ENGLISH

Everything you can touch is built from atoms, and almost all of an atom's mass sits in a tiny ball at its centre — the nucleus. The book opens this chapter with a simple picture that is worth fixing in your mind: the nucleus holds only two kinds of particles. A proton carries a positive charge equal in size to the electron's charge (1.6 × 10−19 C) and has a mass of 1.67 × 10−27 kg. The hydrogen nucleus, a single proton on its own, even gets its own name: protium. The neutron, whose existence James Chadwick pointed out in 1932, carries no charge at all — its name is the clue — and its mass is nearly the same as the proton's. Together, protons and neutrons are called nucleons.

Two numbers describe any nucleus, and examiners love both. The atomic number Z counts the protons. The mass number A counts all the nucleons, protons plus neutrons, so A = N + Z where N is the neutron number. A nucleus is written as AZX — X is the chemical symbol, A sits on top, Z below. Carbon always has 6 protons, but its nuclei do not always carry the same number of neutrons: 126C, 136C and 146C are all carbon, and nuclei like these — same protons, different neutrons — are called isotopes. The first two are stable; carbon-14 is unstable and decays into nitrogen, giving out a β-particle and a neutrino as it goes.

Because a single proton's mass in kilograms is an awkwardly small number, physicists weigh nuclei in a friendlier unit, the unified mass unit (u). By definition, 1 u is exactly one-twelfth of the mass of a carbon-12 atom: 1 u = 1.6608 × 10−27 kg, which works out to 931 MeV of energy through E = mc². On this scale a proton is 1.007276 u, a neutron 1.008665 u and an electron only 0.00055 u. Keep that 931 MeV figure handy — you will need it for the Q-value numerical at the end of the chapter.

ENGLISH

Before the book explains what glues the nucleus together, it steps back and asks a bigger question: how many different forces are there, really? The answer is only four, and every push, pull and explosion in the universe is one of them at work. They are gravity, the electromagnetic force, the weak nuclear force and the strong nuclear force — and the table the book prints (Table 12.1) is worth learning by heart, because it gives you each force's strength compared with the strong force, and how far it reaches.

Gravity is the weakest of the four — about 10−38 times the strong force — but it never runs out of range, and it only ever attracts. That is why it rules planets and stars, whose masses are enormous, yet inside an atom it is so feeble you can ignore it. The electromagnetic force is much stronger (about 10−2), also reaches to infinity, and follows an inverse-square law like gravity. It runs everything from chemical bonds to light itself. In 1861 James Clerk Maxwell wrote four equations that showed electricity and magnetism were not two separate things at all, just two faces of this one force.

Then come the two nuclear forces, and this is where the nucleus stops being a mystery. Protons all carry positive charge, so they should blow each other apart — yet the nucleus holds together. It holds because the strong nuclear force between nucleons is stronger than their electrical repulsion, but only over a tiny distance, less than 10−15 m. It attracts every nucleon to every other: proton to proton, neutron to neutron, proton to neutron, all the same. The weak nuclear force (about 10−13, range under 10−18 m) is different in kind: it runs radioactive decay, especially beta decay, and it is the only force that can actually change one particle into another — a neutron into a proton, for instance. Without it, stars could not shine the way they do, because the fusion reactions inside them depend on such changes.

ENGLISH

In 1928 Paul Dirac predicted something that sounded like science fiction: every fundamental particle should have an anti-particle — same rest mass as its partner, but opposite charge and magnetic moment. Four years later, in 1932, Anderson found the first one in a cloud-chamber experiment: the positron, written e+, the anti-particle of the electron. It weighs exactly what an electron weighs, but it carries a positive charge of the same size as the electron's negative one. Anti-particles are usually written with a bar over the letter — an anti-proton is p with a bar, an anti-neutrino is ν with a bar — and the book is careful to add that quarks and leptons, the particles we now call elementary, have anti-particles too.

Where do you actually meet anti-particles? The book gives three honest answers. Cosmic rays — high-energy particles raining down from outer space, mostly protons, neutrons and heavier nuclei — smash into the gases of our atmosphere and shower us with secondary particles all the time. Unstable nuclei in reactors throw out neutrons, neutrinos, α-particles, photons, electrons and positrons when they fission. And when accelerators hurl charged particles at targets, the debris of head-on collisions contains pions, kaons, muons and even anti-protons. That is what the big machines are for: a particle accelerator, the book says plainly, is a huge machine that pushes charged particles to speeds approaching light, and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN has shown that some of a colliding particle's mass turns into electromagnetic radiation while the leftover mass appears as brand-new sub-atomic particles.

📌 For your information (book's side box): a particle accelerator is a huge machine that accelerates charged particles, such as electrons, protons or ions, to extremely high energies and speeds approaching the speed of light. Linear accelerators, cyclotrons and betatrons are important types of particle accelerators.

📌 Interesting information (book's side box): for their work on this discovery, Dirac and Anderson received the Nobel Prize in Physics — Dirac in 1933 and Anderson in 1936. In 1955, Segrè and Chamberlain discovered the anti-proton using a particle accelerator and were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1959 for their discovery of the anti-proton.

📌 Do you know? (book's side box): (i) Cosmic rays are high-energy particles coming from outer space with unknown sources, like the Sun or other stars; they consist mostly of protons, neutrons and heavier nuclei, and when they interact with the atoms of the Earth's atmosphere they produce showers of secondary particles which rain down on us all the time. (ii) When nuclei of unstable radioactive elements, say 235U, undergo fission reactions in nuclear reactors, they emit a variety of particles such as neutrons, neutrinos, α-particles, photons, electrons and positrons. (iii) When charged particles such as electrons and protons are accelerated by an accelerator and then bombarded on the target material, which is hydrogen, these accelerated charged particles may also collide head-on with each other; as a result, the debris from these reactions contains particles like pions, kaons, muons and even anti-protons.

Pair Production and Annihilation of Matterجوڑے کی پیدائش اور مادے کی فنا
🏷 Tags: pair production, annihilation, gamma ray, 1.02 MeV, rest mass energy, conservation laws
ENGLISH

Here is one of the strangest, and most beautiful, facts in the chapter: pure energy can turn into matter, and matter can turn back into pure energy. Pair production happens when a γ-ray — a very high-energy photon — passes close to an atomic nucleus. Out of that photon comes an electron–positron pair. The nucleus itself has to be there, and the book explains why: a third particle must be present to conserve linear momentum. A photon on its own in empty space cannot do this trick.

There is also a strict minimum price. By mass–energy equivalence, the photon must carry at least the rest-mass energy of the two particles it creates: 2mec² = 1.02 MeV, a value confirmed by experiment. A photon with less than 1.02 MeV simply cannot make the pair; a photon with more gives the extra energy to the two particles as kinetic energy. Charge, momentum and energy are all conserved in the process, and the same idea works for any particle and its anti-particle.

Annihilation is the film run backwards. When an electron meets a positron, they destroy each other and become two γ-ray photons: e− + e+ → γ + γ. Each photon carries 0.51 MeV, exactly the rest-mass energy of one electron (E = mec²). Two photons, not one, fly off in opposite directions — that detail matters, and it comes back as an exercise question, because a single photon could never balance both energy and momentum at once. The same annihilation can happen for other pairs too: proton and anti-proton, lepton and anti-lepton, quark and anti-quark.

📌 Do you know? (book's side box): pair production cannot take place in vacuum or space. Pair production can happen only in the presence of an external object like an atomic nucleus which can experience some recoil during the collision process, to conserve the energy and the momentum at the same time.

ENGLISH

Some nuclei simply cannot sit still. The book's rule of thumb is that nuclei with atomic numbers greater than 82 are naturally unstable: left alone, they spontaneously throw out radiation. Such nuclei are called radioactive, and the emission itself is natural radioactivity. Unstable isotopes can also be made on purpose in a laboratory by bombarding a stable element with high-energy neutrons, protons, α-particles or γ-rays; that is artificial radioactivity, and the isotopes it produces are called radioisotopes or radionuclides.

