Interference and diffraction already told us that light behaves like a wave. But they left one question open: does light shake along its path, like sound, or across its path, like a rope being flicked? Polarization settles that question, and it is the whole reason this chapter exists.
Picture a stretched string. You can flick it up and down, side to side, or at any angle in between — in every case the string's particles vibrate perpendicular to the direction the wave travels. That is a transverse wave. If you force the vibration into one single plane, the wave is said to be polarized. The plane of polarization is simply the plane that holds both the direction of vibration and the direction the wave is travelling in.
Light is an electromagnetic wave, so its "vibration" is the electric field vector E, with the magnetic field vector B swinging at right angles to it. Ordinary light — sunlight, a bulb, a candle flame — has its E vectors pointing in every possible plane. That is unpolarized light. If the vibrations are confined to one plane only, the light is polarized. Polarization happens only with transverse waves. Sound, being longitudinal, can never be polarized, and that fact alone proves light is transverse.
📌 Book note: the chapter's learning outcomes ask you to explain that polarization belongs to transverse waves, use Malus's law for a plane-polarized beam through filters, explain polaroids in sky photography and stress analysis, and describe gravitational waves and interferometers. Keep that list beside you — every section below answers one of those points.
So how do you actually turn ordinary, all-planes light into one-plane light? The book lists three routes: pass it through a polarizing filter (a polaroid sheet), use a polarizing beam splitter, or use certain optical crystals or materials such as calcite and quartz. Of these, the filter is the one you will meet most often, in sunglasses and camera lenses alike.
Think of a polarizing filter as a fence with vertical slits. Unpolarized light arrives with E vectors pointing in all directions. Only the component that lines up parallel to the filter's axis gets through; everything else is blocked. What comes out the other side is plane polarized light, vibrating in a single plane. That is all polarization is — not a change in the light's colour or speed, just a sorting of its vibrations.
Two words to keep straight. The first sheet, which does the polarizing, is the polarizer. A second, identical sheet placed after it is the analyzer — it tests, or analyses, the light that comes through. The same piece of polaroid can play either role; the name depends on the job it is doing in that experiment.
Not all polarized light looks the same. It depends on what the tip of the electric field vector actually draws in space as the wave travels, and the book gives three basic types.
1. Linear polarization. The E vector swings back and forth in a single plane — the case you have just met. Light through a polarizing filter, like the light in polarizing sunglasses, is the textbook example.
2. Circular polarization. Here the E vector rotates as the wave moves, clockwise (right-handed) or anticlockwise (left-handed), so its tip traces a circle. That happens when two equal perpendicular components are 90° out of phase. Light reflected from a CD or DVD is the book's example.
3. Elliptical polarization. A mix of the two: the E vector traces an ellipse. This happens when the two components of E are not equal, or differ in phase by some angle other than 90°. Light through a stressed plate or a waveplate is the example given.
The quick way to remember it: one plane means linear, a round path means circular, and a squashed round path means elliptical. The physics is the same E vector in all three — only its path changes.
Ordinary bulb light is unpolarized because its electrical vibrations point randomly in space. Put a sheet of polaroid — the polarizer — in its path, and the light that gets through is plane polarized. Now add a second sheet, the analyzer, with its axis parallel to the first. The light sails straight through that too.
Now comes the telling part. Slowly rotate the analyzer about the beam as an axis. The emerging light gets dimmer and dimmer, and when the two axes are mutually perpendicular, it vanishes altogether. Keep turning, and it comes back, brightest again when the axes are parallel. Try to explain that with a longitudinal wave and you cannot: a longitudinal vibration has no "direction across the beam" to block, so crossed sheets could never switch it off. The fact that light can be switched off this way is direct proof that light waves are transverse.
📌 Ponder upon! (book's side box): light reflected from a smooth water surface is partially polarized parallel to the surface — that is why a lake's glare looks different through polarizing glasses, and why fishermen and photographers care about this chapter at all.
You do not always need a filter. In 1808, Malus discovered that ordinary light reflected from a flat sheet of glass comes out polarized. Look at that reflected light through a rotating polaroid and at one particular orientation it is practically extinguished. The most suitable angle of incidence is about 57° for glass, and light reflected from a table surface behaves the same way — viewed through a rotated polaroid, it shows itself partially plane polarized.
The special angle is called the polarizing angle, or Brewster angle θp. At that angle, the reflected beam and the refracted beam are at right angles to each other. So if θr is the angle of refraction, θp + θr = 90°, which means θr = 90° − θp. Now apply Snell's law, n1 sin θp = n2 sin θr = n2 sin(90° − θp) = n2 cos θp. Divide both sides by cos θp and you get the clean result the book boxes as equation (8.1): tan θp = n2 / n1. If the first medium is air (n1 = 1), this is simply tan θp = n.
Example 8.1 (book, worked): a beam strikes glass of refractive index √3 at the polarizing angle. What is the angle of refraction? tan θp = n = √3, so θp = tan−1(√3) = 60°. Then θr = 90° − θp = 90° − 60° = 30°.
