INTRODUCTION

Vector-valued functions return vectors with both magnitude and direction to model multidimensional quantities such as position, velocity, or force in 2D or 3D, unlike scalar functions which give a single value. Their derivative provides the instantaneous rate of change, yielding the velocity vector essential for analyzing motion, with applications in engineering, computer graphics, and physics, from robotic arms to planetary orbits. This chapter covers definitions, component forms, operations, and differentiation techniques for analyzing curves and solving real-world problems involving velocity and acceleration. For example, a particle moving along a path in 2D might have its position at time t given by r(t) = t²i + t³j. This means at t, the particle is at the point (t², t³).

1. What Is a Vector Valued Function?
🏷 Tags: vector valued function, position vector, component functions, curve, parameter

A vector valued function assigns a vector to each real number t (often time): r(t) = x(t)i + y(t)j + z(t)k. The component functions x(t), y(t), z(t) are ordinary scalar functions. As t varies, the tip of r(t) traces out a curve in space — the path of a moving particle. A real-world example from the book: a satellite's position at time t (in hours) is r(t) = (4000 cos t)i + (4000 sin t)j + 3000t k (kilometers), where the x- and y-components model a circular orbit of radius 4000 km and the z-component is a linear ascent of 3000 km per hour.

Worked example (from the book): r(t) = t²i + t³j. At t = 2, the particle is at (4, 8).

A vector function traces a curve
2. Limits and Continuity, Component by Component
🏷 Tags: limit, continuity, component by component

Limits and continuity work component by component: limt→a r(t) = [lim x(t)]i + [lim y(t)]j + [lim z(t)]k, provided each component limit exists. r(t) is continuous at a exactly when each component function is continuous at a. If one component jumps, the whole vector function jumps — the particle teleports, which is not physical motion.

Worked example: r(t) = (t²)i + (sin t)j is continuous everywhere, since t² and sin t are. limt→0 r(t) = 0i + 0j = 0.

حدود اور تسلسل جزو بہ جزو کام کرتے ہیں: limt→a r(t) = [lim x(t)]i + [lim y(t)]j + [lim z(t)]k، بشرطیکہ ہر جزو کی حد موجود ہو۔ r(t) کسی a پر مسلسل ہے بالکل اس وقت جب ہر جزوی فنکشن a پر مسلسل ہو۔ اگر ایک جزو چھلانگ لگائے تو پورا ویکٹر فنکشن چھلانگ لگاتا ہے۔

حل شدہ مثال: r(t) = (t²)i + (sin t)j ہر جگہ مسلسل ہے کیونکہ t² اور sin t مسلسل ہیں۔ limt→0 r(t) = 0 ہے۔
Continuity is checked component by component
3. Differentiating Vector Valued Functions
🏷 Tags: derivative, tangent vector, differentiation rules

Differentiate component by component: if r(t) = x(t)i + y(t)j + z(t)k, then r′(t) = x′(t)i + y′(t)j + z′(t)k. The rules you know still hold: (r₁ + r₂)′ = r₁′ + r₂′; (f(t)r(t))′ = f′(t)r(t) + f(t)r′(t); for dot products, (r₁·r₂)′ = r₁′·r₂ + r₁·r₂′; for cross products, (r₁×r₂)′ = r₁′×r₂ + r₁×r₂′ (keep the order!). Never drop the unit vectors i, j, k from the answer.

Worked example: r(t) = t²i + sin t j. Then r′(t) = 2t i + cos t j.

تفریق جزو بہ جزو کریں: اگر r(t) = x(t)i + y(t)j + z(t)k ہو تو r′(t) = x′(t)i + y′(t)j + z′(t)k۔ معلوم اصول برقرار ہیں: (r₁ + r₂)′ = r₁′ + r₂′؛ (f(t)r(t))′ = f′(t)r(t) + f(t)r′(t)؛ ڈاٹ پراڈکٹ کے لیے (r₁·r₂)′ = r₁′·r₂ + r₁·r₂′؛ کراس پراڈکٹ کے لیے ترتیب برقرار رکھیں۔ جواب سے یونٹ ویکٹر i، j، k کبھی نہ چھوڑیں۔

حل شدہ مثال: r(t) = t²i + sin t j کا مشتق r′(t) = 2t i + cos t j ہے۔
The derivative vector is tangent to the curve
Differentiation samjho: component by component differentiate
4. Velocity, Acceleration and Speed
🏷 Tags: velocity, acceleration, speed, magnitude, tangent

If r(t) is position, then velocity v(t) = r′(t) and acceleration a(t) = r′′(t). Speed is the magnitude |v(t)| — a scalar. v(t) points along the tangent to the path (the direction of motion); a(t) points toward the inside of the curve. If r(t)·v(t) = 0 for all t, the motion stays at a fixed distance from the origin (circular motion).

Worked example: r(t) = 2 sin t i + 3t j. Then v(t) = 2 cos t i + 3 j. At t = π/2: v = 3 j, so the speed is 3 units per unit time.

