INTRODUCTION

Benzene looks like it should be very reactive — three double bonds — but it is not. This unit explains the delocalised structure of benzene, why it undergoes electrophilic substitution rather than addition, the mechanisms of halogenation, nitration and Friedel–Crafts reactions, and how substituents direct the next group to ortho/para or meta positions.

ENGLISH

Benzene (C₆H₆) is a planar, regular hexagon. Each carbon is sp² hybridised with one p-orbital left over; the six p-orbitals overlap sideways to form a delocalised π system above and below the ring. X-ray diffraction proves the model: all C–C bonds are the same length (139 pm), between a single (154 pm) and a double bond (134 pm).

Delocalisation gives benzene extra stability: its resonance energy is about 152 kJ/mol, and its enthalpy of hydrogenation is less exothermic than expected for cyclohexatriene (three isolated double bonds). That is why benzene is more thermodynamically stable than 1,3,5-cyclohexatriene would be, and why it reacts less readily with bromine than cyclohexene does.

Bonding summary: each carbon bonds to two carbons and one hydrogen by σ bonds, and contributes one electron to the delocalised π cloud.

Benzene: planar hexagon, all C–C bonds equal (139 pm)delocalised π system6 sp2 carbons • resonance energy ≈ 152 kJ/mol • substitution preserves the ring

2. Why Substitution, Not Addition?
🏷 Tags: electrophilic substitution, addition, stability, arenium ion
ENGLISH

Benzene undergoes electrophilic substitution rather than addition because substitution preserves the delocalised system, while addition would destroy it and lose the resonance stabilisation. The reaction is slower than alkene addition and needs a catalyst (halogen carrier) — but it is still the favoured path.

Contrast with alkenes: an alkene + bromine needs no halogen carrier (the π bond itself polarises Br₂), but benzene + bromine needs AlBr₃ or FeBr₃ to generate the electrophile. Addition to benzene does happen only under forcing conditions: with H₂/Ni at ~150 °C and high pressure (→ cyclohexane), or with Cl₂ under UV light and heat (→ 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane).

Mechanism (general): (1) electrophile generated; (2) the delocalised π electrons attack the electrophile, forming a positively charged intermediate (arenium ion) — aromaticity is temporarily lost; (3) a proton is removed, restoring the delocalised ring.

Substitution preserves aromaticityStep 1: electrophile generated (e.g. Br+ from Br2 + AlBr3)Step 2: π electrons attack → arenium ion (ring broken)Step 3: proton removed → delocalised ring restoredAddition would destroy the 152 kJ/mol stabilisation
3. Halogenation, Nitration and Friedel–Crafts

Halogenation: C₆H₆ + Cl₂ → C₆H₅Cl + HCl, with AlCl₃ (or FeCl₃) as halogen carrier. The carrier polarises Cl₂ and generates Cl⁺: AlCl₃ + Cl₂ → AlCl₄⁻ + Cl⁺. Mechanism name: electrophilic substitution.

Nitration: benzene + concentrated HNO₃ + concentrated H₂SO₄ → nitrobenzene. Sulphuric acid protonates nitric acid (which acts as a base): HNO₃ + H₂SO₄ → NO₂⁺ + HSO₄⁻ + H₂O. The electrophile is NO₂⁺ (nitronium ion).

Friedel–Crafts alkylation: benzene + CH₃Cl + AlCl₃ → methylbenzene; AlCl₃ reacts with chloromethane to produce an electrophile (CH₃⁺/CH₃δ⁺–AlCl₄δ⁻). Acylation: benzene + CH₃COCl + AlCl₃ → phenylethanone (C₆H₅COCH₃); AlCl₃ is an electron-pair acceptor (Lewis acid) that generates the acylium ion CH₃CO⁺: CH₃COCl + AlCl₃ → CH₃CO⁺ + AlCl₄⁻.

