Look at your phone for a second. The app that wakes you up, the one that plays songs, the one your school uses for attendance — none of these appeared by magic. Somebody first asked, "What do people actually need?", then planned it, wrote code for it, tested it, and finally handed it over to users. That whole journey, from a need in someone's mind to a finished product in someone's hand, is what this chapter calls software development.
The book defines it in one clean line: software development is the process of creating computer programs designed to perform specific tasks. It involves writing code, testing it, and sorting out whatever issues turn up along the way. Notice the word process. It is not a single evening of typing. It is a sequence of stages — analysis, design, coding, testing and deployment — and every stage needs its own skills and its own tools.
Why does the order matter? Because a program that works once, on one computer, for one person, is not enough. The book stresses three qualities a good product must have: it should be reliable (it does not crash when you need it), maintainable (someone else can later fix or improve it without rebuilding it from scratch), and scalable (it still works when ten users become ten thousand). A school result app that freezes on result day has failed on all three counts, even if its code looked fine in class.
📌 Book note: the chapter's learning outcomes promise that by the end you will be able to define software development, describe the SDLC and its stages, compare Waterfall and Agile, plan a project, apply quality assurance, read UML diagrams, use design patterns, debug and test, and use tools like IDEs, compilers and source-code repositories. Keep that list in mind as a checklist while you read — every section below ticks one of those boxes.
If software development is a journey, the SDLC is its road map. The book defines the Software Development Life Cycle as a framework that lays out the processes an organisation uses to build an application from its first idea, through deployment, and into maintenance. It is called a cycle on purpose: software is rarely finished once and forgotten. Users ask for changes, mistakes surface, technology moves on — so the work loops back around again.
The SDLC has one primary purpose, and the book states it plainly: to deliver high-quality software that meets customer expectations, finishes within time and cost estimates, and works efficiently. Those three tests are worth memorising. A beautiful app delivered a year late has failed the time test. A cheap app that nobody can use has failed the quality test. A team that keeps all three in view is exactly what the SDLC is trying to produce.
Inside that road map sits a smaller idea: the framework. In software engineering, a framework is a standardised, reusable set of concepts, practices and tools that gives you a ready-made foundation. It hands you predefined components and architectures, so instead of reinventing everyday parts, you spend your energy on the code that is unique to your own application. The book's example is Django, a framework for websites: it already brings user login, database handling and page templates, so a developer building a site does not have to write those from scratch. Frameworks, the book says, promote efficiency, consistency and code reusability, and all three lift the overall quality and maintainability of the system.
Think of it like this: the SDLC tells you which steps to take and in what order, while a framework gives you ready-made parts to use while taking them. Confusing the two is a common exam mistake — one is a process, the other is a toolkit.
Every SDLC begins in the same place: asking people what they need. In the Requirement Gathering phase, the goal is to understand and collect what the software must achieve, and that means talking to the people who will use it and to the other stakeholders — anyone with a stake in the result, from a librarian to a school principal. The book names three key activities here. Interviews and surveys mean asking questions and collecting feedback from potential users to learn their needs and preferences. Observations mean watching how users work with the current system, so you spot problems and chances to improve that nobody thought to mention. Document review means reading existing reports and user manuals for extra information about the requirements.
Once gathered, requirements split into two types, and telling them apart is one of the most tested ideas in this chapter. Functional requirements describe the specific behaviours or functions of a system — what the system should do. They cover the tasks, services and functionalities the system must perform, and they define how the system interacts with its users or with other systems. The book's Library Management System example makes it concrete: user registration (students and faculty can register and create an account), book borrowing (users can search for books and borrow them), and inventory management (librarians can add, update and remove books).
Non-functional requirements are the other half, and students often mix them up. They define the quality attributes, performance criteria and constraints of the system — in plain words, how the system should perform a function, rather than what it should do. Same library, different lens: performance (handle up to 1000 simultaneous users without slowing down), reliability (be available 99.9% of the time, with minimal downtime), and security (user data encrypted, access controlled through secure authentication).
The book's Table 1.1 sums it up: functional = what the system should do, directly tied to user interactions and system tasks; non-functional = how it should perform, tied to performance, usability, reliability and so on. A quick self-test: "the app must let students borrow books" is functional; "the app must open in under two seconds" is non-functional. If you can sort any sentence into what versus how well, you have mastered this section.
Once you know what to build, you decide how it will look and work — that is the Design phase. The book lists four jobs here: create diagrams (for example a flowchart mapping the steps a program takes to finish a task, showing how parts connect), develop models (such as mockups of the user interface, showing what the program will look like and how users will interact with it), plan the architecture (the overall structure, and how components interact, so the program stays organised and runs smoothly), and specify requirements (stating clearly what each part must do, so nothing is overlooked). The book's Tidbits box puts it beautifully: think of this phase like designing a new house — you need blueprints showing where the rooms and furniture will go before you start building.
