Polynomials play a fundamental role in algebra, and they turn up far beyond the classroom — in engineering, data science and digital communication. This unit explores polynomial division to find the quotient and the remainder, introduces the remainder theorem as a fast way to evaluate polynomials, and uses the factor theorem to factorize cubic polynomials. These ideas reach into polynomial regression, signal processing and coding theory — so the unit is worth learning properly, not just for the exam.

A polynomial in x is an expression of the form aₙxⁿ + aₙ₋₁xⁿ⁻¹ + aₙ₋₂xⁿ⁻² + … + a₂x² + a₁x + a₀, where n is a non-negative integer and the coefficients aₙ, aₙ₋₁, …, a₁, a₀ are real numbers. It can be thought of as a polynomial function of x. The highest power of x is called the degree of the polynomial: if aₙ ≠ 0, the polynomial is of degree n. So x² − 2x + 3 is of degree 2, and 3x³ + 2x² − 5x + 4 is of degree 3. The leading coefficient is the one that decides the degree — if it were zero, the degree would drop.

Long division of polynomials works exactly like long division of numbers: divide the leading term, multiply back, subtract, and bring down the next term. Example 1: divide the cubic 3x³ − 10x² + 13x − 6 by the linear polynomial x − 2. First 3x³ ÷ x = 3x²; multiply (x − 2)(3x²) = 3x³ − 6x² and subtract, leaving −4x² + 13x. Next −4x² ÷ x = −4x; multiply (x − 2)(−4x) = −4x² + 8x and subtract, leaving 5x − 6. Finally 5x ÷ x = 5; multiply (x − 2)(5) = 5x − 10 and subtract, leaving 4. Hence 3x³ − 10x² + 13x − 6 = (x − 2)(3x² − 4x + 5) + 4, so the quotient is 3x² − 4x + 5 and the remainder is 4. Example 2 divides by a quadratic: x⁴ − 3x³ + 5x² − 7x + 2 divided by x² − x + 1 gives quotient x² − 2x + 2 and remainder −3x — note the remainder here is not a constant, because the divisor is quadratic: division stops when the remainder's degree is lower than the divisor's degree, and −3x has degree 1, lower than 2.

x میں ایک کثیر رقمی اس شکل کا اظہار ہے: aₙxⁿ + aₙ₋₁xⁿ⁻¹ + … + a₂x² + a₁x + a₀، جہاں n ایک غیر منفی صحیح عدد ہے اور عددی سر aₙ، aₙ₋₁، …

(3x³ − 10x² + 13x − 6) ÷ (x − 2) Step 1: 3x³ ÷ x = 3x² → subtract → −4x² + 13x Step 2: −4x² ÷ x = −4x → subtract → 5x − 6 Step 3: 5x ÷ x = 5 → subtract → remainder 4 Quotient = 3x² − 4x + 5, Remainder = 4 ✓ check: (x − 2)(quotient) + 4 = dividend

9.1.1–9.1.2 — Remainder Theorem and Factor Theorem۹.۱. ۱.

ENGLISH

The remainder theorem (9.1.1) saves you the whole long division when the divisor is linear. Statement: if a polynomial f(x) of degree n ≥ 1 is divided by x − a till no x-term exists in the remainder, then f(a) is the remainder. Proof: dividing f(x) by (x − a) gives a unique quotient q(x) and a unique remainder R with f(x) = (x − a)q(x) + R. Put x = a: the (x − a) term dies, leaving f(a) = R. That is the whole proof — one substitution. The trap students fall into is the sign: dividing by x + 1 means x − a = x + 1, so a = −1, not 1.

Example 3: the remainder when f(x) = x⁴ + x³ + x² + 1 is divided by x + 1 is f(−1) = 1 − 1 + 1 + 1 = 2 — no division needed. Example 4 turns the theorem around to find an unknown: if x³ + kx² − 7x + 6 leaves remainder −4 on division by x + 2, then f(−2) = −8 + 4k + 14 + 6 = 4k + 12 = −4, so 4k = −16 and k = −4.

