ENGLISH

Elements present in Group 17 of the periodic table are termed as halogens. It includes fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), astatine (At) and tennessine (Ts). The halogen elements form a group of very reactive non-metals and are quite similar to each other in their chemical properties. The first four elements are the common elements of the halogen family, but the last two, astatine (At) and tennessine (Ts), are very rare and radioactive.

📌 Did You Know! (book's side note): the name halogen comes from the Greek words "halos", meaning "salt", and "gen", meaning "to make". The first halogen to be isolated and recognized as an element was chlorine. Despite the fact that chlorine is poisonous, a small amount is essential to human health and life in the form of chloride.

Halogens exist as diatomic molecules in all phases (gas, liquid or solid). Fluorine (F2) and chlorine (Cl2) are gases of pale yellow and greenish-yellow colours respectively at room temperature and pressure. Bromine (Br2) is a volatile liquid of reddish-brown colour at room temperature. It is corrosive and toxic fumes. Iodine (I2) is shiny greyish black solid at room temperature. It sublimes directly from solid to a violet vapor. The colors of halogens (X2) darken progressively from chlorine to iodine. The trends of colour changes from chlorine to iodine are due to changes in the absorption of light as a result of electron transitions within the molecules of respective halogens.

Note the wording variance in the book itself: the chapter opener calls chlorine "greenish yellow" (and Figure 13.1's caption says the same), while Table 13.1 lists it as "pale green"; fluorine is called "pale yellow" in the opener and "colourless or very light green" in Section 13.2. Both wordings are the book's own — learn the trend (colours darken down the group), not one exact shade word.

Quick Check 13.1 (a) and (b) (book): (a) The radioactive halogen elements are astatine (At) and tennessine (Ts) — the book's opener says the last two members of the family are very rare and radioactive. (b) The different colours of the halogens are due to changes in the absorption of light as a result of electron transitions within the molecules of the respective halogens — as the molecules get bigger down the group, the energy of those transitions falls and the absorbed (and therefore seen) colour darkens from chlorine to iodine.

۱ — عام ہیلوجنز کی خصوصیات: پروٹون نمبر: F 9، Cl 17، Br 35، I 53۔ بیرونی شیل ترتیب: سب کی ns2np5 (یعنی آکٹیٹ مکمل کرنے کے لیے ایک الیکٹران درکار)۔ ایٹمی کمیت: 19.0، 35.5، 79.9، 126.9۔ 20 °C پر حالت: F گیس، Cl گیس، Br مائع، I ٹھوس۔ رنگ: F ہلکا پیلا، Cl ہلکا سبز، Br سرخی مائل بھورا، I گہرا سرمئی۔ نقطہ پگھلاؤ: −220، −101، −7، 113 °C۔ نقطہ ابال: −188، −35، 59، 183 °C۔ بخارات بننے کی انتھالپی: +3.3، +10.2، +15، +30 kJ/mol۔ پانی میں حل پذیری (20 °C، فی 100 g پانی): F پانی سے تیزی سے تعمل کرتی ہے، Cl 0.59 g (تھوڑی تعمل)، Br 3.6 g، I 0.018 g۔

ENGLISH

13.1 Volatility of chlorine, bromine and iodine. Chlorine is very volatile at room temperature and it disperses quickly in the air. Bromine is less volatile than chlorine but more volatile than iodine. It evaporates readily, releasing toxic fumes at room temperature. Iodine is the least volatile among the three. At room temperature, its solid state shows lower volatility as compared to chlorine and bromine. Generally, volatility decreases from chlorine to iodine. This trend is due to the increasing molecular mass, increase in size of outer shell and stronger intermolecular forces (London dispersion forces) as we move down the group in the periodic table.

⚠️ Book slip flagged: Section 13.1 opens with the words "Chlorine being a liquid is very volatile" — but chlorine is a gas at room temperature, as Table 13.1 itself states (physical state at 20 °C: gas; boiling point −35 °C). Read that sentence as "chlorine, being a gas, is very volatile". The volatility trend itself is unaffected.

📌 Interesting Information (book's side note): Bromine liquid evaporates easily at room temperatures emitting an orange vapor. Bromine has a very strong and bad odor. It gets its name from the Greek word "bromos" which means "stench".

13.2 Trend in volatility of the halogens. Halogens are non-polar and instantaneous dipole-induced dipole forces play a significant role in determining the volatility of halogens. The forces depend on factors like molecular size, shape and polarizability, with stronger forces leading to lower volatility and higher boiling points. Substances with weak id-id forces, smaller and less polarizable molecules have lower boiling points and higher volatility. Larger and more polarizable molecules with stronger London dispersion forces have higher boiling points and lower volatility.

Volatility is inversely related to the boiling point of a substance. A more volatile substance will have a lower boiling point. Stronger intermolecular forces require more energy to separate the molecules from the liquid phase to the gaseous phase. A summary about polarizability and volatility is given in Table 13.2:

SizePolarizabilityInstantaneous dipole–induced dipole forcesBoiling pointVolatility
SmallSmallWeakLowerHigher
LargeHighStrongHigherLower

The first two halogens, i.e. fluorine (colourless or very light green) and chlorine (greenish yellow) are gases due to weaker id-id forces. Bromine is a liquid as its size is bigger and it possesses stronger intermolecular forces than fluorine and chlorine. Iodine has the strongest forces among the group, so it is in solid state at room temperature.

Quick Check 13.1 (c) (book): Chlorine is more volatile than bromine and iodine because it is smaller and less polarizable, so its instantaneous dipole–induced dipole (London dispersion) forces are weaker, its boiling point is lower (−35 °C, against bromine's 59 °C and iodine's 183 °C), and its molecules escape into the gas phase more easily. Volatility falls down the group as size, polarizability and London forces all increase.

13.3 — The Bond Strength of Halogen Molecules
🏷 Tags: bond energy, F–F bond, lone pair repulsion, bond length, chlorine bond strength
ENGLISH

Bond strength in halogens decreases as we move down the group from chlorine to iodine. This is due to the increase in the atomic size down the group which results in longer bond lengths and weaker bonds. Moving from top to bottom in group 17, the bond energies of halogens decrease gradually from chlorine to iodine. However, fluorine is an exception in this group. In the case of fluorine, the bond strength is relatively weak because fluorine atoms are very small. Due to the small size, there is significant electron–electron repulsion between the lone pairs on the fluorine atoms, which weakens the bond despite the high electronegativity of fluorine. The bond energy of halogens is listed in Table 13.3:

Halogen moleculeBond energy (kJ mol−1)
F2156
Cl2243
Br2193
I2151

Read the table in order: from chlorine downwards the bond energy falls steadily (243 → 193 → 151) as atoms get bigger and bonds get longer. Fluorine breaks the pattern — at 156 it is far weaker than chlorine's 243, even though fluorine is the smallest halogen. The book's Figure 13.2 shows why: in F2 the lone pairs on the two tiny atoms sit very close together and repel each other (lp–lp repulsion), and that repulsion weakens the F–F bond. This one exception explains a great deal in this chapter — it is a major reason fluorine is so reactive (Section 13.4) and why hydrogen fluoride is so stable (Section 13.6).