The radiation comes in three kinds, and the book's electric-field experiment tells them apart in one glance. Send the beam between charged plates: α-particles bend towards the negative terminal, so they carry positive charge; they are fast — a few percent of the speed of light — but heavy, so they travel only a few centimetres in air. β-particles bend towards the positive terminal, so they are negative, and they bend more than the α-particles, which proves they are lighter; they are fast-moving electrons reaching up to 0.9995 of the speed of light. γ-radiations sail straight through the field untouched — no charge at all. They are electromagnetic waves made of photons, they travel at the speed of light, they penetrate the most and they ionize the least. The book's summary table (Table 12.2) puts numbers on all this: ionization in air roughly 104 ion pairs per mm for α, 102 for β and about 1 for γ; range several centimetres for α and several metres for β; stopped by a sheet of paper (α), 1–5 mm of aluminium (β) and 1–10 cm of lead (γ). One small honesty note: the book's table skips a row number, jumping from row 4 to row 6 — a printing slip, not missing physics.

Alpha decay. When a nucleus has too many protons for its neutrons, electrical repulsion starts winning against the strong force, and the nucleus becomes unstable. Its way out is to throw out an α-particle — a helium nucleus, two protons and two neutrons together. The parent therefore loses two protons and two neutrons: its atomic number Z drops by 2 and its mass number A drops by 4, written generally as AZX → A−4Z−2X′ + 42He. The book's example is radium-226: 22688Ra → 22286Rn + 42He. Notice that the daughter is a different element — radium has become radon. That change of one element into another is called transmutation. In every α-decay, the number of nucleons and the total charge are conserved, exactly as the equation shows. There is one more quantity to notice: the parent nucleus is experimentally heavier than its daughter plus the α-particle put together, so the decay products carry less mass-energy than the parent did. That difference is the disintegration energy Q, the energy released by the decay.

Beta-minus decay. Some nuclides have a neutron-to-proton ratio (N/P) that is too large, and they fix it from the inside: a neutron in the nucleus turns into a proton, an electron and an anti-neutrino, written 10n → 11p + 0−1e + ν̄. The electron that flies out is the β-particle — and here is the point students usually get wrong: it is not one of the atom's orbital electrons. It is created inside the nucleus at the very moment of emission. No nucleons are lost, so A stays the same while Z rises by one: the parent of atomic number Z becomes a different element of atomic number Z+1. The book's example is thorium decaying to protactinium: 23490Th → 23491Pa + 0−1e + ν̄. Neutrinos and anti-neutrinos have zero charge and very small mass, which is why they slip through matter almost unnoticed and are so hard to observe.

Beta-plus decay. Other nuclides have the opposite problem, an N/P ratio too small for stability, and they decay by emitting a positron instead of an electron. A proton in the nucleus turns into a neutron and a positron, plus a neutrino: AZX → AZ−1X′ + 0+1e + ν. The positron has the electron's mass but a positive charge. The book's example is neon turning into fluorine: 1910Ne → 199F + 0+1e + ν. Again A does not change; Z falls by one.

Gamma radiation. After an α- or β-decay, the daughter nucleus is often left in an excited state, like an atom with its energy still raised. It settles down by throwing off the extra energy as a γ-ray photon, with no change to A or Z at all: AZX* → AZX + γ, where the star marks the excited nucleus and the unstarred symbol is the same nucleus in its ground state.

📌 For your information (book's side box): the neutrino was first proposed by Wolfgang Pauli in 1930 to obey the energy conservation in the beta-minus and beta-plus decays. Later, in 1953, the neutrino was detected by F. Reines and C. L. Cowan in a high-power nuclear reactor. On this discovery, F. Reines received the Nobel Prize in 1995.

Here is a difference that examiners return to again and again, and it is really a detective story. For one particular radionuclide, every α-particle comes out with the same sharply defined kinetic energy. Plot the number of α-particles against kinetic energy and you get distinct spikes — the book's Fig. 12.5. That is a discrete spectrum, and it tells you that α-decay is a two-body break-up: the energy is split in a fixed way between the α-particle and the recoiling daughter, so the α-particle always gets the same share.

β-particles behave completely differently. Their energies range all the way from zero up to a maximum value, and the plot is a smooth curve — the book's Fig. 12.6, a continuous spectrum. For years this looked like energy conservation was failing, until Pauli's neutrino solved it: the decay energy is shared between the β-particle and the (anti-)neutrino in varying proportions. Sometimes the electron takes nearly everything, sometimes the neutrino does, but the sum of the two energies is the same every time. So the total energy is conserved after all — it is just divided differently in each decay. Momentum and energy conservation apply to both α- and β-emission; the difference is only in how many particles share the energy.

ENGLISH

A fundamental particle means a particle with no internal structure — nothing smaller inside it, nothing to take apart. Right now the fundamental building blocks of matter are taken to be quarks and leptons. That was not always obvious. Smash a nucleus in an ultra-high-energy accelerator, or collide two high-energy particles, and entirely new kinds of particles appear that do not exist inside ordinary atoms. More than a hundred were found and sorted into families by their properties; some fitted a theoretical scheme, and the rest were nicknamed "strange particles". They are always created in pairs — when a pion (π) hits a proton, for example, a kaon (K°) and a lambda (Λ°) appear together: π + p → K° + Λ°.

All particles spin on their axes, and the spin of a charged particle makes it a tiny magnet. Electrons, protons and neutrons have spin ½, the photon has spin 1 and pions are taken to have spin zero. That half-or-whole difference splits the particle world in two. Fermions have half-integer spin (½, 3⁄2, …) and obey Pauli's exclusion principle: only one particle of a kind can occupy a given quantum state. Bosons have zero or whole-number spin and do not obey that principle; they follow Bose–Einstein statistics instead. The older classification still used in the book runs alongside this: the nucleons and heavier particles that decay into nucleons, such as Λ° and K°, are called baryons (heavy), while particles that do not interact strongly with nucleons, along with electrons, tau and neutrinos, are called leptons (small).

Then the book sorts everything again, this time by whether a particle feels the strong force. Particles that experience the strong force are hadrons; those that do not are leptons. Hadrons are composite — they have quark structure inside — and they divide into mesons, which are bosons such as the pion, and baryons, which are fermions, protons and neutrons being the key examples. Baryons are made of an odd number of quarks, usually three; mesons are made of an even number, usually two — one quark and one anti-quark. Leptons, by contrast, interact only through the weak or electromagnetic interactions, and no experiment has yet revealed any internal structure in them: they appear to be truly fundamental. All known leptons have spin ½, so they are all fermions. There are six known leptons in three pairs (Table 12.3): the electron with its electron neutrino, the muon with its muon neutrino, and the tau with its tau neutrino, each pair with its anti-particles. Charged leptons can join other particles to form composite things like atoms and positronium, while neutrinos hardly interact with anything and are therefore rarely observed. The best-known lepton of all is the electron.

12.6 Quarks — Flavours, Charge and Colour۱۲.۶ کوارکس — اقسام، چارج اور رنگ

ENGLISH

The discovery that protons and neutrons are not fundamental at all led, in 1964, to Gell-Mann and Zweig's proposal: hadrons are built from combinations of three even more fundamental entities called quarks, or quark flavours. The three first proposed were up (u), down (d) and strange (s). Today we know six quarks, just as there are six leptons, on what the book calls a presumed symmetry in nature. The other three are charm (c), bottom (b) and top (t). Every quark has spin ½ and an electric charge that is a fraction of the electron's charge — something nobody had imagined before: up, charm and top carry +2⁄3, while down, strange and bottom carry −1⁄3 (Table 12.4). And quarks are invisible in a deeper sense than "small": they never appear on their own.