حل شدہ مثال: r(t) = 2 sin t i + 3t j کے لیے v(t) = 2 cos t i + 3 j ہے۔ t = π/2 پر v = 3 j، اس لیے رفتار 3 ہے۔
Velocity is the derivative of position
5. Integrals of Vector Valued Functions
🏷 Tags: integral, constant vector, definite integral, net change

Integrate component by component too: ∫r(t)dt = [∫x(t)dt]i + [∫y(t)dt]j + [∫z(t)dt]k + C, where C is a constant vector. A definite integral from a to b gives the net change in position only if you integrate velocity; integrating speed instead gives distance travelled. Use the initial position r(t₀) to fix C.

Worked example: v(t) = 2t i + cos t j with r(0) = 0: r(t) = t²i + sin t j.

حل شدہ مثال: v(t) = 2t i + cos t j اور r(0) = 0 ہو تو r(t) = t²i + sin t j ہے۔
Integrating velocity recovers position
6. Applications: Projectiles, Orbits and Wheels
🏷 Tags: projectile, orbit, circular motion, range, flight time

Projectile: r(t) = (v₀cos θ)t i + (v₀sin θ t − ½gt²)j gives flight time, range and maximum height in one vector. Orbit: r(t) = R cos ωt i + R sin ωt j has velocity perpendicular to position — circular motion. Ferris wheel / robotic arm: the same componentwise method gives position, velocity and centripetal acceleration at any time.

Worked example: Football r(t) = 20t i + (20t − 4.9t²)j: it hits the ground when 20t − 4.9t² = 0, i.e. t = 20/4.9 ≈ 4.08 s (see the exercise below).

Circular motion: velocity perpendicular to position
Applications samjho: projectile, orbit اور wheel — تینوں میں vector function ایک ہی formula سے flight time, range اور direction دے دیتا ہے.

Answer /

r′(t) = 2 cos t i + 3 j. At t = π/2: cos(π/2) = 0, so v(π/2) = 3 j, with speed 3 units per unit time.
r′(t) = 2 cos t i + 3 j۔ t = π/2 پر cos(π/2) = 0، اس لیے v = 3 j اور رفتار 3 ہے۔

Exercise, Q6 — A cannonball is fired from the ground at an angle 30° with an initial velocity of 100 m/s. Assuming gravity acts downward (g = 9.8 m/s²) and neglecting air resistance: (a) Formulate the position vector r(t) of the cannonball as a function of time. (b) Find the velocity vector at t = 5 sec. (c) Determine the time of the flight (when the cannonball hits the ground).

Answer /

(a) r(t) = (100 cos 30°)t i + (100 sin 30° t − 4.9t²)j = 86.60t i + (50t − 4.9t²)j. (b) v(t) = 86.60 i + (50 − 9.8t)j; at t = 5: v = 86.60 i + 1 j m/s (speed ≈ 86.61 m/s). (c) Ground hit when 50t − 4.9t² = 0, i.e. t = 50/4.9 ≈ 10.20 s.
(a) r(t) = 86.60t i + (50t − 4.9t²)j۔ (b) t = 5 پر v = 86.60 i + 1 j m/s۔ (c) زمین سے ٹکراؤ جب 50t − 4.9t² = 0، یعنی t ≈ 10.20 سیکنڈ۔

Exercise, Q7 — A comet orbits the Sun in an elliptical path such that its position (in AU) at time t (in years) is described by x = 2 cos t, y = sin t. (a) Write the position vector r(t). (b) Find the velocity and speed at t = π/2. (c) Show that the acceleration vector always points toward the origin.

Answer /

(a) r(t) = 2 cos t i + sin t j. (b) v(t) = −2 sin t i + cos t j; at t = π/2: v = −2 i, speed = 2 AU/year. (c) a(t) = −2 cos t i − sin t j = −r(t), which points exactly opposite to the position vector, i.e. toward the origin. ✓
(a) r(t) = 2 cos t i + sin t j۔ (b) t = π/2 پر v = −2 i اور رفتار = 2 AU/سال۔ (c) a(t) = −r(t) ہے، جو مبداء کی طرف ہوتا ہے۔

Exercise, Q9 — A particle moves along a circular path, described by the position vector r(t) = R cos ωt i + R sin ωt j. Prove that its velocity is perpendicular to its position vector.

Answer /

v(t) = r′(t) = −Rω sin ωt i + Rω cos ωt j. Dot product: r·v = (R cos ωt)(−Rω sin ωt) + (R sin ωt)(Rω cos ωt) = −R²ω sin ωt cos ωt + R²ω sin ωt cos ωt = 0. A zero dot product means v is perpendicular to r. ✓
v(t) = −Rω sin ωt i + Rω cos ωt j۔ ڈاٹ پراڈکٹ r·v = 0 ہے۔ صفر ڈاٹ پراڈکٹ کا مطلب ہے کہ v، r پر عمود ہے۔

Exercise, Q11 — A quarterback throws a football with a position vector r(t) = 20t i + (20t − 4.9t²)j. (a) Find the time of flight before it hits the ground. (b) What is the maximum height reached? (c) At which time did the football reach its maximum height?

Answer /

(a) Ground hit when 20t − 4.9t² = 0, i.e. t = 20/4.9 ≈ 4.08 s. (b) Vertical velocity 20 − 9.8t = 0 at t ≈ 2.04 s; height = 20(2.04) − 4.9(2.04)² ≈ 20.41 m. (c) At t = 2.04 s (half the flight time).
