ENGLISH

In everyday talk, "work" can mean anything tiring — homework, housework, a long day at the shop. Physics narrows the word down sharply. Work is done only when two things happen together: a force acts on a body, and the body actually moves — it is displaced — while that force acts. Push hard against a wall all afternoon and you will be exhausted, but in physics the work done is zero, because the wall never moved. That single test — did it move? — settles most confusion about this chapter.

Start with the simplest case, the one the book opens with. A constant force F pulls an object, and the object moves a distance d in exactly the direction of the force. Then the work W is just the product of the two magnitudes:

W = Fd  (4.1)

Real life is rarely that tidy. Usually the force points one way and the motion goes another — you drag a crate by a rope held at an angle, for instance. Only the part of the force that points along the motion does any work. If the angle between force and displacement is θ, that useful component is F cos θ, and the formula becomes W = (F cos θ) d = Fd cos θ (4.2). Written with vectors it is the dot product, W = F · d (4.3), which is also why work is a scalar quantity: it has size but no direction of its own.

The unit follows straight from the formula: force (newton) times distance (metre) gives the joule, so 1 J = 1 N m. And the angle decides the sign, which examiners love to ask about: if θ < 90°, cos θ is positive and the work is positive; if θ = 90°, cos θ is zero and no work is done (that is why carrying a bag horizontally at steady speed does no work against gravity — gravity pulls down, you move sideways); if θ > 90°, cos θ is negative and the work is negative, as when friction drags backwards on a sliding box.

📌 Book note: the chapter's learning outcomes promise that by the end you will be able to derive kinetic energy from the equations of motion, write the absolute potential energy of a body in the gravitational field (including escape velocity), read work off a force–displacement graph, tell conservative forces from non-conservative ones, and use the work–energy theorem in a resistive medium. Every section below ticks one of those boxes.

Not every force stays put. A rocket climbing away from Earth feels gravity weakening with every kilometre, because gravity falls off as the inverse square of distance. A spring pulls harder the more you stretch it. In both cases W = Fd cannot be used directly, because there is no single F to put in. The book's way out is beautifully simple: chop the journey into tiny steps.

Picture a particle travelling a curved path from P to Q. Cut the path into n short intervals, Δd₁, Δd₂, …, Δdₙ, with forces F₁, F₂, …, Fₙ acting during them. Over one tiny interval the force is almost constant, so the work there is about Fᵢ cos θᵢ Δdᵢ. Add all the little bits and you get the total, W = Σ Fᵢ cos θᵢ Δdᵢ (4.4). Now shrink the intervals: the more pieces you cut, the closer the sum comes to the truth, and when Δd → 0 the sum becomes exact (4.5).

Drawn on a graph, this has a meaning you can see. Plot F cos θ against displacement d, and each little rectangle Fᵢ cos θᵢ Δdᵢ is a strip of area under the curve. So the whole area under the curve between P and Q is the work done by the variable force. That one sentence answers a whole family of graph questions: whatever shape the curve makes, find its area — rectangles, triangles, whatever pieces it breaks into — and that area, in joules, is the work.

Example 4.1 (book): a force varies with distance as shown in the book's graph. From d = 0 to d = 4 m the force is a steady 5 N, so the rectangle gives 4 m × 5 N = 20 J. From d = 4 m to d = 6 m the force falls to zero, making a triangle of base 2 m and height 5 N: ½ × 2 m × 5 N = 5 J. Total work = 20 J + 5 J = 25 J. Notice how the graph did all the physics — no new formula was needed, only areas.

Take a ball from point A on the ground to point B on top of a wall, height h above. You could lift it straight up, carry it around the long way, or swing it along a winding path — and if the only force doing work is gravity, the work done by gravity comes out the same every time: −mgh. The minus sign is because gravity pulls down while the ball rises; the work done by gravity is negative, while the work you do lifting it is +mgh. The path never enters the answer. That is the defining magic of a conservative force.

The book proves it the honest way, path by path. Along path 1 (across, then up), the horizontal stretch costs nothing — weight acts at 90° to it — and the vertical stretch gives −mgh, so the total is −mgh. Along path 2 (up, then across) the same split gives −mgh + 0 = −mgh. Along a smooth curve, break it into tiny horizontal and vertical steps: the horizontal steps contribute nothing, the vertical steps add up to the same total height h, and once again the answer is −mgh. So the book can state it flatly: work done by a gravitational force is independent of the path followed.

That gives the definition examiners want word for word: if the work done by a force in moving an object between two points is independent of the path followed, or the work done in a closed path is zero, the force is called a conservative force. Check the closed-path part yourself: lift the ball up (gravity does −mgh) and let it fall back down (gravity does +mgh), and the round trip totals zero. Besides gravity, the book names two more examples: the electrostatic force and the elastic spring force.

📌 Book question: the book itself asks — can you prove that the work done along a closed path such as ACBA or ADBA by the gravitational force is zero? Use the round-trip argument above: every rise is matched by an equal fall, so the positives and negatives cancel exactly.

Not every force is so well behaved. Slide a box across a rough floor from A to B, and friction fights you the whole way. Take the long way round and friction fights you for longer — it does more negative work, equal in size to the frictional force times the length of the path. A longer path means more work, so the work depends on the path chosen, and a round trip does not cancel out: friction opposes motion on the way back too, so it keeps doing negative work instead of undoing the first leg. That is the whole story of a non-conservative force.