Now watch how beautifully the charges add up. A proton is uud, so its charge quantum number is q(uud) = 2⁄3 + 2⁄3 + (−1⁄3) = +1 — exactly the proton's charge. A neutron is udd, so q(udd) = 2⁄3 + (−1⁄3) + (−1⁄3) = 0 — exactly neutral. Mesons are quark–anti-quark pairs, and the same arithmetic works there: a π+ meson is an up quark plus an anti-down quark, and the anti-down carries +1⁄3, so q = 2⁄3 + 1⁄3 = +1. If you can add thirds, you can work out any hadron's charge in this chapter.

Then comes a second property with a deliberately silly name. Not long after quark theory, it was suggested that quarks carry another kind of charge called colour, or "colour charge", analogous to electric charge. Each flavour of quark can come in one of three colours — red, green and blue — and the names have nothing to do with what your eyes see; they are whimsical labels, like "charm" itself. Anti-quarks carry anti-colours: anti-red, anti-green and anti-blue. Baryons are made of three quarks, one of each colour, and mesons are a quark–anti-quark pair of a colour and its anti-colour. In both cases the colours cancel out, so baryons and mesons are colourless, or white — blue + red + green = white, just as in the book's Fig. 12.7.

Beta Decay in Terms of Quarks and Quantum Chromodynamicsکوارکس کے لحاظ سے بیٹا ڈیکے اور کوانٹم کروموڈائنامکس

ENGLISH

Once you know the quark make-up of nucleons, beta decay stops looking like magic and starts looking like bookkeeping. A neutron is udd and a proton is uud. So when a neutron decays into a proton, what really happens at the deepest level is that one of its down quarks changes into an up quark: d → u + 0−1e + ν̄. The down quark's charge (−1⁄3) becomes the up quark's charge (+2⁄3), a jump of exactly +1 — and that +1 is carried away by the electron's −1 plus the rest of the bookkeeping, with the anti-neutrino balancing the lepton number. The book's point is larger than one equation: the quark model does not just list what particles are made of, it explains how they interact.

The force between quarks has its own name and theory. Each quark carries a colour charge, analogous to electric charge, and the strong force between quarks is called the colour force. The theory of that force is quantum chromodynamics (QCD) — "chromo" because it acts between colour charges, not electric ones. The strong force between whole hadrons, the one that holds nuclei together, is then understood as a leftover effect of the force between the quarks inside them. And the carriers of the colour force, the particles exchanged between quarks, are the gluons — the name is a hint, because they quite literally glue quarks together.

📌 Do you know? (book's side box): a neutron is stable only inside a nucleus. Free neutrons decay with a half-life of 900 s. Small honesty note on this box: the book prints 900 s; modern measurements put the neutron's mean lifetime near 880 s, which corresponds to a half-life of about 610 s (roughly 10 minutes) — so the book's 900 s is close to the mean lifetime rather than the half-life, but the point stands: a free neutron does not last long.

ENGLISH

Fundamental particles, the book says, are the six quarks, the six leptons and the gauge bosons — the book's text here also names the Higgs boson among them, though strictly the Higgs is a scalar boson rather than a gauge boson, a distinction your level does not need to worry about. Leptons and quarks interact by sending and receiving bosons, and those exchanged bosons are what "carry" the forces. Two positively charged particles, for instance, push each other apart by exchanging photons; quarks inside a nucleus attract each other by exchanging gluons; the W+, W− and Z bosons carry the weak nuclear force; and gravitons are the proposed carriers of gravity.

The Higgs boson is special, and it has its own section because it answers a question the rest of the chapter leaves hanging: why do particles have mass at all? Discovered in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, it is associated with the Higgs field, which the book pictures as permeating all of space. Particles get their mass by interacting with this field: particles that interact strongly with it, like the W and Z bosons, end up heavy, while particles like photons, which do not interact with it, keep zero rest mass. The Higgs boson itself has a mass of around 125 GeV/c² and decays rapidly into other particles. The book adds two key facts: the Higgs boson gets its own mass from its interactions with its associated Higgs field, and it can be a unique portal to the conditions of the universe shortly after the Big Bang and to signs of dark matter, because of its distinctive characteristics and properties.

Whatever the process — a reaction or a decay — section 12.8 says the same laws always hold, and they are your checking tool for every equation in the exercise: (1) conservation of energy, momentum and charge, including the nucleon number A and the charge number Z; (2) conservation of baryon number; (3) conservation of lepton number. If a proposed decay breaks any of these, it cannot happen. That is exactly how Pauli knew a neutrino had to exist: without it, beta decay would not balance.

12.9 — Why is there anything at all? Observations show an asymmetry between matter and anti-matter that the book calls the most remarkable feature of our universe. A number of hypotheses exist which show that the universe consists almost entirely of matter rather than anti-matter. The book's figures need reading carefully: about 5% of the universe is ordinary matter — electrons, protons and neutrons — and within that ordinary matter, roughly 71% is hydrogen atoms and 24% helium atoms; there is no contribution of anti-hydrogen or anti-helium atoms in the composition of the universe. Experiments explain the asymmetry as a violation of the conservation of baryon number — an imbalance in the number of baryons and anti-baryons. If particle–anti-particle symmetry is also violated, then there is a mechanism for making more quarks than anti-quarks, more leptons than anti-leptons, and eventually more matter than anti-matter. Even so, the book is blunt: the problem of the asymmetry of matter and anti-matter is still a mystery.

12.10 — Most of the matter in the observable universe is plasma. Our universe is more vast than our thinking, the book says, because we still know about only its 5% part and we still do not know about its remaining 95% part: about 27% is unknown matter called dark matter and about 68% is a mysterious anti-gravity material known as dark energy; 27 + 68 = 95, so 95% of the universe is out of our thinking. On the other hand, the 5% we do know about is ordinary matter, where hydrogen and helium are almost in the plasma state. Therefore, the book concludes, most of the matter in the observable universe is in the form of plasma.

12.11 — Two theories about where mass and force come from. To explain how particles interact through different mediators, the book gives two theories. In quantum field theory, each particle is represented by a field called a quantum field, which transmits a force from one particle to another: a positively charged particle makes an electric field in the space around it, and through that field it pulls a nearby negatively charged particle. The field can also carry energy and momentum, and where that energy and momentum are quantized, the quanta that exchange them are called field particles — all of them bosons. The electromagnetic force is mediated by photons (quanta of the electromagnetic field), the strong nuclear force by gluons, the electro-weak force by W and Z bosons, and gravity by gravitons. In string theory, an advanced concept in theoretical physics, the fundamental particles of the universe are not point-like at all but tiny vibrating strings, open or closed loops, whose vibrations determine the properties of particles, including mass and force. The string-theory framework, offering a potential theory of everything, still remains unproved experimentally.

12.12 — The Standard Model. The Standard Model is the collection of theories that describe the smallest experimentally observed particles of matter and the interactions between energy and matter. Three categories of particles form it (Fig. 12.8 in the book): matter, which makes up only 5% of the universe, is composed of quarks and leptons, and the fundamental bosons provide three forces — electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force. The Higgs boson explains how the other particles get mass. But the model is still considered incomplete: it cannot currently explain gravity, dark matter (27% of the universe) or dark energy (68% of the universe). That incompleteness is not a failure to hide — it is the next chapter of physics, waiting to be written.

