ENGLISH

Before any formula, the book asks you to picture what a gas actually is. Forget the smooth, continuous stuff that comes out of a cylinder. In the kinetic theory, a gas is a crowd — an enormous number of tiny particles, all rushing about, bumping into each other and into the walls of whatever holds them. Everything the chapter later proves — pressure, temperature, the gas laws — grows out of that one picture.

The book lists eight assumptions, and each one is worth reading slowly, because examiners pick at them one by one:

1. Constant, random motion. Gas molecules never sit still. They move in straight lines until something gets in the way — another molecule, or a wall — and then they bounce off in a new direction.

2. Negligible volume. Next to the whole container, the molecules themselves take up practically no room. For the maths, they are treated as points.

3. No intermolecular forces. Between collisions, molecules neither pull nor push each other. They only interact at the instant of impact.

4. Elastic collisions. When molecules collide, with each other or with the walls, no kinetic energy is lost overall. The total kinetic energy stays conserved.

5. A very large number of particles. There are so many molecules that we can stop tracking individuals and use averages instead — that is what makes statistics possible.

6. Average kinetic energy ∝ temperature. Heat a gas and its molecules move faster on average. This is the bridge between the invisible world and the thermometer reading.

7. Pressure comes from collisions. Pressure is nothing mysterious: it is the push of countless molecules hammering on the walls. More, or harder, hits mean more pressure.

8. Collision time is negligible. Each impact lasts a vanishingly short time compared with the time spent flying free between impacts, which keeps the analysis simple.

Then comes the honest warning. These assumptions describe an ideal gas, and real gases only behave that way when their molecules are far apart and moving fast — that is, at low pressure and high temperature. Squeeze a real gas hard, or cool it down, and its molecules start feeling each other and taking up real room, and the ideal picture starts to break down.

ENGLISH

A gas that obeys the kinetic theory is called an ideal gas, and its behaviour is summed up in one short equation, numbered (6.1) in the book:

PV = nRT

Here P is the pressure, V the volume, n the number of moles, T the absolute temperature in kelvin, and R the universal gas constant, R = 8.314 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹. Read it as a promise: for a fixed amount of gas, the product PV grows in direct proportion to the absolute temperature. Double the kelvin temperature, and PV doubles with it.

The book then squeezes two useful results out of this one equation. First, the number of moles from an ordinary weighing: n = m / M, where m is the mass of the gas and M its molar mass. Put that into PV = nRT and you get PV = (m/M) RT. Second, since density ρ = m / V, a little rearrangement gives ρ = PM / RT. Because M/R is constant for a given gas, density is proportional to P/T — ρ ∝ P/T. That is why a gas is thin at low pressure and high temperature: its molecules are spread far apart, intermolecular forces become negligible, and it starts behaving like an ideal gas. This is exactly the condition the previous section ended with, now proved from the equation rather than just stated.

Next the book rewrites the same law molecule by molecule. A mole is Avogadro's number of particles, NA = 6.02 × 10²³, so the number of moles is n = N / NA, where N is the actual number of atoms or molecules. Substitute into PV = nRT:

PV = (N / NA) RT = N kB T, where kB = R / NA

This new constant, the Boltzmann constant, is kB = 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹. It is the gas constant per molecule instead of per mole, and it is the number you reach for whenever a question counts individual molecules rather than moles — Numerical 6.2 does exactly that.

📌 Book note ("For your information"): real gases approach ideal behaviour under (i) low pressure and (ii) high temperature — the same two conditions, repeated in the book's own side box, because examiners ask for them so often.

Worked Example 6.1 from the book: one mole of an ideal gas at 300 K, under 1 atm (101325 Pa). Using V = nNAkBT / P = (1 × 6.02 × 10²³ × 1.38 × 10⁻²³ × 300) / 101325 ≈ 0.0245 m³ — about 24.5 litres, the familiar volume of a mole of gas near room temperature.

PV = nRT

PV = N kB T، جہاں kB = R / NA = 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹

ENGLISH

Pressure, volume and temperature are called state variables: they describe the state of a gas. Change one, and usually a second one changes while the third is held fixed. The three gas laws are simply the three ways of doing that, one variable held still at a time.

Boyle's law (Robert Boyle, 1662). Hold the temperature constant and squeeze a fixed mass of gas: the pressure varies inversely with the volume. P ∝ 1/V at constant T, so PV = constant, or between two states, P₁V₁ = P₂V₂. On a P–V graph this is a curve that falls steeply and then flattens — the book's Fig. 6.1. Halve the volume, and the pressure doubles, because the same molecules now hit the walls twice as often in half the space.

Charles' law (Jacques Charles, 1870 in the book's dating). Hold the pressure constant and warm the gas: the volume grows in direct proportion to the absolute temperature. V ∝ T at constant P, so V/T = constant, or V₁/T₁ = V₂/T₂. The V–T graph is a straight line that, extended backwards, meets the temperature axis at 0 K (−273 °C) — the book's Fig. 6.2. That meeting point is no accident: it is absolute zero showing itself in the graph.

The pressure law (printed in the book as "Joseph Lussac's Law"). Hold the volume constant and warm the gas: the pressure rises in direct proportion to the absolute temperature. P ∝ T at constant V, so P/T = constant, or P₁/T₁ = P₂/T₂. The P–T graph is a straight line at constant volume — the book's Fig. 6.3. Faster molecules hit harder and more often, and with nowhere to expand, that extra hammering shows up as pressure.

One warning that saves marks: every one of these laws uses absolute temperature in kelvin. Put a Celsius temperature into V₁/T₁ and the answer will be wrong. Add 273 first, every time.

PV(P₁, V₁)(P₂, V₂)Boyle's law, constant T: P₁V₁ = P₂V₂

ENGLISH

Two bodies are in thermal equilibrium when they are at the same temperature. That sounds almost too simple to be a definition, but it carries a real consequence: when two bodies share a temperature, their thermal energy — the energy tied up in the motion of their particles — is in balance, so there is no driving force pushing heat from one to the other. Net heat flow stops.

The book's example is one you have lived. Drop a metal spoon into a hot cup of coffee: (i) at first the coffee is hotter than the spoon; (ii) over time, heat flows from the coffee into the spoon; (iii) eventually both reach the same temperature. At that point they are in thermal equilibrium, and no net heat flows between them any more. Notice the word "net" — at the microscopic level molecules still exchange energy, but the flow each way balances out.

This idea quietly underpins thermometers too: a thermometer reads your temperature only because it has been left in contact long enough to reach thermal equilibrium with you. Until then it is still catching up.

Hot coffee80 °C →Spoon20 °C →heat →Finally both at the same temperature → thermal equilibrium, no net heat flow
6.2 — Internal Energy۶.
🏷 Tags: internal energy, kinetic energy, temperature, ideal gas, average kinetic energy
ENGLISH

The internal energy of a substance is the sum of all the forms of energy its particles carry — their kinetic energy of motion and their potential energy of position and interaction. In thermodynamics we usually take an ideal gas as the working substance, and for an ideal gas the molecules are treated as mass points that exert no forces on each other, so the potential-energy part drops away. What is left is essentially the translational kinetic energy of the molecules.