The factor theorem (9.1.2) is the remainder theorem with remainder zero. Statement: the polynomial x − a is a factor of f(x) if and only if f(a) = 0 — in other words, x − a is a factor of f(x) exactly when x = a is a root of the equation f(x) = 0. Proof: from f(x) = (x − a)q(x) + R, if f(a) = 0 then R = 0, so f(x) = (x − a)q(x) and x − a is a factor. Conversely, if x − a is a factor, then f(x) = (x − a)q(x) for some polynomial q(x), and putting x = a gives f(a) = 0. 📌 Note: to determine whether a given linear polynomial x − a is a factor of f(x), you only need to check whether f(a) = 0. Example 5: x − 2 is a factor of x³ − 7x + 6 without factorizing, because f(2) = 8 − 14 + 6 = 0. Example 6: if x + 1 and x − 2 are factors of x³ + px² + qx + 2, then f(−1) = 0 gives −1 + p − q + 2 = 0, i.e. p − q = −1, and f(2) = 0 gives 8 + 4p + 2q + 2 = 0, i.e. 2p + q = −5. Adding the two equations gives 3p = −6, so p = −2, and then q = p + 1 = −1.

۱.۱) جب تقسیم کنندہ خطی ہو تو پوری طویل تقسیم سے بچا لیتا ہے۔ بیان: اگر درجہ n ≥ ۱ والی کثیر رقمی f(x) کو x − a سے اس وقت تک تقسیم کیا جائے جب تک باقی میں کوئی x والا رکن نہ رہے، تو f(a) باقی ہے۔ ثبوت: f(x) کو (x − a) سے تقسیم کرنے سے ایک منفرد خارج قسمت q(x) اور ایک منفرد باقی R ملتا ہے، f(x) = (x − a)q(x) + R۔ x = a رکھیں: (x − a) والا رکن ختم ہو جاتا ہے، اور f(a) = R رہ جاتا ہے۔ یہی پورا ثبوت ہے — ایک ہی قیمت رکھنا۔ طلبہ جس جال میں پھنستے ہیں وہ علامت ہے: x + 1 سے تقسیم کرنے کا مطلب x − a = x + 1 ہے، اس لیے a = −1 ہے، ۱ نہیں۔

۱.۲) باقی صفر والا باقی قضیہ ہے۔ بیان: کثیر رقمی x − a، کثیر رقمی f(x) کا عامل ہے اگر اور صرف اگر f(a) = 0 ہو — دوسرے الفاظ میں، x − a، f(x) کا عامل ہے بالکل اس وقت جب x = a مساوات f(x) = 0 کا جذر ہو۔ ثبوت: f(x) = (x − a)q(x) + R سے، اگر f(a) = 0 ہو تو R = 0، اس لیے f(x) = (x − a)q(x) اور x − a عامل ہے۔ برعکس، اگر x − a عامل ہو تو f(x) = (x − a)q(x) کسی کثیر رقمی q(x) کے لیے، اور x = a رکھنے سے f(a) = 0۔ 📌 نوٹ: یہ طے کرنے کے لیے کہ آیا دیا ہوا خطی کثیر رقمی x − a، f(x) کا عامل ہے، صرف یہ جانچنا ہے کہ آیا f(a) = 0 ہے۔ مثال ۵: x − 2، x³ − 7x + 6 کا عامل ہے بغیر تجزیہ کیے، کیونکہ f(2) = 0۔ مثال ۶: اگر x + 1 اور x − 2، x³ + px² + qx + 2 کے عامل ہوں تو f(−1) = 0 سے p − q = −1 اور f(2) = 0 سے 2p + q = −5 ملتا ہے۔ دونوں مساواتیں جمع کرنے سے p = −2 اور پھر q = −1۔

f(x) = (x − a)·q(x) + R, aur x = a rakho to… Remainder Theorem R = f(a) bina divide kiye baqi nikal lo Factor Theorem f(a) = 0 ⇔ (x − a) factor hai baqi zero = factor mil gaya

Factor theorem اسی بات کا خاص case ہے: اگر f(a) = 0 ہو تو باقی zero ہے, یعنی (x − a) پورا factor ہے.