The book's definition mirrors the conservative one exactly, which makes it easy to learn as a pair: a force is non-conservative if the work done by it in moving an object between two points, or in a closed path, depends on the path of motion. The textbook example is kinetic friction: it always acts opposite to the motion and does negative work of magnitude equal to the frictional force multiplied by the path length. Other examples the book lists are air resistance, tension in a string, normal force, and the propulsion force of a rocket.

Why does this matter beyond definitions? Because energy lost to a non-conservative force does not come back by retracing your steps. Push a box out and drag it back and you have done work twice over, with the energy ending up as heat in the floor and the box. Keep that picture in mind for section 4.8, where friction is exactly what stops total mechanical energy from staying constant.

Work alone does not tell you the whole story. Two students can both lift the same bag to the same shelf — same work — but one does it in two seconds and the other in a minute. The first is clearly "more powerful" in the physics sense, and that is exactly what power measures: power is the measure of the rate at which work is being done.

If work ΔW is done in a time interval Δt, the average power is Pav = ΔW / Δt (4.6). Shrink the interval to an instant and you get the instantaneous power, P = limit of ΔW/Δt as Δt → 0 (4.7). Since ΔW = F · Δd, dividing by Δt gives the very handy form P = F · v (4.8) — power is also the dot product of force and velocity. That form is the one to reach for whenever a question gives you a force and a speed instead of a time.

The SI unit of power is the watt: one joule of work done in one second, so 1 W = 1 J s⁻¹. Electricity bills, though, do not count joules — they count kilowatt-hours. One kilowatt-hour is the work done in one hour by an agency whose power is one kilowatt, so 1 kW h = 1000 W × 3600 s = 3.6 × 10⁶ J = 3.6 MJ. That conversion (3.6 million joules in one "unit") is a favourite exam fact, and it is also how the numerical on the 75 W fan in the exercise is solved.

Example 4.2 (book): a 70 kg man runs up a flight of stairs in 4.0 s; the vertical height is 4.5 m. Work done = mgh = 70 × 9.8 × 4.5 = 3087 J, so power = 3087 / 4.0 = 7.7 × 10² W. Note what was used: the vertical height, not the length of the stairs — gravity only cares about height, and that is a trap worth remembering.

📌 Do you know? (book): it takes about 9 × 10⁹ J of energy to make a car, and the car then uses about 1 × 10¹² J of energy from petrol in its lifetime — making the thing is a tiny fraction of the energy it will burn.

4.5 — Kinetic Energy۴.

ENGLISH

Energy of a body is its capacity to do work. There are two basic forms of mechanical energy, and this section is about the first: kinetic energy is the energy possessed by a body due to its motion, while potential energy (next section) comes from its position. A moving car has kinetic energy; that is why, when its engine is switched off, it does not stop at once — it keeps rolling, doing work against friction, until that energy is used up.

The book derives the formula from that very picture. A car of mass m, moving with speed v, is stopped by a friction force f over a distance d. The work the car does against friction is fd, and that work is its kinetic energy. Newton's second law gives f = ma (with the sign showing the force opposes motion), and the third equation of motion, 2aS = vf² − vi², with final speed 0 and initial speed v, gives 2(−f/m)d = −v². Rearranged, fd = ½mv², and since fd is the kinetic energy: K.E. = ½mv² (4.9). Its unit is the joule, like all work and energy.

Two things about the formula are worth feeling, not just memorising. First, speed matters more than mass: double the speed and the kinetic energy goes up four times, because speed is squared. Second, it explains braking distances — a car at twice the speed needs four times the distance to stop with the same brakes, which is why speed limits are not just about reaction time.

Example 4.3 (book): a car weighing 18620 N runs at 16 m s⁻¹ and is braked to rest in 80 m. Its mass is m = w/g = 18620 / 9.8 = 1900 kg. Setting ½mv² = fd gives ½ × 1900 × 16² = f × 80, so f = 243200 / 80 = 3040 N average frictional force.

📌 For your information (book): the chapter's energy table gives a feel for scale — burning a litre of petrol releases about 5 × 10⁷ J, a running person at 10 km h⁻¹ has about 3 × 10² J of kinetic energy, and the kinetic energy of one molecule of air is around 6 × 10⁻²¹ J. Same unit, wildly different worlds.

K.E. = ½mv² — speed is squaredv → K.E. = E2v → K.E. = 4E3v → K.E. = 9EDouble the speed, four times the energy — and four times the braking distance
4.5 — Potential Energy and Absolute Potential Energy۴.

ENGLISH

If kinetic energy is energy of motion, potential energy is the energy possessed by a body because of its position in a force field, or because of its constrained state. A stone held above the ground has it; so does a compressed spring — the energy stored in a squeezed or stretched spring, called elastic potential energy, is potential energy of the second kind, stored in its state rather than its height.

Near the Earth's surface, gravity is nearly constant and the familiar form works: lifting a mass m through height h stores P.E. = mgh. But the book asks a harder question, and it is one of the chapter's learning outcomes: what is the potential energy of a body far out in space, where gravity is not constant but weakens as the inverse square of distance? The answer needs a definition first. The absolute gravitational potential energy of an object at a certain position is the work done by the gravitational force in displacing the object from that position to infinity, where the force of gravity becomes zero.

