A chemistry laboratory is a chemist's workshop. It is a place where a student is trained to observe the physical and chemical characteristics of substances by following definite procedures. Before starting laboratory work, a student should get familiar with the layout of the laboratory and the various fittings provided on the laboratory table as well as the side shelves.
The book gives ten general instructions:
📌 Note (book's own rule): never work alone, and never guess with an unfamiliar apparatus — asking the instructor is part of good lab practice, not a weakness.
Most hazards which we might face while working in the laboratory fall into three categories: physical, chemical and biological hazards.
16.2.1 Physical Hazards. The most common physical hazards are slips and falls when working on a wet floor. A worker must take all types of precautions to avoid accidents related to physical hazards such as slipping, pulling, falling etc. A worker should wear cut-resistant gloves while handling the broken glassware to prevent cuts, abrasions and skin damage. It should be mandatory for the laboratory staff to dispose off broken glassware in a special container to prevent injury.
16.2.2 Chemical Hazards. A laboratory worker must use the chemicals according to the standard procedures keeping in view the particular hazards and precautions required for their safe use. The book's Figure 16.1 shows the pictograms of chemical hazards: Explosive, Flammable, Oxidising, Compressed Gas, Corrosive, Toxic, Irritant, Environmentally Damaging and Health Hazard. Each red diamond pictogram on a bottle warns about one kind of danger — reading it before use is itself a safety precaution.
16.2.3 Biological Hazards. The most common biological hazards are allergens, microbes including virus and bacteria. These are transferred from animals, plants, water and air to human.
Chemical waste cannot be disposed off in bins or sewer system. Most chemical wastes must be disposed off keeping in view the rules and regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):
This is the same rule as instruction (ix) in 16.1: never pour chemicals down the drain and never use the sewer for chemical waste.
Every laboratory must have a first aid box. Common accidents and their first aid treatments are given in the book's Table 16.1:
📌 Quick Check 16.1 (book): mention common types of hazards; how chemical waste is disposed off; how an H2SO4 burn is treated in the lab (acid burn: ice-cold water, then saturated sodium bicarbonate, then water again); what are different types of burns (dry-heat, acid, alkali, bromine).
Volumetric analysis is used to find the concentrations of solutions by means of a technique known as titration. In this technique a solution of unknown concentration is combined slowly and carefully with a known volume of a standard solution until a colour change shows the completion of the reaction. The substance which indicates the completion of reaction by the change in its colour is called an indicator. The moment at which the indicator changes colour is called the end point. Either acidic or basic solution can be taken in a burette with the other solution taken in a conical or a titration flask.
📌 Did you know? (book's side note) Phenolphthalein solution is prepared by adding one gram of the indicator in 500 cm3 of 50% ethanol. Use only one to two drops in 10 cm3 of the solution to be titrated. The color change is from pink to colorless as the pH decreases. The light pink color which marks the end point tends to fade gradually due to the interference of atmospheric carbon dioxide which slowly dissolves in the solution.
Materials required: burette, pipette, funnel, conical flask, HCl solution, NaOH solution, phenolphthalein.
Procedure of titration (book, 13 steps):
Again, note down the burette reading; this will be the final reading. The difference of final and initial readings of burette will give the volume of the acid used. Repeat the titration to get accurate and concordant readings. Take at least three concordant readings which agree with one another within 0.1 cm3.
Chemical equation: NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)
Calculation (book's molarity equation): M1V1/n1 = M2V2/n2, where M1 = molarity of acid solution, V1 = volume of acid used, n1 = number of moles of acid in the balanced equation, M2 = molarity of base solution, V2 = volume of base used, n2 = number of moles of base in the balanced equation. So M2 = (M1V1/n1) × (n2/V2).
Worked example (book's formula applied — not book data): 10 cm3 of NaOH is titrated against 0.10 M HCl and the concordant titre is 20.0 cm3. Here n1 = n2 = 1, so M2 = 0.10 × 20.0 / 10.0 = 0.20 M NaOH.
📌 Quick Check 16.2 (book): define indicator and end point (above); what is meant by concordant reading (readings agreeing within 0.1 cm3); how the volume of the titrant used is calculated (final reading minus initial reading).
NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)
a) Identification of carbonate CO32− radical. Take about 2 g of solid carbonate sample in a clean test tube and then add about 5 cm3 of dilute HCl solution. Pass the gas evolved in the above step through a solution of lime water. Observation: effervescence takes place during which a gas evolves briskly, that turns lime water milky. Inference: carbonate (CO32−) is indicated. Reactions: CO32−(aq) + 2H+(aq) → H2O(l) + CO2(g); Ca(OH)2(aq) + CO2(g) → CaCO3 (white ppt) + H2O(l).
b) Identification of chloride (Cl−), bromide (Br−) and iodide (I−) radicals. Take 2 g of solid sample in a test tube and add 5 cm3 of distilled water to make the aqueous solution. Add a few drops of dil. HNO3 solution to acidify the solution of the salt, finally add about 5 cm3 of aqueous AgNO3. Observations: a thick white precipitate is formed which dissolves in aq. NH3 → Cl− indicated; a thick cream-yellow precipitate is formed → Br− indicated; a bright yellow precipitate is formed → I− indicated. Reactions: Ag+(aq) + Cl−(aq) → AgCl(s) (white ppt); Ag+(aq) + Br−(aq) → AgBr(s) (cream-yellow ppt); Ag+(aq) + I−(aq) → AgI(s) (bright yellow ppt).
📌 Did you know? (book's side note) In the above tests for the detection of halide ions, dilute nitric acid is added to prevent the precipitation of carbonate ions along with halide ions.
c) Identification of nitrate (NO3−) radical. Take 2 g of solid sample in a clean test tube and dissolve it in 5 cm3 distilled water. Add to it 5 cm3 of sodium hydroxide solution. Finally add 3 g of powdered aluminium metal. Observation: a characteristic smell of NH3 gas is felt near the mouth of test tube. This gas turns red litmus paper blue. Inference: NO3− indicated. Aluminium metal reduces nitrate ions to ammonium ions which then react with aqueous NaOH to evolve ammonia gas. Reaction: 3NO3−(aq) + 8Al(s) + 5OH−(aq) + 18H2O(l) → 3NH3(g) + 8[Al(OH)4]−(aq).
d) Identification of sulphate (SO42−) radical. Take 3 g of solid sample in a clean test tube. Dissolve it in 5 cm3 of distilled water. Acidify the solution with a few drops of dil. HNO3 and then add 5 cm3 barium nitrate solution. Observation: a heavy white precipitate of BaSO4 is formed. Inference: SO42− indicated. Reaction: SO42−(aq) + Ba2+(aq) → BaSO4(s) (white ppt).
📌 Did you know? (book's side note) Dilute nitric acid is added to destroy any carbonate ions present in the solution as an impurity.
📌 Gap note (honest): the chapter's Student Learning Outcomes also list sulphite SO32−, but section 16.6 in the book gives no separate sulphite test — do not confuse the sulphate test above (heavy white BaSO4 ppt) with a sulphite test. Quick Check 16.3 also asks about distinguishing carbonate from bicarbonate, the ring test, and water-insoluble sulphates; the chapter text gives no dedicated passage for those three items, so they are not presented here as book content.
a) Identification of aluminium (Al3+) radical. Take 4 g of solid sample in a clean test tube. Dissolve it in about 10 cm3 distilled water. Divide this solution into two parts for further tests. To one part, add about 5 cm3 NaOH solution: a white gelatinous precipitate is formed → Al3+ indicated. To the second part, add a few drops of aqueous ammonia: a white precipitate is formed → Al3+ indicated. Reaction: Al3+(aq) + 3OH−(aq) → Al(OH)3(s) (white ppt).
b) Identification of ammonium (NH4+) radical. Take 4 g of sample in a clean test tube. Dissolve it in 10 cm3 distilled water. Add NaOH solution and gently heat it. Observation: ammonia gas is evolved with a distinct smell. Ammonia gas turns moist red litmus blue. Inference: NH4+ indicated. Reaction: NH4+(aq) + OH−(aq) → NH3(g) + H2O(l).
c) Identification of calcium (Ca2+) radical. Take 4 g solid sample in a clean test tube. Dissolve it in 10 cm3 distilled water. Make two parts of this solution for further tests. To one part, add NaOH solution: white precipitate is formed which does not dissolve in excess of NaOH solution → Ca2+ indicated. To the second part, add aqueous ammonia: only a slight turbidity appears or no precipitate is formed → Ca2+ indicated. Reaction: Ca2+(aq) + 2OH−(aq) → Ca(OH)2(s) (white ppt).