Now, temperature is defined by the average kinetic energy of the molecules. So for an ideal gas, internal energy is directly proportional to temperature. The book gives the average kinetic energy of a gas molecule from the kinetic theory as:

<K.E.> = (3/2) kB T   or   <½mv²> = (3/2) kB T

where kB is the Boltzmann constant. Two consequences follow at once. First, a rise in temperature of a body means a rise in its internal energy — the molecules are moving faster on average, and that is all "hotter" means at the molecular level. Second, that rise can come about in more than one way: by heating (adding heat energy), by adiabatic compression or expansion (no heat exchanged at all), or even by a phase change, where heat energy changes the state of matter without changing the temperature.

📌 Book note ("Do you know?"): a diatomic gas molecule has both translational and rotational energy, and it also has vibrational energy, associated with the spring-like bond between its atoms. So a real diatomic molecule carries more kinds of internal energy than the simple mass-point picture suggests.

📌 Book note ("Tidbit"): different processes can lead to changes in internal energy and temperature, such as heating (adding heat), adiabatic compression or expansion (no heat exchange), or phase changes (where heat energy changes the state of matter without changing temperature).

📌 Book note ("For your information"): internal energy is a function of state. It does not depend on the path taken, only on the initial and final states of the system — just like gravitational potential energy. So it is the change in internal energy, not its absolute value, that matters.

ENGLISH

Heat and work are both ways of transferring energy — they are not things a body "contains". The idea grew out of the steam engine: heat a vessel of water, the steam pushes, and work comes out. So the book fixes a sign convention first, because without one every equation in this chapter becomes a coin toss:

Work done by the system on its environment is positive. Work done on the system by the environment is negative. Heat entering the system is positive; heat leaving it is negative.

Now the derivation that every student should be able to redo. Picture a gas sealed in a cylinder with a moveable, frictionless piston of cross-sectional area A (the book's Fig. 6.4). In equilibrium the gas occupies volume V and pushes on the piston with pressure P, so the force on the piston is F = PA. Let the gas expand very slowly, so it stays in equilibrium, and the piston moves up a small distance Δy. The work done by the gas is:

W = FΔy = PAΔy, and since AΔy = ΔV (the change in volume), W = PΔV   (6.4)

That formula is for constant pressure, but the book immediately generalises it: the work done can also be read off a P–V graph as the area under the curve (Fig. 6.5). For a constant-pressure expansion the area is just a rectangle, P × ΔV. For a changing pressure, the area under the curve between the starting and finishing volumes is still the work — which is why, later in the chapter, the area enclosed by a whole cycle on a P–V diagram turns out to be the net work of that cycle.

A detail students often miss: heat entering a system does not have to show up in only one place. It can appear as a rise in internal energy, as work done by the system, or as both at once. Sorting out that split is exactly what the first law does next.

W = FΔy = PAΔy، اور چونکہ AΔy = ΔV (حجم میں تبدیلی)، اس لیے W = PΔV

ENGLISH

When heat is added to a system, the system's internal energy rises — its temperature goes up, its pressure changes, or its state changes — and at the same time the substance may do work on its surroundings by expanding. So the heat Q supplied must cover both bills: the change in internal energy from U₁ to U₂, plus the work W done on the environment:

Q = (U₂ − U₁) + W, i.e. Q = ΔU + W   (6.5)

Rearranged, ΔU = Q − W. In words, the book states it like this: in any thermodynamic process, when heat Q is added to a system, this energy appears as an increase in the internal energy ΔU stored in the system plus the work W done by the system on its surroundings.

Two things make this law bigger than it looks. First, it is the conservation principle: energy can change its form — chemical potential energy into thermal energy, for example — but in an isolated system the total stays constant. Nothing is created or destroyed. Second, it is universally applicable: it is not just about steam engines, but about chemical reactions, electrical systems and nuclear reactions too.

The book's everyday example is a bicycle pump. Pump the handle rapidly with the outlet blocked, and the pump gets hot. No heat was supplied from outside — the mechanical work of your hand went into the trapped air and raised its internal energy, which you feel as a temperature rise. A thermocouple through the blocked outlet lets you watch that rise on a millivoltmeter (Fig. 6.6). Human metabolism is the same law in a living body: we do work when we walk, run and move, and we need energy for growth and to replace old cells, so the body's internal energy is maintained by the food we eat. Work done by the body draws down internal energy; food tops it back up.

Worked Example 6.2 from the book: a gas in a container with a piston of area 0.10 m², pressure held at 8000 N m⁻², piston pushed up 4.0 cm while 42 J of heat is transferred to the system. Work done by the gas: W = PΔV = PAΔy = 8000 × 0.10 × 4.0 × 10⁻² = 32 J. Change in internal energy: ΔU = Q − W = 42 − 32 = 10 J. Only 10 of the 42 joules stayed inside as internal energy; the other 32 left as work.

Q = (U₂ − U₁) + W، یعنی Q = ΔU + W

Two special processes run through the rest of the chapter, so it is worth getting them exactly right now.

Isothermal process — temperature stays constant. The gas expands or compresses slowly enough that heat has time to flow in or out and hold the temperature steady, so Boyle's law applies throughout: P₁V₁ = P₂V₂. For an ideal gas, internal energy depends only on temperature, and the temperature is not changing, so ΔU = 0. The first law, ΔU = Q − W, then collapses to Q = W. If the gas expands and does external work W, exactly that much heat Q must be supplied to keep the temperature from falling. The curve for this process on a P–V diagram is called an isotherm (Fig. 6.7-a). And note the practical point the book stresses: keeping the temperature constant takes time, because heat transfer takes time — so an isothermal change must be carried out slowly.

📌 Book note ("Brain teaser!"): why does the internal energy of an ideal gas remain constant during isothermal expansion? Because for an ideal gas the molecules have no potential energy between them, so internal energy is purely kinetic, and kinetic energy depends only on temperature — which is not changing. Answer that in one sentence and you have the whole point.

Adiabatic process — no heat enters or leaves. Here ΔQ = 0, and the first law gives W = −ΔU. That minus sign tells the whole story: if the gas expands and does external work, it pays for that work out of its own internal energy, so its temperature falls. Compress it, and the work done on the gas raises its internal energy, so its temperature rises — this is the bicycle pump again. Adiabatic change happens when the gas expands or compresses rapidly, particularly in an insulated cylinder, so heat simply has no time to flow. The book's examples: (i) the rapid escape of air from a burst tyre, (ii) the rapid expansion and compression of air as a sound wave passes through it, (iii) cloud formation in the atmosphere. Because the temperature does not stay constant, the relation is PVγ = constant, where γ = Cp / Cv, the ratio of the molar specific heat at constant pressure to that at constant volume. The curve is called an adiabat (Fig. 6.7-b).

🏷 Tags: reversible, irreversible, cycle, friction, dissipation, slow compression
ENGLISH

A reversible process is one that can be retraced in exactly reverse order, without producing any change in the surroundings. The working substance passes through the same stages in the reverse process, but every thermal and mechanical effect at each stage is exactly reversed: heat absorbed in the forward process is given out in the reverse, and work done by the substance in the forward process is done on the substance in the reverse. At the end, the working substance is restored to its original condition.

A succession of events that brings a system back to its initial condition is called a cycle, and a reversible cycle is one in which all the changes are reversible. No actual change is completely reversible, the book admits frankly — but the slow liquefaction and evaporation of a substance, and the slow compression of a gas in a cylinder (which can be turned into expansion by slowly reducing the pressure on the piston), come practically close.