The derivation chops the journey from r₁ to infinity into small steps of length Δr. In one step the force is nearly constant, F = GMm/r², and with a little algebra (the step's middle distance works out so that r² becomes r₁r₂) the work for that step is −GMm(1/r₁ − 1/r₂). Add all the steps and the middle terms cancel in a telescoping sum, leaving total work −GMm/r₁ when the far end goes to infinity. So the absolute potential energy at distance r from Earth's centre is U = −GMm/r, and on the surface (r = R) it is U₀ = −GMm/R (4.13).

Why negative? Because the zero of potential energy is set at infinity, and you would have to do work on the body — GMm/R of it — to drag it out there. As r grows, U becomes less negative, i.e. it increases; lifting a body raises its potential energy, exactly as mgh told you near the ground. The negative sign is also the book's way of saying Earth's field is attractive: left alone, things fall in, they do not drift away.

📌 Tidbit (book): more coal has been used since 1945 than was used in the whole of history before that — a reminder, tucked into this derivation, of how fast humanity's energy appetite has grown.

Throw a ball up and it comes back. Throw it harder and it goes higher before coming back. Keep increasing the throw, and eventually there is a speed at which it never comes back at all — it escapes Earth's gravitational field altogether. The initial velocity of an object with which it goes out of the Earth's gravitational field is known as escape velocity.

The derivation is an energy balance, and it is short enough to learn whole. To escape, the body's initial kinetic energy must pay for the whole climb in potential energy, from the surface value −GMm/R up to zero at infinity — an increase of GMm/R. Set them equal: ½mvesc² = GMm/R. The mass m cancels (which is why escape velocity does not depend on how heavy the object is), giving vesc = √(2GM/R) (4.14). Since g = GM/R², this can be rewritten as vesc = √(2gR) (4.15) — the form most questions ask for. Putting in Earth's g and R gives about 11.2 km s⁻¹ (the book's text rounds this to approximately 11 km s⁻¹).

Two common misunderstandings are worth killing now. First, escape velocity is about speed, not thrust: a rocket does not need to travel at 11.2 km s⁻¹ the whole way up — it escapes because its engines keep adding energy. The 11.2 km s⁻¹ figure is for a single unpowered throw. Second, direction does not matter (ignoring air): throw it straight up or at an angle, the energy bill is the same.

Whenever work is done on a body, its energy changes — and the work–energy theorem says exactly how. Take a body of mass m moving with velocity vi. A force F acts on it through a distance d and raises its velocity to vf. The third equation of motion gives 2ad = vf² − vi², so a = (vf² − vi²)/2d (4.16). Newton's second law says F = ma, i.e. a = F/m (4.17). Put the two expressions for a together and multiply through by d, and out comes Fd = ½mvf² − ½mvi² (4.18).

That is the theorem, and the book states it in one clean sentence: the change in kinetic energy of an object is equal to the work done on it by a net force, i.e. W = change in K.E. = (K.E.)f − (K.E.)i = ½mvf² − ½mvi². It is also called the work–energy principle. It holds for any direction of force relative to displacement, and it stays valid even if the force varies from point to point. If the work is positive, kinetic energy grows; if a body itself does work on something else, its work counts as negative and its kinetic energy falls.

Example 4.4 (book): a rider (60 kg) on a motorcycle (30 kg) coasts down a 24° slope; speed at the top is 3.2 m s⁻¹, kinetic friction is 100 N, distance 72 m downhill. Total mass m = 90 kg. The net force down the slope is F = mg sin 24° − f = (90 × 9.8 × 0.4) − 100 = 252.8 N (the book uses sin 24° ≈ 0.4 in its working). Work done W = Fd = 252.8 × 72 = 18201.6 J. By the theorem, ½ × 90 × vf² = 18201.6 + ½ × 90 × (3.2)², giving vf² = 414.7 m² s⁻² and vf = 20.4 m s⁻¹ at the bottom.

📌 Tidbit (book): all the food you eat in one day has about the same energy as 1/3 litre of petrol — your body, like an engine, runs on a surprisingly small fuel budget.

Drop a ball and watch what happens to its two energies. At the top (position A), at rest at height h, it has P.E. = mgh and K.E. = 0. Let it fall a distance x to position B, ignoring air friction. Its height is now (h − x), so P.E. = mg(h − x). Its speed comes from v² = 2gx (starting from rest), so K.E. = ½m(2gx) = mgx. Add them: total energy at B = mg(h − x) + mgx = mgh (4.19) — exactly what it started with. Just before it hits the ground (position C), P.E. = 0 and K.E. = ½mv² = mgh, since v² = 2gh. Nothing was created or lost; one form quietly turned into the other all the way down.

The general statement is the one to memorise: Loss in P.E. = Gain in K.E., written as mg(h₁ − h₂) = ½m(v₂² − v₁²) (4.20), where v₁, v₂ are the speeds at heights h₁, h₂. But the book is careful to add the condition: this is true only when frictional force is not considered. Real falls have air resistance, and the book's resistive-medium version — the one the learning outcomes and a comprehensive question both ask for — is: if a frictional force f acts during the fall, part of the P.E. is used doing work against friction, fh, so the remaining P.E. = mgh − fh is converted into K.E. Hence mgh − fh = ½mv², or mgh = ½mv² + fh (4.21). In words: Loss in P.E. = Gain in K.E. + Work done against friction, and conversely, Loss of K.E. = Gain in P.E. + Work done against friction.