d) Identification of chromium radical (Cr3+). Add 4 g sample in a clean test tube. Dissolve it in 10 cm3 distilled water. Make two parts of the above solution for further tests. To one part, add NaOH solution: a green precipitate appears which turns into green solution when excess of NaOH is added → Cr3+ indicated. To the second part, add aqueous ammonia: green precipitate appears which is insoluble in excess of aqueous ammonia → Cr3+ indicated. Reaction: Cr3+(aq) + 3OH−(aq) → Cr(OH)3(s) (green ppt).
The pattern to remember: NaOH and aqueous ammonia are the two reagents, and the colour plus the behaviour in excess reagent is what identifies the cation — a confirmatory test is exactly this second, distinguishing check.
e) Identification of copper radical (Cu2+). Add 4 g solid sample in a clean test tube. Dissolve it in 10 cm3 distilled water. Make two parts of the above solution for further tests. To first part, add NaOH solution: light-blue precipitate is formed → Cu2+ indicated. To the second part, add aqueous ammonia: deep blue solution is formed → Cu2+ indicated. Reaction: Cu2+(aq) + 2OH−(aq) → Cu(OH)2(s) (blue ppt).
f) Identification of iron (II) radical (Fe2+). Take 4 g sample in a clean test tube. Dissolve it in 10 cm3 distilled water. Make two portions of the solution for further tests. To one portion, add NaOH solution: green precipitate is formed which is turned into orange brown precipitate after some time → Fe2+ indicated. To second portion, add aqueous ammonia: white gelatinous precipitate of Fe(OH)2 is formed which quickly oxidizes to form red brown precipitate of Fe(OH)3 → Fe2+ indicated. Reaction: Fe2+(aq) + 2OH−(aq) → Fe(OH)2(s) (green ppt).
g) Identification of Fe(III) radical (Fe3+). Take 2 g FeCl3 in a clean test tube. Dissolve it in 10 cm3 distilled water. Make two portions of the solution for further tests. To one portion, add NaOH solution: orange brown precipitate is formed → Fe3+ indicated. To the second portion, add aqueous ammonia: orange brown precipitate is formed → Fe3+ indicated. Reaction: Fe3+(aq) + 3OH−(aq) → Fe(OH)3(s) (orange brown ppt).
h) Identification of zinc radical (Zn2+). Take 4 g solid sample in a clean test tube. Dissolve it in 10 cm3 distilled water. Make two portions of the above solution for further tests. To one portion add NaOH solution: white precipitate is formed which is soluble in excess of NaOH solution → Zn2+ indicated. To second portion add aqueous ammonia: white precipitate is formed which dissolves in excess of ammonia → Zn2+ indicated. Reaction: Zn2+(aq) + 2OH−(aq) → Zn(OH)2(s) (white ppt).
How to tell the white precipitates apart: Ca2+ white ppt does not dissolve in excess NaOH; Al3+ white gelatinous ppt forms with both reagents; Zn2+ white ppt dissolves in excess of both NaOH and ammonia. That excess-reagent behaviour is the confirmatory distinction.
📌 Quick Check 16.4 (book): what is lake test — give equation; how ammonium ion is indicated (NaOH + gentle heat → NH3 smell, moist red litmus blue); how ferrous (Fe2+) and ferric (Fe3+) radicals are distinguished (green ppt turning orange-brown vs orange-brown at once); what happens when aq. NH3 is added to Cu2+ solution in limited and excess quantities (light-blue ppt first, then deep blue solution in excess). Note: the chapter text gives no dedicated passage explaining the lake test itself, so it is flagged here as a Quick Check item without a book passage, not as book content.
Beyond the named experiments, the chapter's Student Learning Outcomes (C-11-F-01 to C-11-F-21) require practical skills that run through the whole chapter:
The titration chapter also models the reading skills examiners check: use an anti-parallax card or white paper when noting a burette reading, remove air bubbles from the nozzle, check the burette does not leak, and swirl the flask for thorough mixing.
Book's official exercise, printed pages 338–339 (Chapter 16, printed pages 326–339). Multiple Choice Questions Q.1 (I–VII), Short Answer Questions Q.2 (a–k), Descriptive Questions Q.3–Q.6 — copied exactly from the book, with answers written from the chapter content you have just read.