9.1.3 — Synthetic Division۹.۱.

ENGLISH

There is a neat shortcut for long division of a polynomial f(x) by a polynomial of the form x − a: it is called synthetic division. To divide px³ + qx² + cx + d by x − a, you work with a small table: the first line holds the coefficients, the second line holds the products, and the third line holds the sums — the third line gives the coefficients of the quotient, and its last entry is the remainder. The outline of the method is: (i) write down the coefficients of the dividend f(x) from left to right in decreasing order of powers of x, inserting 0 for any missing term; (ii) to the left of the first line, write a, the number from the divisor (x − a); (iii) use two patterns to fill the second and third lines — the vertical pattern (↓) means add terms, and the diagonal pattern (↗) means multiply by a. Bring down the first coefficient, multiply it by a and write it under the next coefficient, add down, and repeat — that is the whole method, and it is far quicker than writing out x-powers at every step.

Example 7 shows why it is powerful: if (x − 2) and (x + 2) are factors of x⁴ − 13x² + 36, find the other two factors by synthetic division. First write the polynomial with its missing terms filled in: x⁴ + 0x³ − 13x² + 0x + 36. Divide by 2: coefficients 1, 0, −13, 0, 36 give the third line 1, 2, −9, −18, 0 — remainder 0, as expected for a factor. The quotient coefficients 1, 2, −9, −18 belong to x³ + 2x² − 9x − 18. Divide that by −2 (for the factor x + 2): the third line is 1, 0, −9, 0 — remainder 0 again, and the new quotient is x² + 0x − 9 = x² − 9 = (x + 3)(x − 3). So the other two factors are (x + 3) and (x − 3), and the full factorization is (x − 2)(x + 2)(x − 3)(x + 3). Notice how the zero coefficients for the missing x³ and x terms were essential — skipping them would have shifted every column and ruined the table.

Synthetic division: (x³ − 7x + 6) ÷ (x − 2) coefficients (0 for missing x²): 1 0 −7 6 a = 2: bring ↓ 1 → ×2 = 2 → add: 2 → ×2 = 4 → add: −3 → ×2 = −6 → add: 0 third line: 1 2 −3 | 0 → quotient x² + 2x − 3, remainder 0 x² + 2x − 3 = (x + 3)(x − 1), so x³ − 7x + 6 = (x − 2)(x − 1)(x + 3)

9.2 — Real Life Applications of Remainder and Factor Theorems۹.

ENGLISH

The remainder and factor theorems are not just exam tools — they are used in polynomial regression (statistical modeling), signal processing (filtering and error detection) and coding theory (data encryption and error correction in communication systems). Regression analysis is a statistical method for modeling the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. Polynomial regression models that relationship as an nth-degree polynomial; it is used when the data shows a curved (non-linear) relationship but you still want a smooth, continuous function. The factor theorem is useful for reducing the degree of a polynomial regression model, and the remainder theorem helps in evaluating polynomials at given points — which is exactly what the examples do.

Example 8 (sales data): a polynomial regression model P(x) = x³ + x² + 2x + 1 is fitted to monthly sales figures. If the observed sales in the 3rd month are 40 units, find the percentage error. Predicted sales: P(3) = 27 + 9 + 6 + 1 = 43. Error = Observed − Predicted = 40 − 43 = −3. Percentage error = |−3|/40 × 100 = 7.5%. Example 9 (missing data): for the model P(x) = 3x³ − 4x² + 2x − 5, a data point at x = −1 is missing — its predicted value is P(−1) = −3 − 4 − 2 − 5 = −14, by the remainder theorem (evaluating the polynomial at the point).