Example 4.5 (book): a car weighing 1100 kg moves at 12 m s⁻¹; at point P its engine stops, friction is 120 N, and it climbs a slope 24 m long rising 1.5 m to Q. Loss of K.E. = Gain in P.E. + Work against friction gives ½ × 1100 × (144 − vQ²) = (1100 × 9.8 × 1.5) + (120 × 24) = 19050, so vQ² = 109.4 and vQ = 10.5 m s⁻¹. Then, from Q to rest at R: ½ × 1100 × 109.4 = 120 × S, so S = 60170 / 120 ≈ 501 m. ⚠️ Book misprint flagged: the book prints this stopping distance as "50.1 m", but its own numbers give 60170 ÷ 120 = 501.4 m — a factor-of-ten slip in the printed answer. The working above follows the book's numbers, not its printed result.

Example 4.6 (book): an object of mass 3 kg falls from 15 m and strikes the ground at 16 m s⁻¹. Loss of P.E. = Gain in K.E. + Work against friction gives 3 × 9.8 × 15 = ½ × 3 × 16² + f × 15, i.e. 441 = 384 + 15f, so f = 57 / 15 = 3.8 N average air friction.

Falling body: P.E. falls, K.E. rises, total stays mghA (top): P.E. = mgh, K.E. = 0B (middle): P.E. + K.E. = mghC (ground): P.E. = 0, K.E. = mghBlue = potential energy, red = kinetic energy — the total bar never changes height

Multiple Choice Questions — Tick (✓) the correct answer

4.1. A 1 kg mass has potential energy of 1 joule relative to the ground when it is at a height of:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) 0.102 m — P.E. = mgh, so h = 1 / (1 × 9.8) = 0.102 m. One joule is a small amount of energy, so it only lifts a kilogram about ten centimetres.

4.2. An iron sphere whose mass is 30 kg has the same diameter as an aluminium sphere whose mass is 10.5 kg. The spheres are simultaneously dropped from a cliff. When they are 10 m from the ground, they have identical:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) accelerations — both fall with acceleration g, whatever their mass, so at the same height they have the same speed and the same acceleration. Momentum (mv), potential energy (mgh) and kinetic energy (½mv²) all contain mass, so the heavier iron sphere has larger values of all three.

4.3. A body at rest may have:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) energy — a body at rest has no speed, velocity or momentum, but it can still hold potential energy: a stone sitting on a roof is at rest and still has mgh waiting to be released.

4.4. The height above the ground of a child on a swing varies from 0.5 m at his lowest point to 1.5 m at his highest point. The maximum speed of the child is approximately:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 4.4 m s⁻¹ — the height difference is 1.5 − 0.5 = 1.0 m, so loss in P.E. = gain in K.E. gives mg(1.0) = ½mv², and v = √(2 × 9.8 × 1.0) = √19.6 ≈ 4.4 m s⁻¹. Mass cancels, which is why (d) is wrong.

4.5. When a ball is thrown vertically upward and then falls back to the ground, which force can be considered conservative in this scenario?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) Gravity — gravity's work over the up-and-down round trip is zero (−mgh up, +mgh down), the definition of a conservative force. Air resistance and friction are path-dependent and dissipate energy as heat.

4.6. According to work-energy principle in linear motion, the work done on body is equal to:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) change in K.E. — that is the work–energy theorem itself: W = (K.E.)f − (K.E.)i. Change in P.E. alone would be the answer only for work against gravity, not for net work in general.

4.7. Power of a lamp is 6 W. How much energy does a lamp give out in 2 min?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) 720 J — energy = power × time = 6 W × 120 s = 720 J. The trap is (a): 6 × 2 = 12 only works if time is in seconds, and 2 minutes is 120 seconds.

4.8. A dry battery can deliver 3000 J of energy to a 2 W small electric motor before the battery is exhausted. For how many minutes does the battery run?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) 25 min — time = energy / power = 3000 / 2 = 1500 s, and 1500 ÷ 60 = 25 min. Option (a) is the trap: 1500 is seconds, not minutes.

4.9. The kinetic energy acquired by a mass m after travelling a fixed distance from rest under the action of a constant force is directly proportional to:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) independent of m — by the work–energy theorem, K.E. gained = work done = F × distance, and neither F nor the distance contains m. A heavy body gains the same kinetic energy as a light one over the same distance (it just ends up slower).

4.10. A body moves a distance of 10 m along a straight line under the action of 5 N force. If the work done is 25 J, the angle which the force makes with the direction of motion of the body is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) 60° — W = Fd cos θ gives 25 = 5 × 10 × cos θ, so cos θ = 25/50 = 0.5, and θ = 60°.

Short Answer Questions

4.1. Why is electrical power required at all when the elevator is descending? Why should be there a limit on the number of passengers in this case?

⚠️ Derived answer: the book has no dedicated passage on elevators, so this applies the chapter's power and work ideas to the situation. An elevator does not fall freely when it descends — its motor and brakes must hold it back and lower it at a controlled, steady speed. Holding a heavy cabin against gravity, overcoming friction in the guides and machinery, and running the braking and control system all take power, even though gravity is "helping" the descent. If the cabin is overloaded, the weight — and therefore the force the motor and brakes must control — grows beyond what they are rated for: the descent can speed up dangerously, the brakes can overheat or fail to hold, and the power needed to control the motion rises. That is why a passenger limit is a safety limit, not just a comfort rule: it keeps the load within the motor's and brakes' design rating.