📌 Interesting information (book's side box): Malus's law is also used to study the polarization of light in biological systems, such as the polarization of light by cell membranes — polarization is not just a lab trick, it is a measuring tool in biology too.
Malus's law answers the practical question: once light is already plane polarized, how bright is it after a second filter? The law says the intensity I after the analyzer is directly proportional to the square of the cosine of the angle θ between the transmission axes of the analyzer and the polarizer: I = I0 cos²θ, where I0 is the intensity of the polarized light falling on the analyzer.
Why the square? A polarized beam of amplitude A0 hitting the analyzer at angle θ splits into two parts: A0cosθ along the analyzer's axis, which passes, and A0sinθ across it, which is absorbed. So the transmitted amplitude is A = A0cosθ. Intensity, though, goes as the square of amplitude (I ∝ A²), so I = I0cos²θ. The analyzer is also used to reduce intensity smoothly — just turn it — and to adjust brightness without changing the lamp at all.
The two extremes are worth memorizing. If θ = 0°, cos²θ = 1 and I = I0: everything that reached the analyzer gets through. If θ = 90°, cos²θ = 0 and I = 0: nothing gets through, the crossed-polarizer darkness you met in section 4. The book also notes that certain crystals — tourmaline, calcite and the like — confine vibrations to one plane by their very structure, and that light can also be polarized by natural processes: reflection, refraction and scattering.
📌 For your information (book's side box): a vertical polarizer followed by a horizontal one passes no light at all. The first sheet makes the light vertical; the second sheet, being horizontal, has nothing matching its axis to let through.
Some substances do something stranger than blocking light: they rotate its plane of polarization as it passes through. That ability is called optical activity, and a substance with it is said to be optically active. You detect the rotation with a polarizer on one side and an analyzer on the other — the analyzer has to be turned by some angle before the light goes dark again, and that angle is the rotation.
The book's examples are quartz crystals, cinnabar (HgS), sugar water, insulin and collagen. Certain organic substances, like sugar and tartaric acid, show this rotation when they are in solution, which is why the property is useful: measure the rotation and you can work out the concentration of the solution without any chemical test. The amount and direction of rotation depend on four things: (i) the type of substance, (ii) its concentration, (iii) the distance the light travels through it, and (iv) the wavelength of the light.
Why does it happen at all? The book points to the asymmetric shape of the molecules, such as a helical shape. A few millimetres of such a crystal can twist the plane by many degrees. So a twisted molecule twists the light — a neat case of the microscopic shape showing up in a measurement you can make on a bench.
📌 Interesting information (book's side box): a sugar solution rotates the plane of polarization of the incident light, so the light is no longer horizontal but at an angle θ. The analyzer therefore stops the light when it is rotated away from the vertical (crossed) position — the rotation angle itself becomes the measurement.
📌 Do you know? (book's side box): looking through two polarizers when they are "crossed" lets very little light through — the same crossed-polarizer darkness, seen with your own eyes.
📌 Tidbit (book's side box, with answer): a beam of unpolarized light passes through a foggy atmosphere. What is the polarization state of the scattered light? Scattered light is partially polarized — scattering sorts the vibrations part-way, just as it does for skylight (see Short Question 8.2). The book poses this as a question; the answer follows from its own scattering discussion, and is flagged as such in the exercise notes.
Polarization is not a curiosity kept in a textbook. The book justifies its importance field by field: optics and photonics (polarized sunglasses, LCD screens, optical communication), imaging and microscopy (better images, less glare, more contrast, especially in microscopy and medical imaging), medical applications (cancer diagnosis, tissue imaging, laser surgery, telling tissue types apart), astronomy (reading the polarization of light from distant stars and the cosmic microwave background), and a string of miscellaneous fields from biology and chemistry to communication systems. Two applications get a full treatment, and the exam loves both.
1. Sky photography. A camera photographing clouds is fitted with a polaroid. Skylight is polarized by scattering, so the filter cuts the glare and haze that scattering produces, blocks the excessive bright white light while letting other colours through, and sharpens contrast. The result is a brighter, more detailed picture — the clouds stand out instead of washing out.
2. Stress analysis of materials. In materials science, polarizers analyze the stress and strain in plastics, metals and glass. When a material is stressed, its molecular structure changes, and so does the way it interacts with light: interference fringes appear, and those fringes give qualitative information about the material. By shining polarized light through a transparent material and studying how its polarization changes, researchers can determine stress patterns, spot weaknesses or defects, check optical properties, and predict how the material will behave under different conditions. The technique is called photoelasticity, and it is widely used in engineering, materials science and quality control.
Worked examples from the book belong here too, because they show the formulas in action. Example 8.2: find the refractive index of a medium whose polarizing angle is 54.5°. tan θp = n, so n = tan 54.5° = 1.4. Example 8.3: polarized light of intensity 75 W m−2 passes an analyzer at 30° to the polarizer's axis. I = I0cos²θ = 75 × cos²30° = 75 × (0.866)² = 75 × 0.75 = 56.25 W m−2. Example 8.4: polarized light of amplitude 5 units passes a polarizer at 60° to the original direction. A = A0cosθ = 5 × cos 60° = 5 × 0.5 = 2.5 units. (The book prints "W m−2" loosely as "N m−2" in one line of Example 8.3; the unit meant is intensity, W m−2.)
