+ < Ne < F−. Reason (chapter's mechanism): with the same number of electrons, a larger nuclear charge pulls the electron cloud in more tightly — Al3+ (charge +13) is smallest, F− (charge +9, with extra electron repulsion) is largest; Ne (charge +10, neutral) sits between Na+ and F−. Book values supporting the cation part: Al3+ 50, Mg2+ 65, Na+ 95, F− 136 pm. Note: the book's figure does not give a neon radius, so Ne's position between Na+ and F− is deduced from the nuclear-charge mechanism, not quoted from the book.

m) Consider the chlorides of sodium, magnesium, and phosphorus(V): NaCl, MgCl2, and PCl5. (i) Classify each of these chlorides as acidic, basic, or neutral. (ii) For each chloride, briefly explain the reason for your classification, referring to their behavior when dissolved in water.

(i) NaCl — neutral; MgCl2 — neutral; PCl5 — acidic. (ii) NaCl and MgCl2 are group 1 and 2 chlorides: they do not react with water but simply dissolve, giving hydrated ions (hydration) — NaCl gives a solution of pH 7 and MgCl2 of pH 6.5, i.e. close to neutral, and the book classifies group 1 and 2 chlorides as neutral. PCl5 is a period-3 chloride beyond aluminium: like SiCl4 and PCl3 in the book, it undergoes hydrolysis with water, producing acid (HCl and phosphoric acid), so its solution is acidic (pH < 7). No chloride in the book's classification is “basic” — basic behaviour belongs to the oxides/hydroxides, not the chlorides.

Section 3 — Descriptive Questions (English)
DESCRIPTIVE + ANSWERS

Q.3–Q.6 Descriptive questions from the book's exercise (printed p. 19).

Q.3 Write equations for the reactions of Na and Mg with oxygen, chlorine, and water. Compare reactivity of both elements with these in terms of metallic character.

With water: 2Na(s) + 2H2O(l) → 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g) (vigorous); Mg(s) + 2H2O(l) → Mg(OH)2(aq) + H2(g) (slow); with steam: Mg(s) + 2H2O(g) → MgO(s) + 2H2(g) (vigorous). With oxygen: 2Na(s) + O2(g) → Na2O2(s) (peroxide, golden yellow flame; in open air); 4Na(s) + O2(g) → 2Na2O(s) (limited O2/high temperature); 2Mg(s) + O2(g) → 2MgO(s) (intense white flame). With chlorine: 2Na(s) + Cl2(g) → 2NaCl(s) (exothermic, golden yellow flame); Mg(s) + Cl2(g) → MgCl2(s). Comparison (metallic character): Sodium is more metallic and more reactive than magnesium in every case. Metallic character is the tendency to lose electrons; Na has one valence electron held loosely (ionization energy 494 kJ mol−1) while Mg has two valence electrons held by a larger effective nuclear charge, so it loses electrons less readily. This is the across-a-period trend: metallic character decreases from left to right, so Na (group 1) is more reactive/metallic than Mg (group 2).

Q.4 Explain with the help of equations, acidic and basic behavior of oxides and chlorides.

Basic oxides: Group 1 and 2 oxides give alkalis with water — Na2O(s) + H2O(l) → 2NaOH(aq); CaO(s) + H2O(l) → Ca(OH)2(aq). Acidic oxides: Nonmetal oxides give acids with water — P2O5(s) + H2O(l) → H3PO4(aq); SO2(g) + H2O(l) → H2SO3(aq) — and react with bases: SiO2(s) + 2NaOH(aq) → Na2SiO3(aq) + H2O(l); SO2(g) + 2NaOH(aq) → Na2SO3(aq) + H2O(l). Amphoteric oxide: Al2O3 reacts with both — Al2O3(s) + 6HCl(aq) → 2AlCl3(s) + 3H2O(l) (as a base) and Al2O3(s) + 2NaOH(aq) → 2NaAlO2(s) + H2O(l) (as an acid). Chlorides: Neutral — NaCl(s) → Na+(aq) + Cl−(aq) (pH 7), MgCl2(s) → Mg2+(aq) + 2Cl−(aq) (pH 6.5) — mere hydration, no reaction with water. Acidic — AlCl3(s) + 3H2O(l) → Al(OH)3(s) + 3HCl(aq); SiCl4(l) + 2H2O(l) → SiO2(s) + 4HCl(aq); PCl3(l) + 3H2O(l) → H3PO3(s) + 3HCl(aq) — hydrolysis producing HCl, so pH < 7. The pattern: left of period 3 = ionic/basic/neutral, right = covalent/acidic.

Q.5 Describe the factors affecting and periodic trends of electron affinity.