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is the use of computers or digital devices to analyze, change or improve signals like sound, images or sensor data. Systems are described by transfer functions in the z-domain, H(z) = B(z)/A(z), a ratio of two polynomials: B(z) is the numerator polynomial (related to the system's zeros) and A(z) is the denominator polynomial (related to the system's poles). Finding the roots of B(z) gives the zeros: if B(z₀) = 0, then (z − z₀) is a factor of B(z), and if |z₀| = 1, that zero corresponds to a frequency the system blocks. Finding the roots of A(z) gives the poles: if A(p₀) = 0, then (z − p₀) is a factor of A(z), and the poles' locations in the complex z-plane decide the system's stability — for a stable system, all poles must lie inside the unit circle (|p₀| < 1). Example 10: a system with denominator A(z) = z² − 0.25 has poles where z² − 0.25 = 0, i.e. (z − 0.5)(z + 0.5) = 0, so z = 0.5 or z = −0.5. Since |0.5| = 0.5 < 1 and |−0.5| = 0.5 < 1, both poles are inside the unit circle, so the system is stable.

Stability: poles must lie INSIDE the unit circle |z| < 1: STABLE 0.5 −0.5 Example 10: A(z) = z² − 0.25 poles: z = 0.5, z = −0.5 |0.5| < 1, |−0.5| < 1 → both inside → system is STABLE ✓

KITAB KI EXERCISE

Below are all questions of Exercises 9.1 and 9.2 from Unit 9 of the official book (printed pages 173–174 and 176), each solved step by step. The book has no multiple-choice section, no review exercise and no inquisitive/numerical section in this unit, so none is invented here. Counting rule: one numbered question = one answer block; its parts (i), (ii), … are solved inside that block. That gives 10 + 7 = 17 blocks.

Exercise 9.1 ۱
EXERCISE 9.1 + ANSWERS
1. Find remainder and quotient by simplifying the following: (i) (3x² − x + 2) ÷ (x − 1)   (ii) (x³ + 12x² − 3x + 4) ÷ (x − 2)   (iii) (x⁴ − 5x³ − 8x² + 13x + 12) ÷ (x − 6)   (iv) (5x⁴ − 3x³ + 2x² − 1) ÷ (x² + 4)   (v) (3x⁴ − 5x³ + 4x − 6) ÷ (x² − 3x + 5)

(i) Synthetic division with a = 1 on coefficients 3, −1, 2: bring down 3; multiply 3 × 1 = 3, add to −1 to get 2; multiply 2 × 1 = 2, add to 2 to get 4. Quotient 3x + 2, remainder 4. (ii) Synthetic division with a = 2 on 1, 12, −3, 4: 1 → 2 → 14 → 28 → 25 → 50 → 54. Quotient x² + 14x + 25, remainder 54. (iii) Synthetic division with a = 6 on 1, −5, −8, 13, 12: 1 → 6 → 1 → 6 → −2 → −12 → 1 → 6 → 18. Quotient x³ + x² − 2x + 1, remainder 18. (iv) Long division (the divisor is quadratic, so synthetic division does not apply directly): 5x⁴ ÷ x² = 5x²; subtract 5x²(x² + 4) = 5x⁴ + 20x², leaving −3x³ − 18x² − 1. Next −3x³ ÷ x² = −3x; subtract −3x(x² + 4) = −3x³ − 12x, leaving −18x² + 12x − 1. Next −18x² ÷ x² = −18; subtract −18(x² + 4) = −18x² − 72, leaving 12x + 71. Quotient 5x² − 3x − 18, remainder 12x + 71. (The remainder has degree 1, lower than the divisor's degree 2, so division stops here.) (v) Long division: 3x⁴ ÷ x² = 3x²; subtract 3x²(x² − 3x + 5) = 3x⁴ − 9x³ + 15x², leaving 4x³ − 15x² + 4x − 6. Next 4x³ ÷ x² = 4x; subtract 4x(x² − 3x + 5) = 4x³ − 12x² + 20x, leaving −3x² − 16x − 6. Next −3x² ÷ x² = −3; subtract −3(x² − 3x + 5) = −3x² + 9x − 15, leaving −25x + 9. Quotient 3x² + 4x − 3, remainder −25x + 9.