If a process cannot be retraced in the backward direction by reversing the controlling factors, it is an irreversible process. All changes that happen suddenly, or that involve friction or dissipation of energy through conduction, convection or radiation, are irreversible. The book's example of a highly irreversible process is an explosion — nobody has ever un-exploded anything by reversing the controls.

📌 Book note ("Do you know?"): the first practical steam engine was designed by John Braithwaite and John Ericsson in England around 1829 — a reminder that this whole chapter grew out of real engines, not out of abstract theory.

A heat engine converts some thermal energy into mechanical work. Usually the heat comes from burning a fuel. The earliest heat engine was the steam engine, and the book tells its origin story plainly: it was developed from the fact that when water is boiled in a vessel covered with a lid, the steam inside tries to push the lid off, showing its ability to do work. That observation helped develop a steam engine.

The working principle is a cyclic process: heat energy is transferred cyclically from a high-temperature reservoir to a low-temperature reservoir, with the aim of converting as much heat as possible into mechanical work. The engine (Fig. 6.8 in the book) absorbs a quantity of heat Q₁ from the heat source at temperature T₁, does work W, and expels heat Q₂ to the low-temperature reservoir at temperature T₂. Because the working substance goes through a cycle and returns to its initial state, its change in internal energy over one cycle is zero, so from the first law the net work done equals the net heat absorbed:

W = Q₁ − Q₂

In practice, the book notes, a petrol engine converts roughly 25% of the available heat energy into work, and a diesel engine 35 to 40%. The rest is not "lost" in the sense of vanishing — it leaves as exhaust heat. It is simply not converted, and the next section explains why it can never all be converted.

W = Q₁ − Q₂

The first law tells you that heat energy can be converted into an equivalent amount of work, but it is silent about the conditions under which that conversion takes place. The second law is concerned with exactly that: the circumstances in which heat can be converted into work, and the direction of the flow of heat.

The book states it first in the form based on the working of a heat engine, Lord Kelvin's statement:

It is impossible to devise a process which may convert heat, extracted from a single reservoir, entirely into work without leaving any change in the working system.

Think about what that rules out. A single heat reservoir, no matter how much energy it contains, cannot be made to perform any work on its own. The oceans and the atmosphere contain an enormous amount of heat energy, but it cannot be converted into useful mechanical work — and the reason is simple once you see it: there is no reservoir at a temperature lower than any one of the two for the heat to flow towards. Heat needs a downhill slope, a hot side and a cold side. So for a heat engine to work there must be a source of heat at a high temperature and a sink at a low temperature to which heat may be expelled.

📌 Book note ("Tidbits"): according to the Kelvin statement of the second law, the process pictured in the book's side box — heat from a source at a single temperature converted entirely into work — is impossible.

ENGLISH

In 1824 Sadi Carnot described an ideal engine using only isothermal and adiabatic processes. He showed that a heat engine operating in an ideal reversible cycle between two heat reservoirs at different temperatures would be the most efficient engine possible. A Carnot cycle using an ideal gas as the working substance is drawn on a P–V diagram in the book's Fig. 6.9, and it consists of four steps:

1. AB — isothermal expansion at T₁. The gas expands at the hot reservoir's temperature, absorbing heat Q₁ from the hot reservoir.

2. BC — adiabatic expansion. The gas keeps expanding with no heat exchanged, so its temperature drops to T₂.

3. CD — isothermal compression at T₂. The gas is compressed at the cold reservoir's temperature, rejecting heat Q₂ to the cold reservoir.

4. DA — adiabatic compression. The gas is compressed with no heat exchanged, restoring its initial state at temperature T₁.

Thermal and mechanical equilibrium is maintained all the time, so each step is perfectly reversible, and since the working substance returns to its initial state, ΔU = 0 for the cycle. The net work done during one cycle equals the area enclosed by the path ABCDA on the P–V diagram, and it can also be found from the net heat absorbed: Q = Q₁ − Q₂, so from the first law, W = Q₁ − Q₂.

Efficiency η is defined as output over input:

η = (Q₁ − Q₂) / Q₁   (6.6)

Now the elegant part. The energy transferred in an isothermal expansion or compression turns out to be proportional to the kelvin temperature, so Q₁ and Q₂ are proportional to T₁ and T₂ respectively, and hence:

η = (T₁ − T₂) / T₁ = 1 − T₂ / T₁   (6.7)

As a percentage: percentage efficiency = (1 − T₂/T₁) × 100.

Read that formula carefully, because it carries three lessons. The efficiency of a Carnot engine depends on the temperatures of the hot and cold reservoirs, and is independent of the nature of the working substance. The larger the temperature difference between the two reservoirs, the greater the efficiency. But it can never be one, or 100%, unless the cold reservoir is at absolute zero (T₂ = 0 K) — and such reservoirs are not available, so the maximum efficiency is always less than one. Nevertheless, the Carnot cycle sets an upper limit on the efficiency of all heat engines. No practical engine can be perfectly reversible, and energy dissipation is inevitable. This is stated in Carnot's theorem: no heat engine can be more efficient than a Carnot engine operating between the same two temperatures — extended to: all Carnot engines operating between the same two temperatures have the same efficiency, irrespective of the nature of the working substance. In most practical cases the cold reservoir is near room temperature, so efficiency can only be increased by raising the temperature of the hot reservoir, and all real engines are less efficient than a Carnot engine because of friction and other heat losses.

📌 Book note ("Interesting information"): the book compares a heat engine to a waterfall driving a waterwheel — water (like heat) falls from a height (a high temperature) to a lower level, and the wheel turns only because of the drop. No drop, no work.

Worked Example 6.3 from the book: a steam turbine takes steam from a boiler at 427 °C and exhausts into a low-temperature reservoir at 77 °C. Convert first: T₁ = 427 + 273 = 700 K, T₂ = 77 + 273 = 350 K. Maximum efficiency η = (700 − 350) / 700 = 350/700 = 1/2 = 0.5, so 50%. Even the perfect engine wastes half the heat here.

η = (Q₁ − Q₂) / Q₁

η = (T₁ − T₂) / T₁ = 1 − T₂ / T₁

6.9 — Refrigerator and Coefficient of Performance۶.
🏷 Tags: refrigerator, coefficient of performance, COP, Clausius statement, reverse heat engine
ENGLISH

A refrigerator is a device that maintains the temperature of a body below that of its surroundings. It operates in a cyclic process, but in reverse to that of a heat engine (the book's Fig. 6.10). It absorbs heat from a cold reservoir and gives it off to a hot reservoir. That reversal flips the work around too: in a refrigerator, work is done on the system, while in a heat engine work is done by the system.

