Lencho, a farmer, lives with his family in a house — the only one in the entire valley — sitting on the crest of a low hill. His field of ripe corn, dotted with kidney-bean flowers, needs only one thing: rain, or at least a shower, to promise a good harvest.
Rain comes — and turns to a hailstorm that falls for an hour, destroying the corn completely, stripping the bean flowers, and leaving the field white as if covered with salt. Lencho, filled with sadness, is sure of one thing: God will help. He writes a letter to God asking for a hundred pesos to sow his field again, and mails it.
The postmaster, moved by Lencho's faith, collects money from his staff and friends, but can only gather a little more than half, which he sends signed 'GOD'. Lencho, not grateful but angry, is certain the post office employees stole the rest: he writes a second letter demanding the remainder, telling God not to send it through the mail because the postal workers are 'a bunch of crooks'. The story's great irony: the helpers are blamed as thieves.

The themes are unshakable faith, human kindness, and communication — and the irony that binds them. Lencho's faith is absolute: he never doubts God will answer. The postmaster's kindness is equally real: he gives his own money and his colleagues' to honour a stranger's faith. The story asks: is Lencho's faith noble, or blind? He cannot see the kindness in front of him because he is certain of only one explanation.
The message is double-edged: faith gives strength in disaster — Lencho does not despair, he acts — but faith without gratitude and judgement turns helpers into suspects. The author neither simply praises nor simply mocks Lencho; he shows a good man whose greatest virtue (faith) has a blind spot. Good readers hold both truths at once.
Understanding the words and their meanings: The book's vocabulary exercise is built on this unit's own words — choose the correct synonym of the underlined word (crest = top, dotted = sprinkled, mortified = humiliated, contentment = satisfaction, re-sow = plant again, resolution = decision, unyielding = adamant, downpour = deluge, conscientious = meticulous, crooks = swindlers). Strategy: read the whole sentence, try each option in place, and pick the one that keeps the meaning.
Writing — Analysing and writing the script: A script is written to be spoken and performed: it needs speakers' names, dialogue, stage directions (in brackets) and a clear sequence of scenes. Analyse a script by asking who speaks, why, and what changes between scenes; then write your own short scene — for example, the post office scene, with the postmaster, the postman and Lencho's letter.
الفاظ اور ان کے معنی سمجھنا: کتاب کی الفاظ کی مشق اسی یونٹ کے الفاظ پر مبنی ہے — خط کشیدہ لفظ کا درست مترادف چنیں (crest = top، dotted = sprinkled، mortified = humiliated، contentment = satisfaction، re-sow = plant again، unyielding = adamant، downpour = deluge، conscientious = meticulous، crooks = swindlers)۔ طریقہ: پورا جملہ پڑھیں، ہر آپشن جملے میں رکھ کر آزمائیں، جو معنی برقرار رکھے وہی درست ہے۔
Gregorio López y Fuentes (1895–1966) was a Mexican writer known for stories of rural life and the Mexican Revolution. 'A Letter to God' (originally 'Carta a Dios') is his most famous story worldwide: a simple tale of a farmer's faith that has become a school classic in many countries because its irony is understood in every culture — the helpers mistaken for thieves.
اس unit کی باقی skills work (Vocabulary and Grammar drills, Oral Communication aur Writing Skills tasks) کتاب کے skills sections میں ہے — اس کی مہارت اس chapter کے section 4 میں سمجھائی گئی ہے, Q&A کی شکل میں یہاں دوبارہ نہیں دی گئی.
Answer: The earth needed a rainfall, or at least a shower: without it the ripe corn and kidney-bean crop could not turn into a good harvest for Lencho's family.
Answer: He was not surprised or grateful — he was angry. Surprising, because anyone else would be amazed and thankful to receive money from 'God'; Lencho was sure of the full hundred pesos and counted the money expecting all of it.
Answer: It revealed unshakable faith — he still wrote to God, demanding the rest — and total distrust of the post office: he believed the employees stole the missing money and asked God not to send it through the mail.
Answer: He knew the signs of his valley and field — an experienced farmer reads the sky. It shows his closeness to nature and his confidence: he lives by the land and trusts its rhythms.
Answer: A hailstorm: rain turned to hail that fell for an hour, destroying the corn completely, stripping the bean flowers, and leaving the field white as if covered with salt.
Answer: At first they laughed — then the postmaster was moved by Lencho's unshakable faith and decided to help, so that faith would not be shaken, collecting money from staff and friends.
Answer: He was not surprised because he fully expected God to send the money; he felt anger, because he received only a little more than half of the hundred pesos and concluded the post office employees had stolen the rest.
Answer: Lencho believes the post office employees stole part of the money God sent. In reality, the postmaster and his colleagues voluntarily gave their own money out of compassion and could only collect a little more than half of what he asked for — the 'thieves' were the donors.
Answer: It symbolizes their isolation and self-reliance: alone in the valley, high up, exposed to weather and fate, depending on the land — and on God — with no neighbours to fall back on.
Answer: Both: it celebrates faith's power — Lencho does not despair but acts — and gently criticizes blind faith, which cannot recognise human kindness and turns helpers into suspects. The author's message is that faith is strongest when joined with gratitude and clear judgement.