4. Orientation: Ortho/Para vs Meta Directors
🏷 Tags: orientation, ortho, para, meta director, activating, deactivating
ENGLISH

Substituents already on the ring control where the next group goes. Ortho/para directors (activating): –OH, –NH₂, alkyl groups (–CH₃). They push electron density into the ring (the –OH lone pair overlaps with the delocalised electrons), so the ring reacts faster and the new group goes to positions 2, 4 or 6.

Meta directors (deactivating): –NO₂, –COOH, –CHO. They pull electron density out of the ring, so the new group goes to position 3 or 5. Example: nitration of benzoic acid gives 3-nitrobenzoic acid (meta product), because –COOH is meta-directing.

Worked examples: methylbenzene + CH₃Cl/AlCl₃ → 1,2-dimethylbenzene AND 1,4-dimethylbenzene (methyl is ortho/para directing, so both products form). Methylbenzene + SO₃ → mainly 4-methylbenzenesulfonic acid (para product). IBr + benzene → iodobenzene as the main product, because IBr is polarised Iδ⁺Brδ⁻ and I⁺ is the electrophile.

5. Phenol: Why It Reacts Faster
🏷 Tags: phenol, -OH, lone pair, activation, bromination
ENGLISH

Phenol reacts much more readily with bromine than benzene does because the lone pair on the oxygen atom overlaps with the delocalised electrons in the ring, pushing extra electron density into the ring and making it more attractive to electrophiles. So phenol + bromine water needs no catalyst and gives 2,4,6-tribromophenol (white precipitate) immediately.

Similarly, phenol nitration with dilute HNO₃ gives 2- and 4-nitrophenol without concentrated acid, and phenol sulfonation is easy. Diphenylethanedione (benzil) is pale yellow because of its delocalised π-bond electrons; when it is reduced, the conjugation is broken and the colour disappears.

Exam trap: bromine reacts with phenol more readily NOT because the ring is more susceptible to nucleophilic attack, and NOT because oxygen is electronegative — it is the lone-pair overlap with the delocalised system that matters.

Phenol vs benzene reactivityPhenol: –OH lone pair donates into the ringRing becomes electron-rich → electrophiles attack easilyPhenol + Br2 water → 2,4,6-tribromophenol, no catalystBenzene + Br2 → needs AlBr3, only one Br substitutes

Benzene reacts with chlorine in the presence of a halogen carrier, such as AlCl₃. i) Write the equation for the reaction of benzene with chlorine. ii) How does the halogen carrier allow the reaction to take place? iii) Outline a mechanism for this reaction. Include curly arrows and relevant dipoles. iv) State the name of this mechanism.

Answer: i) C₆H₆ + Cl₂ → C₆H₅Cl + HCl. ii) AlCl₃ polarises Cl₂ (Clδ⁺–Clδ⁻–AlCl₃) and generates Cl⁺. iii) Cl⁺ attacked by the ring π electrons → arenium ion → loss of H⁺ restores the ring (curly arrows: π pair to Cl⁺, C–H bond pair back into the ring). iv) Electrophilic substitution.

Q2. Diphenylethanedione is a pale yellow colour, which disappears when it is reduced. The colour results from the arrangement of the delocalised π-bond electrons. Explain what is meant by the term delocalised π-bond electrons.

Answer: π electrons are not confined to one bond but spread over several atoms (the whole conjugated system). The extended delocalisation lowers the energy gap so visible light is absorbed (yellow colour); reduction breaks the conjugation, so the colour disappears.

Q3. An acylium ion has the structure R–C⁺=O where R is any alkyl group. In the conversion of benzene into phenylethanone, C₆H₅COCH₃, an acylium ion CH₃CO⁺ reacts with a benzene molecule. i) Write an equation to show the formation of this acylium ion from ethanoyl chloride and one other substance. ii) Name and outline the mechanism of the reaction of this acylium ion with benzene.

Answer: i) Planar hexagon, sp² carbons, σ framework plus a delocalised π cloud above and below the ring. ii) The –OH oxygen lone pair overlaps with the π system, increasing electron density in the ring, so electrophiles attack faster and without a catalyst.

