A chromosome is made of DNA and proteins (histones). It has two chromatids joined at the centromere; DNA is wound around histone proteins into bead-like nucleosomes. A gene is a section of DNA that codes for a trait (usually a protein). Alleles are alternative forms of a gene — e.g. for flower colour, P (purple) and p (white). Genotype is the allele combination (e.g. Pp); phenotype is the visible trait (purple flower). Dominant alleles are expressed when present (P masks p); recessive alleles show only when homozygous. Homozygous = two same alleles (PP or pp); heterozygous = two different alleles (Pp).
DNA is the carrier of hereditary information. It is double-stranded; its sequence of bases codes for proteins. RNA is a single-stranded macromolecule made of nucleotides with nitrogenous base overhangs; it aids in converting hereditary information into useful proteins. The flow of information is the central dogma: DNA → RNA → Protein.
Transcription: a copy of RNA (mRNA) is made from a DNA template in the nucleus. Translation: the ribosome scans the mRNA and builds a polypeptide (protein) from amino acids. So DNA provides the template for mRNA formation; mRNA carries the message; ribosomes build the protein.
Gregor Mendel chose pea plants because they: have a short life cycle (many generations quickly), produce many seeds per plant, show clear contrasting traits (e.g. round/wrinkled, yellow/green), are easy to cross-pollinate by hand, and can self-pollinate (so pure lines are easy to keep). F1 generation = offspring of the first cross; F2 generation = offspring of self-pollinated F1 plants.
Monohybrid cross studies one character (e.g. seed shape); dihybrid cross studies two characters together (e.g. shape + colour). Example: a plant with genotype Rryy makes gametes Ry and ry (one allele of each gene per gamete).
Law of Segregation: the two alleles of a gene separate during gamete formation, so each gamete gets only one allele. Example: a heterozygous purple flower (Pp) crossed with a white flower (pp) gives 50% purple and 50% white offspring (Pp and pp in equal numbers).
Law of Independent Assortment: alleles of different genes separate independently of one another during gamete formation. Mendel's dihybrid cross (round yellow × wrinkled green) gave F1 all RrYy (round yellow), and F2 in the ratio 9 round yellow : 3 round green : 3 wrinkled yellow : 1 wrinkled green (9/16, 3/16, 3/16, 1/16). The book's exercise cross, RRyy (round green) × rrYY (wrinkled yellow), gives F1 all RrYy (round yellow).

1. Write down the combination of alleles in the gametes of a plant, which has genotype Rryy.
Answer: Rryy has two genes: Rr (heterozygous) and yy (homozygous recessive). Each gamete gets one allele of each gene: R with y, or r with y → gametes are Ry and ry (in equal numbers).
2. State Mendel's law of segregation.

4. Define monohybrid cross and a dihybrid cross and give an example of each.
Answer: Monohybrid cross: a cross studying one character, e.g. purple (PP) × white (pp) pea flowers; F1 all purple (Pp). Dihybrid cross: a cross studying two characters together, e.g. round yellow (RRYY) × wrinkled green (rryy); F1 all round yellow (RrYy), F2 ratio 9:3:3:1.
5. Draw a cross between two pea plants. One of them has round green seeds (RRyy) while the other has wrinkled yellow seeds (rrYY).
Answer: Parents: RRyy × rrYY. Gametes: Ry from the first parent (only Ry, since RR and yy are homozygous), rY from the second (only rY). F1: all offspring receive R from one parent and r from the other, y from the first and Y from the second → genotype RrYy, phenotype round yellow (round dominant over wrinkled, yellow dominant over green). All F1 plants are round yellow.
6. Differentiate between: Gene and allele • Dominant and recessive • Genotype and phenotype • F1 and F2 generations • Homozygous and heterozygous
Answer: Gene = DNA section coding for a trait; allele = an alternative form of that gene. Dominant = expressed when present (masks the other); recessive = expressed only when homozygous. Genotype = allele combination; phenotype = observable trait. F1 = first-generation offspring of a cross; F2 = offspring from selfing/crossing F1. Homozygous = two identical alleles; heterozygous = two different alleles.
7. In the following diagram of a cell, label the components and the processes. (The book's transcription/translation diagram)
Answer: Labels: chromosome (in nucleus) → gene/DNA segment unwinds → transcription (named process, nucleus) makes mRNA → mRNA leaves nucleus → ribosome in cytoplasm → translation (named process) joins amino acids → polypeptide/protein chain. Components: nucleus, chromosome, DNA, gene, mRNA, ribosome, amino acids, protein.
8. Label the components in the following diagram. (The book's chromosome diagram)
Answer: Labels: chromatid (one of the two arms), centromere (joining point), chromosome (whole structure), DNA double helix unwinding, histone proteins / nucleosomes (beads on the DNA), and a gene (a marked section of DNA).