Multiple Choice Questions — Tick (✓) the correct answer

12.1. Which one of the following is the fundamental particle?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Electron — a proton is uud and a neutron is udd, so both are built from quarks, and a meson is a quark–anti-quark pair; the electron is a lepton with no internal structure, so it alone is fundamental. پروٹان اور نیوٹران کوارکس سے بنے ہیں اور میسان بھی مرکب ہے؛ الیکٹران لیپٹان ہے جس کی کوئی اندرونی ساخت نہیں، اس لیے وہی بنیادی ذرہ ہے۔

12.2. The first discovered anti-particle is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) anti-electron — the positron, the electron's anti-particle, was found by Anderson in 1932 in a cloud-chamber experiment, the first anti-particle ever discovered; the anti-proton came much later, in 1955. پوزیٹران (اینٹی الیکٹران) 1932ء میں اینڈرسن نے دریافت کیا تھا، یہ پہلا دریافت شدہ ضد ذرہ تھا؛ اینٹی پروٹان 1955ء میں ملا۔

12.3. Which one of the following pair of particles creates annihilation?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) electron-positron — annihilation needs a particle meeting its own anti-particle; only the electron–positron pair in the list is such a pair, giving e− + e+ → γ + γ. ایناہیلیشن کے لیے ذرے کا اپنے ہی ضد ذرے سے ملنا ضروری ہے؛ فہرست میں صرف الیکٹران اور پوزیٹران ایسا جوڑا ہیں۔

12.4. The strong nuclear force between the two particles is mediated by:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) gluons — gluons are the exchange particles of the colour force between quarks; photons carry electromagnetism and gravitons (proposed) carry gravity. گلوآن کوارکس کے درمیان کلر فورس لے جاتے ہیں؛ فوٹان برقی مقناطیسی قوت اور گریویٹان ثقل کا حامل ہے۔

12.5. Which one of the following forces interacts between two particles through photons?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Electromagnetic force — in quantum field theory the electromagnetic force is mediated by photons, the quanta of the electromagnetic field. برقی مقناطیسی قوت فوٹان کے ذریعے منتقل ہوتی ہے جو برقی مقناطیسی فیلڈ کا کوانٹا ہے۔

12.6. When a neutron changes into a proton, then we will observe:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) β−-decay — a neutron turning into a proton throws out an electron (and an anti-neutrino), which is exactly β−-decay; β+ is the reverse, proton to neutron. نیوٹران کے پروٹان میں بدلنے پر الیکٹران خارج ہوتا ہے، یہی بیٹا مائنس ڈیکے ہے؛ بیٹا پلس اس کا الٹ ہے۔

12.7. Baryon is formed by combination of:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 3 quarks — baryons are made of an odd number of quarks, usually three (proton uud, neutron udd); a quark plus an anti-quark makes a meson. بیریان عام طور پر تین کوارکس سے بنتا ہے (پروٹان uud، نیوٹران udd)؛ کوارک اور ضد کوارک سے میسان بنتا ہے۔

12.8. Which one of the following forces has negligible effect between the elementary particles?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Gravitational force — at sub-atomic level gravity is about 10−38 times the strong force, so the book says its impact is generally disregarded there. ذیلی ایٹمی سطح پر ثقل مضبوط قوت سے تقریباً 10−38 گنا کمزور ہے، اس لیے اس کا اثر نظر انداز کیا جاتا ہے۔

12.9. Which particles are produced by strong interaction?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Hadrons — hadrons are precisely the particles that experience the strong force, and strong interactions produce them. ⚠️ Honesty flag: option (d) is a trap worth knowing about — mesons are hadrons, so (d) is also true in a narrow sense, but (c) is the broader, intended answer: the whole family produced by strong interaction is the hadrons. ہیڈران ہی وہ ذرات ہیں جو مضبوط قوت محسوس کرتے ہیں۔ نوٹ: میسان بھی ہیڈران کی ایک قسم ہے، اس لیے (c) وسیع اور مطلوبہ جواب ہے۔

12.10. A strong nuclear force exists between the nucleons of:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) all of these — the book states the strong nuclear force acts as an attractive force between all nucleons, so proton–proton, neutron–neutron and proton–neutron pairs all feel it. مضبوط نیوکلیائی قوت تمام نیوکلیانوں کے درمیان کشش کے طور پر کام کرتی ہے، اس لیے تینوں جوڑے درست ہیں۔

12.11. Which one of the following radiation/particles has the highest ionization power?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) α — the book's Table 12.2 gives α about 104 ion pairs per mm in air, against about 102 for β and about 1 for γ; heavy and slow wins at ionization. کتاب کی جدول کے مطابق الفا ہوا میں تقریباً 104 آئن جوڑے فی ملی میٹر بناتا ہے، بیٹا تقریباً 102 اور گاما تقریباً 1؛ اس لیے الفا کی آئنائزیشن سب سے زیادہ ہے۔

12.12. Which one of the following radiation/particles has the highest penetrating power?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) γ — γ-rays are chargeless photons travelling at light speed; α stops in paper and β in millimetres of aluminium, while γ needs 1–10 cm of lead. گاما شعاعیں بے چارج فوٹان ہیں اور روشنی کی رفتار سے چلتی ہیں؛ الفا کاغذ میں اور بیٹا ایلومینیم کی ملی میٹر موٹی چادر میں رک جاتا ہے جبکہ گاما کو سیسے کی سینٹی میٹر موٹی تہہ چاہیے۔

12.13. A change occurs in atomic number of a nucleus but its mass number remains the same by decay of:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) β — in β-decay a neutron becomes a proton (or vice versa), so Z changes by one while no nucleon is lost and A stays the same; α changes both, γ changes neither. بیٹا ڈیکے میں نیوٹران پروٹان میں (یا اس کا الٹ) بدلتا ہے، اس لیے Z ایک بدلتا ہے اور A وہی رہتا ہے؛ الفا دونوں بدلتا ہے اور گاما کوئی نہیں۔

12.14. In a nucleus, a neutron changes into a proton, the atomic number changes by one, the mass number will:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) remain the same — the neutron is not lost, it becomes the proton, so the total count of nucleons A is unchanged even though Z rises by one. نیوٹران ضائع نہیں ہوتا بلکہ پروٹان بن جاتا ہے، اس لیے نیوکلیانوں کی کل تعداد A وہی رہتی ہے اگرچہ Z ایک بڑھ جاتا ہے۔

12.15. The electroweak theory was introduced by:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) Dr. Abdul Salam — Salam, with Glashow and Weinberg, unified the electromagnetic and weak forces into the electroweak theory (1979 Nobel Prize). ⚠️ Honesty flag: the chapter's own text does not name Salam — this answer comes from the history of the electroweak unification the question asks about, not from a passage in §§12.1–12.12. ڈاکٹر عبدالسلام نے گلیشو اور وائن برگ کے ساتھ برقی مقناطیسی اور کمزور قوت کو الیکٹروویک نظریے میں یکجا کیا۔ نوٹ: باب کی عبارت میں سلام کا نام نہیں آتا، یہ جواب اس نظریے کی تاریخ سے ہے۔

12.16. The asymmetry of matter and anti-matter is due to imbalance number of:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) baryon — §12.9 says the asymmetry is due to the violation of conservation of baryon number, i.e. an imbalance in the number of baryons and anti-baryons. باب کے مطابق مادے اور ضد مادے کی عدم مساوات بیریان عدد کے تحفظ کی خلاف ورزی، یعنی بیریان اور ضد بیریان کی تعداد کے عدم توازن کی وجہ سے ہے۔

12.17. Which one of the following particle is responsible for the mass of the fundamental particle?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) Higgs boson — the Higgs boson is associated with the Higgs field that permeates all of space, and particles get their mass by interacting with that field. ہگز بوسان ہگز فیلڈ سے جڑا ہے جو پوری کائنات میں پھیلا ہے؛ ذرات اس فیلڈ سے تعامل کر کے کمیت حاصل کرتے ہیں۔

12.18. A proton is composed of up and down quarks, the order of quarks is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) uud — two up quarks and one down quark give 2⁄3 + 2⁄3 − 1⁄3 = +1, the proton's charge; udd is the neutron. پروٹان میں دو اپ اور ایک ڈاؤن کوارک ہوتے ہیں: 2/3 + 2/3 − 1/3 = +1؛ udd نیوٹران ہے۔