Note: the book's exercise for this chapter has no inquisitive section and no numerical-problem section, so none has been invented here. The titration calculation is covered in Section 16.5 above, with a worked example using the book's molarity equation. Where an answer needs knowledge beyond a dedicated passage in this chapter, the answer says so plainly instead of pretending the book states it.
Four choices are given for each question. Select the correct choice.
I. While taking a reading with a burette, why is it always advisable to read the lower meniscus for the colorless liquids and the upper meniscus for the coloured liquids?
Answer: (d) because of the parallax effect — a burette reading must be taken at eye level (the book's procedure says to use an anti-parallax card or white paper) so that parallax error does not shift the reading; for a coloured liquid the lower meniscus cannot be seen clearly, so the upper meniscus is read instead.
II. Why phenolphthalein indicator is more appropriate to use during the titrations which involve a strong acid and a strong base?
Answer: (b) because the pH at the equivalence point as well as the pH over where the colour of phenolphthalein changes match each-other. — for a strong acid–strong base titration the equivalence point is at pH 7 with a very sharp pH jump, which passes through phenolphthalein's colour-change range, so the pink-to-colourless end point (Section 16.5) coincides with equivalence. Note: the chapter defines indicator and end point and uses phenolphthalein, but it gives no dedicated passage on pH ranges — this matching-range reason is the standard indicator principle behind the book's choice.
III. Which cation gives a white gelatinous precipitate upon the addition of aqueous ammonia?
Answer: (d) Al3+ — Section 16.7(a): Al3+ with aqueous ammonia gives a white precipitate, Al(OH)3; with NaOH it is the white gelatinous precipitate. Zn2+ also gives a white precipitate with ammonia, but it dissolves in excess ammonia, while the book's Al3+ precipitate is the gelatinous one.
IV. Addition of NH4OH to an aqueous solution of a cation gives a green precipitate which turns brown upon standing. Which basic radical is indicated?
Answer: (c) Fe2+ — Fe2+ is the iron(II) ion whose hydroxide is green and oxidises on standing to brown Fe(OH)3. The book (Section 16.7(f)) shows this signature directly: with NaOH, Fe2+ gives a green precipitate which turns into an orange-brown precipitate after some time, and its ammonia precipitate likewise oxidises quickly to red-brown Fe(OH)3; Fe3+ by contrast gives orange-brown at once, and Cr3+ stays green.
V. On dry heating test for salt analysis, the evolution of a colorless, odorless gas that turns lime water milky suggests the presence of:
Answer: (c) Carbonate ion (CO32−) — the colourless, odourless gas that turns lime water milky is CO2, and Section 16.6(a) identifies carbonate by exactly this test: the evolved gas turns lime water milky (CaCO3 white ppt).
VI. The chromyl chloride test is a specific confirmatory test for:
Answer: (c) Chloride ions (Cl−) — Note: this chapter's text gives no dedicated passage on the chromyl chloride test (Section 16.6(b) identifies chloride with AgNO3 instead). The answer is the standard salt-analysis fact: in the chromyl chloride test, chloride forms red vapours of chromyl chloride (CrO2Cl2), which is the specific confirmatory test for Cl−; bromide and iodide do not give it.
VII. The brown ring test is a confirmatory test for which acid radical?
Answer: (b) Nitrate (NO3−) — Note: this chapter's text gives no dedicated passage on the brown ring test (Section 16.6(c) identifies nitrate by the aluminium/NaOH → ammonia test instead). The answer is the standard salt-analysis fact: the brown ring formed at the junction of the two layers is the confirmatory test for nitrate, NO3−.
Attempt the following short-answer questions:
Methyl orange is used for a strong acid vs weak base titration. Note: this chapter uses phenolphthalein for the strong acid–strong base titration (Section 16.5) and gives no dedicated passage on methyl orange; the answer follows the standard indicator principle — methyl orange changes colour in the acidic pH range where a strong acid–weak base equivalence point lies, whereas phenolphthalein's range is too high for it.
