INTRODUCTION

Group 2 elements are the alkaline earth metals — Be, Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba. They have an ns² outer electron configuration, form M²⁺ ions, and their reactivity increases down the group. This unit explains their reactions, thermal decomposition, solubility trends, complex-ion formation, the Dow process for magnesium, and everyday uses such as BaSO₄ in medicine and Mg(OH)₂ as an antacid.

1. Properties and Trends of Group 2
🏷 Tags: Group 2, ns², M²⁺, reactivity, ionisation energy, beryllium anomaly
ENGLISH

Group 2 elements are s-block metals with the outer configuration ns². They lose both outer electrons to form M²⁺ ions, so their common oxidation state is +2. They are shiny, fairly soft metals with high melting points, and they are good conductors of heat and electricity.

Reactivity increases down the group. Ionisation energy falls as the atoms get larger and the outer electrons are further from the nucleus, so losing electrons becomes easier. Calcium and magnesium are among the eight most abundant elements in the Earth's crust.

Beryllium is anomalous. Tiny Be²⁺ has a very high charge density and forms strong bonds to oxygen, so beryllium metal is protected by a thin, adherent oxide layer and does not react with water or steam, unlike the other members.

2. Reactions with Oxygen, Water and Acids

ENGLISH

Group 2 metals burn in oxygen to form basic oxides, MO: 2M + O₂ → 2MO. The oxides react with water to give metal hydroxides (alkaline solutions): CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂. The alkalinity of the solution increases down the group — SrO gives a more alkaline solution than CaO, MgO or BeO.

With water: Ca + 2H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + H₂ (vigorous). Mg reacts slowly with cold water but vigorously with steam: Mg + H₂O (steam) → MgO + H₂. Be does not react with water or steam at all.

With dilute acids: M + 2HCl → MCl₂ + H₂. Reactivity with acids also increases down the group. The reactivity series lets us predict these reactions: a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive one from its compounds.

3. Thermal Decomposition of Carbonates and Nitrates
🏷 Tags: thermal decomposition, carbonate, nitrate, polarising power, stability
ENGLISH

Group 2 carbonates decompose on heating: MCO₃ → MO + CO₂. Thermal stability increases down the group: BeCO₃ decomposes most easily and BaCO₃ is the most stable. The reason is polarisation: a small, highly polarising cation (Be²⁺) distorts the large carbonate ion and pulls it apart; larger cations (Ba²⁺) have lower polarising power, so the carbonate survives higher temperatures.

Group 2 nitrates decompose differently: M(NO₃)₂ → MO + 2NO₂ + ½O₂ (for Ca(NO₃)₂: 2Ca(NO₃)₂ → 2CaO + 4NO₂ + O₂). Their thermal stability also increases down the group for the same polarisation reason.

Exam point: the same argument explains both trends — larger cation → lower charge density → lower polarising power → more stable carbonate/nitrate.

4. Solubility of Sulphates and Hydroxides
🏷 Tags: solubility, sulphate, hydroxide, hydration enthalpy, lattice enthalpy
ENGLISH

The two solubility trends go in opposite directions, and examiners love this. Hydroxides become more soluble down the group: Mg(OH)₂ is almost insoluble, Ca(OH)₂ is sparingly soluble, Ba(OH)₂ is soluble. So a saturated Ba(OH)₂ solution has a higher pH than a saturated Ca(OH)₂ solution.

Sulphates become less soluble down the group: MgSO₄ is soluble, CaSO₄ is sparingly soluble, BaSO₄ is insoluble — which is why BaSO₄ is used in X-ray imaging of the gut (it is not absorbed) and why Ba²⁺ is tested with sulphate ions.

Explanation: solubility depends on ΔHsol = ΔHlatt + ΔHhyd. For hydroxides the fall in lattice enthalpy down the group dominates, so dissolving gets easier; for sulphates the fall in hydration enthalpy dominates, so dissolving gets harder. The same pattern predicts that calcium dichromate is more soluble than strontium dichromate, because the dichromate ion is larger than the sulphate ion.

5. Complex Ions, Extraction and Uses
🏷 Tags: complex ion, ligand, Dow process, extraction, magnesium, uses
ENGLISH

A complex ion is a central metal ion bonded to surrounding molecules or ions called ligands by coordinate (dative) bonds. Be²⁺ forms complexes more easily than Ba²⁺ because its higher charge density attracts ligands more strongly.

Dow process (Mg from seawater): seawater is treated with Ca(OH)₂ to precipitate Mg(OH)₂: Mg²⁺ + Ca(OH)₂ → Mg(OH)₂ + Ca²⁺. The precipitate is reacted with HCl to give MgCl₂, which is dried and electrolysed to magnesium metal.

Uses: Mg(OH)₂ — antacid (milk of magnesia); BaSO₄ — X-ray contrast medium; Ca(OH)₂ (limewater/slaked lime) — agriculture (neutralising acidic soil) and water treatment; CaCO₃ — cement and building.

Octahedral complex: [Fe(CN)6]4−, coordination number 6Fe2+CN−CN−CN−CN−

Section 2: Short Answer Questions
Q1. Exactly 0.1 moles of calcium hydroxide and barium hydroxide are added to separate beakers containing 100 cm³ of water and stirred to form saturated solutions. Explain which solution has the higher pH value.