Next comes Coding / Development: based on those design specifications, programmers translate what the software should do, and how it should look, into a programming language. This is the stage most beginners picture when they hear "software development", but notice it is only one stage out of six. Good design is what stops coding from turning into guesswork.
Then Testing — the book calls it a quality check to make sure everything works as expected, checking the software to identify any bugs, errors or issues. It names three kinds: functionality testing (all features work according to the specifications), performance testing (it performs well under different conditions, such as high traffic or heavy data), and compatibility testing (it works on various devices and operating systems). A result app that works on the developer's laptop but breaks on a student's phone has failed compatibility testing.
Deployment is making the software available for users to access and use, in three steps: installation (putting it on the user's system or server, often with an installer that copies files and sets up configurations), configuration (adjusting it to the user's or organisation's needs — preferences, network settings, database connections), and testing in the real world (checking it in its actual environment, alongside other systems, to confirm it meets user needs). Finally, Maintenance is the ongoing phase of updates and fixes, ensuring the software keeps functioning correctly and adapts to changes in user needs or technology. That is why your apps keep updating — maintenance is not an afterthought, it is part of the life cycle.
Knowing the SDLC stages is one thing; deciding how to move through them is another. That is where methodologies come in. The book defines software development methodologies as structured approaches that guide the planning, creation and management of software projects. They exist to make sure the whole development process is systematic and efficient, and that it produces high-quality software — not by luck, but by design.
Underneath every methodology sits a software process model: an abstract representation of the processes involved in the SDLC. Think of the model as the skeleton and the methodology as the way a particular team walks with it. A process model gives a team a framework for planning, structuring and controlling how a system is developed, instead of letting each project invent its own chaos.
The book gives three reasons process models matter, and they are worth learning as a trio. Predictability: by following a defined process, teams can predict outcomes and manage risks more effectively — fewer nasty surprises near the deadline. Efficiency: structured methodologies streamline development, cutting wasted effort — nobody redoes work because nobody knew who was doing what. Quality: sticking to a process model means quality-assurance practices are woven through the whole SDLC, not bolted on at the end when fixing things is expensive.
With that foundation set, the book turns to the two big models you must be able to compare: the Waterfall Model and the Agile Methodology. They are almost opposites in spirit, and the next two sections take them one at a time — first the straight staircase, then the looping sprint.
Picture water falling down a staircase: it flows in one direction, step by step, and it never climbs back up. That is exactly how the Waterfall Model works. The book calls it a straightforward approach in which each phase of the project must be completed before the next one begins. It is linear and sequential — you move through each phase in order, without going back to earlier phases once they are complete.
The book's main phases run: Requirements (gather and document what the software needs to do), Design (plan how it will be built and how it will look), Implementation (write the actual code), Testing (check for and fix problems), Deployment (release it for users), and Maintenance (update it and fix issues that appear once it is in use). The book's Figure 1.2 even breaks the early phases into working detail — requirements work includes defining the project scope, stakeholder interviews, user research, requirements gathering and a kick-off meeting; design includes high-level design, design review, revisions and stakeholder approval; implementation runs in development phases with reviews.
Benefits. First, it is simple and easy to understand, because its phases are clear and distinct — a beginner can draw it on one page. Second, its sequential process means each phase finishes one at a time, which makes the project easier to manage and its progress easier to track. Third, it is suitable for small projects with clear, fixed requirements where changes are unlikely.
Limitations. First, inflexibility: once a phase is complete, going back to change it is difficult and costly — imagine discovering, during testing, that the requirements themselves were wrong. Second, it is not ideal for complex projects with evolving requirements or complicated designs. Third, risk and uncertainty: the model assumes all requirements are known from the start, which is risky if new needs or issues appear later in the process. In short: Waterfall is calm, tidy and predictable — but only when you already know exactly what you are building.
If Waterfall is a staircase, Agile is a running track: you go around in short laps, improving a little each time. The book describes Agile Methodology as a flexible and adaptive approach that focuses on delivering small, functional parts of the software quickly and adapting to changes as the project progresses. The main idea is to work in short cycles, called iterations or sprints, which help teams deliver parts of the software rapidly and gather feedback early — before a small misunderstanding has grown into a huge, expensive mistake.
Agile is not just an attitude; the book names three concrete practices. Continuous Integration means regularly merging code changes into a central repository, so problems are detected and fixed early instead of exploding on the last day. Test-Driven Development means writing the tests before writing the code, so the code is built to pass a clear, agreed check of what "works" means. Pair Programming means two developers working together at one workstation, with one writing code and the other reviewing it in real time — four eyes catching what two would miss.