An indicator is suitable when the pH at the equivalence point falls inside its colour-change range. A weak acid titrated with a strong base has an alkaline equivalence point (the salt formed hydrolyses to give OH−), which lies in phenolphthalein's range (pink in alkali, colourless in acid), so the end point is sharp. A strong acid titrated with a weak base has an acidic equivalence point, below phenolphthalein's range, so phenolphthalein would change colour too late and gradually, not at equivalence. Note: the chapter defines indicator/end point and uses phenolphthalein (Section 16.5) but gives no dedicated passage on pH ranges — this is the standard indicator mechanism behind the choice.
Each indicator is itself a weak acid or weak base whose two forms (acid form and base form) have different colours. It changes colour when the pH passes the point where its two forms are present in comparable amounts — that point is set by the indicator's own ionisation constant, which is different for every indicator. So phenolphthalein, methyl orange and others each have their own characteristic pH range. Note: the chapter defines an indicator as a substance indicating completion by colour change (Section 16.5) but gives no dedicated passage on why ranges differ — this is the standard mechanism.
Yes. With dilute solutions the titre volume is larger, so a small reading error (for example one drop, or 0.1 cm3) is a much smaller fraction of the total volume — the percentage error is lower and concordant readings within 0.1 cm3 are meaningful. Dilute solutions are also safer and easier to control drop by drop near the end point, giving a sharper, persistent end point. Note: the chapter stresses concordant readings and careful dropwise addition (Section 16.5) but gives no dedicated passage stating the dilute-solution rule — this reason follows from its accuracy requirements.
Use the second reagent, aqueous ammonia, and the behaviour in excess reagent (Section 16.7): Ca2+ — white ppt with NaOH that does not dissolve in excess NaOH, and with aqueous ammonia only a slight turbidity or no precipitate. Al3+ — white gelatinous ppt with NaOH, and a white precipitate with aqueous ammonia. Zn2+ — white ppt with NaOH that dissolves in excess NaOH, and a white ppt with aqueous ammonia that dissolves in excess ammonia. So: dissolves in excess NaOH and excess ammonia → Zn2+; white ppt with ammonia but not dissolving in excess NaOH → Al3+ (with the Ca2+ ammonia check as the extra distinction); no real precipitate with ammonia → Ca2+.
With NaOH solution (Section 16.7(f)–(g)): Fe2+ gives a green precipitate of Fe(OH)2 which turns into an orange-brown precipitate after some time (it oxidises to Fe(OH)3). Fe3+ gives an orange-brown precipitate of Fe(OH)3 at once. The same distinction holds with aqueous ammonia: Fe2+ first gives a white gelatinous Fe(OH)2 precipitate which quickly oxidises to red-brown Fe(OH)3, while Fe3+ gives orange-brown immediately.
The book's observation (Section 16.7(c)) is that with aqueous ammonia, Ca2+ gives only a slight turbidity or no precipitate. The reason is that aqueous ammonia is a weak base: it supplies only a low concentration of OH− ions, and calcium hydroxide is sufficiently soluble that this low OH− concentration does not throw down a proper Ca(OH)2 precipitate (unlike the strong base NaOH, which does). Note: the chapter states the observation, not this explanation — the explanation is the standard weak-base mechanism behind it.
By the chapter's own titration method (Section 16.5), applied to vinegar: pipette a known volume (for example 10 cm3) of the vinegar solution into a conical flask, add 1–2 drops of phenolphthalein, and titrate it against a standard NaOH solution of known molarity from a burette until the persistent light-pink end point. Take at least three concordant readings, find the volume of NaOH used (final minus initial reading), then use the book's molarity equation M1V1/n1 = M2V2/n2 with the balanced equation CH3COOH + NaOH → CH3COONa + H2O (n1 = n2 = 1) to calculate the molarity of acetic acid. Note: the chapter gives the titration procedure and equation but no dedicated vinegar passage — this is that procedure applied to vinegar.
Always add the acid slowly to water (never water to acid), with constant stirring, because dilution of a concentrated acid is strongly exothermic and water added to acid can boil and spatter acid onto the skin and eyes. Wear a lab coat and safety goggles, work in the presence of the instructor, keep the face away from the vessel, and report any spill or accident to the laboratory incharge at once. Note: the chapter's general instructions (Section 16.1) require goggles, lab coat, instructor presence and immediate reporting, but give no dedicated acid-dilution passage — the acid-to-water rule is the standard safety precaution that applies them.