X–X bond energy (kJ/mol) — fluorine is the exceptionF₂ 156Cl₂ 243Br₂ 193I₂ 151← weak: lp–lp repulsion← strongest X–X bond← weakest, longest bond
13.4 — Relative Reactivities of the Halogens as Oxidising Agents
🏷 Tags: oxidising agent, displacement, standard electrode potential, fluorine strongest oxidant, halide ions
ENGLISH

All the free halogens act as oxidizing agents when they react with metals and most of non-metals. On forming ionic compounds with metals, the halogens gain electrons and are converted to negative halide ions. For example:

2Na(s) + Cl2(g) → 2NaCl(s)

The oxidizing power of halogens decreases down the group. Fluorine has the highest oxidizing power and iodine the least. The order of decreasing power as an oxidizing agent is:

F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2

The reactivity of halogens is directly related to their ability to acquire an electron and form halide ions (F−, Cl−, Br− and I−) when they react with other elements. Fluorine has the highest tendency to acquire an electron and form fluoride. Fluorine molecule can oxidize and displace all the halide ions from their solutions (Cl−, Br− and I−) to free halogens:

F2(g) + Cl−(aq) → F−(aq) + Cl2(g)

F2(g) + Br−(aq) → F−(aq) + Br2(g)

F2(g) + I−(aq) → F−(aq) + I2(g)

Similarly, chlorine can oxidize and displace Br− and I−. Bromine can oxidize and displace I−. Iodine cannot oxidize any halide ion. The rule to remember: a halogen higher in the group displaces a halide lower in the group — never the reverse.

The oxidizing power of halogens can be related to standard electrode potential (E°) values. Fluorine is the most reactive halogen and the most powerful oxidizing agent. The standard electrode potential E° (X2/X−) for halogens shown in Table 13.4 becomes less positive from fluorine to iodine. This reflects the decreasing oxidizing power. The oxidizing power of halogens depends upon various factors, i.e. energy of dissociation, electron affinity of atoms, hydration energies of ions, and heats of vaporization (for Br2 and I2). A halogen having low energy of dissociation, high electron affinity and higher hydration energy of its ions, will have a high oxidizing power.

Halogen molecule (X2)Standard reduction potential, E° (V)
F2+2.87
Cl2+1.36
Br2+1.07
I2+0.54

Quick Check 13.2 (book): (a) The F–F bond is weaker than the Cl–Cl bond although fluorine is the most electronegative element because of the small size of fluorine atoms and the strong lone-pair–lone-pair repulsion between them (Section 13.3) — electronegativity is about attracting electrons in a bond, not about how easily the X–X bond itself breaks. (b) The reaction between NaCl(aq) and F2 gas is possible: fluorine, the strongest oxidising agent, displaces chloride — F2(g) + 2Cl−(aq) → 2F−(aq) + Cl2(g) (the book's Section 13.4 equation written balanced). (c) The relationship is direct: the higher (more positive) the standard reduction potential E°, the stronger the oxidising agent — E° falls F2 (+2.87) → Cl2 (+1.36) → Br2 (+1.07) → I2 (+0.54) exactly as oxidising power falls.

13.5 — Reactions of the Halogens with Hydrogen
🏷 Tags: hydrogen halides, hydrohalic acids, explosive fluorine, UV light, catalyst, reversible reaction
ENGLISH

When halogen elements react with hydrogen, they produce hydrogen halides:

H2 + X2 → 2HX   (where X = F2, Cl2, Br2 and I2)

Hydrogen halides are colourless gases that dissolve in water to form hydrohalic acid. When we move down the group from fluorine to iodine, the reactivity of halogens with hydrogen decreases:

F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2

Fluorine: at low temperature and in the dark, fluorine reacts explosively with hydrogen:

H2(g) + F2(g) → 2HF(g)

When this gas is dissolved in water, it forms hydrofluoric acid.

Chlorine: in the presence of UV light or a spark, chlorine reacts readily with hydrogen and produces colourless HCl gas which forms hydrochloric acid in water:

H2(g) + Cl2(g) —hν→ 2HCl(g)

Bromine: hydrogen bromide (HBr) gas is produced when bromine reacts with hydrogen upon heating. HBr gas is less reactive than HCl and HF. It forms a strong hydrobromic acid in water. This is an exothermic reaction:

H2(g) + Br2(g) —Δ→ 2HBr(g)

Iodine: at high temperature and in presence of a catalyst, iodine reacts with hydrogen to form hydrogen iodide (HI) gas, which forms hydroiodic acid in water:

H2(g) + I2(g) —catalyst⇌ 2HI(g)

This is a reversible reaction and occurs very slowly. So the conditions tell the whole story: fluorine needs no help at all (cold, dark, explosive); chlorine needs light or a spark; bromine needs heat; iodine needs high temperature and a catalyst — and even then it is slow and reversible.

ENGLISH

As we move down the halogen group from fluorine to iodine, the thermal stabilities of hydrogen halides (H–X) decrease due to decrease in bond dissociation energies as given in Table 13.5. The order of thermal stability of HX is as follows:

HF > HCl > HBr > HI

Bond strength between the hydrogen and the halogen atom in the H–X molecule explains this trend. Hydrogen fluoride (HF) is the most thermally stable hydrogen halide. Due to the high electronegativity of fluorine and its small atomic radius, a strong overlap of orbitals produces a very strong H–F bond. The bond dissociation energy of H–F (569 kJ/mol) is the highest among the hydrogen halides. Hydrogen chloride (HCl) is less thermally stable than hydrogen fluoride but more stable than other hydrogen halides. Due to the larger atomic radius of chlorine than fluorine, H–Cl bond is weaker than H–F bond. Its bond dissociation energy is 431 kJ/mol. Hydrogen bromide (H–Br) bond is weaker than H–F and H–Cl due to the larger atomic radius of bromine. There is a reduced overlapping of orbitals. Its bond dissociation energy is 366 kJ/mol. Among the common hydrogen halides, hydrogen iodide (HI) is the least thermally stable. Atomic radius of iodine is very large leading to poor orbital overlap due to which hydrogen iodide bond is the weakest among H–F, H–Cl and H–Br. The bond dissociation energy of hydrogen iodide is 299 kJ/mol.

Quick Check 13.3 (book): (a) The H2 + F2 reaction is explosive but the H2 + I2 reaction is slow and reversible because the F–F bond is weak (156 kJ/mol, Section 13.3) and the H–F bond formed is extremely strong (569 kJ/mol) — so the reaction releases a great deal of energy very fast — whereas the H–I bond formed is weak (299 kJ/mol), so little energy is released, the reaction needs high temperature and a catalyst, and the reverse reaction (HI breaking apart) competes, making it slow and reversible. (b) Comparing H2 + Cl2 → 2HCl with H2 + Br2 → 2HBr using Tables 13.4 and 13.5: the HCl reaction is more exothermic, because the H–Cl bond formed (431 kJ/mol) is stronger than the H–Br bond (366 kJ/mol), so more energy is released on forming 2HCl than 2HBr. ⚠️ The book's tables give H–X and X–X bond energies but not the H–H bond energy; the comparison uses the standard H–H value (436 kJ/mol) only to complete the arithmetic — the conclusion (HCl more exothermic) follows from the chapter's own H–X values alone, since 431 > 366. (c) Thermal stability is directly related to bond dissociation energy: the stronger the H–X bond (higher dissociation energy), the more heat is needed to break it, so the more thermally stable the hydrogen halide — hence HF (569) > HCl (431) > HBr (366) > HI (299). (d) HF is the most thermally stable hydrogen halide because fluorine is small and highly electronegative, giving strong orbital overlap and the strongest H–X bond of all (569 kJ/mol) — the hardest bond in the series to break by heating.