A refrigerator works on the basis of the Clausius statement of the second law: a heat engine operating in reverse. Heat Qc is drawn from the low-temperature reservoir (LTR) at T₁ by the compressor and thrown into the high-temperature reservoir (HTR) at T₂ with the help of external work. The heat rejected to the HTR, Qh, is given by:

Qc + W = Qh   or   W = Qh − Qc

The main purpose of a refrigerator is to extract as much heat Qc as possible from the LTR with the expenditure of as little work W as possible. So its quality is measured not by efficiency but by the coefficient of performance: the ratio of the heat removed from the LTR (Qc) to the work done (W):

E = Qc / W = Qc / (Qh − Qc)

Since heat absorbed is proportional to temperature, Q ∝ T, the coefficient of performance in terms of temperature is:

E = T₁ / (T₂ − T₁)   (6.8)

A better refrigerator removes a greater amount of heat from inside for a smaller expenditure of mechanical work or electrical energy. Notice what the formula says about a very cold freezer on a hot day: as T₂ − T₁ grows, E shrinks, and the same cooling costs more work. That is why a fridge works hardest in summer.

Worked Example 6.4 from the book: a refrigerator has a coefficient of performance 8, and the freezer temperature is −23 °C. What is the temperature at which it rejects heat? Cold reservoir: T₁ = −23 + 273 = 250 K. Hot reservoir T₂ is unknown. E = T₁ / (T₂ − T₁), so 8 = 250 / (T₂ − 250), giving 8(T₂ − 250) = 250, so T₂ − 250 = 250/8 = 31.25 K, and T₂ = 281.25 K = 8.25 °C. (The book's printed working rounds the room side to the same value; the arithmetic above is the full step-by-step version.)

Qc + W = Qh   یا   W = Qh − Qc

E = Qc / W = Qc / (Qh − Qc)

E = T₁ / (T₂ − T₁)

Hot surroundings, T₂ — heat out QhRefrigeratorCold inside, T₁ — heat in Qc← Work W inQh = Qc + W   •   COP E = T₁ / (T₂ − T₁)

ENGLISH

The concept of entropy was introduced into thermodynamics by Rudolf Clausius in 1856, to give a quantitative basis for the second law. It provides another variable to describe the state of a system, along with pressure, volume, temperature and internal energy. If a system undergoes a reversible process in which it absorbs a quantity of heat ΔQ at absolute temperature T, then the increase in the state variable called entropy S of the system is given by:

ΔS = ΔQ / T   (6.9)

Like potential energy or internal energy, it is the change in entropy that is important. The change is positive when heat is added and negative when heat is removed. Now watch what happens when heat flows on its own. Suppose an amount of heat Q flows from a reservoir at temperature T₁, through a conducting rod, to a reservoir at temperature T₂, when T₁ > T₂. The entropy of the reservoir at T₁, which loses heat, decreases by Q/T₁, and that of the reservoir at T₂, which gains heat, increases by Q/T₂. Since T₁ > T₂, Q/T₂ is greater than Q/T₁ — so the net change in entropy, (Q/T₂ − Q/T₁), is positive. That is why, in all natural processes where heat flows from one system to another, there is always a net increase in entropy. It is another statement of the second law:

If a system undergoes a natural process, it will go in the direction that causes the entropy of the system plus the environment to increase.

It is observed that a natural process tends to proceed towards a state of greater disorder, and here entropy meets disorder. An irreversible heat flow from a hot to a cold substance increases disorder, because the molecules, initially sorted out in hotter and cooler regions, lose that order when the system comes to thermal equilibrium. Adding heat to a system increases its disorder because the average molecular speeds — and therefore the randomness of molecular motion — increase. Free expansion of a gas increases disorder because the molecules have greater randomness of position after expansion. In both examples, entropy is said to increase. Only those processes are probable for which the entropy of the system increases or remains constant: the process for which entropy remains constant is a reversible process, whereas for all irreversible processes the entropy of the system increases.

Every time entropy increases, the opportunity to convert some heat into work is lost. Mix hot and cold water and you can never un-mix them into a hot layer and a cold layer again; no energy has been lost, but some of it is no longer available for conversion into work. Increase in entropy therefore means degradation of energy — from a higher level, where more work can be extracted, to a lower level, where less or no useful work can be done. The energy, in a sense, is degraded, going from a more orderly form to a less orderly form, eventually ending up as thermal energy. In all real processes where heat transfer occurs, the energy available for doing useful work decreases; even if the temperature of some system decreases, lowering its entropy, that happens at the expense of a net increase in entropy for some other system. When all systems are taken together as the universe, the entropy of the universe always increases.

📌 Book note ("Brain teaser!"): why does a deck of cards become more disordered when shuffled? Because shuffling destroys the sorted arrangement and replaces it with a random one — the same move, from order to disorder, that entropy measures. The ordered deck is one special arrangement; the shuffled deck is one of an enormous number of random ones, and nature drifts towards the many, not the one.

Worked Example 6.5 from the book: the entropy change when 1.0 kg of ice at 0 °C melts into water at 0 °C, with latent heat of fusion Lf = 3.36 × 10⁵ J kg⁻¹. Heat absorbed: ΔQ = mLf = 1.00 × 3.36 × 10⁵ = 3.36 × 10⁵ J, at T = 0 °C = 273 K. So ΔS = ΔQ / T = 3.36 × 10⁵ / 273 = 1.23 × 10³ J K⁻¹. Entropy increases as the ice changes to water — a measure of the increase in disorder of the water molecules as they go from the solid to the liquid state.

ΔS = ΔQ / T

📝 Official Exercise Questions — with Answers📝

The book's exercise (printed pages 128–131) has five parts: Multiple Choice Questions (10), Short Answer Questions (12), Constructed Response Questions (5), Comprehensive Questions (6) and Numerical Problems (8) — 41 questions in all, every one answered below. There is no separate inquisitive or review section in this chapter's exercise, so none is invented here. ⚠️ Three MCQs carry warnings in their answers: 6.6 is worded loosely, 6.7 is printed with an incomplete stem, and 6.8 prints a wrong unit in its correct option — each is keyed to the book's intended answer and the problem is flagged. Numerical 6.2's printed book answer also disagrees with its own working and is flagged there.

Multiple Choice Questions — Tick (✓) the correct answer

6.1. In an isothermal change, internal energy:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) remains the same — isothermal means the temperature does not change, and for an ideal gas internal energy depends only on temperature, so ΔU = 0. It does not become zero — the energy is still there, it simply does not change.

6.2. First law of thermodynamics is based upon law of conservation of:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) energy — Q = ΔU + W is an account book: heat in must equal the rise in internal energy plus the work out. Energy changes form but is never created or destroyed.

6.3. A device which converts thermal energy into mechanical energy is called:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) heat engine — a heat engine is the general name for the device; a Carnot engine is one ideal kind of heat engine, a refrigerator does the reverse job, and a turbine is only one part that such an engine may use.

6.4. When two objects are made in thermal contact having same temperature, then they are at:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) thermal equilibrium — same temperature means no net heat flows between them, which is exactly the definition of thermal equilibrium.

6.5. When the system is expanded by adding heat energy, then the work done will be:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) positive and by the system — in the book's sign convention, work done by the system is positive. Adding heat makes the gas expand and push the piston out, so the system itself does the work.

6.6. Entropy of a system in reversible process:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) is zero — ⚠️ Warning — loosely worded question: the book's own text (section 6.10) says the process for which entropy remains constant is a reversible process, i.e. the change in entropy is zero. Read option (d) as "the change in entropy is zero" — the entropy itself is certainly not zero. Keyed to the book's intended answer.