Because the carbonate ion hydrolyses in water: CO32− + H2O ⇌ HCO3− + OH−. The hydroxide ions produced make the solution alkaline, so it behaves like a base (for example, it turns red litmus blue). Note: the chapter identifies carbonate and uses lime water and sodium carbonate chemistry (Section 16.6(a)) but gives no dedicated passage on salt hydrolysis — this is the standard hydrolysis mechanism.
It will absorb moisture and carbon dioxide from the air. The CO2 reacts: 2NaOH + CO2 → Na2CO3 + H2O, so the solution's NaOH concentration falls, it becomes contaminated with sodium carbonate, and a white crust of carbonate may form. That is why standard NaOH solutions must be kept in closed containers and their exact concentration checked by titration. Note: the chapter gives no dedicated passage on open NaOH (its phenolphthalein side note in Section 16.5 does mention atmospheric CO2 dissolving in solution and fading the end point) — this answer extends that same CO2-absorption fact to the stored solution.
Physical hazards (Section 16.2.1): (1) slips and falls when working on a wet floor; (2) cuts, abrasions and skin damage from handling broken glassware (cut-resistant gloves must be worn, and broken glassware disposed off in a special container). Chemical hazards (Section 16.2.2): (1) flammable chemicals that can catch fire, and (2) corrosive chemicals that damage skin and materials — the book's pictograms also list explosive, oxidising, compressed gas, toxic, irritant, environmentally damaging and health-hazard chemicals, all of which must be used by standard procedures with their required precautions. Biological hazards (Section 16.2.3): (1) allergens, and (2) microbes including virus and bacteria, transferred from animals, plants, water and air to humans.
Every laboratory must have a first aid box, and the book's Table 16.1 (Section 16.4) manages the common accidents as follows. Cuts: minor cuts — remove any glass piece, apply methylated spirit or tincture iodine with cotton (both disinfectants); serious cuts — apply pressure for about 10 minutes to stop bleeding and consult a doctor. Eye injuries: acid in the eye — wash thoroughly with water then 1% sodium bicarbonate solution; alkali in the eye — wash with water then 1% boric acid solution; foreign particle — do not rub, remove carefully with a soft handkerchief then wash with water; soreness — a drop of olive oil, eyes kept closed for some time. Burns: dry heat (flame, hot object) — burnol or mustard oil; acid burns — wash freely with ice-cold water, then saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, then water again; alkali burns — wash freely with water, then 1% acetic acid solution, then water, dry the skin and apply burnol; bromine burns — wash fully with 2% ammonia solution, apply glycerin, wipe it off after some time and apply burnol. Poisons: poison swallowed — spit immediately, wash the mouth repeatedly with water; acid swallowed — drink a lot of water or lime water or milk of magnesia; caustic alkalies swallowed — drink a lot of water, then a glass of lemon or orange juice; salt of heavy metals swallowed — take milk or the white part of an egg. Fire: clothes on fire — do not run, wrap in a blanket or dry cotton cloth, lie down on the floor; beaker of inflammable liquid on fire — cover with a duster or damp cloth to cut off oxygen; spirit or oil on fire — throw a mixture of sand and sodium bicarbonate, never water (it spreads the fire); electric parts on fire — switch off the supply immediately and throw sand, never water.
i) CO32− (Section 16.6(a)): add dilute HCl to about 2 g of the solid sample; effervescence with brisk evolution of a gas that turns lime water milky confirms carbonate. CO32− + 2H+ → H2O + CO2; Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 (white ppt) + H2O. ii) Cl− (Section 16.6(b)): dissolve 2 g of sample in 5 cm3 distilled water, acidify with a few drops of dilute HNO3 (this prevents carbonate precipitating with the halide), then add about 5 cm3 aqueous AgNO3; a thick white precipitate of AgCl which dissolves in aqueous NH3 confirms chloride (the cream-yellow and bright-yellow precipitates in the same test would indicate Br− and I− instead). iii) NO3− (Section 16.6(c)): dissolve 2 g of sample in 5 cm3 distilled water, add 5 cm3 NaOH solution and 3 g powdered aluminium metal; aluminium reduces nitrate to ammonium ions, which react with NaOH to evolve NH3 gas — its characteristic smell at the mouth of the test tube, turning moist red litmus blue, confirms nitrate. 3NO3− + 8Al + 5OH− + 18H2O → 3NH3 + 8[Al(OH)4]−. iv) SO42− (Section 16.6(d)): dissolve 3 g of sample in 5 cm3 distilled water, acidify with a few drops of dilute HNO3 (to destroy any carbonate impurity), then add 5 cm3 barium nitrate solution; a heavy white precipitate of BaSO4 confirms sulphate. SO42− + Ba2+ → BaSO4 (white ppt).