4.2. A body is being raised to a height H from surface of the Earth. What is the sign of work done by both (body and the Earth)? Justify.

Two works are involved, with opposite signs. The work done by the Earth (by gravity) is negative: gravity pulls down while the body moves up, so the angle between force and displacement is 180° and W = mgH cos 180° = −mgH. The work done by the lifting agent (the force raising the body) is positive: it acts upward, in the direction of motion, so W = +mgH for a slow, steady lift. They cancel, which is why the body's kinetic energy does not change during a steady lift — all the positive work goes into increasing its potential energy by mgH.

4.3. A body falls towards the Earth in air. Will its total mechanical energy be conserved during fall? Justify.

No. Total mechanical energy (K.E. + P.E.) is conserved only when the only forces doing work are conservative. In air, air resistance — a non-conservative force — does negative work on the falling body all the way down, converting part of the mechanical energy into heat in the air and the body. So loss in P.E. = gain in K.E. + work done against air friction (section 4.8), and the mechanical energy at the bottom is less than at the top by exactly that friction work. Total energy is still conserved — it is just no longer all mechanical.

4.4. Calculate power of a crane in kilowatt which lifts a mass of 1000 kg to a height of 100 m in 20 second.

Work done against gravity = mgh = 1000 × 9.8 × 100 = 980,000 J. Power = work / time = 980,000 / 20 = 49,000 W = 49 kW.

4.5. A trolley of mass 1500 kg carrying sand bags of 500 kg is moving uniformly with a speed of 40 km h⁻¹ on a frictionless track. After some time, sand starts leaking out of whole sand bags on the road at a rate of 0.05 kg s⁻¹. What is the speed of the trolley after entire sand bags are empty?

Still 40 km h⁻¹. On a frictionless track there is no horizontal external force on the trolley, so there is nothing to speed it up or slow it down. The leaking sand leaves with the same forward velocity the trolley already has — it carries its share of momentum away with it, but it pushes nothing backwards on the trolley, so the remaining trolley keeps its velocity. Losing mass by itself does not change velocity; only a net force could do that, and here there is none.

4.6. Give absolute and gravitational units of work in M.K.S and C.G.S systems.

Absolute units are the units from force × distance directly: in M.K.S (SI) the joule (1 J = 1 N × 1 m), and in C.G.S the erg (1 erg = 1 dyne × 1 cm), with 1 J = 10⁷ erg. Gravitational units measure work against gravity in weight units: in M.K.S the kilogram-metre (kgf·m) — the work done lifting 1 kgf through 1 m, equal to 9.8 J; in C.G.S the gram-centimetre (gf·cm) — lifting 1 gf through 1 cm, equal to 980 erg. The word "gravitational" just means the force unit is a weight (kilogram-force or gram-force) instead of an absolute force unit.

4.7. A body dropped from a height of H reaches the ground with a speed of 1.2 √(gH). Calculate work done by air friction.

Without air friction the speed at the ground would be √(2gH) and the kinetic energy mgH. Actually the body arrives with speed 1.2√(gH), so its kinetic energy is ½m(1.2√(gH))² = ½m × 1.44gH = 0.72mgH. The missing 1.00mgH − 0.72mgH = 0.28mgH is the energy spent against air friction, so the work done by air friction is −0.28 mgH (negative because friction opposes the motion; its magnitude is 0.28mgH).

4.8. A bicycle has a K.E. of 150 J. What K.E. would the bicycle have if it had: (i) same mass but has speed double? (ii) three times mass and was moving with one half of the speed?

(i) Kinetic energy depends on speed squared, so doubling the speed multiplies K.E. by 2² = 4: 4 × 150 = 600 J. (ii) Tripling the mass multiplies K.E. by 3, and halving the speed multiplies it by (½)² = ¼, so the combined factor is 3 × ¼ = ¾: ¾ × 150 = 112.5 J. (i)

4.9. What will be the effect on K.E. of the body having mass m, moving with velocity v when its momentum becomes double? Justify.

Kinetic energy becomes four times. Momentum p = mv, and K.E. can be written as p²/2m. If momentum doubles (with the same mass, velocity doubles too), the new K.E. is (2p)²/2m = 4p²/2m = 4 times the old K.E. The same result follows from ½m(2v)² = 4 × ½mv².

4.10. Does the international space station have gravitational P.E. or kinetic energy or both? Explain.

⚠️ Derived answer: the book does not discuss the space station, so this applies the chapter's energy ideas to it. Both. The station orbits a few hundred kilometres above Earth, still deep inside Earth's gravitational field, so it has gravitational potential energy — negative, U = −GMm/r, but higher (less negative) than on the surface because it is farther from Earth's centre. And it races around Earth at roughly 7.7 km s⁻¹, so it has an enormous kinetic energy, ½mv², which is exactly what keeps it in orbit instead of falling straight down. In fact its orbit is a balance of the two: the kinetic energy is about half the magnitude of its potential energy, the usual situation for a circular orbit.

Constructed Response Questions

4.1. When will you say that a force is conservative? Give two conditions.

A force is conservative when it satisfies either of these two (equivalent) conditions: (1) the work done by the force in moving an object between two points is independent of the path followed — straight, curved or roundabout, the answer is the same; (2) the work done by the force over any closed path (out and back to the start) is zero. Gravity passes both tests; friction fails both.