Benefits. Agile allows high flexibility: requirements can change even after development has started, so new needs or feedback are easier to absorb. And it brings improved customer satisfaction: regular updates and frequent delivery of working software mean customers can see progress and give feedback more often, instead of waiting months for a single reveal.
Limitations. Agile is not magic. Scaling challenges: managing large projects with many teams is difficult and needs careful coordination and communication. Stakeholder involvement: Agile needs active participation from all stakeholders, which is hard if some are unavailable or not fully engaged. And it is less predictable: because the project evolves through feedback and changes, predicting the exact timeline and scope of the final product is harder. The honest exam answer is a trade-off: Waterfall gives you a plan you can hold in your hand; Agile gives you a product you can keep improving.
The book opens this section with an analogy students remember: planning a software project is like planning a trip. You need to know where you are going, how long it will take, and how much it will cost. Skip any one of those three and the trip — or the project — goes wrong in a predictable way. The book's Figure 1.4 shows the five phases of a project management plan: Initiation, Planning, Execution, Performance Monitoring, and Project Closure.
Comprehensive project planning means thinking about all the details of your project before you start: understanding what needs to be done, who will do it, and how it will be done. That sounds obvious, yet it is the step teams most often rush past — and then pay for later. The book even pauses for a Do You Know? box: big software companies are worth a lot of money — in 2023, Microsoft's worth was about $2 trillion — which shows how important software is in today's digital world. Software is not a school subject floating in the air; it is one of the largest industries on earth.
Setting project timelines means deciding how long each part of the project will take. That simple decision is what keeps a project on track and gets it done on time — without dates, "soon" stretches forever. Then comes estimating costs: predicting the total expenses required to complete the project successfully. Accurate estimation helps with budgeting, resource allocation and setting realistic expectations — three phrases that basically mean "no surprises for the people paying".
The book names five key factors in cost estimation. The development team: cost depends on how many developers there are, their expertise, and their hourly rates. The technology stack: the choice of technology, programming languages and tools can affect cost, since some technologies need more resources or specialised knowledge. Project duration: longer projects generally cost more, because resources stay engaged longer and the scope can shift. Risk management: identifying risks and their mitigation strategies can add to overall cost, and contingency funds are often included for unforeseen issues. And quality assurance: the costs of testing, bug fixing and making sure the software meets quality standards are also part of the estimation. Notice how the last two are not "extras" — planning for risk and quality is part of honest pricing.
Good planning also means planning for what could go wrong. Risk assessment and management are crucial in any software project: identifying potential risks that could affect the project's success, analysing how likely each one is and how hard it would hit, and developing strategies to manage them. The book gives four steps, in order. 1. Identify risks: list every potential risk — technical risks such as technology changes, operational risks such as resource shortages, or external risks such as market fluctuations. 2. Analyse risks: evaluate the likelihood of each risk occurring and its potential impact on the project. 3. Develop mitigation strategies: for each significant risk, make a plan to reduce its likelihood or minimise its impact — for example adding buffers to the schedule, securing backup resources, or doing additional testing. 4. Monitor and review: keep watching the project continuously for new risks, and review existing risks to adjust strategies as necessary. Risk work is never a one-time list; it is a habit.
Then comes Execution, the phase where the actual development work happens. The team writes code, creates designs and builds the software based on the project plan — and because many people are building at once, it requires teamwork, coordination and regular updates to stay on track. If planning is the trip's route, execution is the driving.
Finally, Quality Assurance (QA). Note the difference from testing alone: QA ensures the whole project meets set standards and works correctly. It involves methods such as testing, reviewing code, getting feedback from stakeholders, and regularly checking the project's progress. Testing asks "does this feature work?"; QA asks the bigger question, "is this whole project being built to standard, all the way through?" Keep that distinction ready — examiners love it.
Some ideas are easier to draw than to describe in paragraphs. Graphical representation of software systems means using visual diagrams to depict various aspects of a system's structure and behaviour. It simplifies complex systems, making it easier for developers and stakeholders to understand, communicate about and manage the system. The standard language for these drawings is UML — the Unified Modeling Language: a standardised way to visualise the design of a software system, helping developers understand how a system works and communicates. The book discusses four types of UML diagrams.
The first is the Use Case Diagram, which shows the system's functionality from the user's perspective, helping to identify the requirements and the interactions between users and the system. A use case is a description of a set of interactions between a user (called an actor) and a system to achieve a specific goal. Each use case represents a complete workflow from the user's point of view, detailing the steps involved in accomplishing a particular task — and use cases are identified from the functionalities the system must support to meet the user's needs.