Now the chapter changes gear completely. A gravitational wave is a stretching and compressing of space-time, and it can be observed by measuring the change in length between two objects. The book's own definition is worth learning word for word: gravitational waves are "ripples in the fabric of space-time, produced by violent cosmic events, like colliding black holes or neutron stars, that travel at the speed of light, carrying information about their source."
The simplest picture is a pond. Throw a stone in, and ripples spread over the water surface, carrying information about the stone. In the same way, a violent cosmic event sends ripples through space-time itself, and they can be picked up far away by gravitational wave observatories, revealing the event's presence and properties. That is not just a poetic comparison — it is how the detection story actually works.
Gravitational waves were a prediction of Einstein's general theory of relativity, in which gravity is not a force pulling things, but a curvature of space-time caused by massive bodies. The book's image is a dent in a mattress: heavy things warp the space around them, and that is why we feel gravity. Einstein predicted the waves in 1916; they were first detected in 2015 and announced in 2016, opening a new window on the universe's most extreme events.
A binary system is the key source: a system of two compact objects — black holes, neutron stars or white dwarfs — orbiting each other and emitting gravitational waves. The book lists four basic types. Continuous waves come from a single massive object spinning at a constant rate, like a neutron star, with constant frequency and amplitude (white dwarf binaries also produce them). Compact binary inspirals come from a binary system — two neutron stars, two black holes, or a neutron star with a black hole — spiralling into each other; as they spiral, frequency and amplitude gradually increase. Burst waves come from violent events like supernovae, gamma-ray bursts or cosmic strings. Stochastic waves are weak, random signals from the superposition of many weak sources, such as distant binary systems, and are the hardest to detect.
Every accelerating object makes gravitational waves in principle — vehicles and aeroplanes included — but Earthly masses and accelerations are far too small to make waves big enough for our instruments. What a wave carries depends on the system: its masses, orbital period and frequency, and the eccentricity e of the orbit — how far the orbit deviates from a perfect circle. The book's table: e = 0 is a circular orbit, 0 < e < 1 is elliptical, e = 1 is a parabolic trajectory, and e > 1 is hyperbolic. Binary mergers — two massive objects colliding and uniting into one more massive object — are among the most intense cosmic events, and their waves travel freely through space-time at the speed of light, weakening as they move away from the source. Their main detectors are LIGO in the USA and Virgo in Italy, and the waves carry information about the system's mass, spin and merger dynamics.
A gravitational wave passing through a body with mass makes that body experience periodic stretching and compressing, also called space-time distortion. The effect is known as tidal forces, and it comes from the wave's oscillating nature: as the wave passes, it makes the space-time around the body oscillate, stretching and squeezing the body in the direction perpendicular to the wave's propagation. It is the same kind of effect as the tides on Earth caused by the Moon's and Sun's gravitational pull — a difference in pull across a body, rather than a uniform pull on the whole thing.
How big is the stretch? That depends on the wave's strength and on the mass and size of the body. For waves reaching Earth from far-off events like the merger of two black holes or neutron stars, the amplitude is extremely small — typically of the order of 10−21 to 10−22 metres. Stop and feel that number: the distortion caused by the wave is incredibly tiny, which is exactly why it takes extremely sensitive instruments to detect it at all. It is also, the book stresses, an important prediction of Einstein's general theory of relativity — the theory said space itself should wobble, and a century later we measured the wobble.
Small does not mean unimportant. Despite their tiny amplitude, gravitational waves offer a unique window into the universe: strong-field gravity, tests of general relativity, and corners of the universe that light simply cannot show us, because light gets blocked and scattered where gravity waves pass straight through.
An interferometer is an optical tool for detecting gravitational waves: a very sensitive device that uses the interference of LASER beams (LASER = Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation). A gravitational-wave interferometer measures tiny changes in distance between mirrors, caused by a wave passing through the detector. The basic LIGO interferometer is the book's model, and the book is honest that the real machine is much more complex than its simple figure.
LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory) differs from a conventional interferometer in two ways: it is 1000 times larger than a conventional device, and it uses LASER light whereas a conventional interferometer uses normal light. Its basic components are: (1) a laser producing a stable, high-intensity beam; (2) a power recycling mirror, which reflects LASER light that has already travelled through the instrument back into it — hence "recycling"; (3) a beam splitter, dividing the LASER beam into two perpendicular beams; (4) mirrors reflecting the beams, creating two perpendicular arms; (5) a Fabry-Perot cavity, two mirrors facing each other, whose purpose is to enhance the path length; (6) photodetectors measuring the returning beams and detecting tiny phase shifts; and (7) arm cavities enhancing the LASER light and increasing sensitivity.
How it works. A laser beam is split into two perpendicular beams, each travelling down one of two identical arms. The beams bounce off mirrors at the ends of each arm and return to the starting point, where they recombine. If a gravitational wave passes through, it causes a tiny disturbance in the distance between the mirrors, resulting in a phase shift between the two beams. When the beams recombine, they create an interference pattern, measured by a photodetector. The tiny phase shift caused by the wave alters that pattern, and that alteration is how the detector senses the wave's presence.