6.7. What happens to internal energy of an object when its temperature [increases]:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) increases — ⚠️ Warning — incomplete stem as printed: the question as printed in the book ends at "when its temperature:" with the final word missing. The intended reading is clearly "when its temperature increases", since internal energy is directly proportional to temperature: hotter molecules move faster, so internal energy rises.

6.8. The value of Boltzmann constant is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹ — ⚠️ Warning — misprinted unit in the book: option (d) as printed shows the unit as J⁻¹ K⁻¹, which is wrong; the value 1.38 × 10⁻²³ is the right value and the correct unit is J K⁻¹ (kB = R / NA = 8.314 / 6.02 × 10²³). Keyed to the book's intended answer, with the unit corrected.

6.9. In an adiabatic process, there is no:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) exchange of heat — adiabatic means ΔQ = 0 by definition. Temperature certainly changes (that is the point of W = −ΔU), and work is done — it is only the heat flow that is shut off.

6.10. Thermodynamics mostly deals with:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) conversion of heat to other forms of energy — the chapter opens by defining thermodynamics as the study of the relationships and conversions between heat and other forms of energy. Measuring heat or describing a change of state are parts of it, but conversion is the heart.

Short Answer Questions

6.1. What is meant by thermal equilibrium? Explain briefly.

Two bodies are in thermal equilibrium when they are at the same temperature, so there is no net flow of heat between them. Example: a metal spoon dropped into hot coffee is at first colder than the coffee, heat flows from the coffee into the spoon, and eventually both reach the same temperature — at that point they are in thermal equilibrium and no net heat flows any more.

6.2. What is meant by internal energy? How is it related to temperature of an ideal gas?

Internal energy is the sum of all the energies of a substance's particles — their kinetic energy and their potential energy. For an ideal gas the molecules exert no forces on each other, so the potential part vanishes and internal energy is essentially the translational kinetic energy of the molecules. Since temperature is defined by the average kinetic energy, <K.E.> = (3/2) kB T, the internal energy of an ideal gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature: heat it and its internal energy rises, cool it and it falls.

6.3. State 2nd law of thermodynamics in two different forms.

(i) Kelvin's statement (heat-engine form): it is impossible to devise a process which may convert heat, extracted from a single reservoir, entirely into work without leaving any change in the working system. (ii) Entropy form (from section 6.10): if a system undergoes a natural process, it will go in the direction that causes the entropy of the system plus the environment to increase — in all natural processes there is a net increase in entropy. The refrigerator version (Clausius statement) is the same law seen from the other side: heat does not flow by itself from a cold body to a hot one; a refrigerator must be driven by external work to do it.

6.4. Is it possible to construct a heat engine of 100% efficiency? Explain.

No. For a Carnot engine, η = 1 − T₂/T₁. For η to be 1 (100%), T₂/T₁ would have to be zero, which needs the cold reservoir at absolute zero, T₂ = 0 K — and such a reservoir is not available. Every real engine is even worse, because friction and other heat losses make it less efficient than a Carnot engine working between the same two temperatures. So 100% efficiency is forbidden by the second law, not just by bad engineering.

6.5. Differentiate between reversible and irreversible processes.

A reversible process can be retraced in exactly reverse order with no change left in the surroundings: heat absorbed going forward is given out coming back, and work done by the substance going forward is done on it coming back, and it must be carried out slowly with no friction. An irreversible process cannot be retraced by reversing the controlling factors: it happens suddenly or involves friction and dissipation of energy by conduction, convection or radiation. Example of nearly reversible: slow evaporation or slow compression of a gas. Example of highly irreversible: an explosion.

6.6. Why adiabat is steeper than isotherm? Explain.

On a P–V diagram, along an isotherm the temperature is held constant, so when the volume increases the pressure falls for one reason only: the same molecules are spread over more space. Along an adiabat there is no heat exchange, so when the volume increases the gas also cools down, because the work of expansion is paid for out of its internal energy (W = −ΔU). Pressure therefore falls for two reasons at once — larger volume and lower temperature — so the adiabat drops more steeply than the isotherm. Mathematically, the isotherm obeys PV = constant while the adiabat obeys PVγ = constant with γ > 1, which is the steeper curve.

6.7. A refrigerator transforms heat from cold to hot body. Does this violate the second law of thermodynamics? Justify your answer.

No, it does not violate the second law. Heat flowing by itself from cold to hot would violate it — that is the Clausius idea. But a refrigerator does not let heat flow by itself: external work W is supplied (by the compressor, using electricity), and the heat rejected to the hot reservoir is larger than the heat taken from the cold one, Qh = Qc + W. When the whole picture — cold inside, hot surroundings, and the power station supplying the work — is added up, the total entropy of system plus environment still increases. The second law is about the total, not about one conveniently chosen part.

6.8. Explain briefly heat death of universe in terms of entropy.

In every natural process the total entropy increases, and every rise in entropy means some energy is degraded — moved from a form where it can do useful work to a form (ultimately thermal energy spread evenly) where it cannot. Run that forward for the whole universe: heat keeps flowing from hot to cold, disorder keeps growing, and the energy available for doing useful work keeps shrinking, even though the total energy never changes. The "heat death" is the imagined end state: a universe in complete thermal equilibrium, everywhere the same temperature, maximum entropy, with no temperature difference left to drive any engine, process or life. It follows from the second law applied to the universe as one system — the book states that when all systems are taken together as the universe, its entropy always increases.

6.9. Is it possible for a cyclic reversible heat engine to absorb heat at constant temperature and transform it completely into work without rejecting some heat at low temperature? Explain.

No. That would be a machine converting heat from a single reservoir entirely into work, which Kelvin's statement of the second law forbids: there must be a sink at a lower temperature to which some heat is rejected. For a cycle the working substance returns to its starting state, so ΔU = 0 and W = Q₁ − Q₂; if nothing were rejected (Q₂ = 0) then W = Q₁, a 100% efficient engine, which would also need T₂ = 0 K by η = 1 − T₂/T₁. So some heat must always be rejected at a lower temperature, even in the ideal reversible case.

6.10. How does behaviour of real gases differ from ideal gas at high pressure and low temperature? Identify the reasons behind these differences based on kinetic theory of gases.

An ideal gas obeys PV = nRT exactly because kinetic theory assumes its molecules have negligible volume and exert no forces on each other. At high pressure the molecules are squeezed close together, so their own volume is no longer negligible compared with the container, and at low temperature they move slowly, so the attractive forces between them have time to act — the potential energy the ideal picture ignores is no longer zero. Both assumptions break down together at high pressure and low temperature, so real gases deviate from PV = nRT there, while at low pressure and high temperature the molecules are far apart and fast, and real gases approach ideal behaviour.

6.11. Show that area under P-V graph is equal to work done.

Consider a gas expanding at constant pressure P from volume V₁ to V₂. The work done by the gas is W = PΔV = P(V₂ − V₁). On a P–V graph, pressure is the vertical axis and volume the horizontal axis, so P(V₂ − V₁) is exactly the area of the rectangle under the horizontal line between V₁ and V₂. If the pressure changes during the expansion, divide the expansion into many tiny steps, each at nearly constant pressure Pᵢ with a tiny volume change ΔVᵢ: the work in one step is PᵢΔVᵢ, a thin strip of area, and the total work is the sum of the strips — which, as the strips get thinner, becomes the whole area under the P–V curve between V₁ and V₂. For a full cycle, the enclosed area ABCDA is the net work.