2. Use the remainder theorem to find the remainder when the first polynomial is divided by the second polynomial. (i) x² + 5x + 6 , x − 2   (ii) x³ + 5x² + 6 , x + 1   (iii) x⁴ + x³ + x² + x + 1 , x − 1   (iv) x⁴ + x² + 1 , x + 3   (v) x⁴ + x³ + 2 , x + 2

(i) Divisor x − 2 gives a = 2: f(2) = 4 + 10 + 6 = 20. (ii) Divisor x + 1 gives a = −1: f(−1) = −1 + 5 + 6 = 10. (iii) Divisor x − 1 gives a = 1: f(1) = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5. (iv) Divisor x + 3 gives a = −3: f(−3) = 81 + 9 + 1 = 91. (v) Divisor x + 2 gives a = −2: f(−2) = 16 − 8 + 2 = 10.

3. Use the factor theorem to determine if the first polynomial is a factor of the second polynomial. (i) x + 1 , x² − 1   (ii) x − 2 , x² − 5x + 6   (iii) x + 1 , x³ + x² + x − 3   (iv) x − 2 , x³ + x² − 7x + 2   (v) x − 3 , x⁴ − 3x³ + x² − x + 1

(i) f(−1) = 1 − 1 = 0, so yes, x + 1 is a factor of x² − 1. (ii) f(2) = 4 − 10 + 6 = 0, so yes, x − 2 is a factor of x² − 5x + 6. (iii) f(−1) = −1 + 1 − 1 − 3 = −4 ≠ 0, so no, x + 1 is not a factor of x³ + x² + x − 3. (iv) f(2) = 8 + 4 − 14 + 2 = 0, so yes, x − 2 is a factor of x³ + x² − 7x + 2. (v) f(3) = 81 − 81 + 9 − 3 + 1 = 7 ≠ 0, so no, x − 3 is not a factor of x⁴ − 3x³ + x² − x + 1.

4. Use synthetic division to show that x is the zero of the polynomial and use the result to factorize the polynomial completely. (i) x³ − 7x + 6, x = 2   (ii) x³ − 28x − 48, x = −4   (iii) 2x⁴ + 7x³ − 4x² − 27x − 18, x = 2, x = −3

(i) f(2) = 8 − 14 + 6 = 0, so x = 2 is a zero. Synthetic division with a = 2 on coefficients 1, 0, −7, 6 (0 for the missing x² term): third line 1, 2, −3, 0. Quotient x² + 2x − 3 = (x + 3)(x − 1). Complete factorization: (x − 2)(x − 1)(x + 3). (ii) f(−4) = −64 + 112 − 48 = 0, so x = −4 is a zero. Synthetic division with a = −4 on 1, 0, −28, −48: third line 1, −4, −12, 0. Quotient x² − 4x − 12 = (x − 6)(x + 2). Complete factorization: (x + 4)(x − 6)(x + 2). (iii) f(2) = 32 + 56 − 16 − 54 − 18 = 0, so x = 2 is a zero. Synthetic division with a = 2 on 2, 7, −4, −27, −18: third line 2, 11, 18, 9, 0. Quotient 2x³ + 11x² + 18x + 9. Check x = −3 in it: 2(−27) + 11(9) + 18(−3) + 9 = −54 + 99 − 54 + 9 = 0, so x = −3 is a zero of the quotient too. Synthetic division with a = −3 on 2, 11, 18, 9: third line 2, 5, 3, 0. Quotient 2x² + 5x + 3 = (2x + 3)(x + 1). Complete factorization: (x − 2)(x + 3)(2x + 3)(x + 1).

5. Use synthetic division to find the quotient and the remainder when the polynomial x⁴ − 10x² − 2x + 4 is divided by x + 3.

Write the polynomial with its missing term: x⁴ + 0x³ − 10x² − 2x + 4. Synthetic division with a = −3 (since x + 3 = x − (−3)): coefficients 1, 0, −10, −2, 4 give the third line 1, −3, −1, 1, 1. Quotient x³ − 3x² − x + 1, remainder 1.