🏷 Tags: reducing agent, halide ions, charge density, electronegativity, iodide strongest
ENGLISH

The reducing ability of halide ions increases as we move down the group from fluorine to iodine. This trend is mostly due to the decreasing electronegativity and increasing atomic radius down the group. This results in lower charge density and greater ease of electron donation. Fluoride ion is the weakest reducing agent while iodide ion is the strongest reducing agent among the halides.

The order of decreasing power as a reducing agent is: I− > Br− > Cl− > F−.

The following is an explanation of this trend in terms of their properties. The high electronegativity of fluorine and the strong bond between the fluorine atom and its extra electron make it difficult for fluoride ion (F−) to donate electrons. The small size of fluoride ion results in a high charge density, further stabilizing the fluoride ion and reducing its tendency to lose an electron.

Chloride ion (Cl−) is a stronger reducing agent than fluoride but still weaker than bromide and iodide. This is due to its larger size and lower electronegativity.

Bromide (Br−) is a stronger reducing agent than chloride. Bromine is less electronegative than chlorine. Bromide ion (Br−) has a larger ionic radius and lower charge density due to which it easily loses an electron and acts as a reducing agent.

Iodide (I−) is much stronger reducing agent than both chloride and bromide. Electronegativity of iodine is much lower than chlorine and bromine. Iodide ion (I−) is large in size. This results in a lower charge density and a tendency to donate an electron by the iodide ion, making it strong reducing agent.

Notice the mirror image: as oxidising power of the halogen molecules falls down the group (F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2), the reducing power of their ions rises (I− > Br− > Cl− > F−). The strongest oxidiser gives the weakest reducer, and vice versa. The next two sections are the experimental proof of this trend: iodide reduces concentrated sulfuric acid the furthest (Section 13.9), while fluoride does not reduce it at all.

Quick Check 13.5 (c) (book): HI acts as a strong reducing agent — proved by its reaction with concentrated sulfuric acid (Section 13.9): 8HI(s) + H2SO4(l) → 4I2(s) + H2S(g) + 4H2O(l). Here iodide (−1) is oxidised to iodine (0) while sulfur in the acid (+6) is reduced all the way to −2 in H2S — the deepest reduction any halide achieves in this chapter, which is exactly what "strongest reducing agent" means.

13.8.1 Reactions of halides with aqueous silver ion. Insoluble silver halides (AgX) are formed when halide ions react with aqueous silver nitrate (AgNO3). These reactions are used in qualitative analysis to identify halide ions. The general reaction is given below:

X−(aq) + Ag+(aq) → AgX(s)

⚠️ Book slip flagged: the book prints this general equation as "X1− + Ag1+ → 2AgX(s)" — the "2" in front of AgX is a misprint. The balanced form is 1:1, as written above and as the book's own three individual equations show.

No reaction is visible when silver ions and fluoride ions are mixed in the aqueous medium. As silver fluoride is soluble in water, fluoride (F−) does not form precipitate as silver fluoride.

When silver ions and chloride ions are mixed in the aqueous medium a white precipitate of silver chloride forms, which is soluble in dilute ammonia:

Ag+(aq) + Cl−(aq) → AgCl(s)

On mixing of aqueous silver ions with aqueous bromide ions, a cream-coloured precipitate of silver bromide forms. This precipitate of silver bromide is sparingly soluble in concentrated ammonia:

Ag+(aq) + Br−(aq) → AgBr(s)

A yellow precipitate of silver iodide forms on mixing aqueous silver ion with aqueous halide solution. The product AgI is insoluble in ammonia:

Ag+(aq) + I−(aq) → AgI(s)

This type of reaction is used to identify halide ions and is called silver nitrate test.

13.8.2 Reaction of silver halides (AgX) with aqueous ammonia. Addition of aqueous ammonia tests the solubility of initially formed silver halide precipitates. AgF is soluble in water so it does not form precipitate, so ammonia has no effect. The white precipitate of AgCl dissolves in dilute ammonia to form diamminesilver(I) complex. The white precipitate of AgCl dissolves in dilute ammonia forming a colourless solution:

AgCl(s) + 2NH3(aq) → [Ag(NH3)2]+(aq) + Cl−(aq)

The cream-coloured precipitate of AgBr dissolves in concentrated ammonia, forming a colourless solution:

AgBr(s) + 2NH3(aq) → [Ag(NH3)2]+(aq) + Br−(aq)

The yellow precipitate of silver iodide (AgI) does not dissolve in both dilute and concentrated ammonia, so there is no change in the presence of ammonia.

The below sequence of reactions in Table 13.6 provides a systematic way to differentiate between halide ions using their solubility with aqueous silver ions and ammonia:

Halide ionAction of aq. Ag+ ionAction of aqueous ammonia
Fluoride ion (F−)No precipitateNo reaction with aq. NH3
Chloride ion (Cl−)White precipitate (AgCl)Soluble in dil. aq. NH3
Bromide ion (Br−)Cream colour precipitate (AgBr)Soluble in conc. aq. NH3
Iodide ion (I−)Pale yellow precipitate (AgI)Insoluble in aq. NH3

Note: the running text calls the AgI precipitate "yellow", while Table 13.6 calls it "pale yellow" — the table's wording is used in the summary table above; the colour to learn is the pale-yellow end of the white → cream → pale-yellow sequence.

Quick Check 13.4 (book): (a) F− is a weaker reducing agent than Cl− because fluorine is more electronegative and the fluoride ion is small with a high charge density, so it holds its extra electron tightly and is stabilised against losing it — exactly Section 13.7's argument (chloride is larger, less electronegative, lower charge density, so it gives up an electron more easily). (b) ⚠️ The book gives the observations (AgCl dissolves in dilute ammonia, AgBr only in concentrated, AgI not at all) but no dedicated passage explaining why the solubilities differ. The standard explanation, consistent with the chapter, is the balance between the silver halide's lattice strength and the stability of the diamminesilver(I) complex [Ag(NH3)2]+: AgCl's lattice is weakest, so even dilute ammonia's complex formation pulls it into solution; AgBr's lattice is stronger, so only concentrated ammonia (more NH3 available) dissolves it; AgI's lattice is strongest (most covalent character), so not even concentrated ammonia dissolves it. This cause is not stated in the book and is flagged as such. (c) KI with Ag+ followed by aq. NH3: Ag+(aq) + I−(aq) → AgI(s) (pale-yellow precipitate), and on adding aqueous ammonia — dilute or concentrated — there is no change: the precipitate remains, because AgI is insoluble in ammonia. Observation at completion: a pale-yellow precipitate still sitting in the solution.