12.19. The number of quarks composed of a neutron is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 3 — a neutron is udd, three quarks, giving 2⁄3 − 1⁄3 − 1⁄3 = 0 charge. نیوٹران udd ہے یعنی تین کوارکس، جن کا مجموعی چارج صفر بنتا ہے۔

Isotopes of one element have the same number of protons — the same atomic number Z — so they are the same element with the same chemistry. They differ in their number of neutrons, so their mass numbers A differ. Example from the chapter: carbon always has 6 protons, but 126C, 136C and 146C have 6, 7 and 8 neutrons; the first two are stable and carbon-14 is unstable. ایک عنصر کے آئسوٹوپس میں پروٹان برابر ہوتے ہیں اس لیے وہ ایک ہی عنصر ہوتے ہیں، لیکن نیوٹران کی تعداد مختلف ہوتی ہے اس لیے ماس عدد مختلف ہوتا ہے۔

12.2. Identify the element that has 87 nucleons and 50 neutrons.

Step 1: A = 87 nucleons, N = 50 neutrons. Step 2: A = N + Z, so Z = A − N = 87 − 50 = 37. Step 3: atomic number 37 is rubidium (Rb), so the nuclide is 8737Rb. A = N + Z سے Z = 87 − 50 = 37 نکلتا ہے اور ایٹمی عدد 37 روبیڈیم (Rb) ہے، اس لیے یہ 8737Rb ہے۔

12.3. What are the similarities and differences between the strong nuclear force and the electromagnetic force?

Similarities: both are fundamental forces, both can attract, and both act between particles inside and around the atom. Differences: the strong force is far stronger (relative strength 1 against about 10−2) but very short-range (under 10−15 m), and it attracts all nucleons alike regardless of charge; the electromagnetic force is weaker but infinite in range, follows an inverse-square law, and can attract or repel depending on the charges. دونوں بنیادی قوتیں ہیں اور دونوں کشش کر سکتی ہیں۔ فرق یہ ہے کہ مضبوط قوت زیادہ طاقتور مگر بہت کم فاصلے تک ہے اور ہر نیوکلیان کو یکساں کھینچتی ہے، جبکہ برقی مقناطیسی قوت کمزور مگر لامحدود فاصلے تک ہے اور چارج کے لحاظ سے کشش یا دفع دونوں کر سکتی ہے۔

12.4. Fill in the missing particle or nucleus: (a) 4520Ca → ? + e− + ν̄   (b) 5625Cu* → ? + γ

(a) ? = 4521Sc (scandium-45). Working: the emitted electron shows this is β−-decay, so a neutron becomes a proton: A stays 45 and Z rises by one, 20 → 21. Check: A: 45 = 45 ✓; Z: 20 = 21 + (−1) ✓. Element 21 is scandium. (b) ? = 5625Cu (the same nucleus, in its ground state). The star means the copper nucleus is excited; γ-emission only carries away energy, so A and Z do not change at all. ⚠️ Honesty flag: the book prints no answer key for short questions, so both fill-ins are worked out here from conservation of A and Z. (a) بیٹا مائنس ڈیکے میں Z ایک بڑھتا ہے اور A وہی رہتا ہے، اس لیے جواب 4521Sc ہے۔ (b) ستارہ پرجوش نیوکلیس کی علامت ہے؛ گاما اخراج سے صرف توانائی نکلتی ہے، اس لیے وہی 5625Cu رہتا ہے۔

12.5. Why neutrino must be released in the positron emission?

In β+-decay a proton becomes a neutron and a positron, but the positron alone cannot balance the books. Energy and momentum must be conserved, and lepton number must be conserved too: the positron is a lepton (lepton number +1), so a neutrino — also a lepton — must be emitted with it to keep the total lepton number and the shared energy right. It is the same reason Pauli proposed the neutrino in 1930: without a third, nearly invisible particle, the energy accounts of beta decay simply would not add up. بیٹا پلس ڈیکے میں توانائی، مومینٹم اور لیپٹان عدد کے تحفظ کے لیے نیوٹرینو کا نکلنا ضروری ہے؛ اس کے بغیر توانائی کا حساب پورا نہیں ہوتا، اسی لیے پاؤلی نے 1930ء میں اس کی پیش گوئی کی تھی۔

12.6. Distinguish between fermions and bosons.

Fermions have half-integer spin (½, 3⁄2, …) and obey Pauli's exclusion principle — only one particle of a kind can occupy a given quantum state. Electrons, protons and neutrons are fermions. Bosons have zero or whole-number spin (0, 1, …) and do not obey the exclusion principle; they follow Bose–Einstein statistics, so many can share one state. Photons (spin 1) and pions (spin 0) are bosons. فرمیان کا اسپن آدھا عدد ہوتا ہے اور وہ پاؤلی کے اصول پر عمل کرتے ہیں؛ بوسان کا اسپن صفر یا مکمل عدد ہوتا ہے اور وہ اس اصول پر عمل نہیں کرتے۔

12.7. How does strong force hold the nucleus?

Every proton repels every other proton electrically, and in a heavy nucleus that repulsion is large. The strong nuclear force answers it because it is stronger than the electromagnetic repulsion at nuclear distances, and it attracts every nucleon to every other — proton to proton, neutron to neutron, proton to neutron. So the nucleus holds together as long as nucleons stay within the force's short range (under 10−15 m); neutrons help too, adding strong attraction without adding any electrical repulsion. مضبوط نیوکلیائی قوت پروٹانوں کی باہمی برقی دفع سے زیادہ طاقتور ہے اور ہر نیوکلیان کو ہر دوسرے نیوکلیان سے کھینچتی ہے؛ نیوٹران بغیر چارج کے صرف کشش بڑھاتے ہیں، اس لیے نیوکلیس جڑا رہتا ہے۔

12.8. Can there be pair production for photons having energy 20 keV? Explain briefly.

No. Pair production must create an electron and a positron, whose rest-mass energies add up to 2mec² = 1.02 MeV = 1020 keV. A 20 keV photon carries only about one-fiftieth of that minimum, so it cannot possibly pay the mass-energy price — and even a photon just under 1.02 MeV fails. نہیں۔ جوڑا بنانے کے لیے کم از کم 1.02 MeV یعنی 1020 keV توانائی چاہیے، جبکہ 20 keV اس کا تقریباً پچاسواں حصہ ہے، اس لیے پیئر پروڈکشن ناممکن ہے۔

12.9. What is the difference between beta particle and electron?

In mass, charge and spin there is no difference — a β-particle is an electron (or, in β+-decay, a positron). The difference is only in origin: an ordinary electron sits in an orbit around the nucleus, while a β-particle is created inside the nucleus at the moment of emission, when a neutron turns into a proton (β−) or a proton turns into a neutron (β+). That is why the book stresses that β-particles are indistinguishable from orbital electrons once they are out — they are the same particle, born in a different place. وزن اور چارج میں کوئی فرق نہیں؛ فرق صرف پیدائش کی جگہ کا ہے: عام الیکٹران مدار میں ہوتا ہے جبکہ بیٹا ذرہ ڈیکے کے وقت نیوکلیس کے اندر بنتا ہے۔

12.10. How do a proton and a neutron convert to each other?

Neutron → proton: β−-decay, 10n → 11p + 0−1e + ν̄; at quark level a down quark flips to an up quark (d → u). Proton → neutron: β+-decay, where a proton becomes a neutron plus a positron and a neutrino; at quark level an up quark flips to a down quark (u → d). In both cases the weak nuclear force does the changing, and A stays the same while Z moves by one. نیوٹران بیٹا مائنس ڈیکے سے پروٹان بنتا ہے (d کوارک u میں بدلتا ہے) اور پروٹان بیٹا پلس ڈیکے سے نیوٹران بنتا ہے (u کوارک d میں بدلتا ہے)؛ دونوں میں کمزور قوت کام کرتی ہے اور A وہی رہتا ہے۔

12.11. Why does beta-decay have a continuous energy spectrum and alpha-decay have a discrete energy spectrum?

It comes down to how many particles share the decay energy. In α-decay the energy is split in a fixed way between just two bodies — the α-particle and the recoiling daughter — so every α-particle from one nuclide gets the same sharply defined kinetic energy: discrete spikes. In β-decay there are three bodies — daughter, β-particle and (anti-)neutrino — and the energy is shared between the β-particle and the neutrino in varying proportions, so β-energies run continuously from zero to a maximum. The sum is the same every time, so energy is conserved in both cases.