Use case diagrams serve three purposes: capturing functional requirements (identifying and documenting what the system must do), understanding user interactions (showing how different users will interact with the system), and planning and testing (helping to plan development and design test cases for validating system functionalities).
Identifying use cases takes four steps: 1. Identify actors — the different types of users who will interact with the system (actors can be human users or other systems). 2. Define goals — for each actor, what they need to accomplish using the system. 3. Outline interactions — describe the interactions between actors and the system to achieve those goals; each interaction that results in a significant outcome is a potential use case. 4. Validate use cases — review the identified use cases with stakeholders to ensure they accurately capture the required functionalities and interactions.
The book's Figure 1.5 shows a library system: two actors, Librarian and Student, outside the system box, linked to two use-case ovals inside it — Borrow book and Return book. Then a Class Activity asks you to design an online shopping platform: customers browse products, add items to their cart and make purchases; administrators manage product listings, process orders and handle customer inquiries; delivery personnel update delivery status. Comparing your findings with the book's list, the actors are Customer, Administrator and Delivery Personnel, and the use cases are Browse Products, Add Items to Cart, Make Purchase, Manage Product Listings, Process Orders, Handle Customer Inquiries and Update Delivery Status. Try sketching that one yourself before reading on — drawing it is the learning.
A use case diagram shows what users do. A class diagram shows how things are organised inside the system — the book calls it "like a map that shows how things are organized in a system". Where the use case diagram looks outward at people, the class diagram looks inward at structure: what kinds of things exist, what data each one holds, and what each one can do.
The book explains it through an example you can picture at home: organising your room. The Room represents the overall space encompassing all other elements, analogous to the main structure in a class diagram. A Box serves as a container within the room, akin to a class in a diagram. Attributes are what each box contains — for instance a 'ToyBox' holding toys or a 'BookBox' containing books. Methods are what boxes can do, like 'open' or 'close', similar to methods in a class diagram that define what the box can do. And specific boxes — a 'ToyBox' for toys, a 'BookBox' for books, a 'ClothesBox' for clothes — represent distinct instances of the general 'Box' class.
The book's Figure 1.6 draws exactly that: Room at the top (with attributes name and size), Box below it (label and contents), and three specialised boxes underneath — ToyBox (toys: List), BookBox (books: List) and ClothesBox (clothes: List). The minus signs before the attribute names are UML shorthand for "private" — data kept inside the class. The lines between the boxes show the relationships: the specialised boxes inherit from the general Box, and the Box belongs within the Room. Read a class diagram top-down like a family tree: general at the top, specialised below, and the details (attributes, then methods) written inside each box.
Class diagrams freeze a system in one moment. The next two diagrams add time and flow. Sequence diagrams show how objects in a system interact with each other in a particular sequence. They help in understanding the flow of messages between objects over time — read them top to bottom, like reading a conversation in order. The book continues the room example: the interactions are open() (the user opens each box), put toys / books / clothes inside (the user puts the respective items into the boxes), and close() (the user closes each box). Its Figure 1.7 draws the User on the left sending those messages, in order, to the Toys Box, Books Box and Clothes Box — first all the opens, then the puts, then the closes. If the order changed, the meaning would change: you cannot put toys into a box you have not opened.
Activity diagrams illustrate the flow of activities or steps in a process, and they are useful for modelling the logic of complex operations. Where a sequence diagram asks "who talks to whom, and when?", an activity diagram asks "what happens next, and what if something is not ready?" The book's example is a restaurant management system, from Order Placement to Food Preparation and finally to Order Delivery. Its Figure 1.8 is a small flowchart: Start → Order Placement → Food Preparation → a decision diamond, Food Ready? — if Yes, go to Order Delivery; if No, go to Re-Prepare Food and loop back — then a connector dot joins the paths to End. The diamond is the key symbol: it is the only shape that asks a question with two exits.
Finally, using UML to represent software systems: UML is useful at various stages of development, and the book names three practical applications. In planning, use UML diagrams to map out the system's requirements and design before writing any code. In development, developers refer to UML diagrams to understand the structure and relationships within the system. In communication, UML diagrams help team members — including non-technical stakeholders — to understand how the system works. One shared picture, three jobs: plan it, build from it, explain with it.
Here is a comforting truth for beginners: most programming problems have been solved before. Design patterns are common solutions to problems in software development — they act like templates to help make coding easier, faster and more consistent. You do not copy them blindly; you recognise the shape of a problem you have seen before and reach for the pattern that fits it.
