John Milton's sonnet opens: 'When I consider how my light is spent, / Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide.' The poet has lost his sight — his 'light' — before half his life is over. His God-given ability, his 'talent', lies 'lodged with me useless', though his soul is eager to serve his Maker and present his true account.
He fondly asks the painful question: 'Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?' — does God demand daily work from one whose light He has denied? Then Patience, personified, answers: God needs neither man's work nor His own gifts; 'who best bear his mild yoke, they serve him best.' Thousands speed at God's bidding over land and ocean — but 'They also serve who only stand and wait.'

The theme is patience — patient acceptance of God's will. Milton, blind yet determined, feared his blindness made him useless to God. The poem's answer overturns that fear: service is not measured by visible work. God is a king whose state 'is kingly'; thousands run His errands, but those who bear His will quietly serve Him just as truly.
The message for students: a disability, a delay or a closed door does not end your worth. Standing and waiting — bearing hardship with faith — is itself a form of service. The poem teaches humility: we do not dictate the terms of our service; we accept them.
Using context to clarify meaning: When a word is unfamiliar, use the words around it. 'Lodged with me useless' — the context (talent, hidden, unused) tells you 'lodged' means kept/placed unused. Recognising word patterns: prefixes, suffixes and roots unlock meaning: 'useless' = use + less; 'denied' = deny + ed. Preliminary meaning: form a first, rough meaning from context, then refine it.
Writing — Final draft writing & critiquing: A final draft is not the first draft tidied up; it is checked for organisation, clarity and correctness, and then critiqued — judged with evidence. Ask: does every line support the main idea? Is the language precise? The unit's critical skill is the same habit applied to reading: support every interpretation with evidence from the text.