12.12. Differentiate between hadron and leptons with examples.

Hadrons experience the strong force, are composite (made of quarks), and divide into baryons (three quarks: proton, neutron) and mesons (quark–anti-quark: pion, kaon). Leptons do not experience the strong force, interact only weakly or electromagnetically, and appear truly fundamental with no internal structure: electron, muon, tau and their neutrinos. ہیڈران مضبوط قوت محسوس کرتے ہیں اور کوارکس سے بنے ہوتے ہیں (بیریان: پروٹان، نیوٹران؛ میسان: پائین، کیان)۔ لیپٹان مضبوط قوت محسوس نہیں کرتے اور بنیادی معلوم ہوتے ہیں (الیکٹران، میوان، ٹاؤ اور ان کے نیوٹرینو)۔

12.13. Why electron-positron pair cannot decay into a single photon?

Because one photon cannot satisfy energy and momentum conservation at the same time. In the pair's rest frame the total momentum is zero, but a single photon always carries momentum p = E/c in some direction, so momentum would not balance. Two photons flying off in opposite directions with 0.51 MeV each solve both: their momenta cancel and their energies add up to the pair's total mass-energy, 1.02 MeV. ایک فوٹان توانائی اور مومینٹم دونوں کا تحفظ ایک ساتھ پورا نہیں کر سکتا، کیونکہ اس کا مومینٹم کبھی صفر نہیں ہوتا۔ دو فوٹان مخالف سمتوں میں جا کر مومینٹم کو صفر اور توانائی کو 1.02 MeV پورا کرتے ہیں۔

12.14. State the role of Higgs Boson in the generation of mass in modern physics theories.

The Higgs boson is the visible sign of the Higgs field, which permeates all of space. Particles gain mass by interacting with this field: strong interactors (like the W and Z bosons) become heavy, while particles that do not interact with it (like photons) keep zero rest mass. The Higgs boson itself, discovered at CERN in 2012, has a mass of about 125 GeV/c² and decays rapidly; it also offers a possible window on the early universe and dark matter. ہگز بوسان ہگز فیلڈ کی علامت ہے جو پوری کائنات میں پھیلا ہے؛ ذرات اس سے تعامل کر کے کمیت حاصل کرتے ہیں، جو زیادہ تعامل کرے وہ بھاری اور جو نہ کرے (جیسے فوٹان) اس کا ریسٹ ماس صفر رہتا ہے۔

12.15. What are Mesons? Give examples.

Mesons are hadrons made of one quark and one anti-quark (an even number of quarks, usually two), so they are bosons. They feel the strong force, they are composite rather than fundamental, and they are typically unstable. Examples from the chapter: the pion (π) — including π+ = u + anti-d — and the kaon (K°), produced with a lambda particle when a pion strikes a proton. میسان ایک کوارک اور ایک ضد کوارک سے بنے ہیڈران ہیں، اس لیے یہ بوسان ہیں۔ مثالیں: پائین (π) اور کیان (K°)۔

Constructed Response Questions

12.1. Is meson, a boson or fermion? Give reason.

A boson. A meson is a quark–anti-quark pair, and the spins of its two spin-½ quarks combine to whole-number spin (0 or 1 for the mesons in this chapter — pions have spin zero). Whole-number spin means boson, so mesons do not obey Pauli's exclusion principle and follow Bose–Einstein statistics. ⚠️ Honesty flag: the book states mesons are bosons and gives pion spin zero, but it does not spell out this spin-addition argument; the reasoning here is assembled from §§12.5–12.6. میسان بوسان ہے کیونکہ اس کے دو کوارکس کا اسپن مل کر مکمل عدد (0 یا 1) بنتا ہے، اور مکمل اسپن والے ذرات بوسان ہوتے ہیں۔

12.2. Why does an alpha emitter emit alpha particles instead of four separate nucleons?

Because the α-particle is an exceptionally tightly bound little package. Two protons and two neutrons bound together as helium-4 carry much more binding energy than the same four nucleons would on their own, so throwing out a ready-made α-particle releases more energy — a larger Q-value — than ejecting four separate nucleons ever could. Nature takes the path that pays best in energy, and for heavy unstable nuclei that path is the α-particle. ⚠️ Honesty flag — derived answer: the book describes α-decay and the Q-value but does not give this "why not four separate nucleons" argument as a passage; the reasoning follows from binding energy and the Q-value idea in §12.4. الفا ذرہ (ہیلیم۔4) بہت مضبوطی سے بندھا ہوا پیکج ہے؛ اسے خارج کرنے سے چار الگ نیوکلیان خارج کرنے کی نسبت زیادہ توانائی (زیادہ Q-value) ملتی ہے، اس لیے نیوکلیس یہی راستہ اختیار کرتا ہے۔

12.3. Which is more energetic alpha decay or beta decay? Justify your answer.

Alpha decay, in general. A typical α-particle leaves with a sharply defined kinetic energy of several MeV (commonly around 4–9 MeV for heavy emitters), because the whole Q-value of the decay, minus a small recoil share, lands in the one particle. In β-decay the available energy is instead shared with a neutrino, so any single β-particle usually carries only part of it, and β-endpoint energies are typically smaller. So per emitted particle, the α-particle usually walks away with more energy. ⚠️ Honesty flag — derived answer: the book gives no table of α versus β energies for this comparison; the judgement follows from the discrete-versus-continuous spectra (§12.4) and the energy-sharing argument. عام طور پر الفا ڈیکے زیادہ توانائی والا ہوتا ہے کیونکہ پوری توانائی تقریباً ایک ہی ذرے کو ملتی ہے (عام طور پر کئی MeV)، جبکہ بیٹا ڈیکے میں توانائی نیوٹرینو کے ساتھ تقسیم ہو جاتی ہے۔

12.4. A nucleus undergoes gamma decay, emitting gamma ray photon with energy 1.5 MeV. Calculate. (i) frequency of gamma ray (ii) wavelength of gamma ray (iii) momentum of gamma ray

Given: E = 1.5 MeV. Step 1 — convert to joules: 1 eV = 1.6 × 10−19 J, so E = 1.5 × 106 × 1.6 × 10−19 = 2.4 × 10−13 J. (i) Frequency: E = hf, so f = E/h = 2.4 × 10−13 ÷ 6.63 × 10−34 = 3.62 × 1020 Hz. (ii) Wavelength: λ = c/f = 3 × 108 ÷ 3.62 × 1020 = 8.29 × 10−13 m. (iii) Momentum: p = E/c = 2.4 × 10−13 ÷ 3 × 108 = 8.0 × 10−22 kg m/s. (Using h = 6.626 × 10−34 J s gives f = 3.63 × 1020 Hz and λ = 8.27 × 10−13 m — the same to two significant figures.) پہلے توانائی کو جول میں بدلو: 2.4 × 10−13 جول۔ پھر (i) فریکوئنسی f = E/h = 3.62 × 1020 ہرٹز، (ii) طول موج λ = c/f = 8.29 × 10−13 میٹر، (iii) مومینٹم p = E/c = 8.0 × 10−22 کلوگرام میٹر فی سیکنڈ۔