ENGLISH

The reactions of different halide ions with concentrated sulfuric acid are different from one another. The nature of the product and nature of reaction changes down the group from fluoride to iodide.

Fluoride: fumes of hydrogen fluoride gas are produced when concentrated sulfuric acid reacts with NaF. HF is a weak reducing agent, therefore, it does not react with H2SO4 further:

NaF(s) + H2SO4(l) → NaHSO4(l) + HF(g)

Chloride: when concentrated sulfuric acid reacts with sodium chloride, fumes of hydrogen chloride gas are produced:

NaCl(s) + H2SO4(l) → NaHSO4(l) + HCl(g)

Bromide: in case of Br− ion, steamy fumes of hydrogen bromide (HBr) gas and brown fumes of bromine (Br2) are produced along with the smell of sulfur dioxide (SO2). It is a redox reaction. Hydrogen bromide acts as a reducing agent by reducing sulfuric acid to sulfur dioxide and is self-oxidized to bromine:

NaBr + H2SO4(l) → NaHSO4(l) + HBr(g)

2HBr(s) + H2SO4(l) → Br2(g) + 2SO2(g) + 2H2O(l)

Iodide: when concentrated sulfuric acid reacts with sodium iodide, fumes of hydrogen iodide gas, purple fumes of solid iodine I2 and smell of H2S gas are produced. HI acts as a strong reducing agent. It reduces H2SO4 to H2S and is itself oxidized to I2:

NaI + H2SO4(l) → NaHSO4(l) + HI(g)

8HI(s) + H2SO4(l) → 4I2(s) + H2S(g) + 4H2O(l)

The trend of increasing reducing power of the halide ions (X−) from fluoride to iodide leads to more complex reactions with concentrated sulfuric acid. Read it as a staircase: F− and Cl− give only the simple acid-displacement product (HF, HCl fumes, no redox); Br− goes one step further and reduces the acid to SO2 while itself becoming Br2; I− goes furthest and reduces the acid all the way to H2S while itself becoming I2. The sulfur in the acid falls from +6 to +4 (with bromide) and to −2 (with iodide) — the deeper the fall, the stronger the reducer.

Small print note: the book labels the sodium iodide in the first iodide equation as NaI(aq), while the fluoride, chloride and bromide salts in the same series are shown as solids. The reaction is the same acid displacement either way; the (aq) label is inconsistent with the pattern of the series and is noted here rather than silently changed.

Quick Check 13.5 (a) (book): KI reacts with concentrated H2SO4 exactly as above: first the displacement gives HI fumes (KI + H2SO4 → KHSO4 + HI), then HI, being a strong reducing agent, reduces the acid further — purple iodine fumes and the smell of H2S appear (8HI + H2SO4 → 4I2 + H2S + 4H2O). What this indicates about the reducing power of iodide is that it is the strongest reducing agent among the halides: it alone drives sulfur from +6 all the way down to −2, while bromide only reaches +4 (SO2) and chloride and fluoride do not reduce the acid at all.

ENGLISH

Those reactions in which a single element undergoes both oxidation and reduction simultaneously are known as disproportionation reactions. When chlorine reacts with cold and hot aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH), it undergoes disproportionation and forms different products according to the temperature of the reaction.

13.10.1 Reaction with cold aqueous sodium hydroxide. Chlorine undergoes disproportionation when it reacts with cold aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH) forming sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium chlorate (I) (NaClO):

Cl2(g) + 2NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + NaClO(aq) + H2O(l)

Oxidation states of chlorine in the above reaction are given below:

Chlorine in Cl2 = 0; Chlorine in NaCl = −1; Chlorine in NaClO = +1.

📌 Keep in Mind! (book's side note): sodium chlorate (I) is previously called sodium hypochlorite.

Chlorine in Cl2 is oxidized from 0 to +1 in NaClO. Chlorine in Cl2 is reduced from 0 to −1 in NaCl. The above reaction shows the simultaneous oxidation and reduction of chlorine and is an example of disproportionation reaction.

13.10.2 Reaction with hot aqueous sodium hydroxide. When chlorine reacts with hot aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH), it forms sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium chlorate (V) (NaClO3). It is another example of disproportionation reaction:

3Cl2(g) + 6NaOH(aq) → 5NaCl(aq) + NaClO3(aq) + 3H2O(l)

Chlorine in Cl2 = 0; Chlorine in NaCl = −1; Chlorine in NaClO3 = +5.

Chlorine is oxidized from 0 to +5 in NaClO3. Chlorine is reduced from 0 to −1 in NaCl. This disproportionation reaction shows how the temperature of the reaction influences the products formed, demonstrating the versatility of chlorine in undergoing redox reactions.

The contrast to memorise: cold → chlorate(I), NaClO, chlorine goes 0 → +1; hot → chlorate(V), NaClO3, chlorine goes 0 → +5. In both cases the other half of the chlorine is reduced 0 → −1 in NaCl. The hot reaction needs three Cl2 molecules (six chlorine atoms: five reduced, one oxidised) where the cold reaction needs only one.

Quick Check 13.5 (b) (book): The reaction of Cl2 with cold and hot aqueous KOH is a disproportionation reaction for the same reason as with NaOH — the book gives the NaOH equations, and the potassium equations follow the identical pattern (only the metal ion changes): cold: Cl2(g) + 2KOH(aq) → KCl(aq) + KClO(aq) + H2O(l) (chlorine 0 → −1 and 0 → +1); hot: 3Cl2(g) + 6KOH(aq) → 5KCl(aq) + KClO3(aq) + 3H2O(l) (chlorine 0 → −1 and 0 → +5). In each case the same element, chlorine, is simultaneously oxidised and reduced — the definition of disproportionation. ⚠️ The KOH equations themselves are not printed in the book; they are the NaOH equations with K in place of Na, flagged as an analogy, not a book equation.

Disproportionation — chlorine goes both ways from 0COLD NaOH: Cl₂ + 2NaOH → NaCl + NaClO + H₂O0 → −1 (reduced) and 0 → +1 (oxidised)HOT NaOH: 3Cl₂ + 6NaOH → 5NaCl + NaClO₃ + 3H₂O0 → −1 (reduced) and 0 → +5 (oxidised)Same element, both directions at once = disproportionation
13.11 — Use of Chlorine in Water Purification
🏷 Tags: water purification, chlorination, hypochlorous acid, HOCl, hypochlorite, disinfection, pH, contact time
ENGLISH

Chlorine gas is very poisonous. However, in small quantities, they are harmless to humans but poisonous to the bacteria which cause diseases. Due to its strong disinfectant properties, chlorine is widely used at the treatment plants for water purification. The process involves adding chlorine to water, where it forms active species that kill bacteria and other pathogens. Water in the swimming pools is also chlorinated with slightly higher concentrations of chlorine because there is likely to be a higher concentration of bacteria in the water. The primary active species are chloric (I) acid or hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and the chlorate (I) or hypochlorite ions (OCl−). Chlorination is a relatively inexpensive method of water disinfections.