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions
Q1. The compound iodine monobromide, IBr, also reacts with benzene in an electrophilic reaction. i) Which compound would be the main product of this reaction, iodobenzene or bromobenzene? Explain your answer. ii) Deduce an equation for the reaction of iodine monobromide with benzene.

Answer: i) Iodobenzene. IBr is polarised Iδ⁺Brδ⁻ because bromine is more electronegative than iodine, so I⁺ is the electrophile that substitutes onto the ring. ii) C₆H₆ + IBr → C₆H₅I + HBr. جواب: i) آئیوڈوبینزین — IBr میں Iδ⁺ ہوتا ہے، اس لیے I⁺ الیکٹروفائل ہے۔ ii) C₆H₆ + IBr → C₆H₅I + HBr۔

Q2. Methylbenzene reacts with sulphur trioxide, SO₃, to form D, shown below. The electrophile in this reaction is SO₃. Complete the mechanism for the formation of D. Show curly arrows and the structure of the intermediate.

Answer: Electrophilic substitution: the ring π electrons attack the S atom of SO₃ (Sδ⁺), forming the arenium-ion intermediate (positive charge delocalised around the ring, with –SO₃⁻ attached), then H⁺ is removed to restore aromaticity, giving D = 4-methylbenzenesulfonic acid (para product; methyl is ortho/para directing).

Q3. Benzoic acid can be nitrated by concentrated nitric acid in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid as a catalyst, as shown in equation below. The organic product of this reaction is 3-nitrobenzoic acid. i) Outline the mechanism for this nitration of benzoic acid. Show how H₂SO₄ behaves as a catalyst. ii) A chemist carries out the reaction using 4.97 g of benzoic acid. The chemist obtains 3-nitrobenzoic acid as an impure solid, then purifies it to obtain 4.85 g of 3-nitrobenzoic acid. Describe a method to obtain a pure sample from the impure solid, determine the percentage yield and check its purity.

Answer: i) H₂SO₄ + HNO₃ → NO₂⁺ + HSO₄⁻ + H₂O (H₂SO₄ is regenerated at the end, so it is a catalyst). NO₂⁺ attacks the ring; –COOH is meta-directing, so attack at the meta position gives 3-nitrobenzoic acid after loss of H⁺. ii) Purify by recrystallisation (dissolve in hot solvent, cool, filter, dry). Moles benzoic acid = 4.97/122.12 = 0.0407 mol; theoretical mass = 0.0407 × 167.12 = 6.80 g; % yield = 4.85/6.80 × 100 = 71.3%. Check purity by melting point (sharp, matching the literature value).

Section 4: Descriptive (Long) Questions
Q1. In contrast to benzene, the reaction of an alkene with bromine does not need a halogen carrier. Compare the different reactivities of benzene and alkenes towards chlorine.

Answer: Alkenes: the exposed π bond polarises Cl₂ directly, so electrophilic addition is fast at room temperature with no catalyst, and addition destroys the π bond. Benzene: the π electrons are delocalised and stabilised (resonance energy ~152 kJ/mol), so Cl₂ needs a halogen carrier (AlCl₃/FeCl₃) to make Cl⁺, and the reaction is substitution (aromaticity restored) rather than addition. Addition to benzene needs forcing conditions (UV/heat for Cl₂, or H₂/Ni at high pressure).

Q2. Many organic reactions use electrophiles as reagents. Explain the role of electrophiles in organic chemistry. Your answer should include one reaction of an aliphatic compound and one reaction of an aromatic compound, including relevant mechanisms.

Answer: Electrophiles accept an electron pair from an electron-rich site. Aliphatic example: nucleophilic substitution of a halogenoalkane is started by the electrophilic δ⁺ carbon, or electrophilic addition to an alkene (Br₂ polarised by the π bond, Br⁺ attacked). Aromatic example: nitration — NO₂⁺ (from HNO₃/H₂SO₄) is attacked by the benzene π system, giving an arenium ion, then H⁺ loss restores aromaticity. In both cases the electrophile is the species that the electron-rich part of the molecule attacks.