Answer: Ba(OH)₂ — hydroxides become more soluble down the group, so more Ba(OH)₂ dissolves, giving more OH⁻ ions and a higher pH than the Ca(OH)₂ solution.

Q2. The size of dichromate ion is larger than the sulphate ion. Following the pattern for the solubilities of Group 2 sulphates, predict which of calcium dichromate and strontium dichromate is more soluble in water?

Answer: Calcium dichromate — for a large anion, solubility decreases down the group (as for sulphates), so the calcium salt is more soluble than the strontium salt.

Q3. Write balanced equations for the reaction of Ba with cold water.

Answer: Ba + 2H₂O → Ba(OH)₂ + H₂. جواب: Ba + 2H₂O → Ba(OH)₂ + H₂۔

Q4. Why does Be metal form a protective layer on reacting with air while other members do not do so? Explain in terms of the strength of bonding between Be²⁺ and oxide ion.

Answer: Be²⁺ is very small with high charge density, so it forms very strong Be–O bonds, giving a thin, compact, adherent oxide layer that stops further reaction. Larger M²⁺ ions form weaker, porous oxides.

Q5. Predict the products of the thermal decomposition of barium nitrate. Write the chemical equation.

Answer: BaO + NO₂ + O₂: 2Ba(NO₃)₂ → 2BaO + 4NO₂ + O₂. جواب: 2Ba(NO₃)₂ → 2BaO + 4NO₂ + O₂۔

Q6. Why does solubility of Group 2 hydroxides increase in terms of the relative changes in ΔHlatt and ΔHhyd?

Answer: ΔHsol = ΔHlatt + ΔHhyd. Down the group both become less exothermic, but lattice enthalpy falls faster, so dissolving becomes more favourable and solubility increases.

Q7. In Dow Process, write the balanced equation for the precipitation of magnesium ions from seawater.

Answer: Mg²⁺ + Ca(OH)₂ → Mg(OH)₂ + Ca²⁺ (precipitate of Mg(OH)₂). جواب: Mg²⁺ + Ca(OH)₂ → Mg(OH)₂ + Ca²⁺۔

Q8. State one medical use of BaSO₄ and Mg(OH)₂, each.

Answer: BaSO₄: X-ray contrast medium for imaging the gut. Mg(OH)₂: antacid (milk of magnesia) for excess stomach acid.

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions
Q1. Why is the melting point and density of beryllium higher than other Group 2 elements?

Answer: Be atoms are the smallest with strong metallic bonding (two small, highly charged ions packed closely), giving a compact, strongly bonded lattice — hence higher melting point and density than the larger, more loosely packed members.

Q2. Why are Group 1 metals more reactive than Group 2 metals in the same period?

Answer: Group 1 metals lose only one electron and have lower first ionisation energies; Group 2 metals must lose two electrons (the second ionisation energy is high), so they react less readily.

Q3. Explain why calcium hydroxide is used in agriculture.

Answer: Ca(OH)₂ is a cheap base that neutralises acidic soils, raising the pH so crops grow better and nutrients become available; it also supplies calcium.

Section 4: Descriptive (Long) Questions
Q1. Describe the reactivity of Group 2 elements with water and dilute hydrochloric acid. Provide relevant chemical equations and differences in their reactivity.

Answer: With water: Be — no reaction; Mg — slow with cold water (Mg(OH)₂ + H₂), fast with steam (MgO + H₂); Ca, Sr, Ba — vigorous (M(OH)₂ + H₂), increasing down the group. With dilute HCl: M + 2HCl → MCl₂ + H₂, again faster down the group. Trend explained by falling ionisation energy and increasing atomic size.

Q2. Explain the thermal decomposition of carbonates and nitrates of Group 2 elements. Give reason and relative order of the ease of thermal stability.

Answer: Carbonates: MCO₃ → MO + CO₂; nitrates: M(NO₃)₂ → MO + 2NO₂ + ½O₂. Stability order: Be < Mg < Ca < Sr < Ba (easiest to hardest to decompose). Reason: polarising power of M²⁺ falls as cation size increases, so the large anion is distorted less and survives higher temperatures.

Q3. Explain the solubility of sulphates and hydroxides of Group 2 elements, and discuss the trend in their solubility down the group with appropriate examples.

Answer: Hydroxides: solubility increases (Mg(OH)₂ almost insoluble → Ba(OH)₂ soluble) because lattice enthalpy falls faster than hydration enthalpy. Sulphates: solubility decreases (MgSO₄ soluble → BaSO₄ insoluble) because hydration enthalpy falls faster. Examples: BaSO₄ used in X-ray imaging; saturated Ba(OH)₂ has higher pH than Ca(OH)₂.

Q4. Explain the process of extraction of Mg through Dow's method.

Answer: Seawater + Ca(OH)₂ → Mg(OH)₂ precipitate (filtered); Mg(OH)₂ + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + 2H₂O; MgCl₂ dried and electrolysed (molten) → Mg metal at the cathode and Cl₂ at the anode.