First detection and Virgo. On 14 September 2015, the universe's gravitational waves were observed for the very first time by LIGO. The waves, predicted by Einstein 100 years earlier, came from a collision between two black holes and took 1.3 billion years to reach the LIGO detector in the USA. For this work, Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne received the Nobel Prize in 2017. The book notes with pride that one of the team members, Nergis Mavalvala, a professor at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), belongs to Pakistan. Similar to LIGO, Virgo works under the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO) at Cascina near Pisa, Italy. Virgo is also an interferometer, with two arms of 3 km (LIGO has 4 km arms), named after the Virgo constellation, visible in the night sky during March, April and May. The Virgo cluster is a group of about 1,500 galaxies about 50 million light years away — and remember, one light year (LY) is the distance light travels in one year. The book prints this as approximately 9.5 billion km, which is a slip — the correct value is about 9.5 trillion km (9.5 × 1012 km); see the flagged note below. Virgo has been involved in gravitational wave events, with its first detection in 2017.
Example 8.5 (book, worked): gravitational waves of wavelength 4000 km — find their frequency. λ = 4000 km = 4 × 106 m, c = 3 × 108 m s−1. Since v = fλ and v = c, f = c/λ = (3 × 108) / (4 × 106) = 0.75 × 102 s−1 = 75 Hz. Example 8.6 (book, worked): a binary system emits gravitational waves with a frequency of 10−1 Hz — what is their wavelength? λ = c/f = (3 × 108) / (10−1) = 3 × 109 m.
⚠️ Flagged book slip (light-year value): the book's Virgo paragraph says "1 LY = 9.5 billion km" and, in the same paragraph, the standard figure is 9.5 × 1012 km (9.5 trillion km). The section above keeps the book's sentence and adds this flag so the two do not get confused in revision: use 1 LY ≈ 9.5 × 1012 km.
The book's exercise (printed pages 182–184) has five parts: Multiple Choice Questions (13), Short Answer Questions (5), Constructed Response Questions (6), Comprehensive Questions (8) and Numerical Problems (11) — 43 questions in all, every one answered below. There is no separate inquisitive or review section in this chapter's exercise, so none is invented here. Where a question goes beyond a single book passage, the answer says so plainly instead of pretending the book said it. ⚠️ Two numerical keys need care: in Numerical 8.4 the book's 67.5° is a rounded value (exact: about 67.2°), and in Numerical 8.10 the book's 0.25 follows Malus's law for light already polarized before the analyzer — counting from the original unpolarized beam would give 0.125, and that difference is flagged at the question itself.
8.1. The phenomenon of polarization of light is:
Answer: (b) the property of light to vibrate in a specific plane — Polarization is exactly the restriction of vibration to a specific plane (section 8.1). Scattering is a different phenomenon, straight-line travel is rectilinear propagation, and colour change is dispersion, not polarization.
8.2. Malus's law states that:
Answer: (a) the intensity of light is directly proportional to the square of the cosine of the angle between the light wave and the analyzer — Malus's law is I = I₀ cos²θ (section 8.5). The cosine is squared because intensity goes as amplitude squared.
8.3. The intensity of light when it passes through a polarizer:
Answer: (b) decreases — A polarizer blocks every component except the one parallel to its axis, so the transmitted beam is dimmer than what arrived — for unpolarized light it is exactly halved. It becomes zero only for a second, crossed analyzer.
8.4. The angle between the light wave and the analyzer is called:
Answer: (a) polarization angle — The book's intended answer is the polarization angle: θ in Malus's law is the angle between the polarizer's and analyzer's transmission axes (section 8.5). Refraction and reflection angles belong to ray diagrams, not to this law.
8.5. The key purpose of an analyzer in a polarization experiment is:
Answer: (b) to measure the intensity of light — The first sheet already polarizes the light; the analyzer's job is to test it — rotating it changes the transmitted intensity in the Malus pattern, which is how intensity (and the transverse nature of light) is measured.
8.6. The mathematical representation of Malus's law is:
Answer: (a) I = I₀ cos²θ — Directly from section 8.5: I = I₀ cos²θ. The sin² form would describe the blocked component, not the transmitted one. میلَس کا قانون I = I₀ cos²θ ہے۔
8.7. The effect of increasing the angle between the light wave and the analyzer on the intensity of light is:
Answer: (b) the intensity decreases — As θ grows from 0° toward 90°, cos²θ falls from 1 toward 0, so the intensity falls with it. It reaches zero only at exactly 90°.
8.8. The condition for maximum intensity of light in a polarization experiment is when:
Answer: (b) the light wave and analyzer are parallel — At θ = 0° (parallel axes), cos²θ = 1 and I = I₀, the maximum. At 45° the intensity is already halved.
8.9. The unwanted light that interferes with vision is termed as:
Answer: (b) glare — The book's sky-photography and sunglasses discussion calls this interfering light glare — the dazzling reflected light that a polarizer cuts out. Haze is the milky scattering itself, not the dazzle.