13.11.1 Chlorine addition to water. When chlorine gas (Cl2) is added to water, it undergoes hydrolysis to form a mixture of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and chloric (I) acid (HClO):

Cl2(g) + H2O(l) → HCl(aq) + HClO(aq)

Chloric (I) acid (HOCl) is a weak acid and partially dissociate in water to form hydrogen ions (H+) and chlorate (I) ion (OCl−):

HOCl(aq) ⇌ H+(aq) + OCl−(aq)

13.11.2 Disinfection activity. HOCl and OCl− are effective disinfectants, but HOCl is more effective due to its neutral charge. The neutral charge of HOCl allows to penetrate the cell walls of micro-organisms easily. Essential cellular components such as proteins and lipids are oxidized by HOCl and OCl−, which disrupt the cell function leading to cell death. HOCl and OCl− can oxidize and inactivate enzymes that are crucial for survival and replication of bacteria.

📌 Interesting Information (book's side note): nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) can be oxidized by HOCl and OCl− and thus preventing bacteria from replicating and vital cellular functions.

13.11.3 Factors affecting disinfection.

pH: (i) At pH around 6–7.5, HOCl predominates and makes the disinfection process more effective. (ii) At higher pH (above 7.5), OCl− predominates. It is less effective but still provides disinfection.

Chlorine dose: the higher the amount of chlorine, the more effective the disinfection. Sufficient chlorine must be added to get enough HOCl and OCl− to kill bacteria.

Contact time: contact time of water with chlorine must be long enough, to allow the disinfectants to penetrate and kill bacteria, viruses and protozoa.

Quick Check 13.6 (book): (a) HOCl is a more effective disinfectant than OCl− to kill bacteria in water because HOCl is neutral, so it penetrates the cell walls of micro-organisms easily, whereas the negatively charged OCl− ion is repelled / held back by the cell surface; once inside, both oxidise proteins, lipids and enzymes, but HOCl gets in first and in greater amount. (b) The factors that affect disinfection of bacteria in water are pH, chlorine dose and contact time — pH 6–7.5 favours the more effective HOCl, a higher dose gives more HOCl/OCl−, and a longer contact time lets the disinfectants penetrate and kill bacteria, viruses and protozoa. (c) The primary active species in the chlorination of water are hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypochlorite ions (OCl−), formed by: Cl2(g) + H2O(l) → HCl(aq) + HOCl(aq), followed by HOCl(aq) ⇌ H+(aq) + OCl−(aq).

Water treatment tank with chlorinated clean water

MCQs + ANSWERS

1. Which halogen molecule has the strongest bond?

  • (a) F2
  • (b) Br2
  • (c) I2
  • (d) Cl2 ✓
Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) Cl2. — Table 13.3 gives the X–X bond energies: F2 156, Cl2 243, Br2 193, I2 151 kJ/mol. Chlorine's bond is the strongest; fluorine is the exception — despite being the smallest halogen, its bond is weak (156) because of lone-pair–lone-pair repulsion between its tiny atoms.

2. The volatility of the halogens (Group 17) generally __________ as you move down the group (from Fluorine to Iodine).

  • (a) Increases
  • (b) Decreases ✓
  • (c) Remains the same
  • (d) Fluctuates unpredictably
Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) Decreases. — Section 13.1–13.2: down the group the molecules get bigger and more polarizable, so instantaneous dipole–induced dipole (London dispersion) forces get stronger, boiling points rise (Cl2 −35 °C → Br2 59 °C → I2 183 °C) and volatility falls.

3. Which one of the following halogen molecules has strongest oxidizing power?

  • (a) Br2
  • (b) F2 ✓
  • (c) I2
  • (d) Cl2
Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) F2. — Section 13.4: oxidising power falls down the group, F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2, and the standard reduction potentials say the same (F2 +2.87 V, highest). Fluorine displaces every other halide ion from solution.

4. The decreasing thermal stability of the halogens down the group is primarily due to the:

  • (a) Increasing electronegativity of the atoms.
  • (b) Decreasing bond length between the halogen atoms.
  • (c) Increasing atomic radius, leading to a weaker covalent bond. ✓
  • (d) Increasing strength of van der Waals forces
Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Increasing atomic radius, leading to a weaker covalent bond. — Sections 13.3 and 13.6 both give this mechanism: bigger atoms → longer bonds → weaker bonds → lower bond energies (X–X: 243 → 193 → 151 from Cl2 to I2; H–X: 569 → 431 → 366 → 299 from HF to HI), so the compounds break apart more easily on heating. Electronegativity actually decreases down the group, bond length increases (not decreases), and stronger van der Waals forces would raise boiling points, not lower thermal stability.

5. Which one of the following halides has strongest reducing power?

  • (a) F−
  • (b) Cl−
  • (c) Br−
  • (d) I− ✓
Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) I−. — Section 13.7: reducing power rises down the group, I− > Br− > Cl− > F−, because electronegativity falls and ionic radius rises, so charge density falls and the ion gives up an electron more easily. ⚠️ Print slip flagged: in the book this question labels both Cl− and Br− with the letter (b); the options are re-lettered (a)–(d) here in order, which does not change the answer.

6. Which statement about the reaction between halogens and hydrogen is correct?

  • (a) Iodine reacts most vigorously with hydrogen.
  • (b) Chlorine and hydrogen explode in darkness.
  • (c) Fluorine combines explosively with hydrogen even in cold and dark conditions. ✓
  • (d) Bromine and hydrogen do not react at all.
Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Fluorine combines explosively with hydrogen even in cold and dark conditions. — Section 13.5 states this exactly: at low temperature and in the dark, fluorine reacts explosively with hydrogen. Iodine is the least vigorous (slow, reversible, needs high temperature and a catalyst); chlorine needs UV light or a spark, not darkness alone; bromine does react, on heating, to give HBr.

7. How does the acidic strength of hydrogen halides change as you move down the group?

  • (a) It remains constant.
  • (b) It decreases from HF to HI.
  • (c) It increases from HF to HI. ✓
  • (d) It fluctuates erratically.
Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) It increases from HF to HI. — ⚠️ The chapter has no dedicated passage on the acid-strength trend: Section 13.5 only says hydrogen halides dissolve in water to form hydrohalic acids. The answer follows from the chapter's own Table 13.5 bond energies: the H–X bond weakens down the group (569 → 431 → 366 → 299 kJ/mol), so the bond breaks and releases H+ more easily, and the acid is stronger — HF weakest, HI strongest. This reasoning from the chapter's bond data is flagged here because the trend itself is not stated as a book passage.

8. Why is fluorine the most reactive halogen?

  • (a) Bond length in the halogen molecule
  • (b) Bond strength in the halogen molecule ✓
  • (c) Electronegativity of the halogen
  • (d) Number of electrons in the halogen molecule
Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) Bond strength in the halogen molecule. — ⚠️ This question is flagged as loosely worded because the chapter gives two real reasons for fluorine's reactivity, not one: Section 13.3 stresses the exceptionally weak F–F bond (156 kJ/mol, weakened by lone-pair repulsion despite fluorine's small size), which breaks very easily, and Section 13.4 stresses fluorine's highest tendency to gain an electron (highest electronegativity, E° +2.87 V). Option (b) is marked because the weak bond is the chapter's distinctive mechanism — the F–F bond is weaker than Cl–Cl even though fluorine is smaller, which is precisely the exception Section 13.3 is built around — but (c) electronegativity is also a genuine contributing factor, not a wrong idea. Bond length alone (a) points the wrong way (fluorine's bond is the shortest, yet weakest), and (d) is irrelevant.

