1. Oxidation, Reduction and Oxidation Numbers
🏷 Tags: oxidation, reduction, OIL RIG, redox
ENGLISH

Oxidation is loss of electrons, gain of oxygen, or loss of hydrogen; reduction is the opposite — gain of electrons, loss of oxygen, or gain of hydrogen. OIL RIG is the memory trick: Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain (of electrons). A redox reaction is one where oxidation and reduction happen together, because electrons lost by one substance are gained by another.

The oxidation number tracks electrons in a compound: it rises when a substance is oxidised and falls when it is reduced. For example in Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu, zinc's oxidation number rises from 0 to +2 (oxidised) while copper's falls from +2 to 0 (reduced). The substance that causes oxidation is the oxidising agent; it is itself reduced.

Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain

2. Galvanic (Voltaic) Cells
🏷 Tags: galvanic cell, voltaic cell, anode, cathode
ENGLISH

A galvanic (voltaic) cell produces electricity from a spontaneous redox reaction. At the anode, oxidation happens (electrons are released); at the cathode, reduction happens (electrons are taken up). Electrons flow through the external wire from anode to cathode, and this flow is the electric current that can light a bulb or run a device.

The two half-cells are joined by a salt bridge, which completes the circuit by letting ions move, keeping each solution electrically neutral. The cell voltage (EMF) depends on the metals used: the further apart the metals are in the reactivity series, the larger the voltage.

Zn anode (−)Cu cathode (+)salt bridgee⁻ flow → through wireanode: oxidation • cathode: reduction
3. Electrolysis and Preferential Discharge
🏷 Tags: electrolysis, electrolyte, preferential discharge
ENGLISH

Electrolysis is the reverse of a galvanic cell: electricity from a battery forces a chemical change that would not happen on its own. The electrolyte (a molten or dissolved ionic compound) conducts because its ions are free to move. Cations (+) move to the cathode, where they gain electrons (reduction); anions (−) move to the anode, where they lose electrons (oxidation).

In the electrolysis of molten lead bromide, Pb²⁺ ions are reduced to lead metal at the cathode and Br⁻ ions are oxidised to bromine gas at the anode. In aqueous solutions, water also supplies H⁺ and OH⁻ ions, so the products depend on which ion is preferentially discharged — usually the one lower in the electrochemical series, or the more concentrated one.

cathode (−)anode (+)cations → cathode (gain e⁻) • anions → anode (lose e⁻)
4. Electroplating and Purification of Metals
🏷 Tags: electroplating, purification, cathode, anode
ENGLISH

Electroplating uses electrolysis to coat an object with a thin layer of another metal: the object is the cathode, the coating metal is the anode, and the electrolyte contains ions of the coating metal. As current flows, the anode dissolves and the same metal deposits evenly on the object.

Common uses: chromium plating on car parts and taps for a shiny, rust-resistant finish; silver plating on cutlery; gold plating on jewellery. The same principle purifies copper: impure copper is the anode, pure copper is the cathode, and pure copper collects at the cathode while impurities fall as anode sludge.

objectcathodemetal anodemetal ions deposit evenly on the object
5. Batteries, Fuel Cells and Preventing Corrosion
🏷 Tags: battery, fuel cell, corrosion, rust
ENGLISH

Dry cells (torch batteries) and lead-acid accumulators (car batteries) are portable galvanic cells; rechargeable cells can be run backwards to reverse the reaction. Fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen to give electricity and water as the only product — clean, but hydrogen storage is still a challenge.

Corrosion — rusting of iron — is an electrochemical process needing oxygen and water. It is prevented by painting, oiling, galvanising (zinc coating), or sacrificial protection: attaching a more reactive metal (like zinc or magnesium) that corrodes instead of the iron, used on ships' hulls and underground pipes.