8.10. Who predicted the existence of gravitational waves?
Answer: (b) Albert Einstein — Einstein predicted them in 1916 from general relativity (section 8.6); they were detected in 2015, a century later.
8.11. What are gravitational waves?
Answer: (d) Ripples in the fabric of spacetime — The book's definition (section 8.6): ripples in the fabric of space-time, produced by violent cosmic events, travelling at the speed of light. They are not electromagnetic or ordinary mechanical waves.
8.12. Which is the primary method used to detect gravitational waves?
Answer: (c) LASER interferometry — LIGO and Virgo detect them with laser interferometry (section 8.7) — measuring arm-length changes far too small for any telescope to see.
8.13. Which of the following is a primary source of gravitational waves?
Answer: (a) Binary black hole merger — A binary black hole merger is the book's headline source (sections 8.6–8.7, and the 2015 detection itself). Solar flares, earthquakes and solar wind are far too weak and local.
Ordinary sunglasses only dim everything equally — they are dark glass. Polaroid sunglasses do something smarter: they block the polarized glare while letting useful light through. Glare from roads, water and other smooth surfaces is largely polarized parallel to the surface (see the book's "Ponder upon!" box), and a polaroid lens with a vertical axis stops that horizontal component. So you lose the dazzle but keep the scene clear and detailed. That is also why polaroid lenses help drivers, fishermen and photographers more than plain tinted glass ever could.
Yes. Sunlight itself is unpolarized, but when it is scattered by small particles and molecules in the atmosphere, the scattered light comes out partially polarized. Scattering sorts the vibrations part-way: the component vibrating in one direction is scattered more strongly than the other, so the skylight reaching your eye no longer has equal vibrations in all planes. That is exactly why a polarizing filter on a camera can darken the sky and cut haze (section 8, sky photography) — it is blocking the polarized part of the skylight. This answer follows from the book's own scattering discussion; the book states the sky-photography effect and the scattering mechanism, and the "partially polarized" conclusion is drawn from them, so it is flagged as derived reasoning rather than a single quoted sentence.
Wherever brightness needs smooth, lampless control, Malus's law is the working rule. Polarized sunglasses use it: the lens axis is set against the glare's polarization, cutting intensity by cos²θ. LCD screens switch pixels by rotating polarization between two filters, so the light through each pixel follows the same law. Photographers turn a polarizing filter to dial the sky's brightness down by a chosen amount, and optical instruments use a rotating analyzer as a dimmer. In each case the same sentence applies: turn the analyzer by θ, and the intensity becomes I₀cos²θ. The book names sunglasses, LCD screens and optical communication among polarization's uses; these everyday workings are applications of that same law, so this answer is flagged as applied reasoning from the book's applications list.
Brewster's angle is used wherever reflected glare must be removed or polarization must be produced without a filter. Polarized sunglasses and camera filters exploit the fact that light reflected at the Brewster angle is plane polarized, so the unwanted reflected component can be blocked. Photography uses it to cut reflections from water and glass surfaces. Optical instruments and laser systems use Brewster windows — glass set at the polarizing angle — to produce polarized beams with almost no reflection loss. The book gives the law and the reflection mechanism (section 8.4) but no dedicated applications list, so these uses are flagged as standard applications derived from the law, not as a passage quoted from the book.
In Einstein's general relativity, space-time curvature is the bending of the combined fabric of space and time by mass and energy. The book's picture is a dent in a mattress: a heavy body warps the space around it, and other bodies follow that warp — that following is what we feel as gravity. So gravity is not a force reaching out and pulling; it is the shape of space-time itself. When those massive bodies accelerate, especially in violent events like black-hole mergers, the warp itself ripples outward, and those ripples are gravitational waves.
Plane polarized light is used in: (1) polarized sunglasses, which cut reflected glare from roads and water; (2) sky and cloud photography, where a polaroid filter removes haze and sharpens contrast; (3) LCD screens, which control each pixel by rotating polarization; (4) stress analysis (photoelasticity), where polarized light reveals stress patterns in plastics, metals and glass; (5) medical imaging, including tissue imaging and laser surgery; and (6) optical communication systems. These are the book's own fields from its "Importance of Polarization" section, collected into one list.
Yes — a polarizer and an analyzer are the same physical device; only the job changes. The first sheet polarizes the light, and any second sheet placed after it analyzes it. Two examples: (1) In the section 8.3 experiment, the second polaroid sheet is the analyzer — rotating it dims and finally extinguishes the beam, proving the light is transverse. (2) In polarized sunglasses worn over a camera polarizer, or in two stacked polaroid sheets in a classroom demo, either sheet can be the one you rotate to test the light; the sheet you hold still is the polarizer and the one you turn is the analyzer. Swap their roles and the experiment still works.