The book introduces four widely recognised patterns, each with a homely analogy. Singleton: a way to make sure that a specific object or resource is created only once in a program and reused whenever needed — think of one school printer shared by everyone, not a new printer for every student. Factory: like having a special workshop that knows how to create different products, but you do not need to worry about the details of how those products are made — you just tell the factory what you need, and it gives you the finished product. Observer: like a group of people interested in getting updates from one particular source — whenever something important happens, the source automatically notifies all the interested people, keeping things in sync without everyone constantly checking for updates. Strategy: like having a toolbox full of different tools, each designed for a specific job — when you face a problem, you pick the right tool from the box based on the task at hand.
The book then gives a Class Activity: identify a real-world scenario around you where you can apply one of these design patterns, and share your examples in the next class. A good answer might be: a school bell system as an Observer (one bell event notifies every classroom), or a document printer service as a Singleton (one shared printer queue). Patterns are widely used to solve common problems and create robust, maintainable code, and they help by reducing code complexity (a clear structure), enhancing code reusability (proven solutions), and improving communication among developers (a common vocabulary — say "Singleton" and every developer pictures the same idea). The result is systems that are flexible, maintainable and easy to understand. And a Do You Know? box adds that many popular frameworks and libraries are built using design patterns — for example, the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern is used in web development frameworks like Ruby on Rails and Angular.
Two words students constantly swap — debugging and testing — and the book keeps them apart carefully. Debugging and testing are both important steps to make sure software works correctly; they help find and fix errors so the software meets requirements and runs as expected. But their jobs differ: testing finds that something is wrong, debugging finds where it is wrong and fixes it.
Debugging is the process of finding and fixing bugs or errors in software. Bugs are errors or mistakes that cause software to behave unexpectedly. Identifying them involves observing the software's behaviour and finding the source of the problem; once identified, fixing them requires making changes to the code to correct the error. The book names three tools and best practices: debuggers — software tools that help programmers find bugs by letting them step through code, inspect variables and monitor program execution; print statements — adding print statements to the code to display the values of variables at different points in the program (the beginner's best friend, and still used by professionals); and code reviews — having other developers review your code to spot potential errors, because a fresh pair of eyes sees what the writer has gone blind to.
Testing is the process of evaluating the software to ensure it meets the requirements and works as expected. The testing process typically follows a hierarchy that begins with smaller components and gradually progresses to the entire system, including user acceptance. Unit testing is the first level: individual components or modules are tested in isolation, each "unit" being a small, testable part such as a function or method, with the goal of verifying that each component works correctly according to its design and performs as expected. The book's Class Activity here is a lovely homework task: try writing a unit test for a simple function in your favourite programming language. Integration testing comes after unit testing, evaluating the interaction between different components or modules — it checks for interface errors, data flow between modules and other integration-related issues, ensuring units work correctly when combined. System testing is a higher level where the entire software system is tested as a whole, treated as a complete entity, evaluating overall functionality, performance, security and compliance with specified requirements. Finally, acceptance testing determines whether the software is ready for release, often performed by end-users or clients to ensure it meets their expectations and requirements — and a Do You Know? box notes it is sometimes called User Acceptance Testing (UAT) because it is often done by the end-users themselves.
Programmers do not write code with bare hands. Software development tools are programs or applications that assist in various stages of software creation — used to write, edit, test, debug and manage code, ensuring that software functions correctly and efficiently. The book walks through six kinds, and learning one example of each is enough to answer most questions.
1.8.1 Language editors (also known as code editors) are tools that help developers write and edit code in different programming languages. Examples: Notepad++, a simple yet powerful code editor, and VS Code, a popular editor with many extensions. 1.8.2 Translators convert code written in one programming language into another language the computer can understand — they convert high-level programming languages (like Python) into machine language (binary code) that computers can execute. Two types: interpreters, which translate code line-by-line (for example the Python interpreter), and compilers, which translate the entire code at once (for example GCC for C/C++). The line-by-line versus all-at-once contrast is the whole point — learn it as a pair.
1.8.3 Debuggers are tools that help developers find and fix errors (bugs) in their code; their purpose is to let developers test their code and identify where errors occur. Examples: GDB (GNU Debugger for C/C++) and the Visual Studio Debugger, integrated with Visual Studio IDE. 1.8.4 Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) are comprehensive software suites that provide all the tools needed for software development in one place — an IDE integrates editors, compilers, debuggers and version-control systems to streamline the process, offering a unified interface where developers can write, test and debug their code efficiently. Examples: Visual Studio (popular for .NET and C++ development) and PyCharm (preferred for Python development).
1.8.5 Online and offline computing platforms provide environments where developers can write, run and test their code. Online platforms are cloud-based, accessible via the internet (for example Replit, Gitpod); offline platforms are local development environments on a computer (for example local installations of IDEs). Finally, 1.8.6 Source code repositories are platforms where developers can store, manage and track changes to their code. Repositories help with version control, allowing multiple developers to work on the same project without conflicts. Examples: GitHub (a popular platform for open-source projects) and Bitbucket (used for both private and public repositories). If an IDE is a workshop, a repository is the shared store-room with a full record of who changed what, and when.