12.5. Why does the α-particles not make physical contact with the nucleus when headed directly towards it?

Because the α-particle never gets the chance. It carries charge +2e and the nucleus carries a large positive charge, so as it approaches, the electrical repulsion grows steeply and eats up its kinetic energy. At some closest distance of approach the α-particle momentarily stops and turns back — it is scattered, not swallowed. The nucleus also has no hard surface to "touch": it is a tiny cluster of nucleons held by a force whose range is under 10−15 m, and the α-particle is turned away by the Coulomb repulsion long before it could reach that range. ⚠️ Honesty flag — derived answer: the book does not discuss α-scattering or distance of closest approach in this chapter; this answer uses the Coulomb repulsion between two positive charges and the short range of the nuclear force from §§12.2 and 12.4. الفا ذرہ (+2e) اور نیوکلیس (مثبت چارج) کے درمیان برقی دفع فاصلہ کم ہونے پر اتنی بڑھ جاتی ہے کہ ذرہ رک کر واپس مڑ جاتا ہے؛ وہ نیوکلیس کی حد تک پہنچ ہی نہیں پاتا۔

Comprehensive Questions

12.1. What is meant by radioactivity? Compare the properties and behaviour of three types of radiations.

Radioactivity is the spontaneous emission of radiation by unstable nuclei. Nuclei with atomic numbers above 82 are naturally unstable and emit radiation on their own (natural radioactivity); unstable isotopes can also be produced artificially by bombarding stable elements with high-energy particles. Comparison: α-particles are helium nuclei (charge +2e, heavy), bend towards the negative plate in an electric field, travel only a few centimetres in air, ionize most (about 104 ion pairs/mm) and are stopped by paper; β-particles are fast electrons or positrons (charge −e or +e, light), bend the other way and further, travel several metres, ionize moderately (about 102/mm) and are stopped by 1–5 mm of aluminium; γ-rays are chargeless photons, go straight through an electric field, travel at light speed, ionize least (about 1/mm), obey the inverse-square law and need 1–10 cm of lead. In short: α ionizes most but penetrates least, γ penetrates most but ionizes least, and β sits between the two.

۱۔ تابکاری غیر مستحکم نیوکلیس سے خود بخود شعاعوں کا اخراج ہے۔ ایٹمی عدد 82 سے زیادہ والے نیوکلیس قدرتی طور پر تابکار ہوتے ہیں، اور لیبارٹری میں بھی مصنوعی تابکار آئسوٹوپس بنائے جا سکتے ہیں۔

12.2. Elaborate the phenomenon of beta-positive decay and beta-negative decay with examples.

Beta-negative (β−) decay happens when a nuclide's neutron-to-proton ratio is too large. A neutron inside the nucleus decays: 10n → 11p + 0−1e + ν̄. No nucleon is lost, so A is unchanged and Z rises by one — the element changes. Book example: 23490Th → 23491Pa + 0−1e + ν̄ (thorium becomes protactinium). The emitted electron is created in the nucleus at the moment of decay, not taken from an orbit. Beta-positive (β+) decay is the mirror image, for nuclides whose N/P ratio is too small: a proton decays into a neutron, a positron and a neutrino, AZX → AZ−1X′ + 0+1e + ν. Again A is unchanged and Z falls by one. Book example: 1910Ne → 199F + 0+1e + ν (neon becomes fluorine). In both cases the (anti-)neutrino is essential: it carries away part of the energy and keeps lepton number conserved.

12.3. What is the difference between matter and anti-matter? Discuss reasons why our universe is almost entirely composed of matter.

Difference: for every particle there is an anti-particle with the same rest mass but opposite charge and magnetic moment — electron versus positron, proton versus anti-proton, neutrino versus anti-neutrino. Anti-particles are usually written with a bar over the symbol. Matter and anti-matter annihilate on meeting, turning their mass into energy (usually γ-photons). Why is our universe almost all matter? The book's answer is that experiments point to a violation of baryon-number conservation: an imbalance between baryons and anti-baryons in the early universe, and if particle–anti-particle symmetry is also violated, a mechanism exists for making more quarks than anti-quarks and more leptons than anti-leptons, leaving a universe of matter behind. The figures the book gives are about 5% ordinary matter (within which roughly 71% hydrogen and 24% helium atoms), with no anti-hydrogen or anti-helium in the universe's composition. But the book ends honestly: the asymmetry of matter and anti-matter is still an unsolved mystery.

۳۔ کائنات کا تقریباً 5 فیصد عام مادہ ہے جس میں تقریباً 71 فیصد ہائیڈروجن اور 24 فیصد ہیلیم ہے، اور اس میں اینٹی ہائیڈروجن یا اینٹی ہیلیم کا کوئی حصہ نہیں۔ اس کے باوجود یہ مسئلہ ابھی تک حل طلب معمہ ہے۔

12.4. Explain the phenomenon of pair annihilation with an example. Explain the utility of its principle in the medical field.

Pair annihilation is the reverse of pair production: a particle meets its own anti-particle and both disappear, their mass-energy becoming radiation. The book's example is the electron and positron: e− + e+ → γ + γ, with each γ-photon carrying 0.51 MeV, the rest-mass energy of one electron. Two photons, not one, are produced, flying in opposite directions so that energy and momentum are both conserved. The same can happen for proton–anti-proton, lepton–anti-lepton and quark–anti-quark pairs. Medical utility: this is the principle behind the PET scan (positron emission tomography). A tracer carrying a positron-emitting isotope is given to the patient; each emitted positron quickly meets an electron in the body and annihilates, sending two 0.51 MeV γ-photons in exactly opposite directions. Detectors placed around the patient catch these photon pairs, and from their lines of flight a computer builds an image of where the tracer — and therefore the body's activity — is concentrated. ⚠️ Honesty flag: the book asks for the medical utility without naming any technique; PET scanning is the standard, textbook application of positron annihilation, stated here as that application rather than as a book quotation.

12.5. Explain the law of conservation of energy and momentum in electron-positron pair annihilation.

Start with what goes in: an electron and a positron, each of rest-mass energy mec² = 0.51 MeV, so the total energy available is 1.02 MeV (plus any kinetic energy they had). What comes out must carry exactly that energy and exactly the total momentum. One photon cannot do both jobs: in the pair's rest frame the total momentum is zero, yet a single photon always has momentum E/c in one direction. Two photons solve it: each takes 0.51 MeV, so their energies add to 1.02 MeV, and they fly in opposite directions with equal and opposite momenta, so the total momentum stays zero. Energy is conserved, momentum is conserved, and charge is conserved too ( −1 + 1 = 0 on both sides). That is why annihilation always gives two photons in the simplest case.

12.6. Describe protons and neutrons in terms of their quark composition.

Neither the proton nor the neutron is fundamental; each is a baryon made of three quarks, bound by gluons. The proton is uud — two up quarks and one down quark. Its charge works out as 2⁄3 + 2⁄3 + (−1⁄3) = +1, and its three quarks carry one colour each (red, green, blue), making it colourless overall. The neutron is udd — one up quark and two down quarks. Its charge is 2⁄3 + (−1⁄3) + (−1⁄3) = 0, which is why the neutron is neutral despite being made of charged parts, and it too is colourless. That one-quark difference — the second up in the proton replaced by a down in the neutron — is the whole difference between the two nucleons, and beta decay is simply that quark flipping from one flavour to the other.

12.7. Describe four fundamental forces in nature.

(1) Gravity — the weakest (about 10−38 of the strong force) but infinite in range, always attractive, proportional to the product of the masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance; it rules planets and stars but is negligible inside the atom. (2) Electromagnetic force — about 10−2 in strength, also infinite in range and inverse-square; it governs chemical bonds, electricity, magnetism and light, and Maxwell's 1861 equations showed electricity and magnetism are one force. (3) Weak nuclear force — about 10−13, range under 10−18 m; it runs radioactive decay and neutrino interactions, and uniquely it can change one particle into another, which is what makes fusion in stars possible. (4) Strong nuclear force — strength 1, range under 10−15 m; it attracts all nucleons to each other and holds the nucleus together against electrical repulsion. Between quarks it is carried by gluons and described by quantum chromodynamics.