Polarized sunglasses are designed around Malus's law, I = I₀cos²θ. Reflected glare — from a wet road, a lake, a car bonnet — is largely horizontally polarized, because reflection polarizes light parallel to the surface. The sunglass lens is a polaroid sheet with its transmission axis set vertical, so θ between the glare's vibration and the lens axis is close to 90°, cos²θ is close to zero, and almost none of the glare gets through. Ordinary, unpolarized scene light still has a vertical component, so half of it passes and the scene stays visible. Example: driving toward a low sun on a wet road — without polaroids the road throws a blinding horizontal sheet of light at your eyes; with polaroid lenses that sheet is cut out, while road markings and traffic stay clear, because their light is not purely horizontal. The book gives the glare mechanism and Malus's law separately; joining them into this design explanation is applied reasoning, flagged as such.
The sky would appear black, even in daytime, with the Sun shining as a bright disc against darkness. Blue sky is not the colour of space; it is sunlight scattered by the atmosphere's molecules and particles, and that scattered light is what fills the sky with blue (and, near the Sun, with white glare). With no atmosphere there would be nothing to scatter the light, so no blue wash and no haze — exactly the view astronauts report from the Moon, which has no appreciable atmosphere. The book establishes the scattering mechanism for skylight and sky photography; the Moon-like black daytime sky is the direct consequence, so this answer is flagged as derived reasoning.
Detecting gravitational waves matters for three reasons. First, it confirmed Einstein's general relativity a century after the 1916 prediction — a theory tested in a completely new way. Second, it opened a new kind of astronomy: waves pass through dust and matter that block light, so they reveal events — black-hole and neutron-star mergers — that telescopes cannot see at all. Third, each detection carries the source's own information — its masses, spins and merger dynamics — letting us test strong-field gravity and explore the universe in ways previously impossible, as the book puts it. The 2015 LIGO detection, from a merger 1.3 billion light years away, proved the whole approach works.
Tidal forces form when a gravitational influence is stronger on one side of a body than on the other, so the body is stretched along one direction and squeezed along the other. In the book's gravitational-wave case, the passing wave makes space-time itself oscillate, so a body in its path is periodically stretched and compressed in the direction perpendicular to the wave's travel — that oscillating stretch-and-squeeze is the tidal force. The familiar Earth example works the same way: the Moon's pull is stronger on the ocean facing it than on the far side, and that difference raises the tides. The size of the effect depends on the wave's strength and on the body's mass and size; for waves reaching Earth it is only about 10−21 to 10−22 metres.
Polarization is the phenomenon in which the vibrations of a transverse wave are restricted to a single plane. A wave whose vibrations stay in one plane is polarized; a wave vibrating in all planes is unpolarized. It can happen only with transverse waves, because only they vibrate across their direction of travel — that is why polarization proves light is transverse and sound, being longitudinal, can never be polarized. In electromagnetic waves, the vibrating quantity is the electric field vector E (with B at right angles to it). Ordinary light has E in all planes, so it is unpolarized; passing it through a polarizing filter, a beam splitter or a crystal like calcite lets through only the component parallel to the transmission axis, leaving plane polarized light. Reflection, refraction and scattering polarize light the same way, naturally. The classification is: linear — E swings in one plane (polarizing sunglasses); circular — the E tip traces a circle, two equal components 90° out of phase (light reflected from a CD/DVD); elliptical — the E tip traces an ellipse, components unequal or phased by an angle other than 90° (light through a stressed plate or waveplate).
Plane polarized light is produced by passing unpolarized light through a polaroid sheet (polarizer): only the E component parallel to the sheet's axis gets through, and the emerging light vibrates in one plane. It can also be produced by reflection at the Brewster angle, by a beam splitter, or by crystals such as calcite and quartz. It is detected with a second polaroid sheet, the analyzer. With the analyzer's axis parallel to the polarizer's, the light passes fully; as the analyzer is rotated, the light dims, and when the axes are perpendicular it disappears completely, returning as rotation continues. What it proves: light waves are transverse. A longitudinal wave has no vibration direction across the beam to block, so crossed polaroids could never extinguish it — the fact that they do extinguish light is direct proof of its transverse character.
Ordinary light reflected from a flat surface comes out polarized — Malus discovered this in 1808 with a glass sheet. When unpolarized light strikes glass, the reflected beam is found, on testing with a rotating polaroid, to be practically plane polarized at one particular angle of incidence. That angle is the polarizing (Brewster) angle, about 57° for glass. At that angle the reflected and refracted beams are at right angles to each other, so with θp + θr = 90° and Snell's law, tan θp = n2/n1 (for air, tan θp = n). Light reflected from other smooth surfaces, such as a table top or a water surface, is likewise partially plane polarized — which is why rotating a polaroid over such a reflection makes the glare appear and disappear. No filter is needed: the reflection itself does the sorting.
Malus's law states that the intensity I of plane polarized light after passing through an analyzer is directly proportional to the square of the cosine of the angle θ between the transmission axes of the analyzer and the polarizer: I = I₀ cos²θ, where I₀ is the intensity of the polarized light incident on the analyzer. Why the formula works: a polarized beam of amplitude A₀ striking the analyzer at angle θ resolves into A₀cosθ along the analyzer's axis, which passes, and A₀sinθ across it, which is absorbed — so the transmitted amplitude is A = A₀cosθ. Intensity is proportional to the square of amplitude (I ∝ A²), so I = I₀cos²θ. The extremes check out: θ = 0° gives I = I₀ (full transmission) and θ = 90° gives I = 0 (complete extinction, the crossed-polarizer case). The analyzer thus doubles as a smooth dimmer: rotate it and the brightness follows cos²θ exactly.