6. Oxidation Numbers in Practice and Fuel Cells
🏷 Tags: oxidation number, rules, peroxide
ENGLISH

Oxidation-number rules in practice: (1) An element alone = 0. (2) Oxygen = −2 (except in peroxides, −1). (3) Group 1 metals = +1, group 2 = +2. (4) The sum in a compound = 0; in an ion = the ion's charge. Example from exercise D 16.2: in Ca(ClO₃)₂, Ca = +2 and each O = −2, so 2 × Cl + 6 × (−2) = −2 → Cl = +5. In Na₂S₂O₃ the average for sulphur is +2, but the two sulphur atoms are actually −2 and +6 — a reminder that an average can hide different atoms.

Fuel cells turn chemical energy directly into electricity without burning. In a hydrogen fuel cell: anode (oxidation) H₂ → 2H⁺ + 2e⁻; cathode (reduction) O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻ → 2H₂O; overall 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. The only product is water — which is why exercise MCQ 16.8 names H₂O at the cathode, and why fuel cells are a clean-energy technology.

Anode: H₂ → 2H⁺ + 2e⁻(oxidation)Cathode: O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻→ 2H₂O (reduction)→

Section B: Short Answer Questions

1. 16.1 What happens when electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of NaCl?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Electrolysis occurs: at the cathode H₂ is produced, at the anode Cl₂ (concentrated) or O₂ (dilute), and sodium hydroxide remains in the solution (the chlor-alkali process).

2. 16.2 What are the main objectives of electroplating?

Answer / جواب

Answer: To protect a metal from corrosion, to decorate it with an attractive finish, and to improve surface properties such as hardness and wear resistance.

3. 16.3 Mention one difference between an electrolytic cell and a galvanic cell.

Answer / جواب

Answer: A galvanic cell produces electricity from a spontaneous redox reaction, while an electrolytic cell uses electricity from a battery to force a non-spontaneous reaction.

4. 16.4 Through which electrode, electrons leave the electrolytic cell?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Through the anode: oxidation at the anode releases electrons, which leave the cell and return to the positive terminal of the battery.

5. 16.5 How does an electrolyte conduct electricity?

Answer / جواب

Answer: By the movement of its free ions: cations move to the cathode and anions to the anode, carrying charge through the solution (electrons carry it in the external wire).

6. 16.6 What will happen if a strip of Cu metal is dipped in FeSO₄ solution?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Nothing — copper is below iron in the reactivity series, so it cannot displace iron from its salt solution.

7. 16.7 Why fuel cells are regarded as environment friendly?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Their only product is water — no carbon dioxide, smoke or soot — they are quiet and highly efficient, and they do not need recharging, only a continuous fuel supply.

Section C: Constructed Response Questions

1. 16.1 Calculate the oxidation number of chlorine atom in Ca(ClO₃)₂.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Ca = +2, O = −2 × 6 = −12. Let Cl = x: 2 + 2x − 12 = 0 → 2x = 10 → x = +5.

2. 16.2 How can H₂O₂ behave as an oxidizing agent?

Answer / جواب

Answer: In H₂O₂, oxygen has oxidation number −1, which can fall to −2 by gaining electrons (e.g. H₂O₂ → H₂O), so H₂O₂ oxidises other substances while itself being reduced — that is oxidising behaviour.

3. 16.3 Why different products are formed at the electrodes when a dilute and concentrated aqueous solutions of NaCl are electrolysed?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Because of preferential discharge: in dilute NaCl, OH⁻ (from water) is discharged at the anode giving O₂, and H⁺ at the cathode giving H₂. In concentrated NaCl, Cl⁻ is present in much higher concentration and is preferentially discharged, giving Cl₂ at the anode (cathode still gives H₂).

4. 16.4 Why corrosion becomes fast during rainy season?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Rain provides water and dissolved oxygen — both needed for rusting — and rainwater carries dissolved salts and acids that act as an electrolyte, speeding up the electrochemical corrosion of iron.

5. 16.5 If a galvanic cell is established between Cu and Ag, what reactions do you expect at the electrodes?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Copper is more reactive, so it is the anode: Cu → Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ (oxidation). Silver is the cathode: Ag⁺ + e⁻ → Ag (reduction). Electrons flow from Cu to Ag through the wire. جواب: اینوڈ (Cu): Cu → Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻؛ کیتھوڈ (Ag): Ag⁺ + e⁻ → Ag۔

6. 16.6 What is the function of a porous partition in a galvanic cell?

