In earlier classes you studied trigonometric functions and their real-life applications. Now you extend that knowledge by exploring inverse trigonometric functions, which help you find angles when function values are known. This is essential in solving equations and modeling periodic behavior in calculus. In this unit you will define inverse trigonometric functions, their domains and ranges, examine their graphs within the given interval, and understand their key properties and uses.
Only a one-to-one and onto function has an inverse. If a function is not one-to-one, it may be possible to restrict its domain to make it one-to-one so that its inverse can be found. For a bijective function f from set X to set Y, the inverse f⁻¹ goes from Y back to X: x = f⁻¹(y) ⟺ y = f(x). The domain of f⁻¹ is the range of f, and the range of f⁻¹ is the domain of f. Also (f⁻¹∘f)(x) = x and (f∘f⁻¹)(y) = y.
Trigonometric functions are periodic, so they repeat values — that is why we must restrict them to get an inverse. The principal value is the value in the chosen principal range: sin⁻¹x ∈ [−π/2, π/2]; cos⁻¹x ∈ [0, π]; tan⁻¹x ∈ (−π/2, π/2). Domains: sin⁻¹ and cos⁻¹ take x ∈ [−1, 1]; tan⁻¹ takes any real x. The classic mistake is giving an angle outside the principal range.
Each inverse graph is the reflection of the restricted trig graph in y = x. y = sin⁻¹x rises through the origin from (−1, −π/2) to (1, π/2). y = cos⁻¹x falls from (−1, π) to (1, 0). y = tan⁻¹x rises through the origin with horizontal asymptotes y = ±π/2. Reading a value off the graph is the same as solving sin y = x within the principal range.
Use tan⁻¹a ± tan⁻¹b = tan⁻¹[(a ± b)/(1 ∓ ab)], with care for the quadrant (add π when the result leaves the principal range). Similarly sin⁻¹x + cos⁻¹x = π/2 for x ∈ [−1, 1], and tan⁻¹x + cot⁻¹x = π/2. These formulas turn sums of inverse trig into a single angle — the workhorse of the exercise proofs.
To prove an identity: take one side, set it equal to an angle θ, convert to ordinary trig, and simplify — or combine inverse terms with the sum formulas until both sides match. Double-angle forms are common: 2tan⁻¹x = sin⁻¹(2x/(1+x²)) = cos⁻¹((1−x²)/(1+x²)) = tan⁻¹(2x/(1−x²)) (with range conditions). Always state the domain condition at the end.
The questions below are taken from this unit's exercise in the official PECTAA Mathematics 12 textbook (National Curriculum of Pakistan 2023, session 2026–27). Only selected questions are solved here — the full exercise is in the book itself. Solutions are worked step by step by this guide book; final answers agree with the book's Answers section where it gives them.
First pair: tan(A − B) with A = tan⁻¹(10/3), B = tan⁻¹(7/13): (10/3 − 7/13)/(1 + (10/3)(7/13)) = (109/39)/(109/39) = 1, so the difference is tan⁻¹(1) = π/4. Second pair: (9/5 − 2/7)/(1 + (9/5)(2/7)) = (53/35)/(53/35) = 1, so the difference is also π/4. Sum: π/4 + π/4 = π/2. ✓
tan²(sec⁻¹3) = sec²(sec⁻¹3) − 1 = 9 − 1 = 8. cot²(cosec⁻¹4) = cosec²(cosec⁻¹4) − 1 = 16 − 1 = 15. Sum: 8 + 15 = 23. ✓
Let θ = tan⁻¹x, so tan θ = x. Then sin 2θ = 2tan θ/(1 + tan²θ) = 2x/(1+x²). Since −1 ≤ x ≤ 1, θ ∈ [−π/4, π/4], so 2θ ∈ [−π/2, π/2] — the principal range of sin⁻¹. Hence 2θ = sin⁻¹(2x/(1+x²)), i.e. 2tan⁻¹x = sin⁻¹(2x/(1+x²)). ✓
Let A = tan⁻¹x, B = tan⁻¹y, C = tan⁻¹z, so A + B + C = π, i.e. A + B = π − C. Take tangents: tan(A + B) = tan(π − C) = −tan C. But tan(A + B) = (x + y)/(1 − xy). So (x + y)/(1 − xy) = −z, giving x + y = −z + xyz, i.e. x + y + z = xyz. ✓
A = tan⁻¹x، B = tan⁻¹y، C = tan⁻¹z رکھیں تو A + B = π − C۔ ٹینجنٹ لیں: (x + y)/(1 − xy) = −z، اس سے x + y = −z + xyz، یعنی x + y + z = xyz۔