The book's exercise (printed pages 18–19) has three parts: Q.1 Multiple Choice Questions (7), Short Questions (7) and Long Questions (5). There is no separate inquisitive or review section in this chapter's exercise, so none is invented here. The three Class Activities in the chapter (online-shopping use cases, a real-world design-pattern scenario, and writing a unit test) are classroom practice tasks, discussed in sections 10, 13 and 14 above — they are not exercise questions and are not counted below. MCQ keys were cross-checked against the book's Answers table (printed page 141): Unit 1 = 1(b), 2(b), 3(b), 4(b), 5(a), 6(c), 7(b).
1. Primary purpose of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is to:
Answer: (b) deliver high-quality software within time and cost estimates — this is the book's own definition of the SDLC's primary purpose (section 1.2): high quality, meeting customer expectations, within time and cost, working efficiently.
2. A type of requirement specifying system performance:
Answer: (b) Non-Functional Requirements — non-functional requirements define quality attributes and performance criteria: how the system performs, e.g. handling 1000 users, 99.9% availability. Functional requirements say what it does.
3. Role of a framework in the context of SDLC is to:
Answer: (b) provide a structured foundation with predefined components and architectures — a framework (e.g. Django) gives ready-made parts like login and database handling, so developers focus on their own application's code instead of reinventing common solutions.
4. Software development model involving short cycles or sprints:
Answer: (b) Agile Methodology — the book's key (Answers, Unit 1, Q4 = b) and its definition: Agile works in short cycles called iterations or sprints. ⚠️ Note: Scrum (d) is a well-known Agile framework that also uses sprints, but the book's intended answer here is the broader Agile Methodology, so (b) is keyed.
5. Crucial aspect of comprehensive project planning:
Answer: (a) Understanding the project scope and tasks — comprehensive planning means thinking about all details before starting: what needs to be done, who will do it, and how. Colour schemes, team size for its own sake, and ignoring risks are the opposite of planning.
6. Factor that does not influence cost estimation of a software project:
Answer: (c) Number of meetings held — the book's cost factors are the development team, technology stack, project duration, risk management and quality assurance. Meetings may happen during a project, but their count is not a book cost factor; scope, stack and operational costs genuinely move the price.
7. The purpose of Use Case Diagrams is to:
Answer: (b) identify and document the system's functional requirements — a use case diagram shows functionality from the user's perspective; its first stated purpose is capturing functional requirements (the other two are understanding user interactions, and planning/testing). Architecture is shown by other diagrams, e.g. class diagrams.
Functional requirements describe what the system should do — its specific behaviours, tasks, services and functionalities, and its interactions with users or other systems. Example (library system): users can register, search for books and borrow them; librarians can add, update and remove books. Non-functional requirements describe how the system should perform — its quality attributes, performance criteria and constraints. Example (same library): handle 1000 simultaneous users without slowing down, be available 99.9% of the time, keep user data encrypted with secure authentication. In one line: functional = the job; non-functional = the standard the job must meet.
Testing matters because a program that has never been checked is a promise nobody has verified. Reason 1 — it finds bugs before users do: testing identifies bugs, errors and issues while they are still cheap to fix, instead of letting them reach users, where they damage trust and cost far more. Reason 2 — it proves the software meets its specifications: functionality testing confirms every feature works as specified, performance testing confirms it holds up under heavy traffic or data, and compatibility testing confirms it works on different devices and operating systems. Without testing, "finished" means only "typed" — with testing, it means "checked and fit to release".
Picture three developers each working on one feature of a school app: one on attendance, one on results, one on fees. Without continuous integration, each works alone for weeks and only merges at the end — when the three parts collide and nobody knows whose change broke what. With continuous integration, every developer regularly merges their code changes into one central repository, and the combined code is built and checked each time. A clash shows up the same day it is created, while the developer still remembers what they changed. Its importance is threefold: problems are detected and fixed early, the project always has a working version to show, and the final merge stops being a dreaded event. In Agile's short sprints, that fast feedback loop is what makes "deliver a small working part quickly" actually possible.
The four steps work as a chain, and each one earns its place. 1. Identify risks (technical, e.g. a technology change; operational, e.g. a resource shortage; external, e.g. market fluctuation) — a risk nobody names cannot be managed. 2. Analyse risks — judge each risk's likelihood and impact, so the team spends effort on the risks that actually matter instead of panicking about all of them equally. 3. Develop mitigation strategies — for each significant risk, plan how to reduce its likelihood or minimise its impact, e.g. adding buffers to the schedule, securing backup resources, or doing additional testing. 4. Monitor and review — watch continuously for new risks and revisit old ones, because risks change as the project moves. Their importance is simple: without this cycle, a project discovers its problems at the worst possible moment — at the deadline, in front of the user. With it, surprises become planned-for events with a response ready.