6.12. How is work done (i) by a gas (ii) on a gas?

(i) Work done by a gas: when the gas expands, it pushes the piston outward through a distance Δy against pressure P. The force is F = PA, so W = FΔy = PAΔy = PΔV, positive by the book's convention. The gas spends its own energy to do this — in an adiabatic expansion its temperature falls. (ii) Work done on a gas: when the gas is compressed, an outside agent pushes the piston inward, doing work on the gas. By the book's convention this work is taken as negative when counted as work done by the system; its magnitude is still PΔV, but the energy flows into the gas, raising its internal energy — in an adiabatic compression its temperature rises, as in the bicycle pump.

Constructed Response Questions

6.1. Explain how thermodynamics relates to the concept of energy conservation.

Thermodynamics is energy conservation applied to heat and work, in the form of the first law: Q = ΔU + W, or ΔU = Q − W. Every joule of heat that enters a system is accounted for — it either stays inside as a rise in internal energy or leaves as work done by the system. Nothing appears from nowhere and nothing vanishes: energy only changes form, from chemical potential energy to thermal energy, from thermal energy to mechanical work, and so on. In an isolated system the total stays constant over time, which is precisely the law of conservation of energy, and the first law is its statement for thermodynamic systems. The bicycle pump shows it in miniature: mechanical work in, with no heat supplied, becomes internal energy (a temperature rise) — the books balance exactly.

6.2. Explain how thermodynamics applies to biological systems, such as human body.

The human body is a thermodynamic system that takes in chemical energy as food, converts part of it into work and part into heat, and must keep its internal energy — its temperature — steady. When we walk, run or move we do work, which draws on internal energy; growth and replacing old cells also need energy. The first law, ΔU = Q − W, applied to the body says the body's temperature (its internal energy) is maintained by the food we eat: food supplies the energy that work and heat loss take away. That is also why the body gives off heat continuously and why heavy work makes us hot and hungry — work done and heat lost must be repaid by eating. The second law applies too: the body's ordered, low-entropy state is maintained only by taking in ordered energy (food) and exporting entropy as heat and waste to the surroundings, so the total entropy still increases.

6.3. A gas is expanding adiabatically. Explain what happens to temperature and pressure of the the gas.

Both fall. In an adiabatic expansion no heat enters or leaves (ΔQ = 0), so the first law gives W = −ΔU: the work the gas does in expanding is paid for out of its own internal energy, so its internal energy drops, and since internal energy is proportional to temperature, its temperature falls. Its pressure falls for two reasons at once: the volume is larger, so the molecules hit the walls less often, and the molecules are moving more slowly, so each hit is weaker. That is also why the adiabat on a P–V diagram is steeper than the isotherm — pressure is falling on both counts, and the gas obeys PVγ = constant.

6.4. A coffee cup is left on a table, and overtime coffee cup cools down. Explain thermodynamic processes occurring during this process.

The hot coffee and the cooler room are not in thermal equilibrium, so heat flows spontaneously from the coffee to the surroundings — by conduction through the cup, convection in the air, and radiation — until both reach the same temperature. This is an irreversible, natural process: it cannot be undone by reversing the controls, and it is driven by the second law. As the coffee loses heat its entropy decreases, but the surroundings gain that heat at a lower temperature, so their entropy increases by more (Q/T is larger at smaller T), and the total entropy of coffee plus surroundings increases. The coffee's internal energy falls as its temperature falls, and once it reaches room temperature the system is in thermal equilibrium and no net heat flows. No useful work is recovered from this flow — the energy is degraded to evenly spread thermal energy, which is the entropy story of section 6.10 in everyday form.

6.5. How can we explain different weather patterns through thermodynamical processes like wind, rain, etc.

⚠️ Note: the book gives no dedicated passage on weather, so this answer is built from the chapter's own processes (adiabatic expansion, heat flow, thermal equilibrium) applied to the atmosphere — it is a derived application, not a passage quoted from the book. The sun heats the ground unevenly, so air over warm ground warms, expands and rises; cooler, denser air flows in to replace it, and that flow is wind — heat moving from hot to cold, trying to restore equilibrium. As moist air rises it expands into lower pressure, and the expansion is effectively adiabatic: no time for heat exchange, so the air cools (W = −ΔU), its temperature falls, water vapour condenses into droplets, and clouds and rain follow — exactly the book's example of cloud formation as an adiabatic process. Descending air is compressed adiabatically and warms, which is why some winds arrive hot and dry. So wind, cloud and rain are the chapter's heat flow, adiabatic expansion and compression, and drive towards thermal equilibrium, written across the sky.

Comprehensive Questions (Long Questions)

6.1. What are the postulates of kinetic theory of gases? Derive a relation for ideal gas equation in the form PV = NkBT from general gas equation.

Postulates (section 6.1): (1) Gas molecules are in constant, random, straight-line motion until they collide. (2) The volume of the molecules is negligible compared with the volume of the gas — they are treated as point masses. (3) There are no attractive or repulsive forces between molecules except during collisions. (4) Collisions between molecules, and with the walls, are perfectly elastic — total kinetic energy is conserved. (5) The gas contains a very large number of particles, so statistical methods apply. (6) The average kinetic energy of the particles is directly proportional to the absolute temperature. (7) The pressure of the gas is due to the collisions of its particles with the walls. (8) The time of a collision is extremely short compared with the time between collisions. Derivation: a gas obeying these postulates is an ideal gas, and its general equation is PV = nRT, where P is pressure, V volume, n the number of moles, R = 8.314 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹ the universal gas constant, and T the absolute temperature. A mole contains Avogadro's number of particles, NA = 6.02 × 10²³, so if N is the number of atoms or molecules present, the number of moles is n = N / NA. Substituting in PV = nRT gives PV = (N / NA) RT. The combination R / NA is a new constant, the Boltzmann constant kB = R / NA = 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹. Hence PV = NkBT — the ideal gas equation counted in molecules instead of moles.

6.2. State and explain various gas laws.

Boyle's law (Robert Boyle, 1662): for a fixed mass of an ideal gas at constant temperature, the pressure varies inversely with the volume: P ∝ 1/V, so PV = constant, or P₁V₁ = P₂V₂. Physically, squeezing the same molecules into half the space doubles how often they hit the walls. The P–V graph is a falling curve (Fig. 6.1). Charles' law (Jacques Charles): for a fixed mass at constant pressure, the volume is directly proportional to the absolute temperature: V ∝ T, so V/T = constant, or V₁/T₁ = V₂/T₂. Warming a gas at fixed pressure makes its molecules push the boundary further out. The V–T graph is a straight line meeting the temperature axis at 0 K, −273 °C (Fig. 6.2). Pressure law (printed in the book as Joseph Lussac's law): for a fixed mass at constant volume, the pressure is directly proportional to the absolute temperature: P ∝ T, so P/T = constant, or P₁/T₁ = P₂/T₂. With nowhere to expand, faster, harder collisions show up entirely as pressure. The P–T graph is a straight line at constant volume (Fig. 6.3). All three are special cases of PV = nRT with one variable held fixed, and all three demand temperature in kelvin, never Celsius. Note on the book's heading: the book prints this third law under the name "Joseph Lussac's Law"; it is the pressure law, conventionally associated with Gay-Lussac.

