ENGLISH

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or illness". A disease is a condition that disturbs normal body function. Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens — bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites — and can spread between people (e.g. influenza, tuberculosis, malaria, dengue). Non-infectious diseases are not caused by pathogens and do not spread — e.g. diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), osteoporosis, genetic disorders and nutritional deficiencies.

ENGLISH

Pathogens are disease-causing microbes. Zoonotic diseases pass from animals to humans — e.g. rabies, when a person is bitten by an infected dog. Vector-borne diseases are carried to humans by a vector (usually an insect): in malaria, the mosquito carries the parasite, and in dengue fever after a mosquito bite, the mosquito acts as the vector (it carries the virus; it is not itself the pathogen or the host in the disease sense). Finding bacteria in a patient's blood sample means an infectious disease.

ENGLISH

The first line of defence against pathogens is skin and mucous membranes — physical barriers. Skin is a non-specific defence: it blocks all germs alike, it is not specific to one germ. Innate (inborn) immunity is present from birth, acts against all pathogens generally (skin, mucus, phagocytes, inflammation). Acquired immunity develops after exposure: B-cells make antibodies that specifically bind antigens, and T-cells kill infected cells and coordinate the response. Allergic reactions are triggered by allergens — normally harmless substances (pollen, dust, certain foods) that some immune systems overreact to. Common allergy types: pollen (hay fever), dust mite, food, animal dander and insect stings.

ENGLISH

When a vessel is injured: (1) the vessel narrows and platelets gather at the wound. (2) Platelets release clotting factors; soluble fibrinogen in plasma becomes insoluble fibrin threads that trap blood cells, forming a clot. (3) Platelets within the clot contract and reduce the size of the wound. (4) Once the vessel is repaired, a plasma protein breaks down the fibrin clot, dissolving it and restoring normal blood flow. This is why clotting stops bleeding but does not leave a permanent blockage.

Section 2 — Short Questions
SHORT + ANSWERS

1. Define infectious diseases.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Infectious diseases are diseases caused by pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) that enter the body, multiply, and can spread from one person to another directly or through vectors, water, food or air.

2. Define zoonotic diseases. Also give examples

Answer / جواب

Answer: Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases that pass from animals to humans, usually through bites, contact or contaminated animal products. Examples: rabies (dog bite), bird flu (infected birds), anthrax (infected animals).

3. Enlist allergies with some common types.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Allergy = overreaction of the immune system to an allergen. Common types: pollen allergy (hay fever), dust-mite allergy, food allergy (e.g. peanuts, milk, eggs), animal-dander allergy (cats/dogs), insect-sting allergy (bees/wasps), and drug allergy (e.g. penicillin in some people).

4. Differentiate between innate and acquired immunity.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Innate immunity: present from birth, non-specific (acts against all germs alike), fast, no memory — skin, mucous membranes, phagocytes, inflammation. Acquired immunity: develops after exposure to a specific pathogen, specific (antibodies/T-cells for that germ), slower first time but has memory, so later responses are faster and stronger.

5. Describe the role of skin as a component of defence system.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Skin is the first-line, non-specific barrier: its tough outer layer blocks germs from entering; it is dry and slightly acidic, which discourages microbe growth; oil and sweat contain antimicrobial substances; and when cut, clotting and inflammation seal and defend the breach. It also carries sensory receptors that detect damage.

6. State the role of mucous membranes in defence.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Mucous membranes line the nose, mouth, airways and gut. They secrete mucus that traps dust and germs, and cilia sweep the trapped particles out (e.g. up the trachea to be swallowed or coughed out). Mucus also contains antimicrobial enzymes such as lysozyme.

Section 3 — Long Questions
LONG + ANSWERS

1. Describe infectious and non-infectious diseases and their types with examples.

Answer / جواب

Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens and can spread: bacterial (tuberculosis, cholera), viral (influenza, dengue, AIDS), fungal (ringworm, athlete's foot), parasitic (malaria). They spread by direct contact, droplets, vectors, water or food. Non-infectious diseases are not caused by pathogens and do not spread: genetic (haemophilia, colour blindness), nutritional (scurvy from vitamin C lack, anaemia from iron lack), degenerative/organ diseases (diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, heart disease), and allergies. Their causes are genes, diet, lifestyle and ageing.