4.2. A light and a heavy body have same linear momentum, which one has greater K.E.?

The lighter body. Kinetic energy in terms of momentum is K.E. = p²/2m, so for the same momentum p, kinetic energy is inversely proportional to mass — the smaller the mass, the larger the kinetic energy. Intuitively, the same momentum in a light body means a much higher velocity, and velocity is squared in kinetic energy.

4.3. A motorcycle is running with constant speed on a horizontal track. Is any work being done on the motorcycle, if no net force is acting on it?

Net work is zero, but that does not mean nothing is working. With no net force, the work–energy theorem gives Wnet = change in K.E. = 0, since the speed is constant. Individually, the engine does positive work pushing the motorcycle forward, while friction and air resistance do an equal amount of negative work holding it back — the two cancel exactly. So: work is being done by individual forces, but the net work on the motorcycle is zero.

4.4. A force acts on the ball moving with 14 m s⁻¹ speed and brings its speed to 6 m s⁻¹. Has the force done positive or negative work? Explain your answer.

Negative work. The ball's kinetic energy falls from ½m(14)² to ½m(6)², so the change in K.E. is negative. By the work–energy theorem, work done = change in K.E., so the work is negative — the force must have acted opposite to the motion, like a braking force, taking energy out of the ball rather than putting it in.

4.5. A slow moving truck can have more kinetic energy than a fast moving car. How is this possible?

Because kinetic energy is ½mv² — it depends on mass and speed, and a huge mass can outweigh a modest speed advantage. A truck may be several times heavier than a car; even if its speed is lower, the mass factor can dominate the squared-speed factor. For example, a truck 10 times heavier than a car moving at half the car's speed still has 10 × (½)² = 2.5 times the car's kinetic energy. Speed matters more per unit, but mass is not a bystander.

4.6. Why work done against friction is non-conservative in nature? Explain briefly.

Work against friction is non-conservative because it depends on the path: friction does work equal to the frictional force times the length of the path travelled, so a longer route means more work, and a round trip does not cancel — friction opposes motion on the return leg too, so it keeps doing negative work instead of undoing the outward work. Energy spent against friction is dissipated as heat and cannot be recovered by retracing the path, which is the opposite of a conservative force like gravity.

4.7. Does wind contain kinetic energy? Explain.

Yes. Wind is air in motion, and any moving mass has kinetic energy ½mv². A parcel of moving air of mass m moving with the wind speed v carries exactly that much kinetic energy — which is why wind can do work: it pushes sails, turns wind-turbine blades, and knocks things over in a storm. The faster the wind or the denser the air, the more kinetic energy each cubic metre carries, and wind turbines exist precisely to convert that kinetic energy into electrical energy.

Comprehensive Questions (Long Questions)

4.1. Define K.E. and derive an expression for the same.

Definition: kinetic energy is the energy possessed by a body due to its motion — it is the work the body can do by virtue of moving before it comes to rest. Derivation (book, section 4.5): consider a car of mass m moving with speed v. Its engine is switched off and it is stopped by friction f over a distance d. The work done by the car against friction is fd, and that work is its kinetic energy. By Newton's second law the retarding force is f = ma, where a is the (negative) acceleration. The third equation of motion, 2aS = vf² − vi², with S = d, vi = v and vf = 0, gives 2(−f/m)d = 0 − v², i.e. fd = ½mv². Hence K.E. = ½mv², with unit joule.

4.2. How is work done by a: (i) constant force? (ii) variable force?

(i) Constant force: if a constant force F displaces a body through d in the direction of the force, W = Fd. If the force makes an angle θ with the displacement, only the component along the displacement works, so W = Fd cos θ, or in vector form W = F · d. Work is a scalar, its unit is the joule, and its sign follows θ: positive for θ < 90°, zero at 90°, negative beyond 90°. A force–displacement graph for a constant force is a horizontal line, and the work is the rectangular area under it, F × d. (ii) Variable force: no single F exists, so the path from P to Q is divided into n small intervals Δdᵢ with nearly constant forces Fᵢ. The work in one interval is Fᵢ cos θᵢ Δdᵢ, and the total is the sum W = Σ Fᵢ cos θᵢ Δdᵢ. As the intervals shrink to zero the sum becomes exact, and on a graph it is the area under the F cos θ versus d curve between P and Q — for example, a rectangle plus a triangle giving 20 J + 5 J = 25 J in Example 4.1.

4.3. Define conservative field. Show that gravitational field is conservative in nature.

Definition: a conservative field is a field in which the force is conservative — the work done by the field force in moving a body between two points is independent of the path, and the work over any closed path is zero. The gravitational field is the region around the Earth in which its gravitational force acts on a body. Proof (book, section 4.3): move a mass m from A (ground) to B (height h) along three different paths. Path 1 (horizontal, then vertical): work along the horizontal part is zero since weight is perpendicular to it, and along the vertical part it is −mgh, total −mgh. Path 2 (vertical, then horizontal): −mgh + 0 = −mgh. Path 3 (smooth curve): break it into tiny horizontal and vertical steps; the horizontal steps contribute nothing, the vertical steps sum to the total height h, and the total is again −mgh. All paths agree, and a round trip (up then down) gives −mgh + mgh = 0. Therefore the work done by gravity is path-independent, so the gravitational field is conservative.