A polaroid (polarizing filter) is a sheet of material that transmits only the component of light vibrating parallel to its transmission axis and blocks the rest, turning unpolarized light into plane polarized light. Polaroid sheets are also used in pairs as polarizer and analyzer. Two main applications (the book's own pair): (1) Sky photography. A camera fitted with a polaroid cuts the glare and haze produced by scattering of skylight, blocks excessive bright white light while letting other colours through, and improves contrast, giving a brighter, more detailed image of clouds. (2) Stress analysis of materials. Polarizers analyze stress and strain in plastics, metals and glass: stress changes a material's molecular structure and its interaction with light, producing interference fringes that reveal stress patterns, weaknesses and optical properties — the technique called photoelasticity, widely used in engineering and quality control.
Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space-time, produced by violent cosmic events like colliding black holes or neutron stars, travelling at the speed of light and carrying information about their source. They are a stretching and compressing of space-time, observable by measuring the change in length between two objects, and were predicted by Einstein's general relativity in 1916 and first detected in 2015. Four basic types: (1) Continuous waves — from a single massive object spinning at a constant rate, such as a neutron star, with constant frequency and amplitude (white dwarf binaries also produce them). (2) Compact binary inspirals — from a binary system (two neutron stars, two black holes, or a neutron star with a black hole) spiralling together, with frequency and amplitude gradually increasing. (3) Burst waves — from violent events like supernovae, gamma-ray bursts or cosmic strings. (4) Stochastic waves — weak, random signals from the superposition of many weak sources, such as distant binary systems, and the most difficult to detect.
An interferometer is an optical tool for detecting gravitational waves: a very sensitive device that uses the interference of LASER beams to measure tiny changes in distance between mirrors, caused by a wave passing through the detector. LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory) is 1000 times larger than a conventional interferometer and uses LASER light where a conventional one uses normal light. Its basic components are: (1) a laser giving a stable, high-intensity beam; (2) a power recycling mirror reflecting used LASER light back into the instrument; (3) a beam splitter dividing the beam into two perpendicular beams; (4) mirrors reflecting the beams to form two perpendicular arms (4 km each); (5) a Fabry-Perot cavity of two facing mirrors, enhancing the path length; (6) photodetectors measuring the returning beams and detecting tiny phase shifts; and (7) arm cavities enhancing the LASER light and increasing sensitivity. Working: the split beams travel down the two identical arms, bounce off the end mirrors and recombine; a passing wave disturbs the mirror distances, causing a phase shift that alters the interference pattern, and the photodetector reads that alteration as the wave's presence. LIGO first observed gravitational waves on 14 September 2015, from a black-hole collision 1.3 billion years away, and Weiss, Barish and Thorne won the 2017 Nobel Prize for it.
Optical activity is the ability of a substance to rotate the plane of polarization of light passing through it. The rotation is detected with a polarizer and an analyzer: the analyzer must be turned by some angle before the light goes dark again, and that angle measures the rotation. Examples in the book are quartz crystals, cinnabar (HgS), sugar water, insulin and collagen, and organic substances like sugar and tartaric acid show the rotation in solution — which makes the property practically useful, because measuring the rotation tells you the concentration of the solution. The amount and direction of rotation depend on (i) the type of substance, (ii) its concentration, (iii) the distance the light travels through it, and (iv) the wavelength of the light. The cause, according to the book, is the asymmetric shape of the molecules, such as a helical shape: a few millimetres of such a crystal can rotate the plane by many degrees, so the twist of the molecule shows up directly in a bench measurement.
Step 1 — what a polarizer does to unpolarized light: it transmits only the component parallel to its axis. Averaged over all planes, exactly half the intensity gets through, so the transmitted intensity is I = I₀/2. Step 2 — the rest: whatever is not transmitted is blocked or absorbed, so Inot transmitted = I₀ − I = I₀ − I₀/2 = I₀/2. Half through, half stopped — that is the book's answer, and it is the single most-used fact about polarizers in this chapter.
Step 1 — the law: Malus's law, I = I₀cos²θ, with I₀ = 100 W m−2 and θ = 45°. Step 2 — the cosine: cos 45° = 1/√2 ≈ 0.707, so cos²45° = 1/2 = 0.5. Step 3 — multiply: I = 100 × 0.5 = 50 W m−2. At 45° exactly half the polarized beam's intensity survives — a result worth remembering on its own.
Step 1 — amplitude, not intensity: the component along the polarizer's axis is A = A₀cosθ, with A₀ = 10 units and θ = 30°. Step 2 — the cosine: cos 30° = √3/2 ≈ 0.866. Step 3 — multiply: A = 10 × 0.866 = 8.66 units. Note the difference from intensity: amplitude falls as cosθ, while intensity falls as cos²θ — mixing the two up is the classic mistake in this chapter.