6. If x + 1 and x − 2 are factors of x³ − px² + qx + 2. Using synthetic division, find the values of p and q.

Divide x³ − px² + qx + 2 by (x + 1) synthetically (a = −1): coefficients 1, −p, q, 2 give the third line 1, −p − 1, q + p + 1, and remainder 1 − p − q. Since x + 1 is a factor, the remainder is 0: 1 − p − q = 0, i.e. p + q = 1. Now divide the quotient x² + (−p − 1)x + (q + p + 1) by (x − 2) synthetically (a = 2): the third line is 1, 1 − p, and remainder q − p + 3. Since x − 2 is a factor, this remainder is 0: q − p = −3. Solving p + q = 1 and q − p = −3: adding gives 2q = −2, so q = −1 and p = 2. Check: x³ − 2x² − x + 2 has f(−1) = −1 − 2 + 1 + 2 = 0 and f(2) = 8 − 8 − 2 + 2 = 0. ✓

7. When the polynomial 4x⁴ + 2x³ + kx² + 13 is divided by x + 1, the remainder is 16. Find the value of k.

By the remainder theorem, the remainder is f(−1) = 4(−1)⁴ + 2(−1)³ + k(−1)² + 13 = 4 − 2 + k + 13 = k + 15. Set equal to 16: k + 15 = 16, so k = 1.

8. When the polynomial x³ + x² + x + k is divided by x + 1, the remainder is 7. Find the value of k.

By the remainder theorem, the remainder is f(−1) = (−1)³ + (−1)² + (−1) + k = −1 + 1 − 1 + k = k − 1. Set equal to 7: k − 1 = 7, so k = 8.

9. Use factor theorem to find the values of p and q if x + 1 and x − 2 are the factors of the polynomial x³ + px² + qx + 3.

Since x + 1 is a factor, f(−1) = 0: −1 + p − q + 3 = 0, i.e. p − q = −2. Since x − 2 is a factor, f(2) = 0: 8 + 4p + 2q + 3 = 0, i.e. 4p + 2q = −11, or 2p + q = −11/2. From the first equation q = p + 2; substituting: 2p + (p + 2) = −11/2, so 3p = −15/2 and p = −5/2. Then q = p + 2 = −1/2. Check: f(−1) = −1 − 5/2 + 1/2 + 3 = 0 and f(2) = 8 − 10 − 1 + 3 = 0. ✓

10. Use factor theorem to find the values of a and b if −2 and 2 are the roots of the polynomial 2x³ + 4x² + ax + b.

Since −2 is a root, f(−2) = 0: 2(−8) + 4(4) + a(−2) + b = −16 + 16 − 2a + b = 0, i.e. b = 2a. Since 2 is a root, f(2) = 0: 2(8) + 4(4) + 2a + b = 16 + 16 + 2a + b = 0, i.e. 2a + b = −32. Substituting b = 2a: 4a = −32, so a = −8 and b = 2a = −16.

EXERCISE 9.2 + ANSWERS
1. Consider a data set at monthly sales figures. A polynomial regression model P(x) = x³ + 2x² + x − 3 is fitted to this data. If the observed sales in the 5th month are 240 units, find the percentage error.

Predicted sales in the 5th month: P(5) = 125 + 2(25) + 5 − 3 = 125 + 50 + 5 − 3 = 177 units. Error = Observed − Predicted = 240 − 177 = 63 units. Percentage error = (63/240) × 100 = 26.25%.

2. A retailer company has developed a polynomial regression model to predict weekly product demand: D(w) = w³ − 2w² + 5w − 4, where D(w) represents predicted demand (in units) and w is the week number. Use the remainder theorem to predict demand for 3rd week. If the observed demand is 22 units, calculate the prediction error.

By the remainder theorem, the predicted demand for the 3rd week is D(3) = 27 − 2(9) + 5(3) − 4 = 27 − 18 + 15 − 4 = 20 units. Observed demand is 22 units, so the prediction error = Observed − Predicted = 22 − 20 = 2 units (about 9.09% of the observed demand).

3. A digital signal processing system has a transfer function with a numerator B(z) = z² − z − 2. Use the factor theorem to find the zeros of the system.

The zeros are the roots of B(z) = 0. By the factor theorem: B(2) = 4 − 2 − 2 = 0, so (z − 2) is a factor; B(−1) = 1 + 1 − 2 = 0, so (z + 1) is a factor. Hence B(z) = (z − 2)(z + 1), and the zeros are z = 2 and z = −1.