A use case diagram exists to show a system through its users' eyes, before a single line of code is written. Its purposes are three: (1) capturing functional requirements — it identifies and documents what the system must do, as a set of goals users achieve (e.g. Borrow book, Return book); (2) understanding user interactions — it shows, at a glance, which actors (people or other systems) interact with the system and how; and (3) planning and testing — it helps plan development and design test cases, because every use case is something that must later be built and then checked. A team that agrees on the use case diagram first agrees on what "done" means — and that agreement prevents most later arguments.
What each shows: a sequence diagram shows interactions between objects over time — who sends which message to whom, and in what order. An activity diagram shows the flow of activities or steps in a process — what happens next, including decisions. Reading direction: a sequence diagram reads top to bottom along lifelines (User → Toys Box: open(), put inside, close()); an activity diagram reads as a flowchart (Start → Order Placement → Food Preparation → decision → Delivery/End). Key symbols: sequence diagrams use lifelines and message arrows; activity diagrams use activity boxes, a decision diamond (Food Ready? Yes/No) and connectors. Best for: sequence diagrams suit object-to-object conversations (the room-box example); activity diagrams suit process logic with branches and loops (the restaurant example, where "not ready" loops back to Re-Prepare Food). Common ground: both are UML behavioural diagrams — both describe what happens, not what things are (that is the class diagram's job).
The Factory Pattern is like a special workshop that knows how to create different products: you tell the factory what you need, and it gives you the finished product, without you worrying about the details of how it is made. Direct creation means your code itself says "make this exact thing, in this exact way" every time — so if the way of making it changes, every place that creates it must change too, and your code is tangled up with construction details it does not need. With a factory, your code only says "factory, give me a notification" (or a document, or a vehicle), and the factory decides which concrete type to build and how. Example: a school app sends alerts by SMS, email and app notification. Direct creation would scatter "new SMSAlert / new EmailAlert" through the code; with a factory, the code asks the factory for an alert of a given type, and adding a new channel (say WhatsApp) means changing the factory alone, not every corner of the app. That is the pattern's payoff: less coupling, easier change.
⚠️ Derived worked answer: the book asks for a design, so the steps below apply the chapter's design and flowchart ideas (section 1.2.2.2, activity-flow logic) to registration; the book does not print a ready-made flowchart for this question. Flowchart, top to bottom: Start (oval) → "Open registration form" (rectangle: user enters name, email, password) → "Are all required fields filled?" (diamond: No → show "Please complete all fields" and return to the form) → "Is the email already registered?" (diamond: Yes → show "Account already exists — please log in" and go to login) → "Is the password strong enough?" (diamond: No → show password rules and return to the form) → "Create account and save user record" (rectangle) → "Send verification email/message" (rectangle) → "Show success message" (rectangle) → End (oval). Key steps in words: collect input, validate completeness, check uniqueness, check password strength, store the account, verify the user, confirm success. Every diamond needs both exits labelled, and every error path must return the user to a place where they can fix the problem — a flowchart that traps the user is a design bug, not a design.
I would run it in short sprints, not as one long waterfall. First, gather requirements lightly and prioritise: talk to the future users, list what the app must do (e.g. login, view timetable, submit homework), and order the list so the most valuable features come first — Agile expects requirements to change, so the list stays living, not locked. Then work in sprints of one to two weeks: each sprint picks a small, functional slice (sprint 1: login screen that actually works; sprint 2: timetable view), builds it, and shows it to users for feedback. Use the three Agile practices from the book: continuous integration — merge code into the central repository daily so clashes surface early; test-driven development — write a test for each feature before its code, so "done" has a clear check; and pair programming for the trickiest parts, so a second pair of eyes catches errors in real time. After each sprint, review and adapt: show the working app, collect feedback, and re-plan the next sprint — if users ask for a new feature, it joins the list instead of breaking a fixed plan. Accept the trade-offs honestly: stakeholders must stay involved (otherwise feedback dries up), and the final delivery date is less predictable than a waterfall plan — the payoff is a working app in users' hands early, improving every sprint instead of appearing once, fully formed, months later.