Step 1 — what "reduce by 85%" leaves: 100% − 85% = 15% remains, so I/I₀ = 0.15. Step 2 — Malus's law: cos²θ = 0.15, so cosθ = √0.15 ≈ 0.3873. Step 3 — the angle: θ = cos−1(0.3873) ≈ 67.2°. ⚠️ Flagged rounding: the book's printed answer is 67.5°. The exact value from cos²θ = 0.15 is about 67.2°; 67.5° is the book's rounded figure (cos²67.5° ≈ 0.146, i.e. a reduction of about 85.4%). Use 67.2° for exact working and accept 67.5° as the book's rounded answer.
Step 1 — first filter, unpolarized in: a polarizer always halves unpolarized light, whatever its axis angle, so I₁ = 15/2 = 7.5 W m−2. The 50° only fixes the direction of the light that emerges, not its amount. Step 2 — angle between the two axes: both angles are measured from the vertical, so θ = 50° − 20° = 30°. Step 3 — second filter, Malus's law: I₂ = I₁cos²θ = 7.5 × cos²30° = 7.5 × 0.75 = 5.625 ≈ 5.6 W m−2. So the pair delivers 7.5 W m−2 after the first sheet and 5.6 W m−2 after the second, matching the book.
Step 1 — start: parallel axes mean θ = 0° and I = I₀, the maximum. Step 2 — target: half the intensity means I/I₀ = 0.5, so cos²θ = 0.5. Step 3 — the angle: cosθ = √0.5 ≈ 0.707, so θ = cos−1(0.707) = 45°. Rotating either sheet by 45° halves the transmitted intensity — the same 45°-halves-it fact as Numerical 8.2, now seen from the other side.
Step 1 — Brewster's law: tan θp = n₂/n₁ = 1.5/1 = 1.5. Step 2 — the polarizing angle: θp = tan−1(1.5) ≈ 56.3°. Step 3 — the refraction angle: at the polarizing angle the reflected and refracted beams are perpendicular, so θr = 90° − θp = 90° − 56.3° = 33.7°. Both values match the book exactly.
Step 1 — the law: complete polarization on reflection happens at the Brewster angle, tan θp = n₂/n₁. Step 2 — the numbers: the first medium is air (n₁ = 1) and the second is water, whose refractive index is the standard value n₂ = 1.33. So tan θp = 1.33. Step 3 — the angle: θp = tan−1(1.33) ≈ 53°, the book's answer. ⚠️ Flagged derivation: the question does not print water's refractive index; 1.33 is the standard value used to reach the book's 53°, so this answer is derived with that standard value, not read from a number in the question.
Step 1 — first sheet, unpolarized in: it halves the beam, factor 1/2 = 0.5, and the light is now polarized. Step 2 — each later sheet: the angle to the previous sheet is 30°, so each multiplies the intensity by cos²30° = 0.75. There are three such steps (sheet 2, sheet 3, sheet 4). Step 3 — combine: fraction = 0.5 × 0.75 × 0.75 × 0.75 = 0.5 × 0.421875 = 0.2109 ≈ 21% of the incident intensity. The common slip is forgetting the first halving; without it you would wrongly get about 42%.
Step 1 — Malus's law for the analyzer: I = I₀cos²θ with θ = 60°. Step 2 — the factor: cos 60° = 0.5, so cos²60° = 0.25. Step 3 — the fraction: I/I₀ = 0.25, the book's answer. ⚠️ Flagged ambiguity — read this before revising: this 0.25 is the fraction of the polarized intensity that reaches the analyzer (I₀ in Malus's law). If "initial intensity" is taken to mean the original unpolarized beam before the polarizer, the polarizer first halves it, and the fraction emerging from the pair would be 0.5 × 0.25 = 0.125. The book keys 0.25, so it is counting from the polarized beam entering the analyzer; the answer above follows the book, and the 0.125 alternative is stated here so the two are never confused.
Step 1 — convert: λ = 3000 km = 3000 × 1000 m = 3 × 106 m. Step 2 — the wave relation with v = c = 3 × 108 m s−1: f = c/λ. Step 3 — divide: f = (3 × 108) / (3 × 106) = 1 × 102 = 100 Hz. This is the same working as Example 8.5 (4000 km → 75 Hz), with a shorter wavelength giving a higher frequency, as it must.
This chapter has two halves that only look unrelated. The first half is polarization: light is transverse, so its vibrations can be sorted into one plane, and everything else — filters, Brewster reflection, Malus's law, optical activity, sunglasses and stress analysis — is a consequence of that one fact. The second half is gravitational waves: space-time itself can ripple, violent cosmic events make the ripples, and LIGO and Virgo measure them by watching laser arms change length by less than an atom's width.
Revision guidance: learn the three formulas cold — tan θp = n₂/n₁, I = I₀cos²θ, and f = c/λ — and the two angle facts: crossed polaroids give zero, parallel give maximum. Then practise the numericals in order: 8.1 (halving), 8.2/8.6 (the 45° half), 8.5/8.9 (stacks of filters), 8.7/8.8 (Brewster), and 8.11 (the wave relation). For theory questions, the transverse-proof experiment (section 8.3) and the LIGO working (section 8.7) are the two answers most likely to be asked in full.