4. A signal process system has a transfer function H(z) = (z² + 3z + 2)/(z² − 0.2z + 0.9). Find the zero(s) of the transfer function by using factor theorem.

The zeros of H(z) are the roots of its numerator B(z) = z² + 3z + 2. By the factor theorem: B(−1) = 1 − 3 + 2 = 0, so (z + 1) is a factor; B(−2) = 4 − 6 + 2 = 0, so (z + 2) is a factor. Hence B(z) = (z + 1)(z + 2), and the zeros are z = −1 and z = −2. (The denominator's roots are the poles, not the zeros, so they are not asked for here.)

5. A signal process system has a transfer function H(z) = (z² − 0.5z − 0.5)/(z³ + 1). Find the zero(s) of the transfer function by using factor theorem.

The zeros are the roots of the numerator B(z) = z² − 0.5z − 0.5. By the factor theorem: B(1) = 1 − 0.5 − 0.5 = 0, so (z − 1) is a factor; B(−0.5) = 0.25 + 0.25 − 0.5 = 0, so (z + 0.5) is a factor. Hence B(z) = (z − 1)(z + 0.5), and the zeros are z = 1 and z = −0.5.

6. A signal processing system has a transfer function with a denominator A(z) = z² − 0.3z − 0.4. Use factor theorem to find the poles of the system and determine if the system is stable.

The poles are the roots of A(z) = 0. Factor: z² − 0.3z − 0.4 = 0. Using the quadratic formula, z = [0.3 ± √(0.09 + 1.6)]/2 = [0.3 ± 1.3]/2, so z = 0.8 or z = −0.5. (Check by the factor theorem: A(0.8) = 0.64 − 0.24 − 0.4 = 0 and A(−0.5) = 0.25 + 0.15 − 0.4 = 0.) Both poles satisfy |0.8| = 0.8 < 1 and |−0.5| = 0.5 < 1 — both lie inside the unit circle — so the system is stable.

7. The denominator of signal processing system's transfer function equal to A(z) = z² + 1.2z + 0.35 Use factor theorem to determine the location of the corresponding poles and assess the stability of the system.

The poles are the roots of A(z) = 0. Factor: z² + 1.2z + 0.35 = 0. Using the quadratic formula, z = [−1.2 ± √(1.44 − 1.4)]/2 = [−1.2 ± 0.2]/2, so z = −0.5 or z = −0.7. (Check by the factor theorem: A(−0.5) = 0.25 − 0.6 + 0.35 = 0 and A(−0.7) = 0.49 − 0.84 + 0.35 = 0.) Both poles satisfy |−0.5| = 0.5 < 1 and |−0.7| = 0.7 < 1 — both lie inside the unit circle — so the system is stable.

This short unit is built on one identity: f(x) = (divisor) × (quotient) + (remainder), where the remainder's degree is always lower than the divisor's degree. Long division finds the quotient and remainder mechanically — divide the leading term, multiply back, subtract, repeat. When the divisor is linear, x − a, two shortcuts take over: the remainder theorem says the remainder is simply f(a), and the factor theorem says x − a is a factor exactly when f(a) = 0. Synthetic division is the fastest way to divide by x − a — a small table of coefficients, "bring down, multiply by a, add" — and repeating it peels off factor after factor until a polynomial is completely factorized. The unit closes with the theorems at work in the real world: polynomial regression models predicting sales and demand (with percentage and prediction errors), and signal-processing systems where the numerator's roots are the zeros and the denominator's roots are the poles — a system is stable exactly when every pole lies inside the unit circle.

Revision guidance: in synthetic division, never skip the zero coefficients for missing terms — one skipped zero shifts every column and ruins the table. In remainder and factor questions, the commonest slip is the sign: dividing by x + 3 means a = −3, and a root of −2 means the factor is x + 2. Always verify a division by multiplying back: (divisor × quotient) + remainder must equal the original polynomial. For stability questions, remember the rule is about the denominator's roots (poles), not the numerator's — and "inside the unit circle" means the absolute value is less than 1, so a pole at −0.7 is just as stable as one at 0.5.