9. When aqueous silver nitrate is added to a solution containing bromide ions, a cream precipitate forms. What is the solubility of this precipitate in aqueous ammonia solution?

  • (a) Soluble in dilute ammonia solution
  • (b) Partially soluble in dilute ammonia solution
  • (c) Insoluble in dilute ammonia solution ✓
  • (d) Soluble only upon heating with ammonia
Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Insoluble in dilute ammonia solution. — Section 13.8/Table 13.6: the cream precipitate is AgBr. It dissolves in concentrated ammonia (as [Ag(NH3)2]+), not in dilute ammonia — dilute ammonia dissolves only AgCl. So in dilute ammonia AgBr stays as a precipitate, i.e. it is insoluble there. Heating is not the condition the book gives; concentration of ammonia is.

10. Concentrated sulfuric acid is added to solid sodium chloride. What is the initial observation?

  • (a) Reddish-brown fumes are evolved.
  • (b) A purple vapor is evolved.
  • (c) Steamy white fumes of hydrogen chloride are evolved. ✓
  • (d) A black solid is formed.
Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Steamy white fumes of hydrogen chloride are evolved. — Section 13.9: NaCl(s) + H2SO4(l) → NaHSO4(l) + HCl(g); chloride is too weak a reducing agent to reduce the acid further, so there is no redox colour change. Reddish-brown fumes would be Br2 (bromide case) and purple vapour would be I2 (iodide case). Note: the book's own words for the chloride case are "fumes of hydrogen chloride gas"; "steamy white" is the standard description of those fumes (the book uses "steamy fumes" for HBr in the same section).

Section 2 — Short Answer Questions
SHORT ANSWERS
1. Which halogen is the least reactive, which is the most reactive? Give reason.

Least reactive: iodine (I2). Most reactive: fluorine (F2). Reason: oxidising power falls down the group, F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2 (Section 13.4), confirmed by the standard reduction potentials F2 +2.87 V → I2 +0.54 V. Fluorine is most reactive because it has the highest tendency to gain an electron and its F–F bond is exceptionally weak (156 kJ/mol, lone-pair repulsion, Section 13.3), so it breaks easily and displaces every other halide ion; iodine's bond is weak too (151) but its tendency to gain an electron is lowest, so it displaces no halide ion at all.

2. The ionic equation for a reaction is: Br2 + 2I− → 2Br− + I2. Explain which species is oxidized in this reaction. Why?

Iodide ions (I−) are oxidised. Oxidation is loss of electrons: each I− (−1) loses one electron to become iodine, I2 (0) — 2I− → I2 + 2e−. Bromine is the species reduced (Br2 (0) + 2e− → 2Br−), because bromine is the stronger oxidising agent (higher in the group, E° +1.07 V against iodine's +0.54 V), so it takes electrons from iodide and displaces iodine. This is the displacement rule of Section 13.4 in ionic form. ⚠️ Print slip flagged: the book prints this equation as "Br2 + 2I− → Br− + I2", missing the coefficient 2 in front of Br−; the balanced form used here is 2Br−, which the electron count requires.

3. What is role of London dispersion forces in the trend of volatility of halogens?

London dispersion (instantaneous dipole–induced dipole) forces are the intermolecular forces between the non-polar halogen molecules, and they decide volatility (Section 13.2). Down the group the molecules get larger and more polarizable, so these forces get stronger; stronger forces need more energy to pull molecules from liquid to gas, so boiling points rise and volatility falls (Cl2 bp −35 °C, most volatile; I2 bp 183 °C, least volatile). Small, weakly polarizable molecules have weak forces, low boiling points and high volatility — that is Table 13.2's summary in one line.

4. How does the reactivity of halogens with hydrogen vary?

It decreases down the group: F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2 (Section 13.5). Fluorine reacts explosively with hydrogen even at low temperature and in the dark; chlorine reacts readily in UV light or with a spark; bromine reacts on heating (exothermic, giving HBr); iodine reacts only at high temperature with a catalyst, and then slowly and reversibly (H2 + I2 ⇌ 2HI). The products in every case are colourless hydrogen halide gases, which dissolve in water to give hydrohalic acids.

5. Which halogen is used as an antiseptic? How does it work?

⚠️ The chapter has no dedicated passage on antiseptics — it covers chlorine as a disinfectant for water (Section 13.11), not antiseptic use on skin. The standard answer, from general chemistry, is iodine: tincture of iodine (iodine dissolved in alcohol) is applied to skin and small wounds as an antiseptic. It works because iodine is an oxidising agent: it penetrates microbial cells and oxidises their proteins and other cell components (and iodinates them), killing bacteria and fungi on the skin surface. It is used on living tissue in small, controlled amounts, unlike chlorine gas, which is far too toxic and corrosive for skin use.

6. What is the colour change when chlorine displaces bromine?

The solution turns orange / reddish-brown. ⚠️ The chapter does not describe this displacement observation in a dedicated passage; the colour is derived from the chapter's own facts: chlorine displaces bromide (Section 13.4: Cl2 + 2Br− → 2Cl− + Br2), and bromine itself is the reddish-brown liquid whose vapour is orange (Sections 13.1–13.2, Figure 13.1). So a colourless bromide solution (e.g. KBr) with chlorine water goes orange-brown as free bromine is liberated.

7. How are the halogen acids are ionized in water?

⚠️ The chapter has no dedicated passage on the ionisation of halogen acids — Section 13.5 only says hydrogen halides dissolve in water to form hydrohalic acids. The standard ionisation, consistent with the chapter, is: HX(g) + H2O(l) → H3O+(aq) + X−(aq) (in short form, HX → H+ + X−). HCl, HBr and HI ionise almost completely (strong acids), while HF ionises only partially (weak acid) — which is the subject of the next question. The extent of ionisation follows the H–X bond strength of Table 13.5: the weaker the bond, the more completely it breaks in water.

8. Why HF is weaker acid than HCl?

⚠️ The chapter has no dedicated passage on why HF is a weaker acid than HCl; the answer is derived from its Table 13.5 bond energies. The H–F bond (569 kJ/mol) is much stronger than the H–Cl bond (431 kJ/mol) — fluorine is small and highly electronegative, so its orbital overlap with hydrogen is very strong (Section 13.6). In water, therefore, the H–F bond breaks and releases H+ far less readily than H–Cl does, so HF ionises only partially and behaves as a weak acid, while HCl ionises almost completely and is a strong acid. (Fluorine's high electronegativity alone would suggest the opposite; it is the bond strength that dominates here.)

9. Describe a simple chemical test that could be used to distinguish between aqueous solutions of potassium bromide and potassium iodide. Include the reagents and expected observations.