1. Write a note on the structure and composition of chromosome.
A eukaryotic chromosome is made of DNA and histone proteins. DNA wraps around histone octamers forming nucleosomes ("beads on a string"), which coil further into a compact chromatid. A replicated chromosome has two sister chromatids joined at the centromere; each chromatid is one DNA molecule. Genes are specific DNA sections along the chromatid. Chromosomes become visible as distinct structures during cell division; humans have 46 in body cells.
2. Why did Mendel choose pea plants for his genetic experiments?
Short life cycle giving many generations quickly; many seeds per plant giving large numbers for ratios; several clear contrasting traits (seed shape, colour, flower colour, plant height) with no intermediate forms; flowers that can be cross-pollinated by hand and also self-pollinate, so pure-breeding lines could be kept and controlled crosses made; easy and cheap to grow.
3. Describe Mendel's experiment on two-character inheritance and state the law he proposed.
Mendel crossed pure round yellow (RRYY) with pure wrinkled green (rryy). F1 were all round yellow (RrYy) — round and yellow dominant. He self-pollinated F1 plants; F1 made four gamete types (RY, Ry, rY, ry). F2 showed four phenotypes: 9/16 round yellow, 3/16 round green, 3/16 wrinkled yellow, 1/16 wrinkled green — 9:3:3:1. Conclusion: alleles of the two genes assorted independently. Law proposed: the Law of Independent Assortment — alleles separate independently of one another during gamete formation.
4. Describe Mendel's Law of Segregation? Give an example.
Law of Segregation: during gamete formation, the pair of alleles for a character separates so each gamete receives only one allele; the pair is restored at fertilization. Example: cross a heterozygous purple flower (Pp) with a white flower (pp). The Pp parent makes gametes P and p in equal numbers; the pp parent makes only p. Offspring: Pp (purple) and pp (white) in a 1:1 ratio — 50% purple, 50% white.
5. Describe how DNA and RNA take part in the synthesis of a protein.
DNA holds the gene sequence (template). In transcription, an mRNA copy of the gene is made in the nucleus (DNA → RNA). The mRNA travels to a ribosome in the cytoplasm. In translation, the ribosome reads the mRNA in triplets (codons) and joins amino acids in that order, building a polypeptide that folds into a functional protein (RNA → protein). Thus DNA → RNA → protein: DNA stores, RNA transfers, ribosomes build.
1. How do genes control the traits and characteristics of an organism?
Answer: Genes are DNA sections that code for proteins (enzymes, structural proteins, hormones). The proteins a cell makes determine its structure and chemistry, and cells make tissues and organs — so different gene versions produce different proteins and therefore different traits. Changing a gene changes the protein and can change the trait.
2. Why can different alleles of the same gene lead to different physical traits?
Answer: Alleles differ in their DNA base sequence, so they code for slightly different proteins (or different amounts of a protein). One allele may make a working pigment enzyme (purple flower) while another makes a non-working version (white flower). The protein difference appears as a physical trait difference.
Inheritance starts with chromosomes, genes and alleles (1). A chromosome is made of DNA and proteins (histones); it has two chromatids joined at the centromere, and DNA is wound around histone proteins into bead-like nucleosomes. Homozygous means two same alleles (PP or pp); heterozygous means two different alleles (Pp). DNA, RNA and protein synthesis (2): DNA is the carrier of hereditary information — double-stranded, its sequence of bases codes for proteins. RNA is a single-stranded macromolecule made of nucleotides; it helps convert hereditary information into useful proteins. The flow of information is the central dogma: DNA → RNA → Protein. Transcription makes a copy of RNA (mRNA) from a DNA template in the nucleus. Translation is the ribosome scanning the mRNA and building a polypeptide (protein) from amino acids. So DNA provides the template for mRNA, mRNA carries the message, and ribosomes build the protein. Mendel's experiments (3): Gregor Mendel chose pea plants because they have a short life cycle (many generations quickly), produce many seeds per plant, show clear contrasting traits (round/wrinkled, yellow/green), are easy to cross-pollinate by hand, and can self-pollinate (so pure lines are easy to keep). The F1 generation is the offspring of the first cross; the F2 generation is the offspring of self-pollinated F1 plants. A monohybrid cross studies one character (e.g. seed shape); a dihybrid cross studies two characters together (e.g. shape + colour). Example: a plant with genotype Rryy makes gametes Ry and ry (one allele of each gene per gamete). Mendel's laws (4): the Law of Segregation says the two alleles of a gene separate during gamete formation, so each gamete gets only one allele — e.g. a heterozygous purple flower (Pp) crossed with a white flower (pp) gives 50% purple and 50% white offspring (Pp and pp in equal numbers). The Law of Independent Assortment says alleles of different genes separate independently of one another during gamete formation. Mendel's dihybrid cross (round yellow × wrinkled green) gave F1 all RrYy (round yellow), and F2 in the ratio 9 round yellow : 3 round green : 3 wrinkled yellow : 1 wrinkled green (9/16, 3/16, 3/16, 1/16). The book's exercise cross, RRyy (round green) × rrYY (wrinkled yellow), gives F1 all RrYy (round yellow) too.