Answer / جواب

Answer: It separates the two half-cells while letting ions pass: it completes the internal circuit, keeps each solution electrically neutral, and prevents the solutions from mixing directly (like a salt bridge).

7. 16.7 How do fuel cells produce electricity?

Answer / جواب

Answer: By a continuous redox reaction: fuel (H₂) is oxidised at the anode and oxygen is reduced at the cathode; the electrons released flow through an external circuit, giving electric current, while the ions cross the electrolyte and water forms as product.

8. 16.8 How can the chemical reactivity of metals be compared by using electrochemical series?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Metals higher in the electrochemical series lose electrons more readily (they are stronger reducing agents): they displace metals below them from their salts, react more vigorously, and give larger cell voltages when paired with a lower metal.

Section D: Descriptive / Numerical Questions

1. 16.1 Explain with examples how the formula of ionic compound can be written using oxidation numbers.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): The oxidation number of a metal equals its positive charge and that of a non-metal group equals its negative charge; combine them so the total is zero (cross the numbers). Examples: Al (+3) + O (−2) → Al₂O₃; Na (+1) + Cl (−1) → NaCl; Ca (+2) + SO₄ (−2) → CaSO₄.

2. 16.2 Find the oxidation numbers of the indicated elements in the following compounds: Al(NO₃)₃, H₂SO₄, Na₂S₂O₃.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Al(NO₃)₃: N = +5 (Al +3, O −2: 3 + 3N − 18 = 0 → N = +5). H₂SO₄: S = +6 (2 + S − 8 = 0). Na₂S₂O₃: average S = +2 (2 − 8 + 2S = 0); the two sulphur atoms are actually −2 and +6, averaging +2. جواب: Al(NO₃)₃ میں N = +5، H₂SO₄ میں S = +6، Na₂S₂O₃ میں S کا اوسط +2۔

3. 16.3 Write down the formulae of the following compounds using ionic charges: Sodium hypochlorite, calcium oxalate, ammonium phosphate and calcium nitrite.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Sodium hypochlorite NaClO (Na⁺ + ClO⁻); calcium oxalate CaC₂O₄ (Ca²⁺ + C₂O₄²⁻); ammonium phosphate (NH₄)₃PO₄ (NH₄⁺ + PO₄³⁻); calcium nitrite Ca(NO₂)₂ (Ca²⁺ + NO₂⁻). جواب: NaClO، CaC₂O₄، (NH₄)₃PO₄، Ca(NO₂)₂۔

4. 16.4 Describe the working of a fuel cell.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): Fuel (hydrogen) is fed to the anode, where it is oxidised: H₂ → 2H⁺ + 2e⁻. Oxygen is fed to the cathode, where it is reduced: O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻ → 2H₂O. Electrons flow through the external circuit (electricity) while ions cross the electrolyte; the only product is water, and the cell runs as long as fuel is supplied.

5. 16.5 Discuss the electrolysis of concentrated solutions of metal halides.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): In concentrated solutions, the halide ion is preferentially discharged at the anode because of its high concentration, even though OH⁻ is easier to discharge in dilute solution. Examples: concentrated NaCl → cathode H₂, anode Cl₂, NaOH left in solution; concentrated CuCl₂ → cathode Cu, anode Cl₂.

6. 16.6 Explain electroplating giving examples.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): Electroplating coats an object (cathode) with a thin layer of metal from an electrolyte containing that metal's ions, while the anode is the coating metal. Examples: chromium on taps and car parts (shiny, rust-proof), silver on cutlery, gold on jewellery; the same principle purifies copper.

7. 16.7 What is corrosion? Explain the reactions involved in corrosion of iron.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): Corrosion is the eating away of a metal by electrochemical reaction with its surroundings. Rusting of iron needs oxygen and water: anode: Fe → Fe²⁺ + 2e⁻; cathode: O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e⁻ → 4OH⁻; Fe²⁺ + OH⁻ → Fe(OH)₂, which is further oxidised to hydrated iron(III) oxide, Fe₂O₃·xH₂O (rust). Salt and acids speed it up.