Test: the silver nitrate test (Section 13.8). Reagents: aqueous silver nitrate (AgNO3), then aqueous ammonia (dilute, then concentrated). Procedure and observations: add AgNO3 to each solution. KBr gives a cream-coloured precipitate of AgBr; KI gives a pale-yellow precipitate of AgI (equations: Ag+ + Br− → AgBr(s); Ag+ + I− → AgI(s)). Then add ammonia: the cream AgBr precipitate dissolves in concentrated ammonia (as [Ag(NH3)2]+, colourless solution) but not in dilute ammonia, while the pale-yellow AgI precipitate does not dissolve in either dilute or concentrated ammonia. The two differences together — precipitate colour and ammonia solubility — identify each solution unambiguously. (A second, equally valid distinguishing test from Section 13.4 is displacement: add chlorine water — KBr solution turns orange-brown (Br2 liberated) and KI solution turns brown/violet (I2 liberated) — but the silver nitrate test is the chapter's own identification test.)

10. Explain the chemical principles behind the use of chlorine as disinfectant in water purification. Include relevant chemical equations in your explanation.

Principle 1 — chlorine hydrolyses in water to give the active species. Cl2(g) + H2O(l) → HCl(aq) + HOCl(aq) (hypochlorous / chloric(I) acid), which partly dissociates: HOCl(aq) ⇌ H+(aq) + OCl−(aq) (hypochlorite ion). Principle 2 — the active species oxidise and destroy microbes. HOCl and OCl− oxidise essential cell components — proteins and lipids — disrupting cell function and causing cell death, oxidise and inactivate enzymes needed for survival and replication, and oxidise nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), preventing replication. Principle 3 — neutral HOCl is the more effective species, because its neutral charge lets it penetrate microbial cell walls easily, whereas the charged OCl− is held back. Principle 4 — conditions control effectiveness: at pH 6–7.5 HOCl predominates (most effective); above pH 7.5 OCl− predominates (less effective); a higher chlorine dose gives more HOCl/OCl−; and contact time must be long enough for the disinfectants to penetrate and kill bacteria, viruses and protozoa. In small quantities chlorine is harmless to humans but poisonous to disease-causing bacteria, and chlorination is relatively inexpensive — which is why treatment plants and swimming pools use it.

11. Describe one significant disadvantage associated with the use of chlorine in water purification.

⚠️ The chapter lists the advantages of chlorination (effective, relatively inexpensive) and the factors affecting it, but no dedicated passage on its disadvantages. One significant disadvantage, from standard water-chemistry knowledge, is that chlorine reacts with natural organic matter in the water to form disinfection by-products, notably trihalomethanes (e.g. chloroform), which are potentially harmful to health with long-term exposure — so the dose must be controlled, not simply increased. (Related drawbacks of the same kind: chlorine gives water an unpleasant taste and odour at higher doses, and it does not kill every pathogen — some protozoa, e.g. Cryptosporidium, are resistant to normal chlorination.)

12. What is disproportionation reaction? Give an example.

Definition: a reaction in which a single element undergoes both oxidation and reduction simultaneously (Section 13.10). Example: chlorine with cold aqueous sodium hydroxide: Cl2(g) + 2NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + NaClO(aq) + H2O(l) — chlorine starts at oxidation state 0 in Cl2, is oxidised to +1 in NaClO (sodium chlorate(I), formerly sodium hypochlorite) and simultaneously reduced to −1 in NaCl. The hot-NaOH reaction (3Cl2 + 6NaOH → 5NaCl + NaClO3 + 3H2O, chlorine 0 → −1 and 0 → +5) is a second example of the same kind.

13. Chlorine gas reacts differently with sodium hydroxide solution depending on the temperature and concentration.

With cold, dilute aqueous NaOH, chlorine gives sodium chloride and sodium chlorate(I) (hypochlorite): Cl2 + 2NaOH → NaCl + NaClO + H2O, with chlorine oxidised 0 → +1 and reduced 0 → −1. With hot, concentrated aqueous NaOH, chlorine gives sodium chloride and sodium chlorate(V): 3Cl2 + 6NaOH → 5NaCl + NaClO3 + 3H2O, with chlorine oxidised 0 → +5 and reduced 0 → −1. Both are disproportionation reactions (Section 13.10); temperature (and concentration) decides how far the oxidised half of the chlorine goes — to +1 in the cold, dilute case, to +5 in the hot, concentrated case. Note: the book's section headings say "cold" and "hot" aqueous NaOH; the dilute/concentrated pairing is the wording of this exercise question (and of question 14 below), and is answered as asked.

14. Write balanced chemical equations for the reaction of chlorine (Cl2) with: (i) Cold, dilute sodium hydroxide (NaOH). (ii) Hot, concentrated sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

(i) Cold, dilute NaOH: Cl2(g) + 2NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + NaClO(aq) + H2O(l). (ii) Hot, concentrated NaOH: 3Cl2(g) + 6NaOH(aq) → 5NaCl(aq) + NaClO3(aq) + 3H2O(l). Check the balancing: (i) Cl 2 = 1 + 1, Na 2 = 1 + 1, O 2 = 1 + 1, H 2 = 2. (ii) Cl 6 = 5 + 1, Na 6 = 5 + 1, O 6 = 3 + 3, H 6 = 6.

15. For each reaction in question 14, identify the oxidation states of chlorine in the reactant (Cl2) and in each of the chlorine-containing products. Use these oxidation states to explain why both reactions are classified as disproportionation reactions.

(i) Cold, dilute NaOH: chlorine in the reactant Cl2 = 0 (elemental form). Products: chlorine in NaCl = −1; chlorine in NaClO = +1. (ii) Hot, concentrated NaOH: chlorine in Cl2 = 0. Products: chlorine in NaCl = −1; chlorine in NaClO3 = +5. Why disproportionation: disproportionation means one element is simultaneously oxidised and reduced. In (i), chlorine atoms starting at 0 split into two groups — some are reduced (0 → −1, gaining an electron, in NaCl) and some are oxidised (0 → +1, losing an electron, in NaClO). In (ii) the same split happens with a bigger oxidation jump (0 → +5 in NaClO3 alongside 0 → −1 in NaCl). Because the same element, chlorine, both gains and loses electrons in a single reaction, both reactions are disproportionation reactions.

Section 3 — Long (Descriptive) Questions — English
LONG ANSWERS — ENGLISH
1. (Book Q.3) Describe and explain the relative thermal stabilities of the halogen hydrides in terms of bonds strength.

The thermal stability of a hydrogen halide HX is decided by how strong its H–X bond is: the stronger the bond, the more heat is needed to break it, so the more thermally stable the compound (Section 13.6). The order is HF > HCl > HBr > HI, and the bond dissociation energies of Table 13.5 prove it: H–F 569, H–Cl 431, H–Br 366, H–I 299 kJ/mol. HF is the most stable: fluorine is small and highly electronegative, so the hydrogen and fluorine orbitals overlap strongly and make a very strong H–F bond — the hardest in the series to break by heating. HCl is next: chlorine is larger than fluorine, so the H–Cl bond is weaker (431) than H–F, but still stronger than the rest. HBr is weaker still: bromine's larger radius gives reduced orbital overlap and a bond energy of only 366. HI is the least stable: iodine's very large radius gives poor orbital overlap, the weakest bond in the series (299), and so HI breaks apart most easily on heating. In short, down the group the halogen atom gets bigger, orbital overlap gets poorer, bond strength falls, and thermal stability falls with it — one trend, one explanation, four numbers to quote.