12.8. Describe the classification of elementary particles.

Elementary particles — those with no internal structure — are sorted in several overlapping ways. By spin: fermions (half-integer spin, obeying Pauli's exclusion principle) versus bosons (whole-number spin, following Bose–Einstein statistics). By the strong force: hadrons, which feel it and are composite, versus leptons, which do not and appear fundamental. Hadrons split into baryons (three quarks, fermions — proton, neutron, lambda) and mesons (quark–anti-quark, bosons — pion, kaon). Leptons come in six: electron, muon and tau, each with its neutrino, plus their anti-particles. By force carried: the gauge bosons — photon (electromagnetism), gluons (strong force), W+, W− and Z (weak force), and the proposed graviton (gravity) — plus the Higgs boson, which is tied to the field that gives particles mass. The whole scheme, quarks plus leptons plus these bosons, is the Standard Model — still incomplete, since it does not explain gravity, dark matter or dark energy.

Numerical Problems

12.1. Uranium-238 is an alpha emitter. In the process, it is transmutated into a daughter nucleus. What is the mass number A and charge number Z of the daughter nucleus? What is its chemical symbol?

In α-decay the parent loses an α-particle (42He), so A falls by 4 and Z falls by 2. Step 1: A = 238 − 4 = 234. Step 2: Z = 92 − 2 = 90. Step 3: element 90 is thorium (Th), so the daughter is 23490Th. This matches the book's printed answer (A = 234, Z = 90, Thorium). الفا ڈیکے میں A میں 4 اور Z میں 2 کی کمی آتی ہے: A = 238 − 4 = 234، Z = 92 − 2 = 90، اور عنصر 90 تھوریم (Th) ہے۔

12.2. Polonium 21884Po is a beta minus emitter. What will be the mass number A and charge number Z of the daughter nucleus?

In β−-decay a neutron becomes a proton, so no nucleon is lost: A is unchanged and Z rises by one. Step 1: A = 218. Step 2: Z = 84 + 1 = 85. Step 3: element 85 is astatine, so the daughter is 21885At. This matches the book's printed answer (A = 218, Z = 85). بیٹا مائنس ڈیکے میں A وہی رہتا ہے اور Z ایک بڑھتا ہے: A = 218، Z = 84 + 1 = 85، یعنی بیٹی نیوکلیس 21885At ہے۔

12.3. Nitrogen 147N bombarded by alpha particle results into 178O. What is the product particle in this nuclear reaction?

Write the reaction with an unknown particle abX: 147N + 42He → 178O + abX. Step 1 — balance A: 14 + 4 = 17 + a, so a = 18 − 17 = 1. Step 2 — balance Z: 7 + 2 = 8 + b, so b = 9 − 8 = 1. Step 3: a particle with A = 1, Z = 1 is a proton, 11H. This matches the book's printed answer (¹H proton). A کا توازن: 14 + 4 = 17 + a سے a = 1؛ Z کا توازن: 7 + 2 = 8 + b سے b = 1؛ اس لیے نامعلوم ذرہ پروٹان 11H ہے۔

12.4. Show that nucleon number A and charge number Z are conserved in the numerical question 12.3.

Take the completed reaction from 12.3: 147N + 42He → 178O + 11H. Nucleon number A: left side 14 + 4 = 18; right side 17 + 1 = 18. Equal ✓. Charge number Z: left side 7 + 2 = 9; right side 8 + 1 = 9. Equal ✓. Both totals match on the two sides, so A and Z are conserved. مکمل مساوات میں بائیں طرف A = 14 + 4 = 18 اور دائیں طرف A = 17 + 1 = 18؛ بائیں طرف Z = 7 + 2 = 9 اور دائیں طرف Z = 8 + 1 = 9؛ دونوں برابر ہیں، اس لیے A اور Z محفوظ ہیں۔

12.5. Determine the rest-mass energy of electron in eV. Its rest-mass is 0.000555 u?

Use E = mc² with the book's conversion 1 u = 931 MeV. Step 1: E = 0.000555 u × 931 MeV/u = 0.516705 MeV. Step 2: round to three significant figures: 0.517 MeV. Step 3: in electron-volts, 0.517 MeV = 5.17 × 105 eV. This matches the book's printed answer (0.517 MeV). (Using the more precise 931.5 MeV/u gives 0.51698 MeV — the same 0.517 MeV.) کتاب کے مطابق 1u = 931 MeV، اس لیے E = 0.000555 × 931 = 0.517 MeV یعنی 5.17 × 105 eV۔

12.6. Calculate the Q-value for the reaction taking place in Rutherford's experiment on artificial disintegration of nitrogen by bombardment with alpha particles. Relative masses are: 147N = 14.007515 u, 42He = 4.003837 u, 178O = 17.004533 u and 11H = 1.008142 u.

The reaction is 147N + 42He → 178O + 11H, and Q = (mass of reactants − mass of products) × 931.5 MeV/u. Step 1 — reactants: 14.007515 + 4.003837 = 18.011352 u. Step 2 — products: 17.004533 + 1.008142 = 18.012675 u. Step 3 — mass difference: Δm = 18.011352 − 18.012675 = −0.001323 u. Step 4: Q = −0.001323 × 931.5 = −1.232 MeV ≈ −1.23 MeV. The negative sign means the reaction absorbs energy (it is endoergic): the incoming α-particle must supply at least 1.23 MeV of kinetic energy for it to happen. This matches the book's printed answer (−1.23 MeV). ری ایکٹنٹس کا وزن 18.011352u اور پراڈکٹس کا 18.012675u ہے؛ فرق −0.001323u ہے، اس لیے Q = −0.001323 × 931.5 = −1.23 MeV۔ منفی علامت کا مطلب ہے کہ یہ عمل توانائی جذب کرتا ہے۔

This chapter is the story of going smaller and smaller. It starts inside the atom, in the nucleus (12.1), where protons and neutrons — nucleons — are counted by Z and A, and where isotopes show that the same element can carry different numbers of neutrons. Then it steps back to the four forces (12.2) that run everything, and explains why the nucleus does not fly apart: the strong force beats electrical repulsion at tiny range. Matter meets anti-matter (12.3) with Dirac's prediction and Anderson's positron, and energy turns into matter and back again in pair production and annihilation — remember the 1.02 MeV threshold and the two 0.51 MeV photons. Radioactivity (12.4) gives you α, β and γ, three radiations you must be able to tell apart by charge, deflection, ionization and penetration, and then the three decays with their equations: α takes Z down 2 and A down 4, β changes Z by one and leaves A alone, γ changes nothing but energy. The energy spectra clinch it: α discrete, β continuous, because the neutrino shares β's energy. Finally the chapter goes deeper still — fundamental particles (12.5), quarks (12.6) with their fractional charges and colours, beta decay as a quark flip and QCD, the Higgs boson (12.7) and the conservation laws (12.8) you can use to check any equation — and ends by looking outward: the matter–anti-matter mystery (12.9), the plasma universe (12.10), field theory and string theory (12.11) and the Standard Model (12.12), which explains the 5% we know and honestly admits the 95% it does not.

Revision guidance: learn Table 12.1 (strengths and ranges) and Table 12.2 (α/β/γ properties) as two tables, not as paragraphs. Practise writing the decay equations from the Z/A rules until you can do Short 12.4 and Numerical 12.1–12.4 without looking. Drill the quark charges until uud = +1 and udd = 0 feel automatic, and always check a decay against A, Z, baryon number and lepton number before you call it done. For the long questions, write the β− and β+ examples (thorium and neon) from memory, and be ready to explain the PET scan as the medical use of annihilation. Work the exercise with the book closed first, then open the answers — especially the two worked numericals, 12.5 and 12.6, where the unit step (u → MeV) is where marks are usually lost.