4.4. What is meant by absolute P.E.? Derive an expression for absolute P.E.

Meaning: the absolute gravitational potential energy of an object at a certain position is the work done by the gravitational force in displacing the object from that position to infinity, where the force of gravity becomes zero. The zero of potential energy is thus fixed at infinity, which is why absolute potential energies come out negative. Derivation (book, section 4.5): divide the distance from point 1 (distance r₁ from Earth's centre) to point N into small steps of length Δr. For one step, from r₁ to r₂, the middle distance is r = (r₁ + r₂)/2 = r₁ + Δr/2, and the force there is F = GMm/r². Squaring and dropping the tiny (Δr/2)² term gives r² = r₁r₂, so F = GMm/(r₁r₂) and the work for the step is W = FΔr cos 180° = −GMm(Δr)/(r₁r₂) = −GMm(1/r₁ − 1/r₂). Adding all steps, the intermediate terms cancel, leaving total work W = −GMm(1/r₁ − 1/rN). With rN = ∞, the second term vanishes, and the total work — the absolute potential energy at r₁ — is U = −GMm/r. On Earth's surface (r = R) this is U₀ = −GMm/R.

4.5. State and explain work-energy theorem in a resistive medium.

Statement: the change in kinetic energy of an object equals the work done on it by the net force; in a resistive medium, part of the energy is spent doing work against the resistive (frictional) force, so the theorem takes the form: loss in P.E. = gain in K.E. + work done against friction, and conversely loss of K.E. = gain in P.E. + work done against friction. Explanation: for a body falling through height h against a frictional force f, the work-energy balance is mgh = ½mv² + fh, i.e. mgh − fh = ½mv² (4.21): the potential energy lost is split between the kinetic energy gained and the work fh spent against friction. For a body climbing or sliding to rest, the same split applies with the signs reversed — e.g. a car coasting uphill loses kinetic energy partly to gaining potential energy and partly to friction work, ½m(vi² − vf²) = mgh + fd. The theorem remains valid because friction is simply included as one more force doing work; what changes is only that total mechanical energy is no longer constant, since the friction share leaves as heat.

4.6. Define escape velocity. Show that an expression for escape velocity can be expressed as √(2gR), where R and g denote radius of the Earth and acceleration due to gravity, respectively. Also find its numerical value near the surface of the Earth.

Definition: the initial velocity of an object with which it goes out of the Earth's gravitational field is known as escape velocity. Derivation: to escape, the body's initial kinetic energy must cover the whole increase in potential energy from the surface to infinity. At the surface the absolute potential energy is −GMm/R and at infinity it is zero, so the increase in P.E. is 0 − (−GMm/R) = GMm/R. Equating, ½mvesc² = GMm/R. The mass m cancels, giving vesc = √(2GM/R). Now g = GM/R², so GM = gR², and substituting gives vesc = √(2gR). Numerical value: with g = 9.8 m s⁻² and R = 6.4 × 10⁶ m, vesc = √(2 × 9.8 × 6.4 × 10⁶) = √(1.254 × 10⁸) ≈ 11.2 × 10³ m s⁻¹ = 11.2 km s⁻¹ (the book's text rounds this to approximately 11 km s⁻¹).

Numerical Problems

4.1. A machine gun fires 6 bullets per minute with a velocity of 700 m s⁻¹. If each bullet has a mass of 40 g, then find power developed by the gun? (Book answer: 980 W)

Step 1 — kinetic energy of one bullet: ½mv² = ½ × 0.040 kg × (700)² = 0.020 × 490,000 = 9,800 J. Step 2 — energy per minute for 6 bullets: 6 × 9,800 = 58,800 J per minute. Step 3 — power = energy / time = 58,800 / 60 = 980 W. ✓ Matches the book.

4.2. A family uses 10 kW of power. Direct solar energy is incident on horizontal surface at an average rate of 300 W per square metre. If 75% of this energy can be converted into useful electrical energy, how large area is needed to supply 10 kW? (Book answer: 44.44 m²)

Step 1 — useful power per square metre: 75% of 300 = 0.75 × 300 = 225 W m⁻². Step 2 — area needed = total power ÷ power per square metre = 10,000 ÷ 225 = 44.44 m². ✓ Matches the book.

4.3. The mass of the Earth is 6.0 × 10²⁴ kg and mass of the Sun is 1.99 × 10³⁰ kg. The Sun is 160 million km away from the Earth. Find the value of gravitational P.E. of the Earth. (Book answer: −4.97 × 10³³ J)

Step 1 — convert distance: 160 million km = 1.6 × 10¹¹ m. Step 2 — absolute gravitational P.E., U = −GMm/r = −(6.67 × 10⁻¹¹ × 6.0 × 10²⁴ × 1.99 × 10³⁰) / (1.6 × 10¹¹). Step 3 — numerator: 6.67 × 6.0 × 1.99 ≈ 79.6, so 79.6 × 10⁴³ = 7.96 × 10⁴⁴; dividing by 1.6 × 10¹¹ gives 4.97 × 10³³. Hence U = −4.97 × 10³³ J. ✓ Matches the book. The negative sign is correct: Earth is bound in the Sun's field.

4.4. An object weighing 98 N is dropped from a height of 10 m. Its speed just before hitting the ground is 12 m s⁻¹. What is the frictional force acting on it? (Book answer: 26 N)

Step 1 — mass: m = w/g = 98 / 9.8 = 10 kg. Step 2 — potential energy lost: mgh = 98 × 10 = 980 J. Step 3 — kinetic energy gained: ½mv² = ½ × 10 × 12² = 720 J. Step 4 — work against friction: 980 − 720 = 260 J, and work = f × h, so f = 260 / 10 = 26 N. ✓ Matches the book.