2. Describe vector borne diseases with examples.

Answer / جواب

Vector-borne diseases are transmitted to humans by vectors, usually blood-sucking insects, that carry the pathogen from an infected person/animal to a healthy person. Malaria: female Anopheles mosquito carries the Plasmodium parasite; symptoms are recurring fever, chills and sweating. Dengue: Aedes mosquito carries dengue virus; symptoms are high fever, severe headache, joint/muscle pain and rash. Others include yellow fever and filariasis. Control: kill mosquitoes, remove standing water, use nets and repellents.

3. Describe the roles of T-cells and B-cells in immunity.

Answer / جواب

B-cells (humoral immunity): when they meet their specific antigen, they multiply and become plasma cells that secrete antibodies. Antibodies bind the antigen, neutralise toxins, clump pathogens and mark them for phagocytes; memory B-cells remember the germ for a faster later response. T-cells (cell-mediated immunity): helper T-cells coordinate the response by signalling B-cells and phagocytes; cytotoxic (killer) T-cells directly destroy virus-infected cells and cancer cells; memory T-cells give long-term protection.

4. Write a note on blood clotting.

Answer / جواب

Blood clotting seals injured vessels. On injury, the vessel narrows and platelets stick to the wound, releasing clotting factors. These convert soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin threads, which trap red blood cells and platelets into a solid clot. Platelets in the clot contract, shrinking the wound. After the vessel wall is repaired, a plasma protein dissolves the fibrin clot so blood flow returns to normal. Faulty clotting causes either excess bleeding or dangerous blockages.

Answer /

Answer /

Answer /

Answer /

Section 4 — Inquisitive Questions
INQUISITIVE + ANSWERS

1. Why do infectious diseases spread faster in crowded places?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Crowding means closer, longer contact between people, so droplets from coughs/sneezes, shared air, shared surfaces, food and water reach more people quickly. One infected person can expose dozens, and poor ventilation and hygiene in crowds multiply the chance of transmission.

2. How can genetics increase a person's risk of developing non-infectious diseases?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Inherited gene versions can raise risk: e.g. genes affecting insulin production/action raise diabetes risk, genes affecting cholesterol handling raise heart-disease risk, and faulty genes directly cause disorders like haemophilia. Genes do not guarantee disease — diet, activity and environment interact with them — but they load the odds.

3. Why do some people develop allergies while others do not?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Allergy depends on immune sensitivity: some people's immune systems are genetically inclined to overreact to harmless allergens, making IgE antibodies against them. Early-life exposure, family history of allergy/asthma, and environmental factors (dust, pollen load, hygiene) decide who reacts. Others' immune systems simply ignore the same substances.

⚠️ Note (book-faithful gap): Chapter 9 has only 8 MCQs in the book (not 10) — the exercise ends at Q8 before Section B, as printed. Allergy "common types" in Short Q3 are given as the standard examples (pollen, dust mite, food, animal dander, insect sting, drug) since the book asks students to enlist types without printing a fixed list.
ENGLISH SUMMARY

Diseases and Immunity starts with what health and disease mean (1). Pathogens and vectors (2): pathogens are disease-causing microbes. Immunity (3): the first line of defence against pathogens is skin and mucous membranes — physical barriers. Skin is a non-specific defence: it blocks all germs alike, it is not specific to one germ. Innate (inborn) immunity is present from birth and acts against all pathogens generally (skin, mucus, phagocytes, inflammation). Common allergy types: pollen (hay fever), dust mite, food, animal dander. Blood clotting (4): when a vessel is injured: (1) the vessel narrows and platelets gather at the wound; (2) platelets release clotting factors, and soluble fibrinogen in plasma becomes insoluble fibrin threads that trap blood cells, forming a clot; (3) platelets within the clot contract and reduce the size of the wound; (4) once the vessel is repaired, a plasma protein breaks down the fibrin clot, dissolving it and restoring normal blood flow. This is why clotting stops bleeding but does not leave a permanent blockage.
