Water is life — and its chemistry decides whether it sustains life or harms it. This final unit covers the special properties of water, the indicators of water quality (DO, BOD, COD), point and non-point sources of pollution, the major pollutants (heavy metals, pesticides, nutrients, microplastics, oil), wastewater treatment, conservation and softening, and the rules that protect water.
Water's bent, polar molecule and hydrogen bonding give it unusual properties: high specific heat capacity (it resists rapid temperature change — which is why coastal climates are mild and why water is a good coolant), high latent heat, a high boiling point for its size, and maximum density at 4 °C.
Quality indicators: DO (dissolved oxygen) — oxygen dissolved in water, needed by aquatic life; low DO means poor quality. BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) — the oxygen microbes need to decompose organic matter; very high BOD means high organic pollution. COD (chemical oxygen demand) — the oxygen needed to chemically oxidise all pollutants, including non-biodegradable ones, so COD ≥ BOD. Rising BOD and COD with falling DO signal pollution.
Point sources release pollutants from a single, identifiable place — a factory discharge pipe, a sewage outfall, an underground storage tank leak. Their concentration is highest at the point of entry and can be monitored and controlled. Non-point sources (NPS) are diffuse: farm runoff, urban storm water, atmospheric deposition. NPS pollution requires precipitation (rain) to wash the diffuse contaminants into rivers and lakes.
A pollution plume is the spreading zone of contaminated water — discharge of heavy metal salts from a factory creates a plume that moves with groundwater or river flow. Agricultural runoff is the classic NPS example: fertilisers (nitrates, phosphates) and pesticides wash off fields into water, causing different types of pollution at once — nutrient pollution (eutrophication), chemical pollution (pesticides) and sediment pollution.
Heavy metals: mercury is converted by bacteria into methylmercury, which is highly fat-soluble — it bioaccumulates up the food chain, crosses the blood–brain barrier and damages the nervous system. Cadmium causes Itai-itai disease — Cd replaces calcium in bones, making them soft and painful. Lead damages the brain, especially in children.
Synthetic organic pollutants (PCBs, pesticides like DDT) are persistent — they resist breakdown, dissolve in fats, and accumulate in organisms. Solubility contrast: pesticides like DDT are poorly soluble in water but fat-soluble (so they accumulate in tissues), while inorganic nutrients like nitrates are highly water-soluble (so they wash into water easily). Microplastics are a growing crisis — unlike organic solid waste, they do not biodegrade, and they carry adsorbed toxins. Oil spills coat surfaces, block light and oxygen exchange, and poison marine life, disrupting the marine chemical balance.
Stages: (1) Screening and grit removal. (2) Primary treatment — sedimentation removes suspended solids. (3) Secondary treatment — microbes break down dissolved organic matter (activated sludge/trickling filters), lowering BOD. (4) Tertiary treatment — removes nutrients (nitrates, phosphates), remaining solids and pathogens.
Coagulation: aluminium sulphate (alum) is added to convert colloidal particles into floc — the tiny charged particles clump into large flocs that settle out (flocculation). Disinfection with chlorine kills bacteria and viruses cheaply and leaves a residual that protects water in pipes — but long-term risks include formation of chlorinated by-products (trihalomethanes) and chlorine-resistant organisms, and it does not remove chemical pollutants.
Four water-conservation methods: (1) Fix leaks and use water-efficient fixtures. (2) Rainwater harvesting. (3) Reuse/recycle wastewater (e.g. treated water for irrigation). (4) Drip irrigation instead of flood irrigation, plus public awareness and metering. Industrial discharge must be treated before release and monitored — it is a major point source of heavy metals and chemicals.
Softening: hard water contains Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺. Ion-exchange softening swaps them for sodium or hydrogen ions on a resin. Reverse osmosis forces water through a semi-permeable membrane that blocks dissolved salts and most impurities — RO removes a wider range of impurities (including dissolved salts and microbes) than ion exchange, which mainly targets hardness ions. Rules and regulations: discharge limits, environmental impact assessment before new plants, monitoring of DO/BOD/COD, penalties for illegal discharge, and protected zones around drinking-water sources.

5. Methylmercury is particularly dangerous because it is:
Answer: (c) Fat solubility lets it accumulate in tissues and reach the brain.
6. Itai-itai disease is caused by:
Answer: (c) Cadmium displaces calcium in bones, causing softening and severe pain.
7. In water treatment, aluminium sulphate (alum) is used as a coagulant to:
Answer: (c) Alum neutralises the charge on colloids so they clump into settleable floc.
8. In ion-exchange water softening, hardness-causing ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺) are typically replaced by:
Answer: (b) The resin exchanges Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺ for Na⁺ (or H⁺) ions.
Answer: Point sources: concentration is highest at the single entry point and falls with distance, and it can be measured and controlled at the source. Non-point sources: pollutants enter diffusely over a wide area, so concentrations are lower at any one place but spread over a large region, making control much harder.