4.5. A 75 watt fan is used for 8 hours daily for 30 days. Find: (i) energy consumed in electrical units (ii) electricity bill if one unit costs Rs. 22.5? (Book answer: (i) 18 units (ii) Rs. 405)

Step 1 — total hours: 8 × 30 = 240 hours. Step 2 — energy: 75 W × 240 h = 18,000 Wh = 18 kWh = 18 units (one unit = 1 kWh). Step 3 — bill: 18 × 22.5 = Rs. 405. ✓ Matches the book.

4.6. If an object of mass 2 kg thrown up from ground reaches a height of 5 m and falls back to the Earth (neglecting air resistance), calculate: (i) work done by gravity when the object reaches at 5 m height. (ii) work done by gravity when the object comes back to the Earth. (iii) total work done by gravity in upward and downward motion. Also mention physical significance of the result. (Book answer: (i) −98 J (ii) +98 J (iii) 0 J)

Step 1 — weight: mg = 2 × 9.8 = 19.6 N. (i) Upward: gravity acts downward while displacement is upward (180°), so W = mgh cos 180° = −19.6 × 5 = −98 J. (ii) Downward: gravity and displacement are in the same direction (0°), so W = +19.6 × 5 = +98 J. (iii) Total: −98 + 98 = 0 J. Physical significance: the round trip is a closed path, and gravity's work over it is zero — the textbook signature of a conservative force. The energy was only parked as potential energy on the way up and handed back on the way down. ✓ Matches the book.

4.7. An electrical motor of one horse power is used to run a water pump. Water pump takes 15 minutes to fill a tank of 400 litres at a height of 10 m (1 hp 746 watts). Find: (a) actual input work done by electric motor to fill the tank (b) actual output work done (Book answer: (a) 671.4 kJ, (b) 39.2 kJ)

(a) Input work = power × time: 1 hp = 746 W, time = 15 min = 900 s, so input = 746 × 900 = 671,400 J = 671.4 kJ. (b) Output work = useful work lifting the water: 400 litres of water = 400 kg, so mgh = 400 × 9.8 × 10 = 39,200 J = 39.2 kJ. ✓ Matches the book. (The large gap between input and output is the pump system's inefficiency — most of the motor's energy does not end up as lifted water.)

4.8. A passenger just arrives at the airport and dragging his suitcase to luggage checks in at the desk. He pulls strap with a force of 200 N at an angle of 45° to the floor to displace it 50 m. Determine the value of work done by him on the suitcase. (Book answer: 7 kJ)

Only the component along the floor works: W = Fd cos θ = 200 × 50 × cos 45° = 10,000 × 0.707 = 7,071 J ≈ 7 kJ. ✓ Matches the book (rounded). W = Fd cos θ = 200 × 50 × cos 45° = 7,071

4.9. A 1200 kg car is running at a speed of 40 km h⁻¹. How much power will be expended by it to accelerate at 2 m s⁻²? (Book answer: 26.67 kW)

Step 1 — convert speed: 40 km h⁻¹ = 40 × 1000 / 3600 = 11.11 m s⁻¹. Step 2 — force needed: F = ma = 1200 × 2 = 2400 N. Step 3 — power: P = Fv = 2400 × 11.11 = 26,667 W ≈ 26.67 kW. ✓ Matches the book.

4.10. A 200 g apple is lifted to 10 m and then dropped. What is its velocity when it hits the ground? Assume that 75% of work done in lifting the apple is transferred to K.E. by the time it hits the ground. (Book answer: 12.1 m s⁻¹)

Step 1 — work done lifting: mgh = 0.200 × 9.8 × 10 = 19.6 J. Step 2 — kinetic energy at impact: 75% of 19.6 = 14.7 J. Step 3 — velocity: ½mv² = 14.7 gives v² = 2 × 14.7 / 0.200 = 147, so v = √147 ≈ 12.1 m s⁻¹. ✓ Matches the book. (Without the 25% loss, the speed would have been √(2 × 9.8 × 10) = 14 m s⁻¹.)

This chapter is one connected argument, and it is worth seeing whole before you revise the pieces. Work is force times displacement along the motion (W = Fd cos θ), and for a changing force it is the area under the force–displacement graph. Some forces, like gravity, do path-independent work and are conservative; others, like friction, eat energy along every metre of path and are non-conservative. Power is how fast the work gets done (P = W/t = F·v). Energy is the capacity to do work: kinetic energy ½mv² from motion, potential energy mgh near the ground and −GMm/r in general, and the two swap into each other as a body falls — unless friction takes its share. Escape velocity, √(2gR) ≈ 11.2 km s⁻¹, is just the energy bill for leaving Earth altogether, and the work–energy theorem, W = change in K.E., ties the whole chapter together in one equation.

Topics covered, with links:

Revision guidance: first, write the five formulas from memory — W = Fd cos θ, K.E. = ½mv², P.E. = mgh, U = −GMm/r, vesc = √(2gR) — and the theorem W = ΔK.E. Then practise the two graph questions (constant-force rectangle, variable-force area) and the two sign questions (work by gravity up vs down, work by friction always negative). Finally, redo the numericals that mix two ideas — the crane power, the fan units, and the falling body with friction — because those are the ones that appear, slightly changed, in board papers.