⚠️ Derived worked answer: the book asks for a diagram; the description below constructs it from the chapter's use-case method (section 1.5.2.1) — actors, goals, interactions, validation — since the book does not print a banking diagram. System boundary: a rectangle labelled "Online Banking System". Actors (stick figures outside the box): Customer, Bank Staff (teller/officer), and optionally the Bank's Other System (e.g. ATM network) as a non-human actor. Use cases (ovals inside the box): for the Customer — Log In, Check Balance, Transfer Funds, Pay Bills, View Transaction History; for Bank Staff — Open Account, Approve Loan Request, Manage Customer Accounts, Handle Customer Inquiries; shared — Generate Statements (staff or customer request). Lines: each actor connects to only the ovals they perform — a customer does not approve loans, and staff do not transfer a customer's personal funds. Validation step: review the diagram with stakeholders (customers and bank staff) to confirm every oval is a complete goal from the user's perspective, not a technical step. Draw it with the customer on the left, staff on the right, ovals in the middle — and the diagram is complete.
⚠️ Derived worked answer: the book asks for a diagram; the message order below follows the chapter's sequence method (section 1.5.2.3) — objects across the top, messages in time order, top to bottom — since the book does not print a food-delivery diagram. Objects (left to right): Customer, App, Restaurant System, Delivery Rider. Messages in order: 1. Customer → App: select items and add to cart. 2. Customer → App: place order (confirm address and payment). 3. App → Restaurant System: send order details. 4. Restaurant System → App: confirm order and preparation time. 5. App → Customer: show "order confirmed". 6. Restaurant System → Delivery Rider: assign delivery (once food is ready). 7. Delivery Rider → Customer: deliver order. 8. Customer → App: confirm receipt (and optionally rate the order). Reading rule: time runs downwards — a message lower on the diagram always happens later; the rider cannot be assigned before the restaurant confirms, and delivery cannot precede preparation. Swap any two messages and the story breaks, which is exactly what a sequence diagram is meant to expose.
Why tools matter: without tools, every stage of the SDLC would be slower and more error-prone — code would be written in plain text with no help, translated by hand, and debugged by guessing. Tools are what turn a process on paper into work a team can actually do at speed. (a) Roles: Language editors help developers write and edit code in different languages, with features like highlighting that make structure visible. Translators convert high-level code (like Python) into machine language (binary) the computer can execute — interpreters line-by-line, compilers all at once. Debuggers help developers find and fix errors by stepping through code, inspecting variables and monitoring execution, so the exact place an error occurs can be identified instead of guessed. Together they cover the three verbs of building software: write it, make the machine understand it, and fix it when it goes wrong — and in maintenance, the same trio lets a later developer read, rebuild and repair old code safely. (b) Examples and payoff: Editors — Notepad++ (simple yet powerful) and VS Code (popular, many extensions): they speed writing and reduce typos and syntax slips. Translators — the Python interpreter (line-by-line, quick to test) and GCC for C/C++ (whole-program compilation, efficient final code): they make human-readable code actually run, accurately, every time. Debuggers — GDB for C/C++ and the Visual Studio Debugger: they replace guesswork with evidence, showing variable values at the moment of failure, which raises accuracy and cuts fixing time from hours to minutes. Add IDEs (Visual Studio, PyCharm), platforms (Replit, Gitpod, local IDEs) and repositories (GitHub, Bitbucket) and the full picture appears: each tool removes one class of human error, and together they are why modern teams can build software that is reliable, maintainable and scalable.
This chapter is the map of the whole subject: software development is the process of turning user needs into reliable, maintainable, scalable products, and the SDLC is the cycle that carries a product from its first idea through deployment and maintenance. Requirements come first — and the what versus how well split (functional vs non-functional) is the distinction to practise until it is automatic. Design, coding, testing, deployment and maintenance then follow in order, with testing checking functionality, performance and compatibility. Two ways of walking the cycle compete: Waterfall, linear and tidy but inflexible, and Agile, flexible and feedback-driven through sprints, continuous integration, test-driven development and pair programming. Planning adds the trip discipline — timelines, cost factors (team, stack, duration, risk, QA) and the four-step risk cycle — while UML gives the team a shared picture language (use case, class, sequence, activity) and design patterns give it shared solutions (Singleton, Factory, Observer, Strategy). Finally, debugging finds and fixes bugs, testing climbs from unit to acceptance, and the tools — editors, translators, debuggers, IDEs, platforms and repositories — make all of it doable.
Revision guidance: first, memorise the SDLC six stages in order and the four UML diagram types with one example each (library use case, room class diagram, room sequence, restaurant activity). Then practise the two comparisons examiners love most: Waterfall vs Agile (three benefits and three limitations each) and functional vs non-functional (sort ten sentences into what vs how well). Then drill the lists that reward rote learning: cost-estimation factors, risk steps, testing hierarchy, and one example per tool type. Finally, attempt every exercise question closed-book, and only then open the answers — especially the three long design questions, where drawing your own flowchart, use case and sequence diagrams by hand is the revision, not just reading someone else's.