6.3. Explain first law of thermodynamics in detail. Give an example in support of your explanation. Give its two applications.

Statement: in any thermodynamic process, when heat Q is added to a system, this energy appears as an increase in the internal energy ΔU stored in the system plus the work W done by the system on its surroundings: Q = ΔU + W, or ΔU = Q − W, where ΔU = U₂ − U₁ is the change from the first state to the second. Heat and work are both energy in transit, and the book's sign convention is that work done by the system is positive and work done on it is negative. Why it matters: it is the law of conservation of energy for thermal systems — energy changes form but the total in an isolated system stays constant — and it applies universally, to chemical reactions, electrical systems and nuclear reactions as well as engines. Internal energy itself is a function of state: it depends only on the initial and final states, not on the path, so only its change matters. Example: the bicycle pump with a blocked outlet. Pump rapidly and the pump gets hot, although no heat was supplied: the mechanical work of the hand went into the trapped air and raised its internal energy, shown by the temperature rise on a thermocouple thermometer (Fig. 6.6). Another worked example is Example 6.2: 42 J of heat supplied, 32 J of work done by the gas, leaving ΔU = 10 J. Two applications: (1) Heat engines — heat from a hot reservoir is split into work and rejected heat, W = Q₁ − Q₂ over a cycle, which is the first law applied to a cyclic process. (2) The human body — food supplies energy, work and heat loss draw on it, and the body's internal energy (temperature) is maintained by the balance, ΔU = Q − W, as in metabolism.

6.4. What is a refrigerator? Explain its working. Derive an expression for its co-efficient of performance.

Definition: a refrigerator is a device which maintains the temperature of a body below that of its surroundings. It operates in a cyclic process, but in reverse to that of a heat engine: it absorbs heat from a cold reservoir and gives it off to a hot reservoir, and work is done on the system (by the compressor) rather than by it. Working: it works on the Clausius statement of the second law — a heat engine operating in reverse. Heat Qc is drawn from the low-temperature reservoir (LTR) at T₁ by the compressor and thrown into the high-temperature reservoir (HTR) at T₂ with the help of external work W. Energy balance for the cycle gives Qc + W = Qh, where Qh is the heat rejected to the HTR, so the work input required is W = Qh − Qc. This is why a refrigerator needs electricity: heat will not climb uphill from cold to hot on its own. Derivation of COP: the purpose of a refrigerator is to extract as much heat Qc as possible for as little work W as possible, so its coefficient of performance is defined as E = Qc / W = Qc / (Qh − Qc). Since the heat transferred in an isothermal step is proportional to the kelvin temperature, Q ∝ T, we can replace Qc by T₁ and Qh by T₂, giving E = T₁ / (T₂ − T₁) (6.8). A better refrigerator has a larger E: more cooling per unit of work.

6.5. What is Carnot engine? Describe Carnot cycle. State Carnot theorem and derive an expression for efficiency of Carnot engine.

Carnot engine: in 1824 Sadi Carnot described an ideal engine using only isothermal and adiabatic processes. A heat engine operating in an ideal reversible cycle between two heat reservoirs at different temperatures would be the most efficient engine possible; a Carnot engine uses an ideal gas as its working substance. Carnot cycle (Fig. 6.9), four steps: (1) AB — the gas expands isothermally at T₁, absorbing heat Q₁ from the hot reservoir. (2) BC — the gas expands adiabatically until its temperature drops to T₂. (3) CD — the gas is compressed isothermally at T₂, rejecting heat Q₂ to the cold reservoir. (4) DA — the gas is compressed adiabatically to restore its initial state at T₁. Thermal and mechanical equilibrium is maintained throughout, so every step is perfectly reversible, and over the cycle ΔU = 0. Carnot's theorem: no heat engine can be more efficient than a Carnot engine operating between the same two temperatures; extended, all Carnot engines operating between the same two temperatures have the same efficiency, irrespective of the nature of the working substance. Derivation of efficiency: the net work in one cycle is the area enclosed by ABCDA, and from the net heat, W = Q₁ − Q₂ (first law, ΔU = 0). Efficiency is output over input: η = W / Q₁ = (Q₁ − Q₂) / Q₁ (6.6). The heat transferred in an isothermal step is proportional to the kelvin temperature, so Q₁ ∝ T₁ and Q₂ ∝ T₂, giving η = (T₁ − T₂) / T₁ = 1 − T₂ / T₁ (6.7), or as a percentage, (1 − T₂/T₁) × 100. The efficiency therefore depends only on the two reservoir temperatures, never reaches 100% unless T₂ = 0 K, and can in practice only be raised by raising T₁, since T₂ is usually near room temperature.

6.6. Define and explain the term "Entropy".

Definition: entropy, S, is a state variable introduced by Rudolf Clausius in 1856 to give a quantitative basis for the second law. If a system undergoes a reversible process in which it absorbs a quantity of heat ΔQ at absolute temperature T, the increase in its entropy is ΔS = ΔQ / T (6.9). Its unit is J K⁻¹. Explanation: like internal energy, it is the change that matters — positive when heat is added, negative when heat is removed. Entropy measures disorder: a natural process tends towards a state of greater disorder, and only processes for which the entropy of the system increases or remains constant are probable. A process with constant entropy is reversible; in every irreversible process entropy increases. The book's proof in miniature: heat Q flowing from a hotter reservoir T₁ to a colder one T₂ lowers the hot side's entropy by Q/T₁ and raises the cold side's by Q/T₂, and since T₁ > T₂, the gain beats the loss, so the net change (Q/T₂ − Q/T₁) is positive. That is the second law in entropy language: in a natural process, the entropy of system plus environment increases. Examples: hot and cold water mixed can never un-mix; ice melting at 0 °C gains entropy ΔS = mLf/T = 1.23 × 10³ J K⁻¹ per kilogram (Example 6.5); a shuffled deck of cards is more disordered than a sorted one. And every rise in entropy is a degradation of energy: energy moves from a form that can do useful work towards evenly spread thermal energy that cannot, until, for the universe as a whole, no temperature difference remains to drive anything — the heat death.

Numerical Problems

6.1. A gas occupies 6.0 L of volume at a pressure of 12 atm. What will be the volume of gas if the pressure is increased by 2.0 atm, assuming that temperature remains constant? (Ans: 5.14 L)

Step 1 — pick the law: temperature is constant, so this is Boyle's law: P₁V₁ = P₂V₂. Step 2 — list the data: V₁ = 6.0 L, P₁ = 12 atm. The pressure is increased by 2.0 atm, so the new pressure is P₂ = 12 + 2.0 = 14 atm (not 2.0 atm — that is the common trap). V₂ is unknown. Step 3 — substitute: 12 × 6.0 = 14 × V₂, so 72 = 14 V₂. Step 4 — solve: V₂ = 72 / 14 = 5.142… ≈ 5.14 L. The volume shrinks, as it must when pressure rises at constant temperature — and it matches the book's printed answer.