i) Cu2+ (Section 16.7(e)): dissolve 4 g of sample in 10 cm3 distilled water and split into two parts. With NaOH solution a light-blue precipitate of Cu(OH)2 is formed; with aqueous ammonia a deep blue solution is formed. Both together confirm Cu2+. Cu2+ + 2OH− → Cu(OH)2 (blue ppt). ii) Al3+ (Section 16.7(a)): dissolve 4 g of sample in about 10 cm3 distilled water and split into two parts. With about 5 cm3 NaOH solution a white gelatinous precipitate is formed; with a few drops of aqueous ammonia a white precipitate is formed. Both together confirm Al3+. Al3+ + 3OH− → Al(OH)3 (white ppt). iii) Fe3+ (Section 16.7(g)): dissolve 2 g FeCl3 in 10 cm3 distilled water and split into two portions. With NaOH solution an orange-brown precipitate is formed; with aqueous ammonia an orange-brown precipitate is formed. The immediate orange-brown colour with both reagents — unlike Fe2+, which first gives green — confirms Fe3+. Fe3+ + 3OH− → Fe(OH)3 (orange-brown ppt). iv) Zn2+ (Section 16.7(h)): dissolve 4 g of sample in 10 cm3 distilled water and split into two portions. With NaOH solution a white precipitate is formed which is soluble in excess NaOH solution; with aqueous ammonia a white precipitate is formed which dissolves in excess ammonia. Dissolving in excess of both reagents is what distinguishes Zn2+ from the other white precipitates (Ca2+ does not dissolve in excess NaOH). Zn2+ + 2OH− → Zn(OH)2 (white ppt).
Summary: This last chapter of the Part 1 Chemistry book turns lab work itself into the subject. It starts with the ten general instructions (responsible conduct, never work alone, lab coat and goggles, know the hazards first, no crowding, no food, no tasting or smelling, report every accident, ask the instructor about unfamiliar apparatus, never pour chemicals down drains, follow warning signs), then sorts hazards into physical (slips, falls, broken glassware), chemical (the nine pictograms: explosive, flammable, oxidising, compressed gas, corrosive, toxic, irritant, environmentally damaging, health hazard) and biological (allergens, virus and bacteria). Chemical waste follows the EPA system — proper container, label (type, date, place of origin), transfer to an allocated site, treatment (neutralisation, precipitation, ion exchange, oxidation, reduction). Table 16.1 gives first aid for cuts, eye injuries, burns, poisons and fire — including the golden rule that oil and electric fires never get water. Then comes the practical core: acid-base titration with phenolphthalein (indicator, end point, rough titration, concordant readings within 0.1 cm3, the molarity equation M1V1/n1 = M2V2/n2), anion tests (carbonate → CO2 milky lime water; halides → white/cream-yellow/bright-yellow silver precipitates; nitrate → ammonia smell and blue litmus; sulphate → heavy white BaSO4) and cation tests with NaOH and aqueous ammonia, where colour plus behaviour in excess reagent identifies all eight cations (Al3+, NH4+, Ca2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Zn2+).
Topics in this chapter: General instructions · Hazards · Waste disposal · First aid · Titration · Anion tests · Cations (I) · Cations (II) · Practical skills · Exercise
Revision guidance: memorise Table 16.1 as five rows (cuts, eyes, burns, poisons, fire) and the acid-vs-alkali first-aid pairs (acid → sodium bicarbonate; alkali → boric/acetic acid). For salt analysis, learn one line per ion — reagent, colour, excess behaviour — and practise the white-precipitate trio (Ca2+ vs Al3+ vs Zn2+) and the green-to-brown Fe2+ vs at-once-brown Fe3+ distinction, because examiners test exactly those confusions. For titration, practise the 13-step procedure in order and the molarity equation with the worked example in Section 16.5, and remember: rough titration first, then three concordant readings within 0.1 cm3.