2. (Book Q.4) Discuss the relative reactivity of the halogen elements as oxidizing agents. Arrange F2, Cl2, Br2, I2 in increasing order of the oxidizing power.

Increasing order of oxidising power: I2 < Br2 < Cl2 < F2 (i.e. decreasing order F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2). All free halogens act as oxidising agents when they react with metals and most non-metals: they gain electrons and are converted to halide ions (e.g. 2Na + Cl2 → 2NaCl). Their reactivity as oxidisers is directly related to their ability to acquire an electron and form a halide ion. Fluorine has the highest tendency to acquire an electron and form fluoride, so it is the most powerful oxidising agent: it oxidises and displaces all other halide ions from solution (F2 + Cl− → F− + Cl2; likewise with Br− and I−). Chlorine displaces Br− and I− but not F−; bromine displaces only I−; iodine displaces no halide ion. The standard reduction potentials (Table 13.4) measure the same order: F2 +2.87 V, Cl2 +1.36 V, Br2 +1.07 V, I2 +0.54 V — the more positive the E°, the stronger the oxidiser. The oxidising power depends on several factors together: energy of dissociation (a weak X–X bond, like F–F at 156 kJ/mol, breaks easily), electron affinity of the atoms, hydration energy of the ions formed, and heats of vaporisation (for Br2 and I2). A halogen with low dissociation energy, high electron affinity and high hydration energy of its ions has high oxidising power — fluorine scores on all of these, iodine on none, which is why the order falls steadily down the group.

3. (Book Q.5) Discuss the reducing power of halide ions with relevant reactions. Also explain the factors affecting it.

Order of reducing power: I− > Br− > Cl− > F− (Section 13.7) — the exact mirror image of the halogen oxidising order. Reactions that prove it: the cleanest proof is the halides' reaction with concentrated sulfuric acid (Section 13.9). Fluoride and chloride only displace the acid's proton — NaF + H2SO4 → NaHSO4 + HF; NaCl + H2SO4 → NaHSO4 + HCl — with no redox at all, because HF and HCl are too weak as reducing agents to reduce the acid further. Bromide goes further: after forming HBr, it reduces the acid to sulfur dioxide and is itself oxidised to bromine — 2HBr + H2SO4 → Br2 + 2SO2 + 2H2O (sulfur +6 → +4). Iodide goes furthest of all: 8HI + H2SO4 → 4I2 + H2S + 4H2O (sulfur +6 → −2). The displacement reactions of Section 13.4 prove the same order from the other side: a stronger oxidiser (e.g. Br2) takes electrons from a stronger reducer's ion (I−) — Br2 + 2I− → 2Br− + I2 — because iodide gives up its electron most easily. Factors affecting reducing power: (1) Electronegativity — it falls down the group, so the larger halides hold their extra electron less tightly and donate it more easily; fluorine's very high electronegativity is why fluoride holds on tightest. (2) Atomic/ionic radius — it rises down the group, so the extra electron sits further from the nucleus and is less strongly attracted. (3) Charge density — the small fluoride ion has a high charge density, which stabilises it and reduces its tendency to lose an electron; the large iodide ion has a low charge density and loses its electron readily. (4) Bond strength to the extra electron — the strong bond between fluorine and its extra electron makes fluoride donation difficult, while the corresponding hold weakens down the group. Together these factors explain why reducing power rises steadily from fluoride (weakest) to iodide (strongest).

Summary. The halogens are Group 17, the very reactive non-metals that all exist as diatomic molecules X2 and all need just one electron to complete their octet (outer configuration ns2np5). The chapter is built on a handful of trends that all run in the same direction down the group, plus one famous exception. Colours and states: F2 pale-yellow gas, Cl2 greenish-yellow gas, Br2 reddish-brown volatile liquid, I2 shiny greyish-black solid subliming to violet vapour — colours darken down the group because electron transitions change how light is absorbed; the last two members, At and Ts, are rare and radioactive. Volatility falls Cl2 → Br2 → I2 because bigger, more polarizable molecules have stronger instantaneous dipole–induced dipole (London) forces and higher boiling points (−35, 59, 183 °C). Bond strength of X2 falls Cl2 (243) → Br2 (193) → I2 (151) as atoms get bigger — except fluorine, whose F–F bond is only 156 because lone-pair repulsion between its tiny atoms weakens it. Oxidising power falls F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2 (E° +2.87 → +0.54 V), and the displacement rule follows: a higher halogen displaces a lower halide, never the reverse. With hydrogen, reactivity falls the same way — F2 explosive in cold and dark, Cl2 needing UV/spark, Br2 needing heat, I2 needing high temperature plus catalyst and still slow and reversible — giving colourless HX gases that form hydrohalic acids. Thermal stability of HX follows H–X bond strength: HF (569) > HCl (431) > HBr (366) > HI (299). Reducing power of the ions runs the opposite way: I− > Br− > Cl− > F−, because electronegativity falls, radius rises and charge density falls. The two identification reactions prove that order in the lab: with AgNO3 then ammonia — F− no precipitate, Cl− white AgCl soluble in dilute ammonia, Br− cream AgBr soluble only in concentrated ammonia, I− pale-yellow AgI insoluble in ammonia; and with concentrated H2SO4 — F−/Cl− only HF/HCl fumes, Br− brown Br2 + SO2 smell (S +6 → +4), I− purple I2 + H2S smell (S +6 → −2). Chlorine's disproportionation with NaOH shows temperature deciding the product: cold → NaCl + NaClO (0 → −1 and +1), hot → 5NaCl + NaClO3 (0 → −1 and +5). Water purification closes the chapter: Cl2 + H2O → HCl + HOCl, HOCl ⇌ H+ + OCl−; neutral HOCl penetrates cell walls best and oxidises proteins, lipids, enzymes and DNA/RNA; effectiveness is highest at pH 6–7.5 (HOCl predominates), rises with dose, and needs enough contact time.

Revision guidance. Learn the chapter as four orders and their numbers, because the exam asks them in exactly that form: volatility Cl2 > Br2 > I2 (bp −35, 59, 183); X–X bond energy Cl2 243 > Br2 193 > I2 151, with F2 156 as the exception; oxidising power F2 > Cl2 > Br2 > I2 (E° +2.87, +1.36, +1.07, +0.54) and reducing power the reverse (I− > Br− > Cl− > F−); H–X stability HF 569 > HCl 431 > HBr 366 > HI 299. Then practise the two laboratory tables from memory — AgX colours and ammonia solubility (white/dilute, cream/concentrated, pale-yellow/never) and the concentrated-acid staircase (fumes only, SO2, H2S) — and the two disproportionation equations with their oxidation states (cold 0 → −1/+1, hot 0 → −1/+5). Finally, re-read the flagged ⚠️ notes before the exam: the "chlorine being a liquid" slip, the "2AgX" misprint, the duplicated (b) in MCQ 5, the unbalanced equation in short question 2, the loosely worded MCQ 8 (bond strength marked, electronegativity also a real factor), and the questions with no dedicated book passage (MCQ 7 acid strength, short 5 antiseptic, short 6 colour change, short 7–8 ionisation and HF vs HCl, short 11 chlorination disadvantage, Quick Check 13.4(b) solubility cause) — so that a book slip or a derived answer never costs you marks.