6.2. In a vacuum chamber which is connected to a cryogenic pump, pressure as low as 1.00 nPa is being attained. Calculate the number of molecules in 1.00 m³ vessel at this pressure and temperature of 300 K. (Ans: 2.41 × 10¹⁴ molecules)

⚠️ Warning — the book's printed answer disagrees with its own data; the working below is correct and the printed answer is flagged, not copied. Step 1 — pick the law: counting molecules means the Boltzmann form: PV = NkBT, so N = PV / (kBT). Step 2 — convert: 1.00 nPa = 1.00 × 10⁻⁹ Pa (nano = 10⁻⁹), V = 1.00 m³, T = 300 K, kB = 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹. Step 3 — substitute: N = (1.00 × 10⁻⁹ × 1.00) / (1.38 × 10⁻²³ × 300) = 1.00 × 10⁻⁹ / 4.14 × 10⁻²¹. Step 4 — solve: N = 2.415 × 10¹¹ ≈ 2.41 × 10¹¹ molecules. The book prints 2.41 × 10¹⁴, which is exactly 1000 times larger — it is the answer you would get for a pressure of 1.00 μPa (10⁻⁶ Pa) instead of 1.00 nPa, so the printed answer (or the printed unit) contains a factor-of-1000 slip. The value from the question as written is 2.41 × 10¹¹ molecules.

6.3. A gas undergoes a thermodynamic process where it absorbs 500 J of heat energy and performs 300 J work on its surroundings. Calculate the change in internal energy of the gas. (Ans: 200 J)

Step 1 — pick the law: first law, ΔU = Q − W, with the book's convention that work done by the system is positive. Step 2 — list the data: heat absorbed Q = +500 J (entering, so positive), work done by the gas W = +300 J. Step 3 — substitute: ΔU = 500 − 300. Step 4 — solve: ΔU = 200 J. Of the 500 J that came in, 300 J left as work and 200 J stayed behind as internal energy — matching the book's printed answer.

6.4. A Carnot engine is operating between a high temperature reservoir at 600 K and a low temperature reservoir at 300 K. Calculate: (i) the maximum possible efficiency (ii) the amount of work output if the engine absorbs 500 J of heat from the high temperature reservoir. (Ans: (i) 50% (ii) 250 J)

Part (i) — efficiency: for a Carnot engine, η = 1 − T₂/T₁. Here T₁ = 600 K (hot) and T₂ = 300 K (cold), both already in kelvin, so η = 1 − 300/600 = 1 − 0.5 = 0.5, i.e. 50%. This is the maximum possible efficiency between these temperatures — no engine can beat it (Carnot's theorem). Part (ii) — work output: efficiency is output over input, η = W / Q₁, so W = η × Q₁ = 0.5 × 500 = 250 J. The other 250 J is rejected as heat to the cold reservoir (Q₂ = Q₁ − W = 250 J). Both parts match the book's printed answers.

6.5. A refrigerator extracts 1200 J of heat from its interior (the cold reservoir) and releases 1800 J of heat to the surrounding environment (the hot reservoir) during each cycle. Calculate: (i) the work input required per cycle. (ii) the coefficient of performance (COP) of the refrigerator. (Ans: (i) 600 J (ii) 2)

Part (i) — work input: energy balance for the refrigerator cycle: Qc + W = Qh, so W = Qh − Qc = 1800 − 1200 = 600 J per cycle. That is the electrical work the compressor must supply each cycle. Part (ii) — COP: E = Qc / W = 1200 / 600 = 2. In plain words, each joule of work buys two joules of cooling — a COP above 1 is normal for a refrigerator, because it moves heat rather than creating cold. Both parts match the book's printed answers.

6.6. Calculate the entropy change when 1.0 mole of ice at 0 °C melts to form liquid water at the same temperature. (Heat of fusion of ice per mole = 6.01 × 10³ J) (Ans: 22.0 J K⁻¹)

Step 1 — pick the formula: ΔS = ΔQ / T, for a reversible (constant-temperature) change. Step 2 — heat absorbed: melting one mole takes ΔQ = 1.0 mol × 6.01 × 10³ J mol⁻¹ = 6.01 × 10³ J. Step 3 — temperature in kelvin: 0 °C = 273 K (never use Celsius in ΔS = ΔQ/T). Step 4 — divide: ΔS = 6.01 × 10³ / 273 = 22.015… ≈ 22.0 J K⁻¹. Positive, as it must be: melting increases disorder, so entropy rises — matching the book's printed answer. (Compare Example 6.5, which does the same calculation per kilogram and gets 1.23 × 10³ J K⁻¹.)

6.7. A gas occupies 400 mL at 20 °C. What volume will it occupy at 80 °C, assuming constant pressure? (Ans: 482 mL)

Step 1 — pick the law: constant pressure, so Charles' law: V₁/T₁ = V₂/T₂. Step 2 — convert to kelvin first: T₁ = 20 + 273 = 293 K, T₂ = 80 + 273 = 353 K. (Using Celsius here is the classic error — it would give 1600 mL, which is nonsense.) V₁ = 400 mL, V₂ unknown. Step 3 — substitute: 400 / 293 = V₂ / 353, so V₂ = 400 × 353 / 293. Step 4 — solve: V₂ = 141200 / 293 = 481.9… ≈ 482 mL. The gas expands on heating, as expected — matching the book's printed answer.

6.8. A gas has a pressure of 2 atm at 300 K. What pressure will it have at 450 K, assuming constant volume? (Ans: 3 atm)

Step 1 — pick the law: constant volume, so the pressure law: P₁/T₁ = P₂/T₂. Step 2 — list the data: P₁ = 2 atm, T₁ = 300 K, T₂ = 450 K (both already in kelvin, so no conversion needed), P₂ unknown. Step 3 — substitute: 2 / 300 = P₂ / 450, so P₂ = 2 × 450 / 300. Step 4 — solve: P₂ = 900 / 300 = 3 atm. Heating a sealed gas by half as much again (in kelvin) raises its pressure by half as much again — matching the book's printed answer.

ENGLISH

This chapter is one argument in four moves. First, a gas is a crowd of molecules, and their motion explains pressure and temperature; the ideal gas law PV = nRT = NkBT, with the Boltzmann constant kB = 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹, turns that picture into numbers, and Boyle's, Charles' and the pressure law are its three one-variable faces. Second, internal energy is the molecules' kinetic energy, heat and work are energy in transit, and the first law Q = ΔU + W keeps the books — nothing is created or destroyed. Third, how the change is made matters: slow and isothermal (Q = W, ΔU = 0) versus fast and adiabatic (W = −ΔU), reversible versus irreversible, and the heat engine that turns Q₁ − Q₂ into work. Fourth, the second law sets the limits: no engine beats the Carnot efficiency 1 − T₂/T₁, a refrigerator is a heat engine in reverse with COP T₁/(T₂ − T₁), and entropy ΔS = ΔQ/T always increases overall, degrading energy towards disorder — the heat death in the far distance.

Topics covered, with links:

Revision guidance: learn the four formulas cold — PV = nRT, W = PΔV, Q = ΔU + W, and η = 1 − T₂/T₁ — then practise the sign convention until it is automatic (work by the system positive, heat in positive). Convert Celsius to kelvin before touching any gas-law or efficiency question, and remember that an adiabat is steeper than an isotherm because pressure falls twice over. For the exercise, the traps are flagged in place: MCQ 6.6, 6.7 and 6.8 are loosely or wrongly printed, and Numerical 6.2's printed answer is off by a factor of 1000 — trust the working, not the printed key.