Definition: First electron affinity is the enthalpy change when 1 mole of electrons is added to 1 mole of gaseous atoms to form 1 mole of gaseous uni-negative ions: Cl(g) + e− → Cl−(g), ΔHoea1 = −348.8 kJ mol−1 (negative because energy is released). The second electron affinity is positive (O− + e− → O2−, +844 kJ mol−1) because the negative ion repels the incoming electron. Factors: (i) Size — smaller atom, stronger nuclear attraction for the incoming electron, greater affinity. (ii) Nuclear charge — greater charge, stronger attraction, greater affinity. (iii) Electronic configuration — affinity is low when the electron enters a half-filled subshell; N and P (group 15, np3) have very low values because their half-filled p-subshells are very stable. Trends: Down a group, affinity generally decreases (becomes less negative) as size increases — halogens: F −328, Cl −349, Br −324, I −295, At −270 kJ mol−1 (note Cl is slightly more negative than F — the book's table shows this; the general trend is still less negative down the group); group 1: Li −60 → Cs −46 kJ mol−1. Across a period, affinities become more negative left to right due to increasing nuclear charge and decreasing radius.

Q.6 Define ionization energy. Discuss the factors affecting and periodic trends of ionization energy.

Definition: First ionization energy is the energy needed to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions: Na(g) → Na+(g) + e−, ΔHi1 = 494 kJ mol−1. Successive energies rise (Ca: 590, 1150, 4940 kJ mol−1 for 1st, 2nd, 3rd), and an element can have as many as its atomic number. Factors: (i) Nuclear charge — greater effective charge, higher ionization energy. (ii) Size — bigger atom, weaker nucleus–outer-electron attraction, lower ionization energy. (iii) Electronic arrangement — removing an electron from a half-filled or fully-filled subshell costs more: noble gases (ns2 np6) are highest in their periods; nitrogen (half-filled 2p3, 1403 kJ mol−1) exceeds oxygen (1365 kJ mol−1). (iv) Shielding — more inner electrons shield the valence electrons, lowering ionization energy. (v) Spin-pair repulsion — paired electrons in one orbital repel and are easier to remove (Mn, 4s2, lower than expected vs Cr, 4s1). Trends: Down a group, ionization energy decreases (size and shielding increase) — Group 1: Li > Na > K > Rb > Cs. Across a period, it increases (same shells, rising effective nuclear charge) — noble gases highest, alkali metals lowest, with the known dips (B below Be, Al below Mg, O below N) explained by filled/half-filled stability above.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Periodic Table and Periodic Properties is the map of all chemistry. History (1.1): Lavoisier's metals/nonmetals, Döbereiner's triads, Newlands' first periodicity (1864), Lothar Meyer's curves, Mendeleev's gaps and predictions (1869), and Moseley's atomic-number table (1913) — the Periodic Law: properties are periodic functions of atomic numbers; 118 elements today. Modern table (1.2): 7 periods, 18 groups, same group = same valence electrons = similar chemistry. Types (1.3): metals lose electrons, nonmetals gain them, metalloids sit on the stair-step line from B to Po (hydrogen is the exception). Blocks (1.4): s = groups 1–2, p = 13–18, d = transition metals, f = lanthanides/actinides. Families (1.5): alkali (1), alkaline earth (2), transition (variable states, coloured compounds), chalcogens (16), halogens (17, need 1 electron), noble gases (18, full shells — yet XePtF6 exists). Position ↔ configuration (1.6): period = shells, group = valence electrons (Mg: period 3, group 2; Al: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p1). Properties (1.7): atomic radius ↓ across, ↑ down; cation < atom < anion; ionization energy ↑ across, ↓ down (noble gases highest, alkali lowest; N > O, Be > B dips explained); electron affinity more negative across, less negative down (Cl −349, halogens down to At −270; 2nd affinity positive); electronegativity ↑ across (Li 1.0 → F 4.0), ↓ down (F 4.0 → I 2.5); metallic character ↓ across, ↑ down (Cs most reactive). Na & Mg (1.8): Na vigorous with water, golden yellow flame, peroxide in air; Mg slow with cold water, vigorous with steam, intense white flame; both give chlorides. Oxides/chlorides (1.9): period 3 goes ionic/basic/neutral (left) to covalent/acidic (right); Al2O3 amphoteric; chlorides neutral by hydration (NaCl pH 7, MgCl2 pH 6.5) or acidic by hydrolysis (AlCl3, SiCl4, PCl3). Oxidation numbers (1.10): match group numbers (Na +1 … S +6/+4, P +5/+3) via empty 3d orbitals.

Revision guidance: رٹ لو — period/group rules, تھے five ionization-energy factors, تھے EA table values for groups 1 and 17, تھے نہ/Mg equations (flame colours included), and تھے oxide/chloride classification with one equation each. Exercise کے MCQs I–XI اور short (a)–(m) کو پہلے خود حل کرو, پھر answers سے ملاؤ.