Answer: Because the leak comes from one identifiable location — the tank — even though it is hidden underground. Example: a leaking petrol/diesel storage tank contaminating groundwater with hydrocarbons.
Answer: (1) Hydrocarbons and oils from roads and vehicles. (2) Heavy metals (lead, zinc, copper from brake pads and tyres) and road salts, plus pesticides from gardens.
Answer: DDT is poorly water-soluble but fat-soluble, so it sticks to sediments and accumulates in organisms rather than washing away. Nitrates are highly water-soluble, so they dissolve and wash readily into rivers and groundwater.
Answer: Organic waste biodegrades within weeks or months. Microplastics persist for centuries, are eaten by organisms at every level, and carry adsorbed toxic chemicals into food chains.
Answer: Oil coats the surface, blocking light (killing photosynthetic plankton) and oxygen exchange, and its toxic hydrocarbons poison fish, birds and invertebrates; as it breaks down, microbes consume oxygen, lowering DO.
Answer: Their stable carbon–chlorine bonds resist breakdown by microbes, light and heat, and their fat solubility lets them accumulate in organisms instead of being excreted.
Answer: Microbes decomposing organic matter consume oxygen (raising BOD) and release CO₂, and in oxygen-poor (anaerobic) conditions they release methane (CH₄), a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO₂.
Answer: (1) Fix leaks and fit water-saving taps/showers. (2) Rainwater harvesting. (3) Reuse treated wastewater for irrigation and industry. (4) Drip irrigation and water metering with public-awareness campaigns.
Answer: Industrial discharge is a major point source: untreated or poorly treated effluent adds heavy metals, acids, alkalis, dyes and toxic organics directly to rivers and groundwater, lowering DO and poisoning aquatic life.
Answer: Ion exchange mainly targets hardness ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺), swapping them for Na⁺/H⁺. Reverse osmosis forces water through a membrane that blocks dissolved salts, most organics, bacteria and viruses — a much wider range of impurities, but at higher energy cost.
Answer: Acid rain lowers water pH, stressing fish and amphibians, leaches nutrients from surrounding soil, and mobilises toxic Al³⁺ into water. Heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb) are directly toxic even at low concentrations, accumulate in tissues and magnify up food chains; they persist, whereas acidity can be buffered by limestone. Both reduce biodiversity, but metals poison through accumulation while acid rain acts mainly through pH change and aluminium release.
Answer: Rain washes fertilisers (nitrates, phosphates) and pesticides (organophosphates, DDT-type compounds) off fields into streams. Nitrates and phosphates cause eutrophication (algal blooms, oxygen depletion); pesticides poison aquatic organisms; sediment from eroded soil clouds water and smothers habitats. Because the source is diffuse, it cannot be controlled at a single pipe.
Answer: Nutrient pollution: nitrates/phosphates → eutrophication. Chemical pollution: pesticides → toxicity. Sediment pollution: eroded soil → turbidity, habitat smothering. Microbial pollution: animal manure → pathogens in water.
Answer: Benefits: cheap, effective against bacteria and viruses, and its residual protects water through the distribution network. Risks: reacts with organic matter to form trihalomethanes (suspected carcinogens); some organisms (e.g. Cryptosporidium) resist it; over-chlorination harms aquatic life when treated water is discharged; it does not remove chemical pollutants.
Answer: Heavy metals: mercury (methylmercury) damages the nervous system and brain, especially in foetuses; cadmium damages kidneys and bones (Itai-itai disease); lead impairs brain development in children and causes anaemia. Pesticides: acute poisoning causes nausea, headache and nerve damage; chronic exposure is linked to cancers, hormone disruption and reproductive problems. Both accumulate through food and water.
Answer: Heavy metals come from industrial discharge (electroplating, mining, battery and paint factories), mining runoff, and leaching from landfills. Organic compounds come from agricultural runoff (pesticides), industrial solvents and petrochemicals, sewage, and oil spills. Both also reach water through atmospheric deposition and urban storm water.
Answer: Treatment combines physical (screening, sedimentation, filtration), chemical (coagulation with alum, disinfection with chlorine/ozone/UV) and biological (activated sludge, trickling filters) methods. Advanced options: reverse osmosis and ion exchange for dissolved salts and hardness, activated carbon for organics and taste, and constructed wetlands for low-cost treatment. The choice depends on the water source and the pollutants present.
Answer: DO is the oxygen actually dissolved in water — aquatic life needs it; low DO means stress or death. BOD is the oxygen microbes will consume to decompose organic matter — high BOD means high organic load. COD is the oxygen needed to chemically oxidise all pollutants (biodegradable and not) — COD is always ≥ BOD. In polluted water DO falls while BOD and COD rise; the gap between COD and BOD shows non-biodegradable pollution.
